2014年中国农业银行校园招聘考试英语专项深度练习——阅读理解(二)

2014年中国农业银行校园招聘考试英语专项深度练习(二)Pronouncing a language is a skill. Every normal person is expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce, and consequently never set about tackling it in the right way. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill—one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be acquired by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while recognizing the importance of a good accent, tend to neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch of study concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and should get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the moment to take second place.Apart from this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique. It is important that the teacher should be in possession of the necessary information. This can generally be obtained from books. It is possible to get from books some idea of the mechanics of speech, and of what we call general phonetic theory. It is also possible in this way to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students‘ pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted.26. What does the writer actually say about pronouncing foreign languages?A. Only a few people are really proficient.B. No one is really an expert in the skill.C. There aren’t many people who are even fairly good.D. There are even some people who are moderately proficient.27. The writer argues that going about the problem of pronunciation in the wrong way isA. an obvious cause of not grasping the problem correctlyB. a fundamental consequence of not speaking wellC. a consequence of not grasping the problem correctlyD. not an obvious cause of speaking poorly28. The best way of learning to speak a foreign language, he suggests, is by_______.A. picking it up naturally as a childB. learning from a native speakerC. not concentrating on pronunciation as suchD. undertaking systematic work29. The value the student puts on correct speech habits depends upon_______.A. how closely he attends to the matterB. whether it is English that is being taughtC. his teacher‘s approach to pronunciationD. the importance normally given to grammar and spelling30. How might the teacher find himself wasting lesson time?A. By spending lesson time on pronunciation.B. By making ill-informed comments upon pronunciation.C. By not using books on phonetics in the classroom.D. By not giving students a clear mental picture of the difference between sounds.答案:26. C 27. C 28. D 29. CAn industrial society, especially one as centralized and concentrated as that of Britain, is heavily dependant on certain essential services: for instance, electricity supply, water, rail and road transport, the harbors. The area of dependency has widened to include removing rubbish, hospital and ambulance services, and, as the economy develops, central computer and information services as well. If any of these services ceases to operate, the whole economic system is in danger. It is this interdependency of the economic system that makes the power of trade unions such an important issue. Single trade unions have the ability to cut off many economic blood supplies. This can happen more easily in Britain than in some other countries, in part because the labor force is highly organized. About 55 per cent of British workers belong to unions, compared to under a quarter in the United States. For historical reasons,Britain’s unions have tended to develop along trade and occupational lines, rather than on an industry-by-industry basis, which makes wage policy, democracy in industry and the improvement of procedures for fixing wage levels difficult to achieve. There are considerable strains and tensions in the trade union movement, some of them arising from their outdated and inefficient structure. Some unions have lost many members because of industrial changes. Others are involved in arguments about who should represent workers in new trades. Unions for skilled trades are separate from general unions, which means that different levels of wages for certain jobs are often a source of bad feeling between unions. In traditional trades which are being pushed out of existence by advancing technologies, unions can fight for their members‘ disappearing jobs to the point where the jobs of other union’s members are threatened or destroyed. The printing of newspapers both in the United States and in Britain has frequently been halted by the efforts of printers to hold on to their traditional highly-paid jobs.1. Why is the question of trade union power important in Britain?A. The economy is very much interdependent.B. Unions have been established a long time.C. There are more unions in Britain than elsewhere.D. There are many essential services.2. Because of their out-of-date organization some unions find it difficult to______.A. change as industries changeB. get new members to join themC. learn new technologiesD. bargain for high enough wages3. Disagreements arise between unions because some of themA. try to win over members of other unionsB. ignore agreementsC. protect their own members at the expense of othersD. take over other union‘s jobs4. It is difficult to improve the procedures for fixing wage levels because______.A. some industries have no unionsB. unions are not organized according to industriesC. only 55 per cent of workers belong to unionsD. some unions are too powerful5. Which of the following is NOT TRUE?A. There are strains and tensions in the trade union movement.B. Some unions have lost many members.C. Some unions exist in the outdated structure.D. A higher percentage of American workers belong to unions than that of British workers.答案:1. A 2. A 3. C 4. B 5. The __1__ of producing a new—for example—toothpaste would make 8 Op the decent price for it,so we will market it at £l. 20. It is not a bad toothpaste (not specially good either, but not bad), and as people like to try new things it will sell well to start with; but the __2__ of novelty soon fades, so sales will __3__ 。

严禁折叠答题卡!Part1:You’re busy filling out the application form for a position you really need. Let’s assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree. Isn’t it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma represents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University? More and more people are turning to utter deception like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, for personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university. Registrars at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of about one per week. Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then. If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are reluctant to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them "impostors(骗子)"; another refers to them as "special cases". One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made by "no such people". To avoid outright(彻底的)lies, some job-seekers claim that they "attending" means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that "being associated with" a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century—that’s when they began keeping records, anyhow. If you don’t want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a phony diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of nonexistent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from "Smoot State University". The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the "University of Purdue". As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper. The main idea of this passage is that ________ .[A] employers are checking more closely on applicants now[B] lying about college degrees has become a widespread problem[C] college degrees can now be purchased easily[D] employers are no longer interested in college degreesAccording to the passage, "special cases" refers to cases that ________.[A] students attend a school only part-time[B] students never attended a school they listed on their application[C] students purchase false degrees from commercial firms[D] students attended a famous schoolWe can infer from the passage that ________ .[A] performance is a better judge of ability than a college degree[B] experience is the best teacher[C] past work histories influence personnel officers more than degrees do[D] a degree from a famous school enables an applicant to gain advantage over others in job competitionThis passage implies that ________ .[A] buying a false degree is not moral[B] personnel officers only consider applicants from famous schools[C] most people lie on applications because they were dismissed from school[D] society should be greatly responsible for lying on applicationsThe word "phony" (Line 13, Para. 2) means ________ .[A] thorough [B] ultimate [C] false [D] decisivePart2:Material culture refers to what can be seen, held, felt, used—what a culture produces. Examining a culture’s tools and technology can tell us about the group’s history and way of life. Similarly, research into the material culture of music can help us to understand the music culture. The most vivid body of material culture in it, of course, is musical instruments. We cannot hear for ourselves the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when the phonograph was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about music cultures in the remote past and their development. Here we have two kinds of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art. Through the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on, we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a thousand years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe that resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchestra. Sheet music or printed music, too, is material culture. Scholars once defined folk music cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear rather than from print, but research shows mutual influence among oral and written sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America. Printed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they stimulate people to create new and different songs. Besides, the ability to read music notation has a far-reaching effect on music and, when it becomes widespread, on the music culture as a whole. One more important part of music’s material culture should be singled out: the influence of the electronic media—radio, record player, tape recorder, television, and videocassette, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the "information revolution", a twentieth-century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution was in the nineteenth. These electronic media are not just limited to modern nations; they have affected music cultures all over the globe.Research into the material culture of a nation is of great importance because ________ .[A] it helps produce new cultural tools and technology[B] it can reflect the development of the nation[C] it helps understand the nation’s past and present[D] it can demonstrate the nation’s civilization2. It can be learned from this passage that ________ .[A] the existence of the symphony was attributed to the spread of Near Eastern and Chinese music [B] Near Eastern music had an influence on the development of the instruments in the symphony orchestra[C] the development of the symphony shows the mutual influence of Eastern and Western music [D] the musical instruments in the symphony orchestra were developed on thebasis of Near Eastern music3.According to the author, music notation is important because ________ .[A] it has a great effect on the music culture as more and more people are able to read it[B] it tends to standardize folk songs when it is used by folk musicians[C] it is the printed version of standardized folk music[D] it encourages people to popularize printed versions of songs4 It can be concluded from the passage that the introduction of electronic media into the world of music ________ .[A] has brought about an information revolution[B] has speeded up the appearance of a new generation of computers[C] has given rise to new forms of music culture[D] has led to the transformation of traditional musical instruments5. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?[A] Musical instruments developed through the years will sooner or later be replaced by computers. [B] Music cannot be passed on to future generations unless it is recorded.[C] Folk songs cannot be spread far unless they are printed on music sheets.[D] The development of music culture is highly dependent on its material aspectPart3:Baekeland and Hartmann report that the “short sleepers”had been more or less average in their sleep needs until the men were in their teens. But at about age 15 or so, the men voluntarily began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work, and other activities. These men tended to view their nightly periods of unconsciousness as bothersome interruptions in their daily routines. In general, these “short sleeps”appeared ambitious, active, energetic, cheerful, conformist(不动摇) in their opinions, and very sure about their career choices. They often held several jobs at once, or workers full-or part-time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear “normal”or “acceptable”to their friends and associates. When asked to recall their dreams, the “short sleepers”did poorly. More than this, they seemed to prefer not remembering. In similar fashion, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was to deny that the problem existed, and then to keep busy in the hope that the trouble would go away. The sleep patterns of the “short sleepers”were similar to, but less extreme than, sleep patterns shown by many mental patients categorized as manic(疯人). The “long sleepers”were quite different indeed. Baekeland and Hartmann report that these young men had been lengthy sleeps since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quite concerned when they were occasionally deprived of their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to recall their dreams much better than did the “short sleepers.”Many of the “long sleepers”were shy, anxious, introverted (内向), inhibited (压抑), passive, mildly depressed, and unsure of themselves (particularly in social situations). Several openly states that sleep was an escape from their daily problems.According to the report,______.many short sleepers need less sleep by natureB) many short sleepers are obliged to reduce their nightly sleep time because they are busy with their workC) long sleepers sleep a longer period of time during the dayD) many long sleepers preserve their sleeping habit formed during their childhoodMany “short sleepers”are likely to hold the view that _____.A) sleep is a withdrawal from the realityB) sleep interferes with their sound judgementC) sleep is the least expensive item on their routine programD) sleep is the best way to deal with psychological troublesIt is stated in the third paragraph that short sleepers _____.are ideally vigorous even under the pressures of lifeB) often neglect the consequences of inadequate sleepC) do not know how to relax properlyD) are more unlikely to run into mental problemsWhen sometimes they cannot enjoy adequate sleep, the long sleepers might ____.appear disturbed B) become energetic C) feel dissatisfied D) be extremely depressedWhich of the following is Not included in the passage? If one sleeps inadequately, his performance suffers and his memory is weakenedB) The sleep patterns of short sleepers are exactly the sane as those shown by many mental patients C) Long and short sleepers differ in their attitudes towards sleepD) Short sleepers would be better off with more restPart4:Upon reaching an appropriate age (usually between 18 and 21 years), children are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest”and begin an independent life. After children leave home they often find social relationship and financial support outside the family. Parents do not arrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married, Romantic love is most often the basis for marriage in the United States; young adults meet their future spouses (配偶) through other friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions, Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices. In many families, parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves. A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another career. Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to assert their independence. A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father’s business because of a fear that he will lose his autonomy in his father’s workplace. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family Coexisting with such love in the American family are cultural values of self –reliance and independence. The writer discusses the marriage of young adults in order to show which of the following? They enjoy the freedom of choosing their spouses.B) They want to win the permission of their parents.C) They have a strong desire to become independent.D) They want to challenge the authority of their parents. Most young adults in the U.S. get married for the sake of ____.love B) financial concern C) their parents D) family backgroundBased on the passage, it can be assumed that ______.American young adults are likely to follow the suit of their parentsB) most American people never make major decisions for their childrenC) American young adults possess cultural values of independenceD) once a young person steps into his twenties, he will leave his home permanentlyA son is unwilling to work in his father’s business mainly because _____.he wishes to make full use of what he has learnt in schoolB) he wants to prove his independenceC) he wishes to do the opposite of what his parents approve ofD) he wants to show his love for his parentsThe subject matter of this selection is _____.A) family values B) marriage arrangements C) the pursuit of a career D) decision makingPart5:Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, jerky movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time ofr which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also vaies within any one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text. Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness. Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently. Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words. Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have nowbegun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous textThe time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except ________ . one’s familiarity with the textB. one’s purpose in readingC. the length of a group of wordsD. lighting and tirednessThe author may believe that reading ______.requires a reader to take in more words at each fixationB. requires a reader to see words more quicklyC. demands an deeply-participating mindD. demands more mind than eyes3 What does the author mean by saying “but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.”in the second parapraph? A. The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted.B. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve both the ability to see and to comprehend words.C. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve an efficient reading.D. The reading exercises mentioned has done a great job to improve one’s ability to see words.Which of the following is NOT true? The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time.B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training.C. The emphasis on the purely visual aspects is misleading.D.The eye training will help readers in reading a continuous text. The tune of the author in writing this article is ________A criticalB neutralC prssimisticD optimisticPart6:Our quarrel with efficiency is not that it gets things done, but that it is a thief of time when it leaves us no leisure to enjoy ourselves, and that it strains our nerves when we try to get things done perfectly. In building bridges, American engineers calculate so finely and exactly as to make the two ends come together within one-tenth of an inch. But when two Chinese begin to dig a tunnel from both sides of a mountain both come out on the other side. --The Chinese’s firm belief is that it doesn’t matter so long as a tunnel is dug through, and if we have two instead of one, why, we have a double track to boot. The pace of modern industrial life forbids this kind of glorious and magnificent idling. But, worse than that, it imposes upon us a different conception of time as measured by the clock and eventuallyturns the human being into a clock himself. (This sort of thing is bound to come to China, as is evident, for instance, in the case of a factory of twenty thousand worker. The luxurious prospect of twenty thousand workers coming in at their own sweet pleasure at all hours is, of course, somewhat terrifying.)Nevertheless, such efficiency is what makes life so hard and full of excitement. A man who has to be punctually at a certain place at five o’clock has the whole afternoon from one to five ruined for him already. Every American adult is arranging his time on the pattern of the schoolboy - three o’clock for this, five o’clock for that, six-thirty for change of dress, six-fifty for entering the taxi, and seven o’clock for arriving at the destination. It just makes life not worth living. The writer objects to efficiency mainly on the grounds that it ____.entitles us to too much leisure timeB) urges us to get things done punctuallyC) deprives us of leisure timeD) imposes on us a perfect concept of timeIn the eyes of the author, the introduction of industrial life gives rise to ____.the excitement of lifeB) magnificent idling of timeC) more emphasis on efficiencyD) terrifying schoolboyThe passage tells us ____.Chinese workers come to work when it is convenientB) all Americans are forced to be efficient against their willC) Chinese engineers are on better terms with the managementD) Americans ought not to work so hard for efficiencyThe author believes that relaxing the rule of punctuality in factories would lead to ____. great confusion B) increased production C) a hard and exciting life D) successful completion of a tunnelWhat is implied but NOT stated by the author is that ____.every American is arranging his time in the pattern of a schoolboyB) every American is reluctant to be efficientC) every one should have some time to spend as he pleasesD) being punctual is an undesirable habit which should not be formedPart7:Of the thousands of different kinds of animals that exist in the world man has learned to make friends with an enormous number. Some are pets, and offer him companionship; some give protection, and some do hard work which man cannot do for himself. Dogs, which serve man in all three capacities, are found in various breeds in all countries of the world. The Husky can live in the cold polar regions, and the Saluki is at home in the hottest parts of Central Africa. The inhabitants of certain countries are dependent for their very lives on the camel. In the West Indies the little donkey, strong and sure-footed, carrying heavyloads even in mountainous places, is a familiar sight. Trained and tamed for many generations, domestic animals are not accustomed to roaming(到处走动) in search of food and shelter. They look to their masters to provide for their needs, and as long as these are supplied, they are content to do what their masters require. All domestic animals need proper food. It must be suitable for them, sufficient in quantity, fresh and clean. Some people feed a pet dog or cat on odds and ends of table scraps, and then wonder why the animal seems listless(倦怠的) and dull. The quantity of food depends on the size of the animal and the amount of exercise it takes. Overfeeding is as bad as underfeeding. Containers for food and water must be washed regularly if the animal is to maintain good health. Even well cared for animals may sometimes fall ill. If this happens, the wise master seeks the best advice he can get. All sorts of medicines and treatments are available for sick animals, and in some countries organizations exist to provide them free or at a cheap price. Useful, friendly, hardworking animals deserve to have some time, money and attention spent on their health. What main idea does the author want to convey in the first paragraph? There exists thousands of species of animals in the world.B) Man came to establish a close relationship with a number of animals.C) In some regions a donkey seems to be a very useful beast.D) An animal will be useless unless domesticated. When an animal is underfed, it will probably ____.refuse to obey its masterB) immediately fall illC) require its master to offer some foodD) seek for food on its ownWhich of the following is NOT true of dogs according to the passage? They can act as friends, guards, and servants to man.B) They have great adaptation for the environment.C) There live a great variety of breeds of dogs on the globe.D) The Husky and the Saluki are the strongest breed ever known in the world. To keep a domestic animal physically fit, its owner is advised ____.not to hesitate to spend enormous amount of money on itB) to pay attention to its proper feedingC) not to allow it to take excessive amounts of exerciseD) to join some sort of pet-keeping organizationsWhich of the following would be best TITLE for this passage?A) Domesticated Animals - Man’s Best FriendB) Proper Diet - the Road to HealthC) The Advantages of Raising Domestic AnimalsD) Some Tips on Pet-keepingPart8:The greatest contribution to civilization in the century may well be the air-conditioning- and American leads just as amazing is the speed with which this situation came to be. Air-conditioning began to spread in industries as a production aid during World War Ⅱ. Today most Americans need to take air-conditioning for granted to homes, offices, factories, theatres, shops, studios, schools, hotels, and restaurants. But not everybody is aware that high cost and easy comfort are merely two of the effects of the vast cooling of American. In fact, air conditioning has substantially altered the country’s character and customs. Many of the byproducts are so conspicuous that they are scarcely noticed. To begin with, air-conditioning transformed the face of America by making possible those glassy, boxy, sealed-in skyscrapers. It has been indispensable, no less, to the functioning of sensitive advanced computers, whose high operating temperatures require that they be constantly cooled. . . It has, at will, forced families into retreating into families with closed doors and shut windows, reducing the interactions of neighborhood life. It is really surprising that the public’s often noted withdrawal into self-pursuit and privacy has coincided with the historic spread of air-conditioning. Though science has little studied how habitual air-conditioning affects mind and body, some medical experts suggest that, like other technical avoidance of natural variations in climate, air-conditioning may damage the human capacity to adapt to stress. If so, air-conditioning is only like many other greatly useful technical developments that liberate man from nature by increasing his productivity and power in some way - while indirectly weakening him in others.According to this selection, which of the following constitutes the unique character of U.S.? Its excessive use of air-conditioning.B) Its advanced computerized civilization.C) Its public’s retreating into self-pursuit.D) Its greatest contribution to human civilization.According to the author, the chief consequence brought about by the wide application of air-conditioning is ____.the loss of human capacity to adapt to changes in climateB) the reduction of social communications of neighborhood lifeC) the active life style of all its usersD) the decreased human production and powerThe tone of this selection reveals that air-conditioning ____.has little effect on its usersB) has more effect on body than on mindC) brings more benefits than damage to its usersD) does harm as well as good to its usersWho benefits the least from air-conditioning according to the author?Medical experts. B) Manufacturers. C) Factory laborers. D) Consumers.5. What is the author’s overall attitude towards air-conditioning?Neutral B) Objective C) Critical D) CompromisingPart9:Until the 1980s, the American homeless population comprised mainly older males. Today, homelessness strikes much younger part of society. In fact, a 25-city survey by the U. S. Conference of Mayors in 1987 found that families with children make up the fastest growing part of the homeless population. Many homeless children gather in inner cities; this transient(变化无常的) and frequently frightened student population creates additional problems —both legal and educational —for already overburdened urban school administrators and teachers. Estimates of the number of homeless Americans range from 350,000 to three million. Likewise, estimates of the number of homeless school children vary radically. A U.S. Department of Education report, based on state estimates, states that there are 220,000 homeless school-age children, about a third of whom do not attend school on a regular basis, But the National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that there are at least two times as many homeless children, and that less than half of them attend school regularly. One part of the homeless population that is particularly difficult to count consists of the “throwaway”youths who have been cast of their homes. The Elementary School Center in New York City estimates that there are 1.5 million of them, many of whom are not counted as children because they do not stay in family shelters and tend to live by themselves on the streets. Federal law, the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, includes a section that addresses the educational needs of homeless children. The educational provisions of the McKinney Act are based on the belief that all homeless children have the right to a free, appropriate education. It is implied in the first paragraph that ____.the writer himself is homeless, even in his eightiesB) many older homeless residents are going on strike in 25 citiesC) there is a serious shortage of academic facilitiesD) homeless children are denied the opportunity of receiving free educationThe National Coalition for the homeless believes that the number of homeless children is _____. A) 350,000 B) 1,500,000 C) 440,000 D) 110,000One part of the homeless population is difficult to estimate. The reason might well be ____. the homeless children are too young to be counted as childrenB) the homeless population is growing rapidlyC) the homeless children usually stay outside schoolD) some homeless children are deserted by their familiesThe McKinney Act is mentioned in this passage in order to show that ___.the educational problems of homeless children are being recognizedB) the estimates on homeless children are hard to determineC) the address of grade-school children should be locatedD) all homeless people are entitled to free educationThe passage mainly deals with ____.the legal problems of the homeless children。

Part I Reading ComprehensionDirections:There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Questions 1to 5are based on the following passage:More attention was paid to the quality of production in France at the time of Rene Coty.Charles Deschanel was then the financial minister. He stressed that workmanship and quality were more important than quantity for industrial production. It would be necessary to produce quality goods for the international market to compete with those produced in other countries. The French economy needed a larger share of the international market to balance its import and export trade.French industrial and agricultural production was still inadequate to meet the immediate needs of the people, let alone long-ranged developments.Essential imports had stretched the national credit to the breaking point.Rents were tightly controlled, but the extreme inflation affected general population most severely through the cost of food.Food costs took as much as 80 percent of theworkers'income.Wages,it is true, had risen.Extensive family allowances and benefits were paid by the state, and there was full-time and overtime employment.Taken together, these factors enabled the working class to exist but allowed them no sense of security. In this precarious(不稳定的)and discouraging situation, workmen were willing to work overseas for higher wages. The government was reluctant to let workers leave the country. It was feared this immigration of workers would deplete the labor force. The lack of qualified workers might hinder the improvement in the quality of industrial productsproduced.Qualified workers employed abroad would only increase the quantity of quality goods produced in foreign countries. Also the quantity of quality goods produced in France would not be able to increase as part of its qualified labor force moved to other countries.1.According to the passage, the French workers were ________ .A)better paid than the workers in any other European countriesB)able to save more money with the increase in their wagesC)anxious to work abroadD)often unable to find work in France2.Rene Coty and Charles Deschanel were both interested in ________.A)better quality in productionB)increasing quantity in production <C)having the government raise tariffs on foreign importsD)eliminating unions in France3.The French government was reluctant to let the workers leavethe country because ________ .A)it would enlarge the working forceB)it would hinder the improvement of quality in industrialproductionC)it would hinder the increase in quantity of exportsD)it would damage the imports4.Rents in France ________.A)were extremely highB)were extremely controlledC)took as much as 80percent of the workers'incomeD)had doubled in two years5.According to the passage, the French government ________.A)prohibited French to work abroadB)reduced taxes to fight inflationC)paid family allowances and benefitsD)prohibited the French workers to join labor unionsQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Food can be divided into two basic categories:real food and pleasure food.Real food is fuel for the body's needs, while pleasure food, which is high in fat and sugar,is primarily for taste satisfaction. The categories are pretty obvious.Broccoli is real food.Cookies are in the pleasure group. When you are hungry, you are faced with choices. If you aren't suffering from excessive hunger, you can be rational about them.Go to the refrigerator. What looks good?If you have chosen a real food, say,a turkey sandwich, you can be certain your body can use it for fuel.Eat it and enjoy. Two hours later you are hungry again.Back to the refrigerator. What looks good?Ice cream.Stop!Employ your will power just a little.Ice cream is not what your body needs.Does something else look good?Yes,a piece of toast with peanut butter and a glass of milk sound good too.Okay,go ahead, remembering that high-fat real foods should be eaten in moderation. One trick is to eliminate pleasure foods from your kitchen.Instead, keep a variety of high-quality foods available at all times. In short, buy lots of delicious real food, food you really like, and get rid of the junk. But what if you have ice cream on hand and nothing sounds good?Although you don't wantto eat pleasure foods whenever the urge strikes, there is a legitimate place for them in your diet.If you have analyzed your feelings and there are no other needs imitating hunger, eat the ice cream. You have not failed. On the contrary, you have accepted your naturalappetite, but not blindly.Surprisingly, when you know you can eat anything you want, and that you never have toput up with unsatisfied hunger again,it takes a lot of pressure off.You will begin to want to eat what your body needs, and your body will begin to need foods that will leadto slimness.6.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A)The author is against getting rid of pleasure food altogether.B)One can eat the high-fat real foods heartily since it is fuel for the body.C)Make sure to keep pleasure food such as ice cream in your diet.D)Of FoodD)How To Choose Food When You Are Hungry8.Whatcan you assume from the last paragraph?A)Being able to eat anything doesn't necessarily imply pleasure.B)Real foods may lead to slimness.C)Eat only what your body needs.D)Be sure to satisfy your hunger whenever it strikes you.9.What can broccoli be except ________ .A)ice creamB)cauliflowerC)a turkey sandwichD)a piece of toast10.Judging from the fourth paragraph, what does"junk"mean?A)Food like ice cream.B)Food you do not like.C)Pleasure foods.D)Low-quality foods.Questions 11to 15are based on the following passage:Cloning, manipulating a cell from an animal so that it grows into an exact copy of that animal,is the forbidden fruit of biotechnology. Some scientists were so sure it could not be donethat,in the 1970s,they discouraged moralists(伦理学家)from discussing its moral implications.Yet at the same time other scientists, secretly,in out-of-the-way labs, were getting ever closer to making clones. For ten years, scientists have been cloning sheep and cows from embryo(胚胎)cells. But so far Dolly is the only animal cloned from an adult cell, not from an embryo. She is living proof that scientists have solved one of the most challenging problemsof cell biology. The question now is how soon will scientists clone humans."Nature",the scientific journal that published the Dolly paper, commented,"Cloning humans from adults tissues is likely to be achievable any time from one to ten years from now."Most scientists agree there is no insurmountable obstacle in human cloning. But a human clone, even though it might resemble the individual from whom it was made, would differ dramatically in personality and character, intelligence and talents."You will never get 100 percent identity,"says psychologist Jerome Kagan of Harvard,"because of chance factors and because environments are never exactly the same."That, however,is small comfort to many people.Shortly after Dolly's birth announcement,President Clinton ordered a group of experts to come up with proposals for government action. With the cloning of humans within reach, whether it is to be banned or regulated is now on the nation's moral agenda(议事日程). Some regard the cloning of humans as inherently evil,a morally unjustifiable intrusion into human life. They measure the morality of any act by the intention behind it;still others are concerned primarily with consequences for society as well as for individuals. For the moment it seems that the latest achievement in the biotech field has provided everyone with food for thought.11.In what way is Dolly different from earlier clones?A)It is cloned from human embryo.B)It is cloned from a human cell.C)It is cloned from an adult cell.D)It is cloned from an adult embryo.12.What is the prospect, according to most scientists,of making clones from adult human tissues?A)Such clones will be exactly like the one from whom it was made.B)It would be possible within the decade.C)There still exist some technical problems.D)It is impossible to make such clones in one to ten years from now.13.Why did Clinton order a group of experts to make proposals for government action?A)He wants to quicken the pace of cloning research.B)The success of cloning involves serious moral evaluation problems.C)He wants to ban the human cloning research.D)He is worried about the funding of the further research.14."Food for thought"in the last paragraph means ________.A)worry for foodB)increased food to be expectedC)something worthy of considerationD)reasons for deep understanding15.The best title for the selection can be ________.A)BiotechnologicalSuccess And Its Possible ConsequencesB)Dolly Is Only The BeginningC)The Definition Of CloningD)Cloning Humans From Adults'TissuesQuestions 16to 20are based on the following passage:Failure is probably the most fatiguing experience a person ever has. There is nothing more exhausting than not succeeding, being blocked, not moving ahead. It is an evil circle.Failure breeds fatigue, and fatigue makes it harder to get to work, which adds to the fatigue We experience this tiredness in two main ways,as start-up fatigue and performance fatigue. In the former case,we keep putting off a task that we are forced to take up.Either because it is too tedious or because it is too difficult,we avoid it.And the longer we postpone it the more tired we feel.Such start-up fatigue is very real, even not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The remedy is obvious, though perhaps not easy to apply:willpower exercise. The moment I find myself turning away from a job, or putting it under a pile of things I have to do,I clear my desk of everything else and attach the objectionable item first. To prevent start-up fatigue, always treat the most difficult job first.Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Here we are willing to get started, but we can't seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear to be insurmountable and however hard we work,we fail again and again. The mounting experience of failure carries with it an ever-increasing burden of mental fatigue. In such a situation,I work as hard as I can, then let theunconscious take over.16.Which of the following can be called an evil circle?A)Success-zeal-success-zeal.B)Failure-tiredness-failure-tiredness.C)Failure-zeal-failure-tiredness.D)Success-exhaustion-success-exhaustion.17.According to the passage ,when keeping putting off a task,we can experience ________.A)tirednessB)performance fatigueC)start-up fatigueD)unconsciousness18.To overcome start-up fatigue ,we need ________ .A)toughnessB)preventionC)musclesD)strong willpower19.The word"insurmountable"in the last paragraph probably means ________ .A)that can not be solvedB)that can not be understoodC)that can not be imaginedD)that can not be objected20.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A)It is easier to overcome start-up fatigue.B)Performance fatigue occurs when the job we are willing to take gets blocked.C)One will finally succeed after experiencing the evil circle.D)Fatigue often accompanies fatigue.。

2014广东银行考试模拟题:中国建设银行招聘考试模拟试题英语部分(二)及答案解析

2014广东银行考试模拟题:中国建设银行招聘考试模拟试题英语部分(二)及答案解析Passage 2U.S. college students are increasingly burdened with credit card debt, according to a study released Tuesday, and the consequences can be serious--ranging from higher drop-out rates to future employment problems and even suicide.Based on hundreds of face-to-face interviews and surveys with students, sociologist Robert Manning of Georgetown University concluded both the number with credit card debt and their indebtedness had been "systematically underreported" in previous studies which failed to reflect the "survival strategies" many used to cope with their debts. These included the use of federal student loans to pay off credit cards, effectively shifting the debt, appeals to parents for loans, cutting back on course work to increase time at paid jobs, or even dropping out altogether to work full time. "Official drop out rates include growing numbers of students who are unable to cope with the stress of their debts and/or part time jobs for servicing their credit cards," the study said.Even then, debts can haunt students. "Student credit card debts are increasingly scrutinized during the recruitment process and may be an important factor in evaluating prospective. employee," it noted. And the stress can also manifest in far more tragic ways. Janne O'Donnell's 2g-year-old son, a junior at the University of Oklahoma, committed O'Donnell and Manning agreed students should bear some responsibility for reckless use of credit, but said credit card companies also had to be held accountable for making it so easy for them to get into debt. Manning said one of the most disturbing aspects of the student credit card issue was "the seduction of college and university administrators by the credit card industry." Card issuers were sponsoring school programs, funding activities and even entering into business partnerships with schools involving college-branded "affinity" cards, he said. "As a result, rather than protecting the economic and educational interests of their students, college administrators are playing an active and often disingenuous role in promoting the prominence of credit cards in collegiate life."1. Which is NOT one of the strategies American students may use to deal with their credit card debt?A) Use federal student loans.B) Seek part-time jobs to get money.C) Promote the prominence of credit cards.D) Ask parents to help them pay the debt.2. Which may NOT be the consequence of students' credit card debt?A) High drop-out rates.B) Enter into business partnerships with schools.C) Commit suicide.D) Future employment problems.3. Who should be least criticized for negative consequences of students' credit card debt according to the passage?A) Parents.B) Students themselves.C) College and university administrators.D) Credit card issuers.4. The main idea of this passage is ______.A) negative consequences of students' using credit cardB) college administrators are playing their proper roles in promoting credit cardsC) card issuers or college administrators promoted credit cardD) reasons for high drop-out rates in universities5. We can infer from the passage that ______.A) students should not have part-time jobsB) credit cards should not be usedC) if there is no credit card, college students may not commit suicideD) college students should learn to wisely manage their personal finances答案解析:Passage 21.【答案】C。

Part I Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A., B., C. and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:If the salinity of ocean water is analyzed, it is found to vary only slightly from place to place. Nevertheless, some of these small changes are important. There are three basic processes that cause a change in oceanic salinity. One of these is the subtraction of water from the ocean by means of evaporation—conversion of liquid water to water vapor. In this manner, the salinity is increased, since the salts stay behind. If this is carried to the extreme, of course, white crystals of salt would be left behind; this, by the way, is how much of the table salt we use is actually obtained. The opposite of evaporation is precipitation, such as rain, by which water is added to the ocean. Here the ocean is being diluted so that the salinity is decreased. This may occur in areas of high rainfall or in coastal regions where rivers flow into the ocean. Thus salinity may be increased by the subtraction of water by evaporation, or decreased by the addition of fresh water by precipitation or runoff.Normally, in tropical regions where the sun is very strong, the ocean salinity is somewhat higher than it is in other parts of the world where there is not as much evaporation. Similarly, in coastal regions where rivers dilute the sea, salinity is somewhat lower than in other oceanic areas.A third process by which salinity may be altered is associated with the formation and melting of sea ice. When seawater is frozen, the dissolved materials are left behind. In this manner, seawater directly beneath freshly formed sea ice has a higher salinity than it did before the ice appeared. Of course, when this ice melts, it well tend to decrease the salinity of the surrounding water. In the Weddell Sea, off Antarctica, the densest water in the oceans is formed as a result of this freezing process, which increases the salinity of cold water. This heavy water sinks and is found in the deeper portions of oceans of the world.1. What is the main topic of the passage?A. Where do we get our table salt?B. Oceanic salinity in tropical regionsC. Three basic processes that alter oceanic salinityD. Variations of salinity in different parts of the ocean2. According to the author, the oceanic salinity is usually lower in _____.A. tropical regionsB. coastal regionsC. places in which warm currents and cold currents meetD. the Antarctica3. All of the following are processes that decrease ocean salinity except _____.A. precipitationB. runoffC. meltingD. evaporation4. What does the word “subtraction" in the fourth line of the first paragraph mean?A. reductionB. influxC. transformationD. freezing5. Which of the following is NOT a result of the formation of ice in oceans?A. The surrounding water sinks.B. The water becomes denser.C. Water salinity decreases.D. Section I Use of English1、【答案】B concluded【解析】题干中,一系列的研究已经_____,事实上,正常体重的人的患病风险要高于超重的人。

2014年云南省农村信用社招聘考试专项英语复习题

2014年云南省农村信用社招聘考试专项英语复习题

PartI Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. In a few weeks, high school students face the prospect of taking the much-publicized new SAT Reasoning Test, which for the first time will require them to write a timed essay. Yet colleges continue to send confusing signals about whether students applying in the fall to attend college must take the new exam. Some schools, including Harvard, say they will accept scores from either the new test or the old SAT I, which was administered for the last time in January and did not contain a writing section. The University of Central Florida, for example, will require the new test, which will be given for the first time on March 12. Still others, such as the University of Virginia, strongly recommend that prospective applicants take the new test but under some circumstances also will accept the old SAT. A number of colleges are delaying a decision. The College Board, which administers the SAT, surveyed more than 1,900 four-year schools and has heard back from slightly more than 500. Of those, 81% say they will require the new test, including schools such as Harvard that are giving students a choice in what will be a year of transition. "Anything new goes through a special lens of evaluation," says Lee Stetson, admissions dean at the University of Pennsylvania, which judiciously will use results from the new writing section until officials have a chance to study the revised SAT's predictive validity.A number of admissions deans are skeptical that the new exam will be an improvement. Charles Deacon, dean of undergraduate admissions at Georgetown University, says adding the essay "will create more barriers to poor kids who are less well-prepared". The test was rushed to market because the University of California system, a major College Board customer, threatened to stop requiring the SAT, he says. The test "was developed and marketed for all the wrong reasons". Deacon, who says he has been "badgered" by the College Board to endorse the new exam, has refused to do so. Some schools, including Georgetown, Iowa's Grinnell College and Pennsylvania's Franklin and Marshall College, say that at least for now, they will not even look at scores from the writing section when making admission decisions. "We have adopted a wait-and-see attitude," says Dennis Trotter of Franklin and Marshall.College Board officials counter that based on extensive field tests, they are confident the test is as reliable a predictor of freshman-year performance as theold SAT. Moreover, they say, well-trained scorers, many of them high school English teachers, will grade the essays, which student have 25 minutes to write.Amidst all the confusion, what should students do? Admissions deans and school counselors say to be sure to check with each college for requirements.1. If a student took the SAT in October last year, he has to take another test if he applies for .A) University of Virginia B) Georgetown UniversityC) the University of Central Florida D) Harvard University2. What does the article tell us about Harvard University?A) It will only accept the new SAT this fall.B) It has not made a decision on whether to accept the old SAT this fall.C) It will require scores from the writing section this fall.D) It will ask all applicants to take the new test a year later.3. An important reason for negative attitudes towards the new writing examination is that .A) the examination will add to the difficulty for those students from financially underprivileged familiesB) the examination was marketed much too quickly without careful considerationC) the examination will cause short-term confusion and lead to no long-term benefitsD) the examination was a product of the College Board and various universities4. According to the author, what should students do at the moment?A) Students should make clear which test is acceptable.B) Students should contact the university for the arrangement of the test.C) Students should ask the College Board for the latest information about the program.D) Students should get prepared for the new examination in less that a year.5. What can we infer from the passage about the test?A) Students who have taken the old test are strongly advised not to take the new test.B) As compared with the old test, the new one requires the student to write an essay in a shorter period of time.C) The College Board has decided to invite university teachers to grade the essays.D) The College Board has appealed to many universities to support the new examination.Passage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.Would George W. Bush have been reelected president if the public understood how much responsibility his administration bears for allowing the 9/11 attacks to succeed? The answer is unknowable and, at this date, meaningless. Yet it was appalling to learn that the White House suppressed until after the election a report that exposes the administration as woefully incompetent if not criminally negligent. Belatedly declassified excerpts from the 9/11 commission report, which focus on the failure of the Federal Aviation Administration to heed multiple warnings that Al Qaeda (基地组织) terrorists were planning to hijack planes as suicide weapons, make clear that this tragedy could have been avoided. For the last three years, administration apologists have tried to make the FAA the scapegoat for the 9/11 attacks. But it is the president who ultimately is responsible for national security. The terrible fact is that the administration took none of the steps that would have put the protection of human life ahead of a diverse set of economic and political interests, which included not offending our friends the Saudis and not hurting the share prices of airline corporations. The warnings provided by intelligence agencies to the FAA were far clearer and more specific than suggested by Condoleezza Rice's testimony before the 9/11 commission when she reluctantly conceded the existence of a presidential briefing that warned of impending Al Qaeda attacks.Given this shocking record of indifference on the part of the administration, it is politically understandable that it tried to prevent the formation of the 9/11 commission in the first place, and then for five months prevented the declassification of key sections of the final report.Had the business-friendly administration put safety first, nearly 3,000 people might not have died that day. And had the president of the United States taken some time from his ranch vacation that August to order a nationwide airport alert, two bloody wars abroad probably would not have happened.Instead, an administration that resisted spending the tens of millions required to fortify airline security before 9/11 is nearing the $300-billion mark on Afghanistan and Iraq. And declassified documents have unmistakably said the latter had nothing to do with 9/11, while those countries that at least indirectly did have been let off the hook.Indeed, the 9/11 commission was not allowed to get near that story: The basic narrative on the tragedy derives from the interrogations of key detainees whom the 9/11 commissioners were not allowed to interview. Nor were they permitted to eventake testimony from the U.S. intelligence personnel who interrogated those prisoners. As a result, the public is simply incapable of making informed decisions on the most crucial decisions we face-starting with whom we elect as our commander in chief.6. According to the author, who should shoulder the major responsibility for allowing the 9/11 tragedy to happen?A) Saddam Hussein. B) FAA.C) George W. Bush. D) Condoleezza Rice.7. What does the word "declassify" (Line 3, Para. 2) most probably mean?A) To hide the important details of B) To report or represent in a untrue wayC) To form a large group D) To become no longer secret8. What do we learn from the passage about Afghanistan and Iraq?A) Al Qaeda terriorists had gained support from at least one of the governments.B) 9/11 was the chief reason for the Bush government to initiate both wars.C) The two wars had already cost the Americans tens of millions of dollars.D) These two countries should be held responsible for 9/11.9. What can we infer from the passage?A) The Federal Aviation Administration was not to blame in this tragedy.B) Consideration of economic interests had hindered life protection.C) The Bush government had paid such a high price for poor information collection.D) Some government officials had been bribed by Al Qaeda terrorists.10. What is the author's opinion towards President Bush?A) He had been intentionally misleading as to the reasons of initiating the two wars.B) He had been late in preventing the attacks because of a personal vocation.C) He had done everything to help the 9/11 commission do a better job.D) He will have probably failed to be reelected if the public had been well informed Passage ThreeQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.Polls can provide important guidance for politicians, but there are times when it is foolish and dangerous to rely on a temporarily misinformed public for a political compass. The current debate over Social Security provides one of the most compelling examples in modern history of the pitfalls of poll-driven political strategy. Yesterday two leading Democratic strategists publicly took their party to task for their"just say no" approach to President Bush's program. "To say there is no problem simply puts Democrats out of the conversation for the great majority of the country that want political leaders to secure this very important retirement program," theywarned, "Voters are looking for reform, change, and new ideas, but Democrats seem stuck in concrete."Stuck, indeed. To be more exact, they are holding their ground and refusing to surrender to a president who is once again manufacturing a "crisis" for a political purpose. And why should they do otherwise, when this strategy is clearly working? Let's start with the facts. According to President Bush, Social Security can pay all promised benefits for the next 37 years without any changes at all. Even if nothing were done by 2043, the program would still pay a higher real benefit than what people receive today. And even looking into the future of the 75-year planning period, the shortfall is less than what we fixed in the '50s, '60s, and '80s. In other words, Social Security is financially stronger today than it has been throughout most of its history. So this attack on Social Security has nothing to do with the solvency (偿付能力) of the program. Nonetheless last week, a Quinnipiac University poll found that respondents, by a 49 to 42 percent margin, believed that Social Security would not be able to pay them a benefit when they retire. But this is a ridiculous idea, based completely on misinformation. It is even more far fetched(牵强的) than the notion, which also commanded a majority before the invasion of Iraq, that Saddam Hussein was responsible for the massacre of 9/11.In the case of Social Security, there is no dispute about the facts. There are just a few cheap verbal and accounting tricks that have been used to convince the public that Social Security faces serious problems. These are easily refuted. The same Quinnipiac poll showed that 59 percent of Americans disapprove of the way the president is handling Social Security, with only 28 percent approving. It makes no political sense to pretend that this attack on our nation's most successful and popular government program is actually an attempt to insure its solvency. Even in politics, there are times when honesty is the best policy.11. What can we know about the Democrats, according to the author?A) They want to help secure the retirement program.B) They refuse to admit that the Social Security program has been successful.C) They are making efforts to solve the crisis of the Social Security program.D) They organize polls in order to gain political interests.12. The author raise the example of Saddam Hussein in order to show that .A) the invasion of Iraq represented the wills of common peopleB) no evidence had come up to prove the relationship between Saddam Hussein and the massacre of 9/11C) sometimes the public without proper information will draw foolish conclusionsD) it was wrong for the government to rely on the public for important political decisions13. According to the author, which of the following is correct?A) There is no point in worrying about the solvency of the Social Security program.B) The majority of the public will accept the Social Security program in the near future.C) Only the baby boomers should worry about the future days when they grow old.D) The Democrats attack the Social Security program in order to question its solvency.14. By saying "honesty is the best policy", the author seems to disapprove of .A) the Quinnipiac University who organized the pollB) the Bush administration who initiated the Social Security programC) the ill-informed public who worried about their futureD) those Democrats who wanted to gain political interests through this incident15. The best title for this passage should be.A) Time to Reconsider Social SecurityB) Let's be Honest about Social SecurityC) Social Security is an IllusionD) Embrace the Bright Future of Social SecurityPassage FourQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage."When more and more people are thrown out of work, unemployment results," Calvin Coolidge once observed. As the U. S. economy crumbles, Coolidge s silly maxim might appear to be as apt as ever: the number of unemployment insurance claims is rising, and overall joblessness is creeping upward. But in today's vast and complex labor market, things aren't always what they seem. More and more people are indeed losing their jobs but not necessarily because the economy appears to be in recession. And old-fashioned unemployment isn't the inevitable result of job loss. New work, at less pay, often is.Call it new-wave unemployment: structural changes in the economy are overlapping the business downturn, giving joblessness a grim new twist. Small wonder that the U. S. unemployment rate is rising. Now at 5.7 percent, it is widely expected to edge toward 7 percent by the end of next year. But statistics alone can't fully capture a complex reality. The unemployment rate has been held down by slow growth in the labor force-the number of people working or looking for work-since few people senseattractive job opportunities in a weak economy. In addition, many more people are losing their jobs than are actually ending up unemployed. Faced with hungry mouths to feed, thousands of women, for example, are taking two or more part-time positions or agreeing to shave the hours they work in service-sector jobs. For better and for worse, work in America clearly isn't what it used to be. Now unemployment isn't, either.Like sour old wine in new bottles, this downturn blends a little of the old and the new reflecting a decade's worth of change in the dynamic U. S. economy. Yet, in many respects the decline is following the classic pattern, with new layoffs concentrated among blue-collar workers in the most "cyclical" (循环的) industries, whose ups and downs track the economy most closely. As the downturn attracts attention on workers-ill fortunes, some analysts predict that political upheaval (动乱) may lie ahead. Real wages for the average U. S. worker peaked in 1973 and have been falling almost ever since. As a result, a growing group of downwardly mobile Americans could soon begin pressing policymakers to help produce better-paying jobs. Just how loud the outcry becomes will depend partly on the course of the recession. But in the long run, there's little doubt that the bleak outlook for jobs and joblessness is "politically, socially and psychologically dynamite (具有爆炸性的)".16. Why does the author refer to Coolidge's maxim as silly?A) More and more people are applying for unemployment insurance.B) Unemployment rate is not likely to rise quickly nowadays.C) Losing jobs doesn't necessarily lead to unemployment.D) Today's labor market is much too complicated than Coolidge's time.17. According to the passage, the unemployment rate has been kept under limits because .A) the number of the people in the work force slowly increasesB) very few people really lose their original jobsC) less and less people are out finding new jobsD) the government has taken strong measures to control the unemployment rate18. According to the passage, under the great pressure of life, many women .A) will do a part-time job along with the full-time jobB) would rather stay at home than apply for a part-time positionC) would be fired if they can not finish the job quicklyD) will agree to have their working hours shortened if required19. The present downturn is similar to traditional ones in that .A) we can never predict which way the economy will headB) the economic prospects have been unfavorable for 10 yearsC) the government has done relatively little to intervene the marketD) physical laborers are the chief victims of the economic decline20. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A) Blue-collar workers are given less and less wages in recent years.B) The unemployment problem may lead to serious social problems.C) The unemployment problem will probably become less serious in no time.D) The government will create more jobs with better pay in the near future. 参考答案:Part I Reading Comprehension1. opposite direction.Pay has al⁃ways been the biggest deterrent,as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop in salary when moving to a university job.For some industrial scientists, however, the attractions of a⁃cademia(学术界)outweigh any financial considerations.Helen Lee took a70%cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge. Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research questions. Some areas of inquiry have few prospects of a commercial return, and Lee̓s is one of them. The impact of a salary cut is probably less severe for a scientist in the early stages of a career.3——Guy Grant, now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics at the Uni⁃versity of Cambridge, spent two years working for a pharmaceutical(制药的)company before re⁃turning to university as a post-doctoral researcher. He took a30%salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual opportunities.Higher up the ladder, where a pay cut is usually more significant, the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the transition(转换)to a⁃cademia more attractive, according to Lee.Industrial scientists tend to receive training that aca⁃demics do not, such as how to build a multidisciplinary team, manage budgets and negotiate con⁃tracts. They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate, says Lee,perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development.“Only a small number of undergraduates will continue in an aca⁃demic career. So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an in⁃dustrial lab has far more potential in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow research project.”41.By“a one-way street”(Line1,Para.1),the author means.A.university researchers know little about the commercial worldB.there is little exchange between industry and academiaC.few industrial scientists would quit to work in a universityD.few university professors are willing to do industrial research42.The word“deterrent”(Line3,Para.1)most probably refers to something that.A.keeps someone from taking actionB.helps to move the trafficC.attracts people’s attentionD.brings someone a financial burden43.What was Helen Lee’s major consideration when she changed her job in the middle of her career?A.Flexible work hoursB.Her research interestsC.Her preference for the lifestyle on campusD.Prospects of academic accomplishments44.Guy Grant chose to work as a researcher at Cambridge in order to.A.do financially more rewarding workB.raise his status in the academic worldC.enrich his experience in medical researchD.exploit better intellectual opportunities45.What contribution can industrial scientists make when they come to teach in a university?A.Increase its graduates’competitiveness in the job marketB.Develop its students’potential in researchC.Help it to obtain financial support from industryD.Gear its research towards practical applications4——Passage2Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life.Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity(长寿)boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in1858by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers(鳏夫)were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers.Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two to a woman’s.The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate.Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart.Likewise,a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn’t smoke. There’s a flip side, however,as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse’s death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems.Even so,the odds favour marriage. In a30-year study of more than10,000people,Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of so⁃cial networks have similar effects. So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors,health-ser⁃vice provision, emotional support and other more physiological(生理的)mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life.People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to100.The ultimate social network is still being mapped out,but Christakis says:“People are interconnected, so their health is interconnected.”46.William Farr’s study and other studies show that.A.social life provides an effective cure for illnessB.being sociable helps improve one’s quality of lifeC.women benefit more than men from marriageD.marriage contributes a great deal to longevity47.Linda Waite’s studies support the idea that.A.older men should quit smoking to stay healthyB.marriage can help make up for ill healthC.the married are happier than the unmarriedD.unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life48.It can be inferred from the context that the“flip side”(Line5,Para.2)refers to.A.the disadvantages of being marriedB.the emotional problems arising from marriage5——C.the responsibility of taking care of one’s familyD.the consequence of a broken marriage49.What does the author say about social networks?A.They have effects similar to those of a marriage.B.They help develop people’s community spirit.C.They provide timely support for those in need.D.They help relieve people of their life’s burdens.50.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.It’s important that we develop a social network when young.B.To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.C.Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.D.We should share our social networks with each other.Passage3“I promise.”“I swear to you it’ll never happen again.”“I give you my word.”“Honestly. Believe me.”Sure,I trust. Why not?I teach English composition at a private College. With a certain excitement and intensity,I read my students’essays, hoping to find the person behind the pen.As each semester progresses, plagiarism appears. Not only is my intelligence insulted as one assumes I won’t detect a polished piece of prose from an otherwise⁃average writer, but I feel a sadness that a student has resorted to buying a paper from a peer.Writers have styles like fingerprints and after several assignments,I can match a student’s work with his or her name even if it’s missing from the upper left⁃hand corner. Why is learning less important than a higher grade⁃point average(GPA)?When we’re threat⁃ened or sick,we make conditional promises.“If you let me pass math I will....”“Lord,if you get me over this before the big homecoming game I’ll....”Once the situation is behind us,so are the promises.Human nature?Perhaps, but we do use that cliche to get us out of uncomfortable bargains. Divine interference during distress is asked;gratitude is unpaid. After all,few fulfill the contract,so why should anyone be the exception. Why not?Six years ago,I took a student before the dean.He had turned in an essay with the vocabulary and sentence structure of a PHD thesis.Up until that time, both his out⁃of⁃class and in⁃class work were borderline passing.I questioned the person regarding his essay and he swore it.I’d understand this copy would not have the time and attention an out⁃of⁃class paper is given, but he had already a finished piece so he understood what was asked. He sat one hour, then turned in part of a page of unskilled writ⁃ing and faulty logic.I confronted him with both essays.“I promise...,I’m not lying.I swear to you that I wrote the essay.I’m just nervous today.”The head of the English department agreed with my findings, and the meeting with the dean had the boy’s parents present. After an hour of discussion, touching on eight of the boy’s previous essays and his grade⁃point average, which indicated he was already on academic probation,the6——dean agreed that the student had plagiarized. His parents protested,“He’s only a child”and we instructors are wiser and should be compassionate.College people are not really children and most times would resent being labeled as such...Except in this uncomfortable circumstance.51.According to the author, students commit plagiarism mainly for.A.moneyB.degreeC.higher GPAD.reputation52.The sentence“Once the situation is behind us,so are the promises”implies that.A.students usually keep their promisesB.some students tend to break their promisesC.the promises are always behind the situationD.we cannot judge the situation in advance,as we do to the promises53.The phrase“borderline passing”(Para.3)probably means.A.fairly goodB.extremely poorC.above averageD.below average54.The boy’s parents thought their son should be excused mainly because.A.teachers should be compassionateB.he was only a childC.instructors were wiserD.he was threatened55.Which of the following might serve as the title of this passage?A.Human NatureB.Conditional PromisesC.How to Detect CheatingD.The Sadness of PlagiarismPassage4Convenience food helps companies by creating growth, but what is its effect on people? For people who think cooking was the foundation of civilization, the microwave is the last enemy. The communion of eating together is easily broken by a device that liberates households citizens from waiting for mealtimes. The first great revolution in the history of food is in danger of being undone. The companionship of the campfire, cooking pot and common table, which have helped to bond hu⁃mans in collaborative living for at least150,000years could be destroyed.Meals have certainly sated from the rise of convenience food. The only meals regularly taken together in Britain these days are at the weekend, among rich families struggling to retain some⁃thing of the old symbol of togetherness.Indeed, the day’s first meal has all but disappeared. In the 20th century the leisure British breakfast was undermined by the corn flake;in the21st breakfast is vanishing altogether a victim of the quick cup of coffee in Starbucks and the cereal bar. Convenience food has also made people forget how to cook. One of the apparent paradoxes of modern food is that while the amount of time spent cooking meals has fallen from60minutes a day in1980to13minutes a day in2002,the number of cooks and television programmer on cooking has multiplied. But perhaps this isn’t a paradox.Maybe it is because people can’t cook any more, so they need to be told how to do it,or maybe it is because people buy books about hobbies—golf, yachting—not about chores.Cooking has ceased to be a chore and has become a hobby. Although everybody lives in the kitchen, its facilities are increasingly for display rather than7——for use.Mr.Silverstein’s new book,“trading up”look at mid⁃range consumer’s milling now to splash out.He says that industrial⁃style Viking cook pot, with nearly twice the heat output of other ranges, have helped to push the“kitchen as theater”trend in hour goods. They cost from$1,000to$9,000. Some75%of them are never used.Convenience also has an impact on the healthiness,or otherwise,of food,of course there is nothing bad about ready⁃to⁃eat food itself. You don’t get much healthier than an apple, and super⁃markets sell a better⁃for⁃you range of ready⁃meals. But there is a limit to the number of apples peo⁃ple want to eat;and these days it is easier for people to eat the kind of food that makes them fat. The three Harvard economists in their paper“why have Americans become more obese?”point out that in the past,if people wanted to eat fatty hot food, they had to cook it.That took time and ener⁃gy—a good chip needs frying twice, once to cook the potato and once to get it crispy—Which dis⁃couraged of consumption of that cost of food.Mass preparation of food took away that constraint. Nobody has to cut and double cook their own fries these days.Who has the time?56.What might the previous paragraphs deal with?A.The relationship between meals and convenience food.B.The importance of convenience food in people’s life.C.The rise of convenience food.D.The history of food industry.57.What is the paradox in the third paragraph?A.People don’t know how to cook.B.The facilities in the kitchen are not totally used.C.People are becoming more obese, thus unhealthy.D.Convenience food actually does not save people time.58.What does the passage mainly discuss?A.The bad effects of convenience food.B.Mr.Silverstein’s new book.C.People’s new hobby.D.Disappearance of the old symbol of togetherness.59.Why has American become more obese?A.Because of eating chips.B.Because of being busy.C.Because of being lazy.D.B and C.60.Which of the following might the auther mostly agree with?A.There is nothing bad about convenience food.B.Convenience food makes people lazy.C.Convenience food helps companies grow.D.Convenience food is a revolution in cooking.8——第二部分综合能力测试(限时60分钟)一、经济常识题(每题1分,共20题)1.下列不属于中央银行的监管职能的是()。
