Moby-Dick

Moby-DickHerman Melville's "Moby-Dick" stands as an epic voyage into the heart of human obsession, the unfathomable depths of the ocean, and the existential quest for meaning. Published in 1851, this American classic is a multifaceted exploration of the human condition, blending elements of adventure, philosophy, and symbolism in a narrative that transcends its seafaring setting. At its surface, "Moby-Dick" is the tale of Captain Ahab's relentless pursuit of the elusive white whale, Moby Dick, who had previously maimed the captain. However, Melville weaves a tapestry that extends far beyond a simple revenge narrative. The novel is a philosophical odyssey that delves into the complexities of fate, the nature of good and evil, and the profound isolation inherent in the human experience. One of the novel's central themes is the exploration of the destructive force of obsession. Captain Ahab's monomaniacal quest for revenge against Moby Dick becomes a powerful metaphor for the all-consuming nature of human desires and the perilous consequences of unchecked ambition. Ahab's single-minded pursuit not only endangers the crew of the Pequod but also underscores the potential for self-destruction when one succumbs to the abyss of obsessive fixation.Melville's narrative style adds depth to the exploration of obsession, employing various literary techniques to evoke a sense of cosmicsignificance. The novel incorporates a range of genres, from adventure and philosophy to encyclopedic detail on whaling practices and marine biology. This amalgamation of styles creates a rich and immersive experience, mirroring the vastness and complexity of the sea itself. The character of Ishmael, the novel's narrator, serves as a literary device that allows readers to witness Ahab's obsession from a more detached perspective. Ishmael's reflective and philosophical musings provide insight into the deeper dimensions of the narrative, offering readers a lens through which to explore the existential questions posed by Ahab's quest and the enigmatic nature of the ocean."Moby-Dick" is also a symbolic exploration of the eternal struggle between man and nature. The white whale, Moby Dick, embodies the primal force of the natural world, indifferent to the desires and aspirations of humankind. Ahab's quest becomes a symbolic confrontation with the unknowable and uncontrollable forces that govern existence. The novel's depiction of the sea as both a source of life and a realm of peril reflects the timeless tension between human ambition and the vast, indifferent expanse of nature.Furthermore, Melville incorporates a rich tapestry of symbolism throughout the novel. The white whale, often seen as a symbol of the unknowable and transcendent, takes on various interpretations. Some view Moby Dick as a representation of the divine, an inscrutable forcethat eludes human understanding. Others see the whale as a manifestation of the existential void, an enigma that defies attempts to rationalize or control the mysteries of existence. The Pequod itself becomes a microcosm of society, with its diverse crew representing the complex tapestry of humanity. The multicultural makeup of the crew reflects Melville's exploration of diversity and the inherent tensions that arise when individuals from different backgrounds coexist in close quarters. This dynamic mirrors the broader societal challenges faced by 19th-century America, grappling with issues of race, class, and identity.Melville's narrative also explores the theme of isolation, both physical and existential. The vastness of the ocean becomes a metaphor for the isolation inherent in the human condition, highlighting the individual's struggle to find meaning and connection in a seemingly indifferent universe. The characters on the Pequod grapple with their own personal isolation, reflecting the broader human quest for purpose and understanding amid the vastness of existence."Moby-Dick" is a literary masterpiece that continues to resonate with readers, transcending its 19th-century origins to offer profound insights into the human condition. Melville's exploration of obsession, the struggle between man and nature, and the existential quest for meaning elevates the novel beyond its seafaring setting. Through itsrich symbolism, diverse characters, and philosophical depth, "Moby-Dick" invites readers on a timeless journey into the heart of the unknown, encouraging reflection on the complexities of human nature and the enduring mysteries of the universe.。

The loss of faith and the sense of futility and meaninglessness were expressed in Melville‘s works.

Herman Melville (1819 - 1891)Herman Melville (1819-1891) was born in New York City in 1819. His parents were of middle-class family background. Because of unwise investment, his father went bankrupt, and then went mad and died in 1832 when Melville was 13, leaving the family with large debts. Melville dropped out of school shortly after his father's death and went to work at the age of 15 in a variety of trades, a bank clerk, a salesman, a farmhand, a school teacher and in 1839 he decided to become a seaman, first signed on to a merchant ship that was going from Boston to Liverpool, England, and then in 1841 signed on for a long whaling journey to the South Seas. Melville did not find the sea life pleasant, for he saw much of injustice that occurred aboard the ship. After a year and a half at sea, Melville and a friend deserted their ship in a Pacific island. But they were captured by Typees, a Polynesian cannibal tribe. They stayed with cannibals for some time and then escaped separately. Melville returned home in 1844. His life at sea proved to be very important for Melville. He once said that a whaling ship and the extensive reading he did while he was at sea was his Yale and Harvard.Melville’s early works are basically a reflection of his varied life experiences. Therefore, it will be difficult to understand his works without knowing his life story. The world in Melville’s fiction mirrors the world he saw—defined by the rough seas and widespread evil. Anyone who boards his ships should have lost innocence already and should expect the unexpected. What he can count on are love of brotherhood, which is in keeping with Melville’s social vision. In many of Melville’s works, we can see another characteristic of Melville’s works, that is, his universe is the single-sex universe, all males and no females.Appreciation of Moby-DickMelville is best known as the author of one book, Moby-Dick, which is one of the world's greatest masterpieces. It is an encyclopedia of everything, history, philosophy, religion, etc. in addition to a detailed account of the operations of the whaling industry. But it is first a Shakespearean tragedy of man fighting against an overwhelming force in a hostile environment. It is a symbolic voyage of the mind in quest of the truth and knowledge of the universe, a spiritual exploration into man's deep reality and psychology. Whaling is a perfect metaphor for the pursuit of knowledge.Stylea. The use of allegory and symbolismInstead of putting the battle between Ahab and the whale into a simple statement of facts, Melville uses a lot of symbols and expresses rich allegorical meanings. For example, the crew members on the Pequod are made up of the white, red, black, yellow, and brown races. It is a microcosmic微观世界的, 微观的presentation of multicultural society of the United States, or even of the whole human society. The voyage to discover Moby Dick becomes a search for truth or the ultimate force governing the cosmos. The whaler, which represents human society, is defeated by Moby Dick, which represents nature. This tragic defeat suggests that by no means can human society be compared to nature.b. The production of the first American prose epic. An epic is generally a long poem on an important theme. Although the book is presented in the form of a novel, at times it seems like a prose poem. LanguageDifferent levels of language use and styles may confuse the readers at first, but they turn the whole book into a symphony with all musical instruments going on to form a melody.Moby-Dick is Melville’s most famous novel. Just like Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Moby-Dick is highly ambiguous.Critics understand it in strikingly different ways.First, it can be understand as a tragedy of man fighting against an overwhelming force in an indifferent and even hostile environment. Thus, Captain Ahab亚哈is a hero who dares to fight though he failed at last.Secondly, it can be understood as a bitter satire on Transcendentalism’s emphasis on self-reliance. Captain Ahab believes in his own power too much and thus he is doomed to fail, because human’s power is limited and there is a mysterious thing exists in the universe which controls man’s life and cannot be understood by human being.Thirdly, it also can be understood as a tragedy of Ahab because of his blasphemy亵渎神明的行为, which causes the death of him and all his crew except Ishmael. Therefore, Ahab is the symbol of evil, while Moby Dick is the symbol of God or some supernatural power.Lastly, nowadays some people think that the story means man should protect the nature otherwise man will be punished as those whalers in the story were punished by the whale. In my personal opinion, I believe the third understanding is more reasonable. Hereafter, I will give you an explanation in the light of the third understanding. The Biblical and historical references of the names in Moby-DickIn Moby-Dick, All the names, including those of the members of the Pequod's crew and the names of all the ships, are carefully chosen. They are either biblical in origin or have some other historical references. Therefore, an analysis of some major names will help us greatly to understand the themes of the novel.Ishmael以实玛利:亚伯拉罕之子,在以撒出生后被弃。

Ishmael • Ishmael enters the story as a social outcast, reminding us biblically of Abraham’s illegitimate son who is disinherited and cast out of the palace. During the voyage, he gets to know all kinds of people and builds up a friendship with Queequeg. • The warmth and love he gets from Queequeg is humanizing in his ruthless hunt for whales. • In the end, he is saved by Queequeg’s coffin, symbolizing a restoration to humanity.

Moby Dick

Moby Dick

Moby DickMoby-Dick, also known as The Whale, is a novel first published in 1851 by American author Herman Melville. Moby-Dick is widely considered to be a Great American Novel and a treasure of world literature. The story tells the adventures of the wandering sailor Ishmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab seeks one specific whale: Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white whale. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg. Ahab intends to take revenge. In Moby-Dick, Melville employs stylized language, symbolism, and metaphor to explore numerous complex themes. Through the main character's journey, the concepts of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of gods are all examined as Ishmael speculates upon his personal beliefs and his place in the universe. The narrator's reflections, along with his descriptions of a sailor's life aboard a whaling ship, are woven into the narrative along with Shakespearean literary devices such as stage directions, extended soliloquies, and asides. The book portrays insecurity that is still seen today when it comes to non-human beings along with the belief that these beings understand and act like humans. The story is based on the actual events around the whaleship Essex, which was attacked by a whale while at sea and sank.Although the narrator sees insanity in Ahab, Melville’s emotional sympathy is with the deficient Ahab. He begins with a noble intention to crush evil, but in taking this to the extreme, he becomes evil himself. He is destroyed by his consuming desire to root out evil. Moby Dick is a symbol to represent cruel, brutal, malicious powers of nature. Nature is capable of destroying the human world. Nature threatens humanity & thus calls out the heroic powers of the human beings. So the power of the universe is both of blessing and curse. In this way, the author constructs a complicated statement about American view of nature. There is symbolism in the book. The V oyage itself is a metaphor for "search and discovery, the search for the ultimate truth of experience." The Pequod is the ship of the American soul, and the endeavor of its crew represents "the maniacal fanaticism of our white mental consciousness". By far the most conspicuous symbol in the book is, of course, Moby Dick. The white whale is capable of many interpretations. It is a symbol of evil to some, readers of goodness to others, and of both to still others. He is "paradoxically benign and malevolent, nourishing and destructive," "massive, brutal, monolithic, but at the same time protean, erotically beautiful, infinitely variable." Its whiteness is a paradoxical color, too, signifying as it does death and corruption as well as purity, innocence, and youth. It represents the final mystery of the universe which man will do well to desist from pursuing. As Ahab and his crew do not leave it alone, it is only natural that they get drowned.。

It exists in nature and man alike and constitutes the chief element of the universe.② transcendentalists stressed the primacy of the individual.Emerson strongly believes in the divinity and infinity of man as an individual. Since man is divine, he can totally rely on himself. And self-reliance in turn leads to self-improvement, self-cultivation and self-perfection. Man is important to the whole society, whose regeneration relies on the regeneration of the individual.③the primacy of nature: transcendentalists offered a freshperception of nature as symbolic of the spirit of God or the Spirit. Emerson’s nature is the garment of the over-soul, symbolic and moral-bound. Nature is not something purely of the matter, but alive with God’s overwhelming presence. Besides, it exercises a healthy and restorative influence on human beings.2.What are Poe’s theories for the short story and poetry?Poe’s theories for the short story and poetry are remarkable in their clarity. He thinks the short story must be of such length as to be read at one sitting, so as to ensure the totality of impression. The very first sentence ought to help to bring out the “single effect” of the story. No word should be used which does not contribute to the “Pre-established” design of the work. Poe’s poetic theories are best elucidated in his “The Philosophy of Composition” and “The Poetic Principle.” He asserts the poem should be short, readable at one sitting and no more than 100 lines. Its chief aim is beauty, namely, to produce a feeling of beauty in the reader. Melancholy is the most legitimate of all the poetic tones. He concludes that “The death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world. Poe stresses rhythm, define s true poetry as “the rhythmical creation of beauty,” and declared that “music is the perfection of the soul, or idea, of poetry.”3.What is Transcendentalism?答案(略)NOTE: 本题答案可参看书上的内容,结合课堂讲解和第一题进行总结。

Herman Melville

Soon gathering the crewmen together, with a rousing speech Ahab secures their support for his single, secret purpose for this voyage: hunting down and killing Moby Dick, an old, very large sperm whale, with a snow-white hump 背部 and mottled 斑点的 skin, that crippled Ahab on his last whaling voyage. Only Starbuck shows any sign of resistance to the charismatic but monomaniacal captain. The first mate argues repeatedly that the ship‟s purpose should be to hunt whales for their oil, with luck returning home profitably, safely, and quickly, but not to seek out and kill Moby Dick in particular — and especially not for revenge. Eventually even Starbuck acquiesces to Ahab‟s will, though harboring misgivings.

白鲸读后感英文

白鲸读后感英文

白鲸读后感英文After reading the novel "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville, I was deeply moved by the story of the white whale. The novel tells the story of Captain Ahab's relentless pursuit of the great white whale, Moby Dick, and the crew of the Pequod. It is a tale of obsession, revenge, and the destructive power of man's unchecked ambition. One of the most striking aspects of the novel is its exploration of the theme of obsession. Captain Ahab's single-minded pursuit of Moby Dick consumes him, leading to the destruction of his ship and the death of most of his crew. Ahab's obsession with the whale becomes a metaphor for the destructive nature of unchecked ambition and the consequences of allowing one's desires to consume them. The character of Moby Dick himself is also a powerful symbol in the novel. The great white whale represents the unknowable and uncontrollable forces of nature, as well as the futility of man's attempts to conquer them. Moby Dick is a force of nature, and his encounters with Ahab and the crew of the Pequod serve as a reminder of the limits of human power and the consequences of overreaching.Melville's writing is rich and evocative, painting a vivid picture of life at sea and the dangers of the whaling industry. His descriptions of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it are both beautiful and haunting, adding depth and atmosphere to the story. The novel's themes of fate, free will, and the struggle between man and nature are timeless and continue to resonate with readers today. In conclusion, "Moby Dick" is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that explores the themes of obsession, ambition, and the struggle between man and nature. Melville's writing is both beautiful and haunting, and his characters are complex and compelling. The story of the white whale is a timeless tale that continues to captivate readers and provoke deep reflection on the human condition. I highly recommend this novel to anyone seeking a thought-provoking and immersive reading experience.。

白鲸象征意义赏析

白鲸象征意义赏析

Moby-Dick is a highly symbolic work, and is interesting in that it also addresses issues such as natural history. Other themes include obsession, religion, idealism versus pragmatism, revenge, racism, hierarchical relationships, and politics.SymbolismAll of the members of the Pequod's crew have biblical-sounding, improbable, or descriptive names, and the narrator deliberately avoids specifying the exact time of the events and some other similar details. These together suggest that the narrator—and not just Melville—is deliberately casting his tale in an epic and allegorical mode. The white whale itself, for example, has been read as symbolically representative of good and evil, as has Ahab. The white whale has also been seen as a metaphor for the elements of life that are out of our control, or God.[citation needed]The Pequod's quest to hunt down Moby-Dick itself is also widely viewed as allegorical. To Ahab, killing the whale becomes the ultimate goal in his life, and this observation can also be expanded allegorically so that the whale represents everyone's goals. Furthermore, his vengeance against the whale is analogous to man's struggle against fate. The only escape from Ahab's vision is seen through the Pequod's occasional encounters with other ships, called gams. Readers could consider what exactly Ahab will do if he, in fact, succeeds in his quest: having accomplished his ultimate goal, what else is there left for him to do? Similarly, Melville may be implying that people in general need something to reach for in life, or that such a goal can destroy one if allowed to overtake all other concerns. Some such things are hinted at early on in the book, when the main character, Ishmael, is sharing a cold bed with his newfound friend, Queequeg:... truely to enjoy bodily warmth, some small part of you must be cold, for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more.—Moby-Dick, Ch. 11Ahab's pipe is widely looked upon as the riddance of happiness in Ahab's life. By throwing the pipe overboard, Ahab signifies that he no longer can enjoy simple pleasures in life; instead, he dedicates his entire life to the pursuit of his obsession, the killing of the white whale, Moby-Dick.A number of biblical themes occur. The book contains multiple implic it and explicit allusions to the story of Jonah, in addition to the use of certain biblical names (see below).Ishmael's musings also allude to themes common among the American Transcendentalists and parallel certain themes in European Romanticism and the philosophy of Hegel. In the poetry of Whitman and the prose writings of Emerson and Thoreau, a ship at sea is sometimes a metaphor for the soul.《白鲸记》是一个极具象征意义的工作,而且很有趣,因为它还去自然历史等问题。

Three aspects
• A kind of mental disorder • Loneliness leads to a situation where Ahab creates a “wall” of himself • Self-rejection and oppressive cultural super ego
Loneliness and selfhood
Ahab is too much of a self-reliant individual to be good human being. To him, the word exists for his sake. He is asserting his private personality, he denies ruthlessly the humanity and individuality of his fellowmen.
A kind of mental disorder
1.Melville thinks that voyage is the way to get rid of hard life, depression, cynicism and mania(狂 躁症). That „s why Ahab choose to venture on the sea. 2.Ahab is a typical case in Folyd‟s theory(弗洛伊 德). The characters of Ahab, especially his courage and ambition to kill the whale, are rather abnormal. 3.According to the standard of modern psyche, Ahab suffers from depression, delusion狂想症, autism自闭症, obsession 强迫症
• Melville hints that everyone has a mind of prisoner(心灵囚徒). Like Ahab, what he really fighting with is himself, not Moby Dick. He keeps caring about his lost leg which reminds him of the challenge he must to face.

Ahab’s mind of prisoner

Self-rejection and oppressive cultural super ego
Moby Dick is the vivid portrayal of social psychology during 19th century in America. Many people want to harmonize the Christian doctrines and Enlightenment beliefs while the two thoughts were in fighting.
• oppressive cultural super ego: Melville are effected by the social and Calvinists (加尔文教), and he strongly believes such customs. He is also striving for harmony between the two thoughts. This is the oppressive cultural supper ego.(压迫性文化的超我)
