Unit 2 Poems一、阅读理解(共18小题;每小题2分,满分36分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

ASuppose you’re in a rush, felling tired, not paying attention to your screen, and you send an email that could get you in trouble.Realisation will probably set in seconds after you’ve clicked “send”. You freeze in horrors and burn with shame. What to do? Here are four common email accidents, and how to recover.Clicking “send” too soonDon’t waste your time trying to find out if the receivers has read it yet. Write another email as swiftly as you can and send it with a brief title explaining that this is the correct version and the previous version should be ignored.Writing the wrong timeThe sooner you notice, the better. Respond quickly and briefly, apologizing for your mistake. Keep the tone measured: don’t handle it too lightly, as people can be offended, especially if your error suggests a misunderstanding of their culture(i.e. incorrect ordering of Chinese names).Clicking “reply all” unintentionallyYou accidentally reveal(透露)to entire company what menu choices you would prefer at the staff Christmas dinner, or what holiday you’d like to take. In this instance, the best solution is to send a quick, light-hearted apology to explain your awkwardness. But it can quickly rise to something worse, when everyone starts hitting “reply all”to join in a long and unpleasant conversation. In this instance, step away from your keyboard to allow everyone to calm down.Sending an offensive message to its subjectThe most awkward email mistake is usually committed in anger. You write an unkind message about someone, intending to send it to a friend, but accidentally send it to the person you’re discussing. In that case, ask to speak in person as soon aspossible and say sorry. Explain your frustrations calmly and sensibly—see it as an opportunity toclear up any difficulties you may have with this person.1. After realising an email accident, you are likely to feel _______.A. curiousB. tiredC. awfulD. funny2. If you have written the wrong name in an email, it is best to ________.A. apologise in a serious mannerB. tell the receiver to ignore the errorC. learn to write the name correctlyD. send a short notice to everyone3. What should you do when an unpleasant conversation is started by your “reply all” email?A. Try offering other choices.B. Avoid further involvement.C. Meet other staff members.D. Make a light-hearted apology.4. How should you deal with the problem caused by an offensive email?A. By promising not to offend the receiver again.B. By seeking support from the receiver’s friends.C. By asking the receiver to control his anger.D. By talking to the receiver face to face.5. What is the passage mainly about?A. Defining email errors.B. Reducing email mistakes.C. Handling email accidents.D. Improving email writing.BFifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured(捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized(使……永存). In some ways, she lives in my house.Perhaps we all live in each others’ spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass.6. What happened when the author was about to take a photo?A. Her camera stopped working.B. A woman blocked her view.C. Someone asked her to leave.D. A friend approached from behind.7. According to the author, the woman was probably_______.A. enjoying herselfB. losing her patienceC. waiting for the sunsetD. thinking about her past8. In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive?A. The rich color of the landscape.B. The perfect positioning of the camera.C. The woman’s existence in the photo.D. The soft sunlight that summer day.9. The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand ________.A. the need to be close to natureB. the importance of private spaceC. the joy of the vacation in ItalyD. the shared passion for beauty10. The passage can be seen as the author’s reflections upon _______.A. a particular life experienceB. the pleasure of travelingC. the art of photographyD. a lost friendshipCMeasles(麻疹), which once killed 450 children each year and disabled even more, was nearly wiped out in the United States 14 years ago by the universal use of the MMR vaccine(疫苗). But the disease is making a comeback, caused by a growing anti-vaccine movement and misinformation that is spreading quickly. Already this year, 115 measles cases have been reported in the USA, compared with 189 for all of last year. The numbers might sound small, but they are the leading edge of a dangerous trend. When vaccination rates are very high, as they still are in the nation as a whole, everyone is protected. This is called “herd immunity”, which protects the people who get hurt easily, including those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons, babies too young to get vaccinated and people on whom the vaccine doesn’t work. But herd immunity works only when nearly the whole herd joins in. When some refuse vaccination and seek a free ride, immunity breaks down and everyone is in even biggerdanger. That’s exactly what is happening in small neighborhoods around the country from Orange County, California, where 22 measles cases were reported this month, to Brooklyn, N.Y., where a 17-year-old caused an outbreak last year. The resistance to vaccine has continued for decades, and it is driven by a real but very small risk. Those who refuse to take that risk selfishly make others suffer.Making things worse are state laws that make it too easy to opt out(决定不参加) of what are supposed to be required vaccines for all children entering kindergarten. Seventeen states allow parents to get an exemption(豁免), sometimes just by signing a paper saying they personally object to a vaccine. Now, several states are moving to tighten laws by adding new regulations for opting out. But no one does enough to limit exemptions.Parents ought to be able to opt out only for limited medical or religious reasons. But personal opinions? Not good enough. Everyone enjoys the life-saving benefits vaccines provide, but they’ll exist only as long as everyone shares in the risks. 11.The first two paragraphs suggest that ____________.A.a small number of measles cases can start a dangerous trendB.the outbreak of measles attracts the public attentionC.anti-vaccine movement has its medical reasonsD.information about measles spreads quickly12.Herd immunity works well when ____________.A.exemptions are allowedB.several vaccines are used togetherC.the whole neighborhood is involved inD.new regulations are added to the state laws13.What is the main reason for the comeback of measles?A.The overuse of vaccine.B.The lack of medical care.C.The features of measles itself.D.The vaccine opt-outs of some people.14.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To introduce the idea of exemption.B.To discuss methods to cure measles.C.To stress the importance of vaccination.D.To appeal for equal rights in medical treatment.DHollywood’s theory that machines with evil(邪恶) minds will drive armies of killer robots is just silly. The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial intelligence(AI) may become extremely good at achieving something other than what we really want. In 1960 a well-known mathematician Norbert Wiener, who founded the field of cybernetics(控制论), put it this way: “If we use, to achieve our purposes, a mechanical agency with whose operation we cannot effectively interfere(干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpose put into the machine is the purpose which we really desire.”A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually associate with living things: a wish to preserve its own existence. For the machine, this quality is not in-born, nor is it something introduced by humans; it is a logical consequence of the simple fact that the machine cannot achieve its original purpose if it is dead. So if we send out a robot with the single instruction of fetching coffee, it will have a strong desire to secure success by disabling its own off switch or even killing anyone who might interfere with its task. If we are not careful, then, we could face a kind of global chess match against very determined, super intelligent machines whose objectives conflict with our own, with the real world as the chessboard. The possibility of entering into and losing such a match should concentrate the minds of computer scientists. Some researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind of firewall, using them to answer difficult questions but never allowing them to affect the real world. Unfortunately, that plan seems unlikely to work: we have yet to invent a firewall that is secure against ordinary humans, let alone super intelligent machines.Solving the safety problem well enough to move forward in AI seems to be possible but not easy. There are probably decades in which to plan for the arrival of super intelligent machines. But the problem should not be dismissed out of hand, as it has been by some AI researchers. Some argue that humans and machines can coexist as long as they work in teams—yet that is not possible unless machines share the goals of humans. Others say we can just “switch them off”as if super intelligent machines are too stupid to think of that possibility. Still others think that super intelligent AI will never happen. On September 11, 1933, famous physicist Ernest Rutherford stated, with confidence, “Anyone who expects a source of power in the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.”However, on September 12, 1933, physicist Leo Szilard invented the neutron-induced(中子诱导) nuclear chain reaction.15. Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that artificial intelligence may .A. run out of human controlB. satisfy human’s real d esiresC. command armies of killer robotsD. work faster than a mathematician16.Machines with specific purposes are associated with living things partly becausethey might be able to .A. prevent themselves from being destroyedB achieve their original goals independentlyC. do anything successfully with given ordersD. beat humans in international chess matches17.According to some researchers, we can use firewalls to .A. help super intelligent machines work betterB. be secure against evil human beingsC. keep machines from being harmedD. avoid robots’ affecting the world18.What does the author think of the safety problem of super intelligent machines?A. It will disappear with the development of AI.B. It will get worse with human interference.C. It will be solved but with difficulty.D. It will stay for a decade.二、七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Psychologists say that if children go through a disturbing event before the age of ten, they are three times as likely to suffer psychological problems as so teenagers. After a disaster children may become easily upset, shy, aggressive, or afraid of wind, rain, noises, or darkness. They may have trouble letting go of their parents and resist going to school or daycare. Some children may even feel guilty thinking that they somehow caused the disaster through their bad behavior. Because of such common reactions, parents and others should begin as soon after the event as possible helping these children. Some suggestions include talking to the children about what happened, letting the children express their own feelings, spending extra time with them doing activities together and reassuring them that you love them and won't leave them. For some children expressing themselves through drawing pictures or writing can be useful. Do everything possible to help children get back to a normal routine; however, don't be afraid to "spoil" these children for a while after the disaster. Let them have extra privileges and more attention than usual. Encourage the children to grieve after a loss. It should be OK for them to cry. Caring families and friends can do much to heal children victims of disasters.46. This passage is mainly about_______.A. how to help traumatized children to get overB. the bad effects disasters bring to childrenC. the psychological problems children before ten are likely to sufferD. the importance of caring families47. According to the passage, a child who has just experienced a devastating disaster may become______.A. more matureB. less dependentC. willing to helpD. ready to attack48. Which is NOT advisable when dealing with the traumatized children?A. Allowing them freedom for some time.B. Asking them to hold their feelings.C. Encouraging them to show their grief.D. Talking them into taking care of others.B篇The English policeman has several nicknames but the most frequently used are “copper” and “bobby”. The first name comes from the verb to “cop”, meaning to “take” or “capture”, and the second comes from the first name of Sir Rober t Peel, the nineteenth-century politician, who was the founder of the police force as we know it today. An early nickname for the policeman was “peeler”, but this one has died out.Whatever we may call them, the general opinion about the police seems to be a good one except, of course, among the criminal part of the community where the police are given more bad nicknames which came from America, such as “fuzz” or “pig”. Visitors to England seem, nearly always, to be very impressed by the English police. It has, in fact, become a standing joke that the visitor to Britain, when asked for his views of the country, will always say, “I think your policemen are wonderful.”Well, the British bobby may not always be wonderful but he is usually a very friendly and helpful sort of character. A music-hall song of some years ago was called, “If You Want To Know The Time, Ask A Policeman”. Nowadays, most people own watches but they still seem to find plenty of other questions to ask the policemen. In London, the policemen spend so much of their time directing visitors about the city that onewonders how they ever find time to do anything else! Two things are noticeable to the stranger, when he sees an English policeman for the first time. The first is that he does not carry a gun and the second is that he wears a very special type of helmet(头盔). His helmet, together with his height, enables an English policeman to be seen from a long distance, a fact that is not without its usefulness. From time to time it is suggested that the policeman should be given a gun and that his helmet should be taken from him, but both these suggestions are not accepted by the majority of the public and the police themselves.49.The nickname that is not used now is ___________.A.pig B.peelerC.fuzz D.bobby50.Which of the following statements is true?A.There are fewer criminals in America than in Britain.B.The English police usually leave a deep impression on visitors.C.The British bobby is friendly but not helpful.D.The English police enjoy having guns.51.If you see an English policeman for the first time, you will probably notice at once that ___________.A.he often tells people timeB.he is usually trying to tell others the timeC.he has a helmet on his headD.he wears special clothes52.In London, what do the policemen often do during their work-time nowadays? A.Direct anyone in the city B.Tell others the timeC.NothingD.Show visitors the right way in the city 53.Visitors praise the English police because ___________. A.they are armed with modern equipmentB.they wear special helmetsC.they are often given thanks by peopleD.they are polite and helpful1-5 ADDDA 6-10.CAADC11-15.DDCBB16-20BAACA 21-25 ACAAA26—45 DBACD ABCDB ACDBA CDABC46-53 ADB BBCDD。

ANo poem should ever be discussed or “analysed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student.Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting the tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on films, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analysing” it, if there isn’t time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry.Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “heightening (提升) of life”.It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”.It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.1.To have a better understanding of a poem, one should .A.discuss it with othersB.analyse it by oneselfC.copy it down in a notebookD.practise reading it aloud2.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?A.Extending your life.B.Saving your life.C.Criticizing life.D.Heightening life.3.The underline d phrase “make room” in the last paragraph could be best replaced by “”.A.build a roomB.provide equipmentC.leave a certain amount of timeD.set aside enough spaceBOne early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. My interest was aroused only by the fact that theword “Poems” appeared in big, hot pink letters.“Is it good?” I asked her.“Yeah,” she answered. “There’s one I really like and you’ll like it, too.” I leaned forward.“‘Patty Poem’,” she read the title. Who is Patty? I wondered. The poem began:She never puts her toys away,Just leaves them scattered(散乱的) where they lay…The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:When she grows and gathers poise(稳重),I’ll miss her harum-scarum(莽撞的) noise,And look in vain(徒劳地) for scattered toys. And I’ll be sad.A terrible sorrow washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.“It’s you, honey,” my mother said sadly. To my mother, the poem revealed a parent’s affection when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the “she” in the poem was a horror. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible that I burst out crying.“What’s wrong?” m y mother asked.“Oh mama,” I cried. “I don’t want to grow up ever!”She smiled. “Honey, it’s okay. You’re not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I’ll still love you, okay?”“Okay.” I was still weeping. My panic had gone. But I could not help thinkin g about that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple that I could plainly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now fascinated by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.I have since fallen in love with other poems, but “Patty Poem” remains my poem. After all, “Patty Poem” gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.4.Why was the writer attracted by the book Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again?A. Actually, much of the information is unimportant, disposable and it distracts(分心) us from more meaningful pursuits.Worse still, when we spend lots of time consuming information from our social media streams,we may find it hard to concentrate on what we’re doing and we have a tendency to forget what we have consumed anyway.A new study from Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology has found that too much social media exposure actually reduces your ability to process information and depletes your short-term working memory. Our working memory plays a critical role in our capacity to filter information and remember what is valuable but it is not a limitless resource.Erik Fransén,a professor in computer science at KTH and the leader of this new study on social media overload, says this can explain why our capacity for processing information begins to fail when we attempt to stuff more information in the working memory. In fact, when you try to process the information like the speech or video, you are going to need partly the same system of working memory,so you are reducing your own working memory capacity. And when you try to store many things in your working memory, you get less good at processing information. It is the periods of downtime of your brain—preferably disconnected from the distractions of your computer or smartphone—that are needed for memory consolidation and transferring important information to your exposure to new information.Besides, you can empty your mind of thoughts quickly to relax completely,go for a short walk or spend a few minutes listening to music. This will help you improve your capacity to process information and increase your productivity.8.What can we learn about social media overload from Paragraph 1?A.It distracts our attention.B.It is beneficial to us.C.It brings us whatever we want.D.It keeps us informed of everything.9.Why does your capacity for processing information begin to fail sometimes?A.Much of the information is unimportant.B.You don’t make the most of your brain.C.You’re less good at processing information.D.Your working memory is a limited resource.10.What does the underlined word “downtime” in the last paragraph proba bly mean?A.Support.B.Relaxation.C.Increase.D.Loss.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

A★★☆☆☆Joanna Cole is the author of a wealth of children’s books on various subjects. Cole’s fertile imagination has provided beginning readers with jo kes and puzzles, humorous tales of the Clown-Around family, and books about science. The winner of countless awards, Cole follows her own widespread interests to write. She is credited with introducing the interesting world of science to young readers thro ugh her book series such as the hugely popular “Magic School Bus” books, which inspired its own television program. A careful researcher, Cole is praised for her scientific accuracy, but her books gain most of their effectiveness from her humor and easily understood explanations of difficult technical subjects.Cole first discovered the pleasure of writing when she was in grade school. “I discovered in the fifth grade what I liked to do: write reports and stories, make them interesting and draw pictures to go along with the words. Science was my favorite. Our teacher, Miss Bair, would ask us to read a science book everyweek. And each week, she would choose one student to do an experiment and report on it to the class. I would have done an experiment every week if she had let me. Grade school was much more influential than my later education. Maybe that’s why as an adult I ended up writing books for children.”After graduating from the City College of New York, Cole pursued (追求) her interest in books. After some graduate education courses, she spent a year as a librarian in a Brooklyn elementary school. Cole then became an editor at Scholastic. It was during her first job at the elementary school that she was inspired by an article about cockroaches (蟑螂) in The Wall Street Journal. Realizing that this was a subject she had never read about in school, Cole decided to write about it herself. The first publisher rejected the idea, but Cole had more luck when she sent her book to the publishing house of William Morrow, where Editor Connie C. Epstein helped her improve her skills in science writing. Beginning with that book, Cole has continued to pen both nonfiction and fiction for younger readers. In 1980, after ten years’ editing children’s books, she became a full-time writer.21. These programs help meet the needs of staff from all levels and practices within the firm.As you also know, I founded and lead our campus recruitment (招聘) program —“Sunflower Management Trainee Program”, which is widely recognized in many universities.Needless to say, I very much enjoy my present job. Why? One obvious reason is that it’s just two lines long. Th e poem, which can be understood as “A man sees a bunch of faces in the subway and thinks they look like flowers on a tree branch,” is an exercise in shortness. Pound wrote it after having a spiritual experience in a Paris metro (subway) station. In 1916, the US poet originally thought he could best describe his vision in a painting. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a painter. So he wrote a thirty-line poem, which he didn’t like. He dropped the long version in the waste bin. Six months later, he wrote a shor ter poem, but didn’t like that one either. Finally, a full year after the experience, he had been reading short Japanese poems called haikus, and he figured he would try this style. The result, which was published in 1913, is one of the most famous and influential works in modern poetry. This poem is one of the monuments (纪念物) of the 20th-century artistic movement known as “Imagism”. Basically, Pound and his friends thought that images (意象) weren’t just decoration: they were the highest form of speec h. By finding the right image, the poet can express the true, spiritual reality of a thing, which is more important than using a bunch of adjectives to describe its physical appearance. Thus, “In a Station of the Metro” is a poem that consists of one image expressed with absolute (绝对的) exactness and nothing else.To the imagists, the best way to describe an experience is not to use more and more words; the best way is to find exactly the right words. Have you ever told a beloved one that “words can’t express” how much you love them? Well, Pound would say that you’re just being lazy. In his view, words can express anything, even if it takes an entire year to find the right ones.28. In the short poem, Ezra Pound _____.A. tells us one of his painful experiencesB. compares the passengers’ faces to flowersC. describes a man walking among the crowdD. shows a wet, black tree branch in a metro station29. According to the text, “In a Station of the Metro” was _____.A. based on one of Pound’s p aintingsB. first discovered in a waste binC. influenced by haikusD. completed in 191630. Pound and his friends _____.A. stressed the importance of using adjectivesB. were good at describing abstract imagesC. decorated their poems with picturesD. used images to express their ideas31. Pound would probably think one’s hard efforts to find a single right word was_____.A. a bit ridiculousB. very worryingC. rather surprisingD. really worthwhileD★★★★☆“A serious attack on the fairy tale as children’s literature (文学) comes from those who don’t wish children to be frightened,” writes . Lewis in an essay. Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. First, they mean that we mustn’t do anything likely to make children frightened. Secondly, they want to keep out of their minds the fact that they are born into a world of death, violence, pain, and adventure. . Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second. He comments that “since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. By limiting your child to blameless stories of child life in which nothing at all alarming ever happens, you would fail to drive away the terrors, but would succeed in driving away all that can make them brave.”I love the story about St. George. It may be hard to find, but make an effort to make your children familiar with St. George and the Dragon by Margaret Hodges to see the best of this tale. It is a successful adaptation (改写本) from Spenser’s Faierie Queen. It begins with “In the days when monsters and giants and fairy folk lived in England, a noble knight was riding across the plain ...” It’s a keeper, if you can find one to buy.Bruno Bettelheim, a well-known child psychologist, also comments that fairy tales provide children with an invaluable education. He believes that all children have a rich supply of personal fantasies filled with fears and anxieties and that fairy tales comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.A good fantasy suggests rather than tells possible answers to life.I believe that reading fantasy literature quickens the ability to transfer (转移) ideas from tales to reality. It’s what good literature does —it makes life larger.32. . Lewis may probably agree that _____.A. children shouldn’t be exposed to death or violenceB. children should be brave and have rich imaginationC. children shouldn’t be allowed to read frightening storiesD. children should read fairy tales to learn about the real world33. What do we know about St. George and the Dragon?A. It is worth keeping.B. It was written by Spenser.C. It tells a beautiful love story.D. It is difficult for children to read.34. In the text, Bruno Bettelheim believes that fairy tales _____.A. show what happy life isB. are filled with fears and painC. cause children too much anxietyD. teach children how to solve problems35. What would be the best title for the text?A. What books children should readB. Whether people should read fairy talesC. How parents should choose books for kidsD. Why reading fantasy literature matters to children第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

At the same time,Wissam Raed,12,will be busy volunteering too.Thousands of miles away in Lebanon,Wissam plans to put on a play at an orphanage and bring potted plants to elderly people at a senior citizen center. Some other children like Nathan White,10,have personal reasons for volunteering.Nathan’s grandmother died of a heart attack. To help raise money for medical research,Nathan participated in Jump Rope for Heart. He and five other boys took turns jumping rope for two and half hours and collected more than US$1200 in donations for the American Heart Association.Millions of children around the globe lend a hand to their communities every year.Schools and parents also contribute to the rise in youth service. For example, many schools offer community service activities for students to join.Teachers either combine volunteer work with classroom lessons or make service work a requirement.Parents,on the other hand, encourage their kids to volunteer and do it with them.Community service is particularly important in this depression time.As the need for monetary support and other aid has increased, many charitable organizations have experienced a significant drop in donations.Camille and other children who volunteer thousands of hours annually can fill in some of the gaps.According to research, kids who start volunteering are twice as likely to continue doing good deeds when they are adults. So,grab a paintbrush,a trash bag,or whatever you need t o help your community. You’ll love how you feel after helping others.Even dirty work can be lots of fun,if it’s for a good cause.1.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?A.To recommend youth service programs to schools.B.To ask charity organizations to serve the community.C.To urge children to take part in volunteering activities.D.To propose alternatives for doing community services.2.What is the main idea of the 3rd paragraph?A.Community service is gaining popularity among children.B.Families and schools help to make community service popular.C.Children now depend more on their teachers than on their parents.D.Nathan White had a special reason to raise money for medical research.3.Why is community service important in a time of depression?A.It raises money for school activities.B.It teaches children to take care of the sick.C.It gives charity organizations some needed help.4.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Community service can help prevent juvenile delinquency(青少年犯罪).B.Children will probably leave school and work as volunteers.C.Organizing sports events for the school is a kind of community service.D.Children who do volunteer work are more likely to grow up to be caring adults.答案高中英语人教版选修6Unit2单元检测Ⅰ.单项填空1.Strangely the story__________is popular__________the young.A.made up;with B.made up;toC.made up of;with D.made up of;to[解析]the story 和make up 构成被动关系,故用made up 作the story 的定语。
