Hot stamp foil or transfer foil is a way of transferring an image from an inert carrier onto a variety of substrates to give a sharp detailed design. This transfer is normally achieved using a heat press and dye stamp, where the base coat acts as a hot melt adhesive and the top coat gives a high gloss finish. The majority of stamping foils employ polyester film as the base or carrier. This is because polyester is dimensionally stable over a wide temperature band. The first step is the application of a very thin layer of release coat (to ensure that subsequent layers transfer when required) followed by a lacquer (in the case of metallics) or a layer of pigments. The final coat, called a size coat, is a heat activated adhesive coat whose composition varies depending on the substrate that requires printing. The final process involves reeling the film up to 2 meters wide and 600 meters long and then, when required, precision slitting to meet the exact requirement of the customer. The normal press temperature is 110-130 degrees centigrade and pressure is up to 5 tonnes.
