第⼀篇Sleep Sleep is part of your daily activity cycle, but there are several different types or stages of sleep and they too occur in cycles. If you are an average sl eeper, your sleep cycle will go something like this: When you first drift off into sleep your eyes will roll about a bit, your te mperature will drop slightly, your muscles will relax, and your breathing will s low and b***me quite regular. Your brain waves slow down a bit too. This is cal led Stage 1 sleep. For the next half hour or so, as you relax more and more, you will drift dow n through Stage 2 and Stage 3 sleep. The lower your stage of sleep, the slower y our brain waves will be. Then, about 40-60 minutes after you lose consciousness, you will have reache d the deepest sleep of all. Your brain waves will show the delta rhythm. This I s Stage 4 sleep. You may think that you stay at this deep fourth stage all the rest of the ni ght, but that turns out not to be the case. Instead, about 80 minutes after you fall into sleep your activity cycle will increase slightly. The delta rhythm w ill disappear, to be replaced by the activity pattern of brain waves. Your eyes will begin to move around under your closed eyelids as if you were looking at s omething occurring in front of you. This period of Rapid Eye Movements lasts for some 8-15 minutes and is called REM sleep. During both light and deep sleep, the muscles in your body are relaxed but c apable of movement. However, as you slip into REM sleep, a very odd thing occurs ? Most of the voluntary muscles in your body b***me paralyzed. Although your b rain shows very rapid bursts of neural activity during REM sleep, your body is I ncapable of moving.21、The lower the stage of sleep,____A.the greater the alpha waves will be.B.the slower the brain waves will appear.C.activity pattern of the brain.D.the closer one is to the initial Stage 1 sleep .22、(同21题)Before one reaches the deepest sleep,_____A.muscular inhibition occurs .B.one’s body muscles b***me paralyzed.C.loss of consciousness has already occurred.D.one’s eyes begin to move as if looking at something.23、(同21题)REM sleep is characterized by____A.a drop in temperature.B.a loss of consciousness.C.a lack of body movement.D.the appearance of data waves.24、(同21题)Muscular relaxation, a temperature drop, and breath regularity are characteristics of____A.REM sleep.B.Stage 1 sleep.C.delta rhythms.D.Stage 2 and 3 sleep.25、(同21题)An increase in the activity cycle indicates____A.one is waking up.B.a relaxing of body muscles.C.an increase in the body’s rhythms.D.the disappearance of delta rhythm.第⼆篇Hearing Damage Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noises can cause he aring damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines I n factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home and at work. A pe rson only needs to hear the noise for little more than one s***nd to be affected. An American scientist has found that using aspirin can increase the tempor ary (暂时的)hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment using a number of students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them dif ferent amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested their he aring ability. He found that students who were given four grams of aspirin a day for two days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did no t use aspirin. The hearing loss was about two times as great. The scientist said millions of persons in the United States use much larger amou nts of aspirin than were used in his experiment.26、He said these persons face a se rious danger of suffering hearing loss from loud noise.Doctors have long knownthat____A.one may b***me deaf when he hears a loud noise.B.loud noises can cause damage to the hearing of young people only.C.one may lose his hearing when he hears a terribly loud noise.mon sounds at home are not harmful to the ear.27、(同26题)This passage suggests that one’s hearing____A.will be damaged even if he has heard a loud noise for less than one s***nd.B.will be damaged even if he has heard a loud noise for only little more than one s***nd.C.will not be damaged if he has heard a loud noise for only little more than one s***nd.D.will not be damaged if he has little more than one s***nd to get ready.28、(同26题)One conclusion you can draw from this passage is that aspirin____A.should never be taken more than four grams.B.can damage one’s hearing when it is given more than four grams daily.C.makes hearing damage from loud noise worse.D.always increases hearing loss by two times.29、(同26题)Millions of Americans are in danger of suffering hearing loss because they____A.often take air trips.B.like listening to loud music.C.have too much loud noises at home and at work.D.take too much aspirin.30、(同26题)The American scientist did his experiment in order to find____A.how much aspirin would affect a person’s hearing.B.How much aspirin should be given in the treatment of the patients with hearing damage from loud noise.C.whether aspirin would increase the temporary hearing damage from loud noise.D.whether the person who had hearing damage should use aspirin.。

英语 全国职称英语等级考试试题(理工类) 附答案
第一部分阅读理解(75分)Passage 1CATV is a short way of saying "community antenna (天线) television." But "cable television" is the term most people use. Cable television allows viewers to receive TV programs that they cannot pick up with their regular antennas.Television signals do not follow the curve (曲线) of the earth. They travel in straight lines in all directions. Signals from a TVstation move toward the horizon (水平线) and then go into space. If you live only a few miles from a station, you may not get any picture at all.CATV began in 1948. People in places far from TV stations sharedthe cost of putting up high antennas. A community antenna wasusually placed on a hill, a mountain, or on a high tower. The antenna picked up TV signals and fed them into a small local station. From the station, thick wires called cables ran out to nearby homes. Each person using the cable paid a monthly charge. CATV worked well, and soon new uses were found for it. Localstations could feed programs into empty channels that were not in use. People along the cable could have local news, weather reports, and farm and school news at no extra charge.Today, cable television has moved into cities. It brings in extra programs that city viewers with regular antennas cannot see. It is also used in many classrooms throughout the country.1. Some ancient people believed that lightning and thunder were the weapons of the gods.In reality, lightning is a flow of electricity formed high above the earth. A single flash of lightning 1.6 kilometers long has enough electricity to light one million light bulbs. The American scientist and statesman, Benjamin Franklin, was the firstto show the connection between electricity and lightning in 1752. In the same year he also built the first lightning rod. This device protects buildings from damage by lightning.Modern science has discovered that one stroke of lighting contains more than 15 million volts. A spark between a cloud and the earth may be as long as 13 kilometers, and travel at a speed of 30 million meters per second.Scientists estimate that there are about 2000 million flashes of lightning per year. Lightning hits the Empire State Building in New York City 30 to 48 times a year. In the United States along itkills an average of one person every day.The safest place to be in case of an electrical storm is in a closed car. Around the world, people are starting to measure the effects of global warming - and trying to figure out what to do about it.Scientists recently used satellites to study the temperatures of lakes around the world, and they found that lakes are heating up.Between 1985 and , satellites recordedthe nighttime temperatures of the surfaces of 167 lakes. During those 24 years, the lakes got warmer - by an average of about 0.045 degree Celsius per year.In some places, lakes have been warming by as much as 0.10 degree Celsius per year. At that rate, a lake may warm by a full degree Celsius, or 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, in just 10 years. That difference may seem small - you might not even notice it in your bathtub. But in a lake, slightly warmer temperatures could mean more algae, and algae can make the lake poisonous to fish. The study shows that in some regions, lakes are warming faster than the air around them. This is important because scientists often use measurements of air temperature to study how the Earth is warming. By using lake temperatures as well, scientists can get a better picture of global warming. The scientists say data on lakes give scientists a new way to measure the impact of climate change around the world. That's going to be useful, since no country is too big or too small to ignore climate change. Scientists aren't the only ones concerned. Everyone who lives on Earth is going to be affected by therapidwarming of the planet. Many world leaders believe we might be able to do something about it, especially by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we put into the air. That's why the United Nations started the Framework Convention on Climate Change, or UNFCCC. Every year the convention meets, and representatives from countries around the world gather to talk about climate change and discuss global solutions to the challenges of a warming world.16 Scientist have been keeping records of lake temperatures for over 30 years.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 The temperatures of lakes around the world have increased greatly between 1985 and .A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Lakes seem to be warming faster in Asia.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 A slight temperature increase in a lake could be harmful to fish.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Scientists generally focus on air temperatures when studying global warming.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Globle warming is less threatening to small countries.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 UNFCCC's annual meeting will be held in Mexico this year.

Human-triggered avalanches have the greatest incidence when the snow's angle of rest is (58) 35 and 45 degrees; the critical angle, the angle at which the human incidence of avalanches is greatest, is 38 degrees. The rule of thumb is: A slope that is v(59) enough to hold snow but steep enough to ski has the potential to generate an avalanche, regardless of the angle. Additionally, avalanche risk increases with (60) ; that is, the more a slope is disturbed by skiers, the more likely it is that an avalanche will our.Due to the plexity of the subject, winter travelling in the backcountry is never 100% safe. Good avalanche safetyis a continuous (61) , including route selection and examination of the snowpack, weather (62) , and human factors. Several well-known good habits can also v(63) the risk. If local authorities issue avalanche risk reports, they should be considered and all warnings should be paid (64) to. Never follow in the tracks of others without your own evaluations; snow conditions are almost certain to have changed since they were made. Observe the terrain and note obvious avalanche paths where plants are (65) or damaged.Avoid travelling below others who might trigger an avalanche.A.amongB.onC.atD.with4、 The U. The more easily goods can be broughtover the distance that separates producer and consumer, the better for trade. When there were norailways, no good roads, no canals, and only small sailing ships, trade was on asmall scale.2The great advances made in transport during the last two hundred years were aompanied byabig increase in trade. bigger and faster ships enabled atrade in meat to develop between britainand New Zealand, for instance. Quicker transport makes possible mass-production and big busi-ness, drawing supplies from, and selling goods to, all parts of the globe. big factories could not ex-ist without transport to carry the large number of workers they need to and from their homes. bigcity stores could not have developed unless customers could travel easily from the suburbs andgoods were delivered to their homes. big cities could not survive unless food could be brought fromadistance.3Transport also prevents waste. Much of the fish landed at the ports would be wasted if it couldnot B.e taken quickly to inland towns. Transport has given us amuch greater variety of foods and goods since we no longer have to live on what is produced locally. Foods which at one time could be obtained only during apart of the year can now be obtained all through the year. Transport hasraised the standard of living.4by moving fuel, raw materials, and even power, for example, through electriables, transporthas led to the estaB.lishment of industries and trade in areas where they would have been impossi-ble before. Districts and countries can concentrate on making things which they can do betterandmore cheaply than others and can then exchange them with one another. The cheaper and quickertransport bees, the longer the distance over which goods can profitably be carried. Countrieswith poor transport have alower standard of living.5Commerce requires not only the moving of goods and people but also the carrying of messagesand information. Means of munication, like telephones, cables and radio, send informationabout prices, supplies, and changing conditions in different parts of the worlD. In this way,ad-vanced munication systems also help to develop trade.Paragraph 2A.Higher Living StandardB.Importance of Transport in TradeC.Various Means of TransportD.birth of Transport-related Industries and TradeE.Role of Information in TradeF.PublicTransportation7、答复题:A Star Is Born1. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world'slargest telescope ( 望远镜) and is taking astronomers (天文学家 ) further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. Located 2,600 metres up io the Chilean Andes, it has four huge mirrors, each about the size of a London bus.The VLT is so powerful it can spot a burning match 10,000 kilometres away.2. This astonishing power will allow astronomers to see events in space from the birth of stars to the collision ( 碰撞 ) of galaxies ( 星系 ) on the edge of the cosmos ( 宇宙 ). The VLT is giving astronomers their best-ever view of the cosmos. The power of the VLT to see the smallest detail at the furthest distances makes its designers amazed.3. Take the case of Eta Carinae, one of the most explosive stars in the universe. This star produces ultraviolet laser rays ( 紫外线 ) and it will destroyitself in a few million years' time. It is five times brighter than the sun and when it explodes it is going to be a sight worth waiting for!4. But it is at distances of millions, even billions, of light years that the VLT really shows its power. The VLT can detect light that set out on its journey before the earth even existed. This gives astronomers their first-ever detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos.5. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine. It takes astronomers back to a time when plete galaxies crashed into each other. The effects of these past collisions can now be seen by scientists, and astronomersbelieve the telescope will reveal more about these exciting events in the years to e. One day, we might be able to say we have traveled back to the beginning of time, and we will have a much clearer picture of how our pla was born.Paragraph 1A.Enents that Took Place before the Earth ExistedB.Power of the TelescopeC.Details of Eta CarinaeD.Invention of a Time MachineE.Biggest Telescope8、答复题:EarthquakeHow does an earthquake start? What makes an earthquake happen? The rock of theearth’s crust(地壳)may have a fault,a kind of break in the surface. The blocks which make up the earth move, and sometimes this may cause the sides of the fault to move up and down or lengthways(纵向地)against each other. When one piece of rock starts to rub on another with great force,a lot of energy is used. This energy is changed into vibrations(振动)and it is these vibrations that we reef as an earthquake. The vibrations can travel thousands of kilometers and so an earthquake in Turkey may be felt in Greece. What to do during an earthquake? At schoolAs soon as the earthquake starts, students should get under the desks immediately and wait until the teachertells them it is safe to e out.The teacher should,at the SalTle time,go imme diately to the teacher’s desk, get underneath(在……下面)it and stay there till the danger is over.Students must not argue with the teacher or question instructions. As soon as the tremors(震动)stop, all students should walk towards the exit and go straight to the school playground or any open space such as a square or apark. They must wait there until the teacher tells them it is safe to go.At homeIf you are at home when the earthquake ours.get immediately under the table in the living room orkitchen.Choose the biggest and strongest table you can find. You must not go anywhere near the window and don’t go out onto the balcony(阳台).Once the tremors have stopped, you can e out from under the table but you must leave the building straight away. You should walk down the stairs and should not use the lift- there may be a power cut as a result of the earthquake and you could find yourself trapped inside the lift for hours. In the streetIf you are in the street when the earthquake takes place,do not stand near buildings.fences or walls-move away as quickly as possible and try to find a large open space to wait in.Standing under trees could also be dangerous.People knew long ago how an earthquake starts.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned9、 The governor gave a rather vague outline of his tax plan.A.unclearB.firmC.shortD.neat10、 In order to survive man needs to consume food and water.A.workB.playC.liveD.walk。
