How about an ice-cream taster?Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers (制造商) to be sure of a product’s qua lity. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream—as well as for developing over 75 flavors (口味).Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No—there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field. In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12℉. Harrison explains: “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir (搅拌) it, creating ice-cream soup.”While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Dose the product have the color expected from that flavor?” Next it’s time to taste!Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy---working at one cool job.51. What is John Harrison’s job?A. An official.B. An ice-cream taster.C. A chemist.D. An ice-cream manufacturer.52. According to John Harrison, to be qualified(合格的)in the “cool field”, it is helpful to ________.A. keep a diary of workB. have a degree in related subjectsC. have new ideas every dayD. find out new flavor each day53. Which of the following is probably the best title of the passage?A. Tasting with EyesB. Flavors of Ice CreamC. John Harrison’s LifeD. One Cool JobBThe World Health Organization (WHO) planned to study the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa south of the Sahara and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor. The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child’s stomach becomes swollen by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes color and may break out in open sores(疼痛). The hair changes color and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced. The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breastfeeding, gave them foods full of starches(淀粉)instead of greatly needed proteins. They found that the addition of milk to the food of the children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives. The unbelievable thing about kwashiorkor is that the very existence of the disease—which has been killing thousands of children for centuries—was not even recognized in Latin America as recently as ten years ago. The deaths of those children were mistakenly listed as due to other diseas es. It was the WHO’s work in Africa that led to the discovery of the problem in Central America.55. From the passage we learn that kwashiorkor is a disease caused by __________ .A. poor living conditionsB. lack of proteins in foodC. breastfeedingD. lack of food56. It is difficult to discover kwashiorkor because ____________________ .A. it has no symptoms at allB. it is hard to identify signs of itC. it doesn’t last long enough for careful observationD. it is hardly different from other diseases57. What is mentioned as a simple but reasonable way of curing this disease?A. Taking a special medicine.B. Avoiding any food containing starch.C. Having more meat or milk.D. As a senior high school student, you must make efforts to improve your communication and problem-solving skills. Last but not least, always look on the bright side and never lose hope, even in difficult situations. In time you will find yourself growing into a well-rounded individual. As Lao-Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You need to make a continuous effort to train your mind and develop your character. Senior high school will help you learn and grow, yet you alone are responsible for realizing your great potential. Be confident, do your best and make us proud!Extended readingJohn Li, a Chinese senior high school student, has spent a year studying in the UK. Read his article in the school magazine about his school life abroad.\Last year, I had the chance to study at a British secondary school as an exchange student. I stayed with a lovely host family and went to school with their son, Daniel. We were both in year ten and we got on well. He is learning Chinese and will come to stay with me this year in China! The British school day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Students usually have to learn nine subjects at secondary school. Every student in the UK must study English, Maths and the Science subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students can also choose to study other subjects, such as History, Art and Business. The classes are different from those in China. Each teacher has their own classroom and the students move around for every lesson. In most of my classes, there were only about 20 students. In the beginning, however, it was still tough for me to remember everyone’s name!I enjoyed most of the classes, but some of them were quite challenging. Technology classes were fun. I made a clock to take home. The teacher helped me put the parts together. I like it so much that I still use it as my alarm! I found Maths quite easy and enjoyable because the material was less advanced in the UK than in China. However, learning in English was a great challenge for me. There were a lot of difficult English words, especially in Geography and Biology. Class discussion is very important in the UK, but I could not make a great contribution because sometimes I wasn’t able to express myself clearly in English. Although there was not as much homework as I was used to, it was still challenging. Fortunately, my teachers and classmates were always helpful and gave me lots of encouragement. My language skills improved over time.During the hour-long lunchtime, I ate in the school dining hall. There were lots of options including bread and butter, chicken pie and puddings, but I still missed my mum’s cooking! After lunch, I often played on the school’s huge sports field with Daniel and his friends. Sometimes we just relaxed under a tree or sat on the grass. After school, there were many clubs to join. The one that attracted me most was the Rugby Club. We played once a week, and it was great fun. Also, I enjoyed acting in the Theatre Club. I still have photos of myself acting in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Joining clubs was a great way to meet British students and make friends with them.I am glad to have the opportunity to experience this different way of life. I met some great people and learnt a lot about school life in the UK. Daniel and his family were fantastic hosts, and his friends were very nice as well. I can’t wait for Daniel to visit China!TranslationUnit 1 Back to schoolReading发挥你的潜能大家好!欢迎进入高中阶段学习!今天,是新学期的开始,是一段三年旅程的开端,更是一个锦绣前程的起点。

Then from across the street someone came walking. It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber-soled boots or shoes, and making little sound while walking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of about fifty small houses and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest to the child’s house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough to show the smooth skin of a woman’s face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the child’s house. She put a key in the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard. She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, then went up the stairs quickly but with hardly a sound. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing(楼梯平台). She pushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and the light fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom hand-basin, a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away and went downstairs, and hesitated again at the foot of the stairs, then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom that she wanted. Two rooms remained; the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the child’s bed and the child.66. The lights of the car passing the end of the street showed that ______.A. a woman was driving the carB. someone was standing by a street lamp.C. a man and a woman were walking up the street.D. a woman was walking by herself up the street.67. After the woman closed the front door, she ___________.A. looked round quicklyB. started breathing againC. rested before movingD. walked straight towards the front door68. When she was upstairs, the woman _______.A. saw that there was a wash-basin in each roomB. noticed a mirror which she was looking forC. found a torch in one of the roomsD. opened four different doors69. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活)if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high. There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand , rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing —very, very slowly —as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock. Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that :have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.74. Many plants may survive in deserts when___________.A. the rain is spread out in a yearB. the rain falls only in a few weeksC. there is little rain in a yearD. it is dry all the year round75. Sand dunes are formed when___________.A. sand piles up graduallyB. there is plenty of rain in a yearC. the sea has dried up over the yearsD. pieces of rock get smaller76. The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means that in a desert thereis____________.A. too much sandB. more sand than beforeC. nothing except sandD. something else besides sand77 It can be learned from the text that in a desert____________.A. there is no rainfall throughout the yearB. life exists in rough conditionsC. all sand dunes are a few feet highD. rocks are worn away only by wind and heatDLetter to Editor of TV WeeklyDear Sir/Madam,I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling. The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coinonly and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home —I had to walk. As a grown-up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “reality programmes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.Yours faithfully,Chris Daniels78. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.C. To express his appreciation of the programme.D. To have his story told on the programme.79. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to .A. describe how painful his early experience wasB. draw a direct response from Alison BurnhamC. show how the programme made him thinkD. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson80. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because .A. he hadn’t got a r eturn ticketB. he had lost his bus ticketC. he didn’t like big crowdsD. he missed the bus home81. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?A. He should have told the conductor then.B. He should have been well treated.C. He regrets going to school alone.D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.ET-shirts out; uniforms inSchool uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes. Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the samemessage to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education. Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.”First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality (个性). They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.82. In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means.A. tasksB. messagesC. differencesD. advantages83. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general .A. prevent the wearers from being laughed atB. help the wearers keep their duties in mindC. are seen as a symbol of powerD. help to create social barriers84. Some people are against school uniforms because .A. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniformsB. they believe that uniforms will make students less creativeC. they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriersD. they think that school uniforms are too popular85. The author would probably agree that .A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or notB. students’ individuality may not come from school educationC. students’ creativity is related to the clothes they chooseD. school uniforms help to create equality among students第二卷( 共35分)第四部分:单词拼写10’86. If the break is small, however, the person may not feel much pain at all. If you think that you or someone else has broken a bone, the most important things to do are to stay calm, make the hurt person comfortable, and call the doctor. Do not move the injured body part since movement could make it worse. To treat the break, the doctor will need to take an X-ray. This gives the doctor the information he or she needs to set (接上) the bone: to put it back to its normal place. If the bone is large or it is broken in more than one place, the doctor may need to use metal pins (钢钉) to set it. After the bone has been set, the next step is usually putting on a cast, the special, hard thing that will keep the bone in place for a month or two.Your bones are excellent at healing themselves. Complete the diagram by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.Fast food and too much TV time shouldn’t take all the blame for the weight problems. A group of researchers say that a number of aspects(方面)of modern living---- from lack of sleep to environmental chemicals and to living with air conditioning----may be closely related to the weight problems of many people.Lack of sleep is one factor(因素). Research in animals and humans suggests that a lack of sleep over a long period of time can increase appetite(食欲). Studies also show that many adults and children are sleeping less than they used to. In recent decades(十年间), adults have gone from sleeping for all average of nine hours to about seven hours. There is also evidence that industrial chemicals may increase body fat. These chemicals, which are used in products, change hormonal(荷尔蒙)activity when they get into the body. Studies suggest that people have been getting more and more of these chemicals through the food chain in recent decades.Another factor that may be making people overweight is air conditioning. The body burns calories when forced to control its own temperature, and people tend to eat less in hot and wet weather, but air conditioning(空调) makes it unnecessary for the body to make any adjustment(调整).Researchers also list other possible risk factors for overweight, including more older mothers, whose children may become overweight more easily; a number of medicines which can lead to weight gain; and fewer people who smoke, since people often gain weight when they stop smoking because nicotine can make people eat less.No one is suggesting that people should stop working and sleep more, or keep smoking. When it comes to any person’s weight, what really matters is how much they eat and how much of the food they use every day. That means diet and exercise are still the key.Title:71 related to(与…..有关的)the weight problemsSituation Researchers say that not only fast food and too much TV time but also many aspects of modern living should take the blame for 72 .Three main factors73●increase appetite.●reduce average sleeping hours from 74 to about seven hours. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would write a note-“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”-and place it in the box along withthe empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear. All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.Recently, an old milk box in the countryside that I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.1. Mr Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer__ __.A. to show his magical power.B. to pay for the deliveryC. to satisfy his curiosity.D. to please his mother.2. He was fully trusted by the family.3. What does the underlined word mean in para 3 ?A. 舒适B. 方便C. 安全D. 快捷4. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.B. It has been driven out of the market.C. Its service is getting poor.D. It is forbidden by law.5. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?A. He missed the good old days.B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.C. He missed it for his milk bottles.D. He planted flowers in it.BHomestay provides English language students with the chance to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home. What to ExpectThe host will provide accommodation and meals. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal(谷物类食品),bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by desert, fruit and coffee.FriendsIf you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You hav e no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.Self-Catering Accommodation in Private HomesAccommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour milk into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy. From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others. Often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them.Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty-four years of driving.I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed. No more angry shouts and no more horns! When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.11. A Driving ExperienceDHonesty, my mum always used to tell me, is the best policy. Of course, this didn’t include her when she told me that if I didn’t eat all my vegetables Father Christmas would find out and wouldn’t give me any presents. But when it comes to medicine, I had supposed it was important to always be honest with my patients. After all, the doctor patient relationship is based on trust, and therefore honesty is of great importance, Or so I thought.I had just started working in geriatrics(老年病科). Mr. McMahon was brought in when his body was found very swollen(浮肿). I took a medical history from hi s daughter who came with him in the ambulance. She’d been his main carer for years. I stood looking at him as she gave a detailed history. “Has he lost any weight recently?” I asked, “Well, it’s funny you should mention that, but yes.” She said slowly. There was silence for a few moments. “Why? What are you worried about?” she asked, I hesitated(犹豫). She was obviously very involved in his care and it was only fair that I told her the truth. “Well, we need to prove it’s not cancer.” I said and talked briefly about some of the tests I was going to take.Half an hour later, a nurse called me: “Mr. McMahon’s daughter broke down-she said you told her he had cancer.” My heart sank. By the time I arrived at the room where the patient stayed, my consultant was already there, explaining that we still had to run lots of tests and that it by no means means that he had cancer. I stood silently at the end of the bed. My consultant was obviously angry with me and as we left Mr. McMahon, she turned to me. “Why on earth did you do that?” she asked in disbelief. I looked at her and bit my lip. “She asked me what I was worried about and I told her.” I said, hanging my head. “And give her more to worry about?” replied my consultant. “You don’t say the word ‘cancer’ until it’s certain. Even if you doubt it, think very carefully before you tell people."As it turned out, it wasn’t cancer. But I did learn that when someone is nervous and worried about their loved one they’re sometimes selective in what they hear-and as a doctor it’s important to be mindful of this. In being truthful, I’d made the situation worse.16. It works your muscles and makes your heart work hard so as to send blood to your muscles. So, exercise makes your heart and muscles strong. Exercise also makes you feel refreshed. If you take regular exercises, you will stay happy and healthy. Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US, many people lack exercise because it is hard for them. People have to work from dawn till dusk, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. They cannot get much exercise sitting at desk passively. Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, the majority of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is unfavourable in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours and calls for too much attention. It makes a person very tired. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don't have the desire to take exercise after work.Today, many people in the West are overweight, which causes health problems for them. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So many people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don't see a difference right away, they will be discouraged and stop exercising.3. You may think you're too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly benefit you.Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities which opened up many new doors for me.Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on your applications. Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Being outgoing is considered a very good quality, which shows that you are determined and willing to put yourself out there and, best of all, try new things. What's more, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall in with the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubsare good places to spend time, with good people to fall back on. The most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefits it brings. The classroom isn't the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organised are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs. So if you haven't joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now.11.What can we learn from the second paragraphA. Getting useful life skills.D. Making full use of your free time.14.What's the author's purpose in writing the textA. To give tips on making new friends.B. To show ways to set up school clubs.C. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game. Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it does n’t solve the problem of not knowing the material an d it won’t help on the next test-unless the person cheats again. Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too. Some kids cheat because they' re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can't pass the test without cheating. Even when then: seems to be a “g ood reason”for cheating. Cheating isn’t a good idea.If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn't study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don't have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions(解决办法)together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.51. In some countries, because the man realizes that the traveler is tired and eager to reach his destination (目的地), he will politely say “Just down the road.”He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the wanted answer. So the American drives through the night, getting more and more angry, feeling “tricked”. He thinks the man deliberately(故意)lied to him, for obviously he must have known the distance quite well.Had conditions been reversed(颠倒), the American would have felt he was “cheating” the driver if he had said the next town was close when he knew it was really 15 miles further on.
