This area is called 藕花深处 meaning in thedepthsof lotusflowers. It is so named because it is located in the middle of the pond filed with lotus flowers. When the pavilion was first built, itwas accessible only by the zigzag bridge fromthewest; thebridge from the east had yet to bebuilt.
Nowwe come to a verysmell islet called清芬屿 meaningdelicate fragranceislet.Wecan see a palatialstructureknown as 颂芬堂 meaning Fragrance-eulogizingHall.Itwasonce used as the Yang familyancestral temple.
Now we come to an archway inscribe with four Chinese characters具区胜境 meaning the wonderland of具区.具区，震泽，笠泽，五湖and洞庭are the five namesreferringto this lake on differentoccasions. Onthe other side of thearchway, wecanfind four Chinese characters---横云山庄，meaning Hengyun MountainVilla, whichas you may remember wastheoriginalname of this garentlemen, weare now on our way to the TurtleHeadPark. It’s a Five A Tourist Attraction.Itwill take about 20 minutes for us to getthere, locatedsome 18kilometerstothe south-west of downtownWuxi. The park is on a peninsula protruding intoLakeTaiand is in the shape of a turtle’shead. Hencethe name---Turtle Head Park
Now we come to a huge rock inscribed with eight Chinesecharacters:无锡充满温情和水 meaning Wuxi is filled withwarmth and water.It was a catchphrase forWuxitourismduring the 1990s,but it hasbeenrecently changedsimplyto :Wuxiisa niceplace. Onthe other side of thisrock, wecan find thelyrics ofaJapanese pop song called无锡旅情 in ChineseorJourney toWuxiin English or muxiagu-liaojiao in Japanese, sungby the well-knownJapanese singer Ogata Daisaku.Onemillioncopies of theserecordweresold inJapanwhichactually helped to makeWuxia popular tourist destinationforJapanese tourists inChinaduring the late 1980s.
If you had the advantage of an aerialview, youcould see that we are now standing on the turtle’shead. Thislighthousewas originally built in 1924 and was rebuilt in 1982.Itis nowtheiconic building of the Turtle headPark. Standingatthisplace, wecan see three turtle-shapedsmallisletsfloating on the lake.They are known as 三山or three hills.The nearest islet is about2.6 kmfrom where we stand.Thehighesthill has a height of49.8 m. Roads and bridges have beenbuilttoconnect these hillsso that you can walk around to enjoythe beautifulscenerythere.It is now a veryattractivescenic spot known as theCelestialIslandofLakeTai,where you can see many buildings and sculpturesrelatedto Taoism.
This palatial structure having verandason three ofitssidesis called澄澜hall. It was built in 1931 and named after thewater oftheLakeTai.澄meansthe limpidness or stillnessof the water,while澜means the billow or wave. It suggeststhat you can appreciate the ever-changing beauty ofLakeTaifrom this vantage point in any season of the year, at anytime oftheday or in any weather.
The three Chinese characters on this rock read 鼋头渚,meaning turtle head peninsula,and itwas written by秦敦世,who was a successful candidate inimperial examination at the provincial-level during the reign of 光绪 of the QingDynasty. Thefour Chinese characters on the other side of the rock read鼋渚春涛meaningSpring Billow at the Turtle HeadPeninsula.It was written in 1946 by刘春霖。The last NO.1Scholar in the imperial examination held in 1904 during the Qing Dynasty.
Let’s take a look attheChinesecharacters on the cliff in the distance. The set with two characters read HengYun asIsaidearly,It was the name by which Yang Hanxi’s garden was onceknown.The other set with four Chinese characters read:包孕吴越meaningEmbracing and NurturingWu and Yue,which suggeststhe Lake Tai has theState Wu and State Yue in its embrace and it has nurtured the peoplefrom this to ancient states. Thesecharacters were all written in 1891 by廖伦，a county magistrateof Wuxiduring the Qing Dynasty.
The plaque with three Chinese characters澄澜堂，was originally written by Hua Shikui, a calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty which was later transcribed by Wang Mengqian. In the hall,thereis a plaque hung in the centre which has four Chinese characters天然图画meaning naturalpainting. On the pillarswe can see a poem writtenby Chen Kuilong. It readsinChinese:山横马迹，渚峙鼋头，尽纳湖光开绿野，雨卷珠帘,云飞画栋，此间风景胜洪都meaning Themountainlies acrossMaji,The isletsstandacross from the turtle head, All the scenery ofthe lakeand the open greenview are taken in.The rain formscurtainsof beads.The cloudflies overpainted ridgepoles, The scenery hereisfarbetter thanthat ofHongdu.
