Last night a cigarette end caused a big fire in an office building. The fire had already been out of control by the time the second fire engine arrived. Some massive concrete beams began to collapse. Fortunately, no casualty was reported. Since local government has long banned smoking in al 1 offices, the police are skeptical of a mere accident. They are now seeking evidences to bear out their suspect. It will probably take the police a year to find out the cause of the fire. Anyway, it is not a piece of cake.

Unit 3 Around the WorldText A1.What’s the difference between the British Isles, Britain, the United Kingdom and England? The British Isles is made up of two large islands: One is called Ireland and the other Britain.Britain, or Great Britain, is the larger of these two islands and it is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England.2.The United Kingdom (UK) is short for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and NorthernIreland. It is made up of Scotland, Wales, and England (i.e. the whole of Britain), and also about one-sixth of Ireland, the Northern part. The rest of Ireland is self-governing.3.England is the largest, most populous, and generally speaking, the richest section. Englishpeople often use the words “England” and “English” when they mean “Britain” and “British”.This sometimes makes the Scots and the Welsh angry. The Scots are very proud of their separate nationality. The Welsh too do not consider themselves as England, and have a culture and even a language of their own.4.Ireland became part of the United Kingdom in 1801, but is soon grew discontented, and forforty years the “Irish Question” was the greatest headache of British Parliament. Exercis e 2, Book 2Part I Reading Compreh ension (30%)Passage 3In the UnitedStateselement ary educati on beginsat the age of six. At this stage nearlyall the teacher s are women, mostlymarried. (80)The atmosph ere is usu ally very friendl y, and the teachers have now accepte d the idea that the importa n t thing is to make the childre n happy and interes ted. The old authori tarian(要绝对服从的) methods of educati on were discredi ted (不被认可) rather a long time ago – so much so that many peoplen ow think that they have gone too far in the directi on of tryingto make childre n happy and interes ted ratherthan givingthem actualinstruc tion. The social educati on of young childre n tries to make them acceptthe idea that human beingsin a society need to work togethe r for their commong ood. So the emphasi s is on co-operati on ratherthan competi tion through out most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highlycompetitive; however, the need for makingpeoplesociabl e in this sense has come to be regarde d as one of the functio n s of educati on. Most American s do grow up with competi tive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educati onal systemf ails.
