Howard, who holds a bachelor’s degree in arts and biology with an environmental science concentration from Kenyon College in Ohio, is the supervisor (主管) for Project Puffin, a seabird restoration project. She and a small crew (工作人员) of volunteers monitor and protect the seabirds during the summer breeding (繁殖) season. The puffin with a colorful beak (喙) is often referred to as a “sea parrot”. They were hunted more than 150 years ago for food and feathers and disappeared from Seal Island, once home to the largest puffin habitat in Maine. Dr. Steve Kress, founder of Project Puffin, reintroduced the puffin to the island 40 years ago. From mid-May to mid-August, crew live in tents that are on top of 8-foot-wide wooden platforms, overlooking a rocky beach. “You get really close to people really fast because you’re spending all your time with them,” Howard said. The crew brings only what they can carry on their backs when they travel to the island: clothes, books, and food. There’s no refrigeration on the island, and with the exception of two solar-po wered lights, there’s no electricity either. Food and fresh water are delivered every 10 days by a local. The only real structure on the island is the Seal Island cabin. It offers more protection than the tents and is where most of the research and data entry are done. It’s also a safe place for the crew to cook and stay warm. For Howard, the best part of a day spent on the island is getting to play with the birds. “You see a baby chick, and you can’t help but smile,” Howard said. “It’s a completely differ ent style of life from the average person, but I just love the work, and I love waking up and getting excited about what I’m going to do.”24.What does Howard do on Seal Island ?A. She protects puffins from hunting.B. She helps Dr. Kress with his research.C. She helps puffins with their productivity.D. She studies for an environmental science degree.25.What does the underlined word “people” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. The hunters.B. The locals.C. The puffins.D. The volunteers.26.How are the working conditions on Seal Island?A. Poor.B. Safe.C. Flexible.D. Satisfying.27.What would be the best title of the text?A. Do what you likeB. Rare seabirds on Seal IslandC. Living simply to help save puffinsD. Reintroducing puffins to Seal IslandCNone of humankind’s battles has proved more enduring—or less successful—than the war on mosquitoes.Around the world each year, millions of people die of diseases spread by the insect. It’s a familiar list of stubborn plagues(瘟疫)—with some frightening recent additions. The mosquito-borne chikungunya virus has spread to parts of Africa, Europe, Asia, and as of 2013, the Americas. Its effects, while painful, pale in comparison with those of the Zika virus, which is spreading fast through both North and South America, and leaving severely damaged babies in its wake. We have drained(排空) polluted pools, warned of the dangers of standing water, and sprayed a river of chemicals to kill mosquitoes. We have put up bed nets and window screens; we have educated and warned. And yet, we’re losing this fight. The mosquito remains the most dangerous non-human animal on Earth and many scientists fear it may become even more widespread and harmful with the rise in global temperatures and international travel. Our next weapon of choice is DNA. Scientists are working to change the mosquitoes’ genes. New gene-editing techniques, described in this month’s cover story, make it possible to change the mosquito’s genes so it can’t spread the malaria parasite And yet another would change mosquitoes’ genes to prevent the birth of females—the ones that bite—so the diseases will stop spreading and, in time, the insect will die out. Some may see these techniques as a revolutionary advance against disease that can be passes from one person to another; others, as a worrying case of scientists playing God. Like many breakthroughs, this one raises profound deep questions. No matter how harmful a wild species is, can we afford to risk the consequences of changing its genetic code? Or can we afford not to, as malaria alone kills, on average, one child every two minutes in Africa? We invite you to read our cover story with these questions in mind.28.What may encourage the spread of mosquitoes?A. Global warming.B. Use of chemicals.C. The decrease of pools.D. The risk of some diseases.29.How do the new techniques work?A. They can edit a new genetic code.B. They will remove the poison of mosquitoes.C. They can stop female mosquitoes giving birth.D. They can make mosquitoes die out immediately.30.In what tone does the author write the last paragraph?A. Pride.B. Regret.C. Concern.D. Confidence.31.What is the text mainly about?A. Mysterious DNA.B. An extinct species.C. A new war on mosquitoes.D. Mosquitoes around the world.D“The Reading Mother” is an old poem, and I’m not sure when I first heard it. But my favorite line comes to mind whenever I see a mom reading to her child: “Richer than I you will never be-- I had a mother who read to me.” Certainly, by that measure, I’m a wealthy person, as are my children.Decades ago, educators cited (引证) reading as the most fundamental skill children acquire, and they promoted the idea that reading aloud to children is critically important. Early childhood teachers can quickly spot the students who are read to daily, as they are already on their way to becoming good future readers. And now pediatricians (儿科医生) are also speaking of the importance of reading to children particularly in the first three years of their lives. In a new policy announcement, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is urging its physician members to tell parents that it’s critical to read, speak and sing to children at the very beginning of their young lives, because that’s how they acquire vocabulary and other important skills that may determine later school success.Doctors might also talk to parents about how regular reading is essential to physical development. Existing links among brain cells are strengthened. New cells are formed. Reading, as it turns out, is brain food! Maybe it’s even fair to say that no child is completely healthy if he or she has not held a book or heard a story. In my experience, many parents and grandparents even the wealthy and welleducated are surprised to hear the research and learn that it’s never too soon to read to babies. The AAP and others point out that lowincome children are of particular concern. Studies show that more affluent (富裕的) children hear millions more words spoken, read, or sung than do children from low income homes. This “word gap” gives low income children a clear academic disadvantage. which may be apparent as early as 18 months. One easy way to close that word gap is to expose babies to books.32.What makes children rich according to the mentioned old poem?A. Owing tons of books.B. Studying hard at school.C. Listening to their moms read.D. Appreciating poems at an early age.33.What do doctors ask parents to do nowadays?A. Teach their kids to speak in public.B. Read to their kids are as early as possible.C. Help their kids to perform well at school.D. Encourage their kids to learn various skills.34.We can infer from Paragraph 4 that reading helps children .A. improve brain functionB. build strong relationshipsC. form healthy living habitsD. earn more money in future35.Which can cause the “word gap” according to the AAP?A. Poor family background.B. Ill-educated grandparents.C. Wealthy but busy parents.D. An unhappy home environment.

A challenge lay ahead of me, someone who could hardly boil water: cooking the Easter Sunday dinner. What if I made everyone sick? It could truly be our family’s last super meal.Making the holid ay meal was my brother’s job, not mine. I could never fill his shoes. Peter had died in September at the age of 45 from a heart attack, but he’d been a natural in the kitchen all his life. He planned every course in detail, from the crescent rolls to the Dutch apple pie.My family was lost without him, and we went out to dinner for Thanksgiving and ordered pizza for Christmas. By the time Easter rolled around, though, I couldn’t bear the idea of another holiday surrounded by takeout (外卖食品) boxes. Peter would have hated that. To him, there was nothing more important than a meal made with love. So I convinced Mom that we should cook Easter dinner together. But we were terrible cooks.I had been thinking what to cook for Easter dinner. I’d bitten off more than I could chew. No one could do this half as well as Peter.I stepped into the family room. Mom was still at church, but her newspaper was opened on the coffee table, to the sports section, as usual. She was a huge Notre Dame women’s basketball fan, and the featured story was about the forward Devereaux Peters. I read the headline and nearly dropped my grocery bags, Filling Peters’ Shoes. That afternoon, cooking in the kitchen, I didn’t feel so alone. Mom and I pulled together and th e Easter feast was not that bad. The ham may have been a little dry, but it was all made with love—just like Peter would have wanted.4. A growing body of evidence supports an association between optimism and healthy aging, but it is unclear how optimism impacts health. When it comes to dealing with day-to-day stressors, such as household chores or arguments with others, a new study has found that being more or less optimistic did not make a difference in how older men emotionally reacted to or recovered from these stressors. However, optimism appeared to promote emotional well-being by limiting how often older men experience stressful situations or changing the way they interpret situations as stressful.“This study tests one possible explanation, assessing if more optimistic people handle daily stress more constructively and therefore enjoy better emotional well-being,” said correspon ding author Lewina Lee. PhD, clinical psychologist at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder at the VA Boston Healthcare System and assistant professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. The researchers followed 233 older men who first finished an optimism questionnaire; 14 years later, they reported daily stressors along with positive and negative moods on eight consecutive (连续不断的) evenings up to three times over an eight-year span. The researchers found more optimistic men reported not only lower negative mood but also more positive mood. They also reported having fewer stressors which was unrelated to their higher positive mood but explained their lower levels of negative mood. While studies have sustained the idea of optimism as a resource that may promote good health and longevity, we know very little about the underlying mechanisms (机制). “Stress, on the other hand. is known to have a negative impact on our health. By looking at whether optimistic people handle day-to-day stressors differently, our findings add to knowledge about how optimism may promote good health as people age,” says Lee.8. What may be affected by optimism according to the first paragraph?A.People’s emotional well-being. B.Older men’s ability to react.C.The way people treat daily stress. D.The way that optimism will be researched.9. How is the third paragraph developed?A.By making comparisons. B.By analyzing possible results.C.By presenting different opinions. D.By showing the course and result.10. What does the underlined word “sustained” in the last paragraph mean?A.Changed. B.Supported. C.Expected. D.Repeated.11. Where is the text probably taken from?A.A course plan. B.A travel brochure.C.A health magazine. D.A news report.Marks & Spencer (M&S) is planning to remove “best before” labels (标签) from 300 varieties of fruit and vegetables in its stores to cut food waste. The change will rely on customers using their judgment to determine whether goods are still fine to eat.The measure, to be rolled out this week, will affect 85% of the supermarket's fresh produce offering. “Best before” labels differ from “use by” dates, with the former often merely a measure of aesthetes (美学), while the latter tending to indicate a safety risk if ignored. “Best before” labels were meant to help consumers, but instead were blamed (for creating mountains of waste from perfectly eatable food).Tesco. the UK's largest supermarket chain, had already announced the end of best before dates on its own-brand fruit and vegetables as far back as 2018, while the German supermarket LidI also says it does not include best before information to reduce food waste. Now M&S is doing the same, with the aim to halve (减半) food waste from its products by 2030 compared with 2018. Achieving those targets would put it in line with the UK's commitment to meet the United Nations' goal of halving food waste by 2030 compared with 2007.Reducing food waste is a vital part of dealing with carbon emissions associated with farming and food distribution (分配). WRAP, a food waste charity, estimates that as much 45% of global greenhouse gas emissions can only be dealt with by changing the way we make and consume products and food. It said that removing dates on fresh fruit and vegetables can save the equal of 7 million shopping baskets of food a year.Catherine David, a director at WRAP, said, “We’re thrilled to see this move from M&S. which will reduce food waste and help solve the climate crisis. We urge more supermarkets to get ahead on food waste by cutting date labels from fresh produce, allowing people to use their own judgment.”12. What does Marks &Spencer intend to do?A.Maintain the safety of their products.B.Sell its own-brand fruit and vegetables.C.Ask customers to pick out eatable produce.D.Remove “use by” labels from its fresh produce.13. Which statement is right according to the passage?A.The problem of climate crisis can ho solved by reducing food waste.B.Marks &Spencer has stopped using the “Best before” labels this week.C.“Best before” labels are responsible for the huge waste of food sold in supermarkets.D.Consumers should decide whether the food is safe to eat by checking “Best before” labels.14. What does Catherine David call on more supermarkets to do?A.Meet government regulations. B.Improve food safety standards.C.Increase sales of fresh produce. D.Get rid of date labels on fresh produce.15. What is the main idea of the text?A.M&S's new move to reduce food waste.B.Tesco follows M&S’s lead on food labels.C.M&S calls for a fight against climate crisis.D.Effective methods to protect the environment.3D-Printed ViolinsWhile professional violinists often have instruments that cost between $2000 and $10, 000, it is possible to have one that costs millions depending on how they were and who made them. 16 This can make it hard for many to access the instrument, especially for beginners and music classrooms. However, the good news for them is that they will meet with low-cost and durable (耐用的) 3D-printed violins thanks to The Acoustical Society of America’s AVIVA Young Artists Program. The team’s inspiration roots in multiple places. Their goals were to explore the new world of sounds created by using new materials, to use the new technology of other fields, and to make music education accessible through the printing of more durable instruments. 17 The method of distribution has yet to be decided — it could involve shipping fully printed violins, sharing the 3D-printing files with makers, or a combination of both.18 The neck and fingerboard are printed in smooth ABS plastic to provide a comfortable grasp for the musicians, while the violin’s body is made of a plastic polymer substance, much like a typical acoustic (原声的) violin. The outcome is a violin that sounds darker and softer than traditionally built violins. 19“The next step is to lower the costs of production for making such instruments more widely available, especially in the field of education,” said Mary-Elizabeth Brown, director of the AVIVA Young Artists Program. Violins are not the only instruments that are produced through 3D-printing technology. 20 Effective results have been obtained from many of them. When most of us get a text message on our cell phone from an unknown person, we usually say “Sorry, wrong number!” and move on.
