Prof. Johnson has cl osely foll owed the d evelopment of worl d economy and mass media for many years, espe cially the reform of China’s TV broad casting and mass media industry. He has visited our country more than once, and has perfect knowl edge of our country, both its past and present.

I visited this city 25 years ago -- a little over 25 years ago.

25 年前我曾经访问过这座城市,25 年多了。

Then I could not have imagined the dynamic and impressive Shanghai today.

未曾想到,今天的上海如此生机勃勃,让人印象深刻。

China is arguably a more open place than at any time since the Tang Dynasty. We all need to become China experts now, because China, and especially China’s future, matters for all of us.

可以说,中国正处于自唐朝以来最开放的时期。我们都得成为中国专家, 因为中国, 尤其是中国的未来, 对我们都至关重要。

The last 25 years have seen a remarkabl e positive change. The rest of the worl d has a big stake in China’s success.

The possibilities that China’s economic and political d evelopment offer both it and the worl d are extraordinary. This shoul d be an opportunity for all of us. To make it so, we must buil d a strategic partnership between Europe and China.

I d on’t think China is likely to become an expansionist power. China’s membership of the WTO is a good exampl e of how integrating it more fully into the international system can work to all of our advantage.
