An85-year-old building,the Lagena Primary School
has been lifted off the ground——in its entirety——and relo
cated using new technology called the野walking machine冶.
In the city's latest effort to preserve historic structures,en
gineers attached nearly200mobile supports under the five-
storey building, according to Lan Wuji, chief technical su
pervisor of the project. The supports act like robotic legs.
They're split into two groups which alternately rise up and
down, imitating the human walking.Attached sensors help control how the building moves forward, Lan said, whose company Shanghai Evolution Shift developed the new technology in2018.野It's like giving the building crutches so it can stand up and then walk,冶he said.Constructed in1935,the school was moved in order to make space for a new commercial and office complex(建筑群),which will be completed by2023.

Workers had to first dig around the building to install the 198 mobile supports in the spaces un derneath, Lan explained. After the pillars of the building were cut short, the robotic 野legs 冶 were then ex tended upward, lifting the building before moving forward.
Over the course of18 d ays, the building was rotated 21 degrees and moved 62 meters (203 feet)
away to its new location. The relocation was completed on October 15 last year with the old school
building set to become a center for heritage protection and cultural education. The project marked the
first time this 野walking machine 冶 method has been used in Shanghai to relocate a historical building.
There are a few ways to go about moving a building: It can slide down a set of rails, or be pulled
along by vehicles, for instance. But the Lagena Primary School, which weighs 7,600 tons, created a new challenge —it's T-shaped, whereas previously r elocated structures were square or rectangular (长
方形的).The irregular shape meant that traditional methods of pulling or sliding may not have
worked . Experts and technicians met to discuss possibilities and test a number of different technolo -
gies before deciding on the 野walking machine 冶. Lan said that he couldn't share the exact cost of the
project, and that relocation costs will differ case by case. 野But in general, it's cheaper than demolishing and then rebuilding something in a new location. 冶

As we all know, forests benefit human beings a lot in many ways. However,it seems that many people haven't realize it.They have been cutting down trees in forests for wood and farmland. The areas of forests become smaller and smaller. Where the forests disappear, dust storms will occur constantly. The weather will get hotter than before and many animals will disappear, too.Human beings will be punished for their forest-destroying activities.
Therefore,it is high time that measures should be taken to protect forests. To begin with, people who destroy forests should be punished by the local government.Besides, planting more trees is a good idea.Bear in mind that joint efforts make a great difference!
