If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two persons, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motorcar all day.

(20%) ( A ) More and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities around the world. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventure--- those who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity, which may only lost a few minutes or even seconds. I would consider Bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot-air balloon) 200 meters above the ground with a rope tied to your ankles(脚踝). You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried Bungee jumping. Other activities that are as risky as Bungee jumping including jumping from tall building and diving (潜水) into the sea from a high place. Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists (心理学者)suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people ’s lives were often in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not be easily cured, and life was a continuous battle for them. Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in rather safe conditions; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as Bungee jumping. 1. is the new, exciting sport that people are looking for nowadays.A Bungee jumpingB Climbing high mountainsC Sailing across oceansD Traveling into unknown place2. The word “risky ” in the passage means .A helpfulB dangerousC interestingD new3.People probably take part in dangerous sports nowadays because .A they have a lot of free timeB they can go to hospital if injuredC they need excitement in lifeD they no longer need to hunt for food4.The passage mainly tells us .A people are fond of new sportsB now why more people do dangerous sportsC people don’t like modern lifeD Bungee jumping is really dangerous5. Some people must take their cars. This is because no trains or buses go where they have to go. Maybe other people could go to work with them. Then there wouldn''t be so many cars on the road. What will our lives be like in times to come? Maybe we won''t need cars so much. Maybe more of us will work at home. Maybe trains and buses will go to more places. Then more people will be in them. This will mean more room on our streets and roads. It would be nice if people walk more. They might like to step along a street or road. They would not get far very fast. But they would have the time to look around them. Who knows? A friend sends you favorite song to cheer you up. One day, a record company might forward new records and music videos to your phone. The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phone --- all-purpose gadgets ( ⼩玩意⼉) that blend phone, personal stereo, video player and Internet browser into one. Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register their numbers. The fans could pass music or songs along to friends--- a kind of musical trading card. Unlike Internet tracks, mobile downloads would be easy for recordcompanies to control, said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of Yourmobile, based in Santa Monica, California."If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged,"said Simon."It's like going through a toll gate ( 收费站). There's more possibility for copyright control than there is on the Internet."Massachusetts-based Converse is offering a service in Portugal and theNetherlands that lets people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. Her most popular novel, “Pride and Prejudice”, described Elizabeth Bennett and her search for romance through a world of balls, dinners and endless social rules. Here the following helps you enter into Austen’s high society.1. Coming outGirls were treated as children until 18, when they “came out”. Parents took their daughters from their country homes to London. There, these young ladies from noble families were presented to the queen during the biggest ball of the season at Buckingham Palace. This was their official entrance into society. Afterwards, they attended balls, dinners and parties in London. The girls met the important people in London society and, especially, searched for a suitable husband.2. DancesFamilies of unmarried young women often hosted dances at their homes and invited others of the same social class—particularly single young men. At the dance, each eligible girl had a dance card. If a young man wanted to dance with a girl, he approached her and asked to sign her card. A proper girl did not dance with one man for more than three songs in a row.3. Paying callsDuring Au sten’s time, there were strict rules about how, when, and why to visit friends and neighbors. To express condolences over the death of a friend’s family member or offer congratulations for an award, a visitor was required to wait a week after the event before visiting. Meanwhile, a party guest must visit and thank the hostess within the week after attending a party. Guests would be considered rude if they waited for more than two weeks to visit. Visits were supposed to last only 20 minutes to half an hour.36. Which of the following indicates girls’ official entrance into society?________A) They were 18.B) Their parents took them from their country homes to London.C) They found a suitable husband.D) In the biggest ball of the season at Buckingham Palace, they were presented to the queen.37. What does the author probably mean by “eligible” in the third paragraph?________A) Suited. B) Qualified. C) Suitable. D) Appropriate.38. As a rule, when should a party guest visit and thank the hostess after attending aparty?________A) Within the week after the event. B) More than two weeks.C) Within two weeks. D) Any time that he or she likes.39. In the writer’s opinion, ________.A) the British people were friendlyB) the British social rules in high society were strictC) the British parents were strict with their daughtersD) the British girls were very practical40. What would be the most appropriate title for this passage?________A) Austen’s Time.B) The British People.C) Good Manners in High Society. D) Strict Social Rules.Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage.Halloween (October 31) is a holiday widely celebrated with different names in many countries. Although it originated as a religious holiday, it has lost its religious connections in the United States. It is now celebrated largely as a children’s day, and many American children look forward to it for days and weeks beforehand. The orange pumpkin is harvested at this time of year and is hollowed out, a funny face cut into it, and a candle placed inside as a decoration in the window. City folks, nowadays, sometimes use paper pumpkins for decorations. Some years ago, the holiday was celebrated by dressing up in strange and frightening costumes and playing tricks on one’s neighbors and friends, such as ringing doorbells, throwing bits of corn on the window panes, and in other ways making minor disturbances. More recently, children come to the door to have friends and neighbors admire their costumes and guess who they are behind the false faces and receive treats of candies, fruits or cookies. They say, “Trick or Treat”, which means “I will play a trick on you if you do not give me a treat.”This practice has even more recently developed into a significant international activity. Instead of candies, the children collect money for UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund). This special collection of money by children for needy children throughout the world is known as “UNICEF Trick of Treat”. Although it has begun only recently, it results in several million dollars each year contributed to UNICEF. The collection box is orange, reminiscent of the pumpkin.41. In history, Halloween was once a ______ day.A) children’s B) national C) religious D) international42. Which of the following is mentioned about how children celebrated the holiday some yearsago?________A) Making up in peculiar and horrifying costumes.B) Playing jokes on neighbors or friends.C) Ringing door bells.D) All of the above.43. What kind of treats will children not receive on October 31?________A) Candies. B) Fruits. C) Cookies. D) Chocolates.44. Why do children collect money to celebrate the holiday?________A) They need pocket money.B) They can use the money to buy whatever they like.C) They can help those children who need money in the whole world.D) What they did in the past have bored them.45. From the passage, we know that ________.A) to some degree, Halloween has not been the American own holiday and its influence will be greaterand greaterB) Halloween will become the most important holiday for the American peopleC) more and more parents will take part in the celebration of this holidayD) it will be celebrated by all the people around the worldQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A., guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S., no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, which would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.46. The author’s main purpose of the passage is to ______.A) emphasize the importance of time in American social customsB) tell us time and tide waits for no manC) teach us how to get on well with the American peopleD) introduce the personal relationship among the American people47. Generally speaking, when is it proper for you to call someone?________A) Very early in the morning. B) After 11 p.m.C) Sleeping hours. D) Neither very early in the morning nor after 11 p.m. 48. According to the passage, the author of the article may agree that ________.A) it is appropriate to send your invitation cards three or four days before a dinner party date in AmericaB) it may be appropriate to send your invitation to your guests three or four days before a dinner party date in some culturesC) time means the same for all the people around the worldD) people can communicate each other very well if they live in the same culture49. If you live in America, you should pay attention to ______.A) the time of your making a phone callB) the time of your sending your invitation cardsC) the time of your meeting with someoneD) all of the above50. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centrePassage OneWhen we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do. For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn't sure how it will all work out, but at least h e tries. And, if he can’t make things work out right, he doesn't feel ashamed that he failed; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.If you look at children, you'll see great difference between what we call "bright" children and "not-bright" children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life - he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But, the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.61. According to this passage, intelligence is __________.A. the ability to study wellB. the ability to do well in schoolC. the ability to deal with lifeD. the ability to get high scores on some tests62. In a new situation, an intelligent person__________.A. knows more about what might happen to himB. is sure of the result he will getC. concentrates on what to do about the situationD. cares more about himself63. If an intelligent person failed, he would__________. A. try not to feel ashamed B. learn from his experiencesC. try to regret as much as possibleD. make sure what result he would get64. Bright children and not-bright children__________.A. are two different types of childrenB. are different mainly in their degree of clevernessC. have difference only in their way of thinkingD. have different knowledge about the world65. The author of this passage will probably continue to talk about __________.A. how to determine what intelligence isB. how education should be foundC. how to solve practical problemsD. how an unintelligent person should be taughtPassage TwoIf women are mercilessly exploited year, they have only themselves to blame.Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores.Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it ,only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe(衣柜)packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck lines are lowered or raised, and so on.No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability(耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t at some time in his life smile at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes. When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.66. Designers and big stores always make money_________________A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industryB. because they are capable of predicting new fashionsC. by constantly changing the fashions in women’s clothingD. because they attach great importance to quality in women’s clothing67. To the writer, the fact that women alter their old-fashioned dresses is seenas______.A. a waste of moneyB. a waste of timeC. an expression of tasteD. an expression of creativity68. The writer would be less critical if fashion designers placed more stress on the___ _ of clothing.A. costB. appearanceC. comfortD. suitability69. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. New fashions in clothing are created for the commercial exploitation of womenB. The constant changes in women’s clothing reflect their strength of characterC. The fashion industry make an important contribution to societyD. Fashion designs should not be encouraged since they are only welcomed bywomen.70. By saying “the conclusions to be drawn are obvious” (lines 1-2, Para.4) thewriter means that ________.A. women’s inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed atB. women are better able to put up with discomfortC. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designersD. men are more stable and reliable in characterPassage ThreeDo you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, bu t you can learn to make you life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. A void the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.71.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably__________.A. he is a lazy personB. he refuses to follow his own energy cycleC. he is not sure when his energy is lowD. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening72.Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?A. Unawareness of energy cycles.B. Familiar monologuesC. A change in a family member’s energy cycleD. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members73.If one wants to work more efficiently at his how point in the morning, he should_________A. change his energy cycleB. overcome his lazinessC. get up earlier than usualD. go to bed earlier74.You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will___________A. help to keep your energy for the day’s workB. help you to control your temper early in the dayC. enable you to concentrate on your routine workD. keep your energy cycle under control all day75.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A. Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one’s energyB. Dr. Kletman explains why people reach their peaks at different hours of day.C. Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycleD. Each passageis followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. As a place of learn ing, Oxford’s beginnings are equally distant. Legend has it that Alfred laid its foundations at the end of the ninth century. Certainly by the 12th century scholars were teaching in the town, Latin being the lingua franca (通用语). Before long their fame spre ad to the Continent, particularly to the Sorbonne College in Paris, then Europe’s greatest centre of learning. A group of English scholars left the French capital in 1167 to settle in Oxford and the place became an attraction for students and teachers from all over Britain. Forty-seven years later the university received its first charter (许可证) granted by the Pope regulating its administration. Today Oxford is a large, crowded city, but the ancient university buildings in the centre --- colleges, libraries, museums and administrative blocks connected by narrow lanes --- have remained largely untouched. While most old universities have modernized radically to accommodate their growing populations, Oxford has managed to expand while still preserving its traditional academic structure. The 36 existing colleges, varying from the older houses such as Merton, founded in the 13th century, to the newest, Green, founded in 1979, are independent, self-governing institutions operating under the umbrella of the University of Oxford. Still more foundations are prepared to become full colleges.26. By the 12th century, ____.A) Oxford had become the center of learning in EuropeB) scholars were teaching Latin in OxfordC) French was the prevailing language in OxfordD) many British teachers and students went to Oxford27. Oxford was recognized by the church in ____.A) the 9th century B) 1167 C) the 10th century D) 121428. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A) Many old buildings in Oxford have been removed.B) Oxford has grown into a large city.C) Oxford boasts a long history.D) Many people are now living in Oxford.29. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.A) Oxford is left behind by other universitiesB) Oxford is backward nowadays in academyC) many universities have gone too far in modernizationD) the modernization in Oxford is far from radical30. Which description about today’s Oxford is correct?A) Latin is the lingua franca.B) Many new buildings are under construction.C) The number of colleges is on the rise.D) All the colleges in Oxford were established in 12th century.Passage TwoQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Sometimes we like things loose, unstructured, in blue jeans. Sometimes we like things precise, brilliant, and charming. This is the heart of ballet. By all logical assumptions, it should never have survived the French Revolution. An art form developed out of the formality of court life, it boasts an almost mathematical vocabulary of steps and gestures. Ballet in the past few hundred years has both evolved and remained still. Any city worth its charter supports a ballet company and at least one annualproduction of “The Nutcracker.” Productions of nineteenth-century classics have been a staple (主要内容) of “high” culture to a s mall but devoted audience. But the art form has witnessed some radical experimentation, as well. One of the half-dozen geniuses of the twentieth century, George Balanchine, blew the dust off traditional ballet. He made generous use of composers such as Bruckner, and Stravinsky. Ballet, Balanchine realized, like all great ballet enthusiasts, that the true soul of ballet is music. What gives the dancing its most heartfelt pleasures are the dancers, their athleticism evidence of what perfection the human body is capable of, their grace of an elegant, physical representation of the music itself. The intellectual thrill of ballet lies in watching the playing out of patterns, the arresting power of a solo, the corps of 50 dancers moving on tiptoes in extreme unity. When all the elements work together, we leave the theater with our postures considerably improved.31. According to the passage, ballet was developed ____.A) in the imperial court C) during the French RevolutionB) for the masses D) after the French Revolution32. It can be inferred from the passage that ballet’s steps and gestures are ____.A) designed to be precise C) easy to understandB) casual and emotional D) difficult to follow33. Stravinsky was most probably a ____.A) classic composer C) radical composerB) contemporary composer D) generous composer34. Balanchine will approve of the opinion that ____.A) ballet should stick to the traditionB) the traditional ballet should be thrown awayC) music is the most important element in balletD) only genius can understand modern ballet35. A soft-spoken fellow from Kansas -a guy who was turned down by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) because his maths scores were too low and who never had much formal physics training -received the Nobel Prize in physics. This is slightly ironical, because Jack St Clair Kilby is not a physicist. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was willing to overlook that minor detail, though, because Kilby did, after all, come up with the most valuable invention of the past half-century: the microchip. Jack Kilby’s idea sparked the information age. The tiny silicon chip at the heart of all digital devices has arguably become the most important industrial commodity since crude oil. Without the chip, there could be no personal computers or mobile phones, no Internet or Play-Stations. The semiconductor integrated circuit has changed the world as fundamentally as did the light bulb, the telephone and the horseless carriage. But somehow the man who made the microchip has never achieved the recognition that Edison, Bell and Ford enjoyed. Thanks to the Nobel Prize, at age 78, Jack Kilby finally received the attention he deserved.36. Kilby is a(n) ____.A) American B) Frenchman C) Swedish D) Englishman37.
In our society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did, to find better jobs, to make more money and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, that is another cause of the gap between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so muchgas.
The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.

It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can fail to become successful when the state system is apparently so thorough. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less rich homes reach university or do well in other ways.Unfortunately, we now have plenty of evidence that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence of all males aged between 18 and 20. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left schools at 15.It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5,000 children from birth to 21 years old indicated that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but for more boys than girls stay in education after 16.It is clear from this and much other evidence that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes—money, social respectability, and interesting jobs, which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social circumstances. Their parents often need the extra money another wage-earner can bring in; they do not value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, “It is up to you.”31.What’s the purpose of raising the school leaving ag e?A.To provide steps up the ladder of success.B.To provide children with the same chances in society.C.To give children the right to a better school.D.To give children a more thorough state system.32.In people’s eyes, the education system__________________.A. provides enough chances to success for children.B. misses no children who are really clever.C. only provides chances for children from rich families.D. does not give equal chances to all bright children.33.Working class children are felt to be at a disadvantage because______________ .A. many of the clever ones leave school early.B. fewer go to university than ever before.C. more than half leaves school when they are 16.D. fewer boys than girls stay at school after 16.34.Many children leave school early because__________________.A.their social circumstances make them unhappyB. they have to work to help support their familyC. their school is a dull and unhappy placeD. their parents don’t allow them to make their own decisions35. This article shows that equal opportunity in education__________________.A. is a thing of the pastB. has not yet been achievedC. is there for those who merit itD. has greatly improved our societyPassage 2There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals. Short-range goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less or two weeks, or possible months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, out long-term goals cannot amount to very munch without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-range goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become discouraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-range goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action.36. Our long-term goals mean a lot__________________.A. if we complete our short-range goalsB. if we cannot reach solid short-term goalsC. if we write down the datesD. if we put forward some plans37.
