AOn the way to my company, I was driving behind a small truck. I was a few minutes late and watching the two men ahead of me talking in that slow truck made me angry. The light turned green, but the truck was still moving very slowly. I became impatient, so I turned right to go past it. Suddenly, a new blue Chevy Silverado was rushing by. I tried to stop, but my car hit the side of the Chevy.“Pow!” I heard a big noise and then I realized that an acciden t happened. For a moment, just a moment... I asked if I was OK, and honestly, I was waiting for people to come over and help me. Those thoughts didn't last long, as the answer came into my mind that the air bag had saved me. Luckily, I was still alive.Slowly I opened the door. The warm, bright morning sunlight hit my face and I felt better. I saw the Chevy Silverado and I ran over to check if the driver in it was injured. “Are you OK?”Ishouted loudly through the window. His h ead was down, eyes closed, and he didn't answer me.At that moment, I thought I was looking at a dead man. Full of fear, I shouted again, and knocked at the window heavily once more. His eyes started to open, and he slowly shook his head, “Yes.”Once again,I said to myself, “How luc ky I am!”21.The writer was in such a hurry because ______.A.he must wait for the green lights B.his car was behind a slow truckC.he wanted to go past the small truck D.he was a little bit late for his work 22.The time when the accident happened was ________.A.in the afternoon B.at noon C.in the morning D.in the evening 23.Which of the following is WRONG according to the passage?A.Someone else helped the writer when the accident happened.B.The writer's car hit the side of the Chevy Silverado.C.The driver of the Chevy Silverado didn't answer the driver at first.D.There were at least two men in the slow truck.BBefore you were my teacher, I thought that teaching was the last thing I wanted to do. Why would someone want to come in every day and attempt to instruct students, many of whom couldn't care less, or to get paid very little compared with the work he or she put in?You may have thought that the only thing I was learning from you was the course, but that’s not all l learned. From reference books to funny jokes, you made each class exciting. You always tried to make class charming so that we could be excited about learning. However, those days have gone by.Whenever I was confused and needed extra help, you were the exact one to turn to. I would walk into your room for help and there would be several kids. You ran from one student to the next helping each one through their confusion. You could have gone back home after the bell rang. Instead, you chose to Stay and care about what your students did.You didn't only care about my learning, but you also cared about other things I was involved in. At the beginning of the year, we wrote down our hobbies and interests. You remembered what we wrote, too. I had missed class for track meets (田径运动会)and when I came back the next day,you would ask me how it went. Many of the teachers never bothered to ask what I liked to do.These things showed me the value of teaching. They showed me how much of an influence a teacher can have on a student. I want to be the one that influences students and pushes them toward success. I want students to leave my classroom thinking that their time was worthwhile (值得的). I want to be the inspiration for them that you were for me. Whenever it gets hard for me to continue on this path, I’ll remember you and what you did for me.24. The successful students whom a teacher has taught,D. The influence on students’ developmen t in the future.CWhat does it take to be a good neighbor?Over the years I have had all kinds of neighbors, ones that were enjo yable and others that were to be avoided at all costs. One of the most important things in being a good neighbor is to r espect尊敬a person’s privacy(隐私).When someone new moves into the neighborhood it is a good idea to watch them to see how friendly you should be. If you go rushing over as soon as they move in they may think you are going to be one of those neighbors that come over at all times of the day,not respectin g their privacy. It is a good idea always to be friendly to everyone in the neighborhood. This can not only put you on good terms with them, but will also be a form of protection for your family and home. If you wave as they drive by or offer a friendly hello while they are out in their yard this shows that you respect them. If you are friendly to them they are much more likely可能的to watch out for any wrong doings going on around your home while you are out and let you know if anything happens.Another way of being a good neighbor is to be helpful in times of need. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand doing something or in times of a disaster(灾难),it is good to offer your help.Even though you have never really talked to the people down the street, they are willing愿意的to take the time to help out a neighbor in need.In conclusion,if you r espect a person’s privacy, treat them kindly and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbor and anyone would be happy to have you next door! 28.When someone moves into your neighborhood you should.A.visit them as often as possible B.show respect for themC.learn about s ome of their privacy D.avoid meeting them29.If you are getting along well with your neighbors you can.A.have your own privacy B.often visit their yardC.make close friends with them D.keep your family members safe30.What’s the main idea of the fourth paragraph?A.Neighbors should help each other.B.Everybody probably gets i nto trouble.C.Neighbors should respect each other.D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.31.In the opinio n of the author, neighbors should always be.A.helpful,strong and kind B.honest, active and friendlyC.respectful, friendly and helpful D.polite, honest and kindDSafe Travel AbroadPreparing to go traveling abroad can be really stressful (有压力的), especially if you don’t know what to expect. Concerned that young boys might not go for a book written by a woman, her publisher suggested she come up with a pseudonym. So, upon combining her first initial with the initial of her paternal grandmother, Kathleen, the moniker J.K.Rowling was born.Interesting fact about Rowling:apparently, she can only fool some of the people some of the time.Back in April of this year, a crime novel appeared on the shelves. It was entitled The Cuckoo's Calling, and it was written by Robert Galbraith. According to Galbraith’s bio, he spent “sever al years with the Royal Military Police” and the leading character of his novel, a fellow by the name of Cormoran Strike, “grew directly out of his own experiences and those of his military friends.” Only, upon further review, he didn’t! The book was actua lly penned by J.K.Rowling, who apparently wanted to try and sell a novel based on complete craftsmanship rather than on her name.Unfortunately, however, the wife of a partner in the media firm in whom she placed he trust, shared the secret on Twitter. Rowling was angry and disappointed concerning the betraying of trust.I'm not sure whether I would be terribly upset for too long, if I were her. Previous to her being knownas the author, Rowling saw her book listed 4,709th on Amazon. After the big reveal, her book jumped all the way to No.1!More importantly, I think she got what she wanted. The novel has received nearly universal critical acclaim. Rowling passed her own test with flying colors. Clearly, she’s pretty good at her craft! In any case, I personally look forward to reading her newest writing endeavor.24. Why was Joanne Rowling advised to use a male pen name?A. It was a common practice.B. Her grandmother didn’t like her name.C. The publisher wanted to give readers a surprise.D. Women writers might not be popular with boy readers.25. Why didn’t J.K.Rowling publish her new book under her name?A. She thought her name was out of date.B. She intended to prove her writing ability.C. Readers didn’t like her books any longer.D. She thought a new name could make her more popular.26. What does the word“acclaim”underlined in Paragraph 6 mean?A. High praiseB. Great respectC. Severe criticismD. Much sympathy27. What is the best title of the text?A. The Book is Off SaleB. Her Door is OpenC. The Secret is OutD. Her Effort is in VainCPlants cannot run or hide, so they need other strategies to avoid being eaten. Some curl up their leaves; others produce chemicals to make themselves taste bad if they sense animals drooling on them, chewing them up or laying eggs on them—all signals of an attack. New research now shows some flora can feel a plant-eating animal well before it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive(抢先的)defense that even works against other pest species. When ecologist John Orroek of the University of Wisconsin-Madison sprayed snail slime—a liquid the animals release as they slide along—into soil, nearby tomato plants appeared to notice. They increasedtheir levels of an enzyme(生化酶), which is known to prevent plant-eating animals. “None of the plants were ever actually attacked.” Orrock says. “We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was coming, and that was enough to cause big changes in their chemistry.”Initially Orrock found this defense worked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning impact on another potential threat. The investigators found that hungry-caterpillars(毛虫), which usually eat tomato leaves greedily, had no appetite for them after the plants were exposed to snail slime and activated their chemical resistance. This nonspecific defense may be a strategy that benefits the plants by further improving their overall possibilities of survival, says Orrock, who reported the results with his colleagues in March in Oecologia. The finding that a snail’s approach can cause a plant response that affects a different animal made Richard Karban curious, a plant communications expert, who was not involved in the study. “It is significant that the plants are responding before being damaged and that these cues are having such far-ranging effects,” Karban says. The research was comprehensive, he adds, but he wondered how the tomato plants felt chemicals in snail slim that never actually touched them.“That’s the million-dollar question,” Orrock says. He hopes future research will make out the mechanisms that enable plants to sense these relatively distant cues.28. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. A Defense AttackB. Gree dy AnimalsC. A Snail’s ApproachD. Watchful Plants29. John Orrock sprayed a liquid into soil nearby tomato plants to_______.A. give tomato plants a warningB. make them grow betterC. keep plant—eating animals awayD. inform plant-eating animals of danger30. Why is the example of “caterpillars” mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. To introduce another animal.B. To confirm the result of the study.C. To appeal to people to protect animals.D. To analyse different resistance chemicals.31. What does Richard Karban really want to know?A. How tomato plants become aware of danger.B. What the chemicals in the snail slime are.C. Whether the research is of practical value.D. What the finding of the research is.DOpen Letter to an EditorI had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently –one who works for you. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That’s what you want for him, too, isn’t it?So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists- everyone- is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potentia l. 第I 卷(选择题)一、阅读理解On the way to my company, I was driving behind a small truck. I was a few minutes late and watching the two men ahead of me talking in that slow truck made me angry. The light turned green, but the truck was still moving very slowly. I became impatient, so I turned right to go past it. Suddenly, a new blue Chevy Silverado was rushing by. I tried to stop, but my car hit the side of the Chevy.“Pow !” I heard a big noise and then I realized that an accident happened. “Are you OK ?”I shouted loudly through the window. His head was down, eyes closed, and he didn't answer me.At that moment, I thought I was looking at a dead man. Full of fear, I shouted again, and knocked at the window heavily once more. I had missed class for track meets (田径运动会)and when I came back the next day, you would ask me how it went. If you go rushing over as soon as they move in they may think you are going to be one of those neighbors that come over at all times of the day,not respecting their privacy. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand doing something or in times of a disaster(灾难),it is good to offer your help. Even though you have never really talked to the people down the street, they are willing愿意的to take the time to help out a neighbor in need.In conclusion,if you respect a person’s privacy, treat them kindly and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbor and anyone would be happy to have you next door!8.When someone moves into your neighborhood you should .A.visit them as often as possible B.show respect for themC.learn about some of their privacy D.avoid meeting them9.If you are getting along well with your neighbors you can .A.have your own privacy B.often visit their yardC.make close friends with them D.keep your family members safe10.What’s the main idea of the fourth paragraph?A.Neighbors should help each other.B.Everybody probably gets into trouble.C.Neighbors should respect each other.D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.11.In the opinion of the author, neighbors should always be .A.helpful,strong and kind B.honest, active and friendlyC.respectful, friendly and helpful D.polite, honest and kindSafe Travel AbroadPreparing to go traveling abroad can be really stressful (有压力的), especially if you don’t know what to expect. He then began a lifelong connection with rice.Yuan succeeded in growing the world’s first high-yielding hybrid rice varieties in 1973, which could reach a yield of over 500 kg per mu (about 0.067 hectares), rising from the previous yield of only 300 kg per mu. For the next four decades, he continued to work on research and development of hybrid rice, achieving increasingly higher outputs. In 2020, hybrid rice developed by Yuan’s team achieved 1,500 kilograms per mu in two growing seasons, a new world record.InChina, where rice is the main food for the majority of the 1.4 billion people, the planting area of hybrid rice has reached 16 million hectares, or 57 % of the total planting area of rice, helping feed an extra 80 million people a year.Hybrid rice has also been grown in over 40 countries, including theU.S.,Brazil,India,Vietnam, thePhilippinesandMadagascar. The total planting area of the hybrid rice has reached 8 million hectares overseas.Even after a great success, Yuan never held himself back from making new breakthroughs. In 2017, his team started to grow seawater rice inQingdao. The rice was designed to grow in saline-alkaline land and survive even after being completely in seawater. His team planned to develop a type of seawater rice that could be planted in 6.67 million hectares of saline-alkaline land acrossChinato boost the country’s rice harvest by about 20 %. In 2018, Yuan’s team was invited to plant the saline-alkaline tolerant rice in experimental fields inDubai, which achieved huge success. In June 2020, his team started to grow seawater rice on a farm at an altitude of 2,800 meters in northwestChina’sQinghaiProvince. Back then, businesses sold many products connected to the event and many such products are now on sales again — in celebration of the moon landing’s 50th anniversary.A limited number of Omega’s gold Speedmaster watches — the same kind that Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon — will be sold at $34,600. Omega Speedmaster watches have been an important part of space travel since NASA chose them for its moon landing in 1965. Other watches had failed required tests. They work even when writing upside down. Now Fisher Space Pen Company has a limited-edition pen for sale at anout-of this-worldprice: $700, with real material from the Apollo 11 spacecraft.Back in 1969, companies were quick to show their Apollo 11 connections with media and advertisements. The food company Stouffer’s made sure consumers knew it provided food for Apollo 11 astronauts once they returned to Earth. It started the ad campaign “Everybody who’s been to the moon is eating Stouffer’s”. Fifty yearslater, the company is celebrating with a media campaign to share some recipes from 1969.Marketing experts David Meerman Scott says, “Since 1972,we’ve gone around and around the earth many times, and it is not interesting to people any more. The oil and gas industry has forcefully used the technique known as hydraulic fracturing (水力压裂法) to destroy sub-surface rock and liberate the oil and gas hiding there. But the process results in large amounts of chemical-filled waste water. Horizontal drilling (水平钻孔) for oil can also produce large amount of natural, unwanted salt water. The industry deals with this waste water by pumping it into deep wells. On Monday, the US Geological Survey published for the first time an earthquake disaster map covering both natural and “induced” quakes. The map and a report show that parts of the central United States now face a ground-shaking disaster equal to the famously unstable terrain (不稳定地形) of California. Some 7 million people live in places easily attacked by these man-made quakes, the USGS said The list of places at highest risk of man-made earthquakes includes Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Ohio and Alabama. Most of these earthquakes are ly small, in the range of magnitude (震级) 3, but some have been more powerful, including a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in 2011 in Oklahoma that was connected to waste water filling.Scientists said they do not know ifthere is an upper limit on the magnitude of man-made earthquakes; this is an area of active research Oklahoma has had prehistoric earthquakes as powerful as magnitude 7.It's not immediately clear whether this new research will change industry practices, or even whether it will surprise anyone in the areas of newly supposed danger. In Oklahoma, for example, the natural rate of earthquakes is only one or two a year, but there have been hundreds since hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, with the waste water filling, became common in the last ten years.12. What kind of human activities can cause earthquakes?A. The man-made produced waste water in the factories.B. The process of digging deep wells in those poor areas.C. The advanced techniques used to deal with waste water.D. The oil or gas industry's work connected with the earth.13. What does the underlined word “induced” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Man-made.B. Planners, politicians and media keep showing off their benefits: reducing pollution, congestion, travel costs and oil dependence, while improving public health. Bike sharing also helps make cities appear modern, dynamic and world-wide-----qualities much sought after by the creative class. But what makes for a successful public bike-sharing program? This is an important question because installing one requires significant public and private investment and adjustment to the built environment. While many programs have been launched among much praise, often their popularity has soon declined. Many end up operating at a financial loss and depend on other profitable enterprises to cross-subsidize (交叉补贴) them. Some have resulted in thrown-away bikes becoming an eyesore.Understanding which factors enhance or stop public bike sharing is critical in helping cities decide whether such a program is workable, before considering what design and sitting will work best.Drawing on current knowledge, we discuss the importance of the local landscape, climate, cycling infrastructure (基础设施) and land use. We also touch on other factors, such as the legal environment and the characteristics of the bike-sharing program itself.Take natural environment for example. Two natural environment factors are known to affect participation: hilliness and weather. Hilliness discourages balanced bike-sharing use, as users avoid returning bicycles to stations on hilltops. Those stations end up being empty, while stations on flat areas are often full, so users cannot find a station to return their bikes. As for weather, ideal temperature ranges vary by the climate zone. Case studies show warm and dry weather encourages public bike-sharing use. Rain and strong wind reduce the frequency of trips. However, some approaches, such as providing sheltered, shaded, or even heated or cooled cycling infrastructure, could prove useful.24.What can we infer about bike sharing from Paragraph 1?A.It has no disadvantage.B. It is welcomed worldwide.C.It can solve every problem.D. It is the symbol of modern cities.25.What is the current situation of bike-sharing programs?A.Many of them run at a loss.B.Most of them make huge profits.C.They are the most promising business.D.Their development is determined bypublic investment.26.Why does the author mention the natural environment?A.To show user’s interest in various natural environment.B.To show the decisive function of natural environment.C.To show the necessity of bike-sharing programs.D.To show the significance of some factors.27.Which of the following might increase bike-sharing use?A.Hilliness.B.Attractive bikes.C.Rain and strong windD. Perfect cyclinginfrastructureCRecently a study, led by Pedro Hallal of the Federal University, suggests that nearly a third of adults, 31%, are not getting enough exercise. That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth have helped to create a world in which taking exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity. But only recently have enough good data been collected from enough places to carry out the sort of analysis Dr Hallal and his colleagues have engaged in.There are common themes in different places. Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise less than men—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Croatia, Finland, Iraq and Luxembourg, for example, move more than their male countrymen.Malta wins the race for most slothful country, with 72% of adults getting too little exercise, and Swaziland and Saudi Arabia are in close behind, with 69%. In Bangladesh, just 5% of adults fail to exercise enough. Surprisingly, six Americans in ten are active enough according to Dr Hallal’s study, compared with fewer than four in ten British. These high rates of inactivity are worrying. Human beings seem to have evolved to benefit from exercise while deliberately avoiding it whenever they can. In a state of nature it would be impossible to live a life that did not provide enough of it. But that is no longer the case. Actually lack of enough activity these days has nearly the same effect on life span as smoking.28. We may learn from Paragraph 1 that _________.A. the decline of exercise rates is newly discoveredB. the study suggests 31% of female adults get too little exerciseC. the industrial revolution has changed the way people live to some degreeD. the good enough data has been collected from only one country29. According to the study, women of Luxembourg _________.A. have little time to exerciseB. hate to get regular exerciseC. take more exercise to lose weightD. exercise more than men in their country30. The underlined word “slothful” in Paragraph 3 most probably means _________.A. lazyB. richC. powerfulD. unpopular31. What can be the best title for the text?A. Benefits of Taking ExerciseB. New Health DiscoveryC. Evolvement of Human BeingsD. Worldwide Lack of Enough ExerciseDGetting stitched(缝合)up by Dr. Robot may one day be reality. Scientists have created a robotic system which did just that in living animals without a real doctor pulling the strings. Much like engineers are designing self-driving cars, the medical research is part of a move toward autonomous surgical robots, removing the surgeon’s hands from certain tasks that a machine might perform all by itself.Doctors wouldn’t leave the bedside they’re supposed to watch. P lus they’d handle the rest of the surgery. In small tests using pigs, the robotic arm performed at least as well, and in some cases a bit better, as some competing surgeons in stitching together intestinal(肠的)tissue. “The purpose wasn’t to replace surgeons, ”said Dr. Kim who led the project. “If you have all intelligent tool that works with a surgeon, can it improve the outcome? That’s what we have done. ”If you’ve heard about machines like the popular Da Vinci system, you might think robots already are operating. Not really. Today many hospitals offer robot-assisted surgery where surgeons use the machinery as tools that they control by hand to operate through tiny openings in the body. But robot-assisted surgery has been controversial, as some studies have shown it can bring higher costs without better outcomes.Kim’s team at Children’s Sheikh Zayed Institute invented the new STAR system—it stands for Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot—works sort of like a programmable sewing machine. They added sensors to help guide each stitch and tell how tightly to pull. But the approach wasn’t perfect. In the living animals, the robot took much longer and made a few stitching mistakes while the surgeon sewing by hand made none. Kim said the robot can be sped up. He hopes to begin human studies in two or three years.32. What’s the best title for the text?A. A new robotic systemB. A new-style way of stitchingC. The newly-designed driverless vehiclesD. Robot surgeons one step closer to reality33. What will surgeons do when Dr. Robot is used in surgery?A. They can help pull the strings.B. They rest at the bedside.C. They join in when necessary.D. They perform another surgery.34. Some people are against using robots in surgery probably because_________.A. they can be out of controlB. they will take shorter timeC. they may be expensive to useD. they are likely to cause great pain35. What can we infer from the text?A. Dr. Robot can take the place of surgeons.B. Dr. Robot will be improved.C. Dr. Robot has been tested with human trials.D. Dr. Robot can free doctors’ hands in the operation.第二节(共5小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。
