The author of the present thesis will analyze the five marriage patterns from the perspective of sociohistorical literary criticism to explore the important role that money and love plays in marriage. It can be seen clearly that Austen fully expresses her original views on marriage:property, social status and love are three indispensable elements in a marriage. It is wrong to marry for money, but it is unwise to marry without money. Austen‟s views on marriage emphasize love and economic condition, but love plays the significant role, which is the predominant aspect at Austen‟s time. The thesis tries to draw some inspiration from Austen and provide some hints for modern women in their view of marriage, and add something new into the literary criticism of the great work of Jane Austen.Key Words:Pride and Prejudice; views on marriage; love; property; realistic significance内容摘要简·奥斯汀是十九世纪英国文学史上最伟大的现实主义小说家之一。

As an authoress in the eighteenth century in England, she had a sensible idea on love and marriage. On her whole life, she wrote six novels: Northerner Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion, which describes various kinds of characters and their everyday life. Pride and Prejudice, one of the well-known novels in the history of the English literature, was published in 1813. The story talks about trivial matters of love, marriage and family life between country squires and fair ladies in Britain in the 18th century. Through the description of the daily talks and doings of young men and women, Austen pointed their characteristics. All of the characters had different experiences, and acted in different ways. However, they had a common pursuit, that‘s ‗good marriage‘. This paper is to make an analysis of four marriages in Pride and Prejudice and discuss the deep outlook for their marriage in the light of social background at the time. In describing the characters‘everyday life and one marriage after another, Austen expressed her sensible view on it clearly. In her opinion, money was essential to a marriage while the equality in social status would increase the possibility of the marriage, but what affected the marriage most were manners. According to her, it was the good manners that united the heroes and heroines. Compared with the social scene on marriage nowadays, maybe her view was so restricted. But during her time, her view was so advanced that it was not accepted widely. On summary, we can find the author‘s ideaabout marriage from the analysis: marriage, property and social status interconnected, but not absolutely.

英语论文-范本《傲慢与偏见》中的婚姻态度(英文)The Attitude of Marriage in Pride and Prejudice: What Has Affected the Choice of Marriage?《傲慢与偏见》中的婚姻态度什么影响了婚姻选择?1“This is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”(Jane Austen, 2021:1) This sentence was stem from the English woman novelist Jane Austen, which was the typical of her masterpiece .Thus it brings out a classic story concerning love and marriage, which took place in England at the beginning of the 19th century.Marriage is a topic that never ends; it has gone through for a long time. However, it is still stared by the public without hesitation. The marriage and human being are closely related, but few people can place themselvesoutside .However, person is different from each other. It is for this reason, everyone has a different marriage. Many anthropologists and sociologists keep on research in this field. Many writers also describe the marriage in their own works. Pride and Prejudice, this famous novel, also presents it to us the different marriages, leaving us to think about the marriage.I. The Summary of Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice can be divided into three parts; the main story is unfolded by the Bennet’s family. Mr. Bennet is an England gentleman, he was living in the country, and at the same time he does not have not much of property and 2000 income of the pounds annually. In the meantime, he had fivedaughters, Jane, Elizabeth, kitty, Mary, Lydia. When Mrs. Bennet comes to realize that it is impossible to have a son and all their property will be inherited by a nephew, so it becomes Mr. Bennet biggest worry to find a husband with great property and social status .“However little know the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughter.”(Jane Austen, 2021:1) Thus, when Mrs. Bennet hears about that Netherfield in the neighborhood will move into a rich bachelor she will be very happy. What makes her exciting is that the gentleman still brings to his friend who is richer than himself. On the dancing party, a beautiful girl Jane who has a long hair, beautiful figure shows her dignity and wins the heart of Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Bennet is bloated and is laughed by Mr. Bingley. While Mr. Darcy is arrogant, in his opinion that on the whole party, expect for the Bingley Sister, dance with other woman all is to suffer mental agony .This lets everyone dislike him very much. Accidentally, Elizabeth hears about Darcy's discussion a bout her. “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.” (Jane Austen, 2021:12) So she decides to leave Darcy alone.Jane goes and has a chance to visit to Bingley's family, but she is sick because of the raining in the half way, it is impossible to go home. Because of the deep sensibility between sister, Elizabeth visits to her on foot. Jane will be not willing to let her go, Elizabeth settles down. Jane recovers slowly, but Mrs. Bennet is very happy in that the two sisters have more chance to touch with the two rich gentlemen. Bingly loses his heart to Jane with time goes by, but the mistake between Darcy and Elizabeth is difficult to remove. However, Darcy has attacked by the alive and clever Elizabeth. When handsome military officer Wickham shows up, everyone is attacked by him,2Elizabeth has not exception. He tells Elizabeth that his father is the secretary of Darcy's father. Aft er Darcy’s father death, Darcy does notfollow the testament to look after Wickham. Because of the mistake between Elizabeth and Darcy, Elizabeth believes in Wickham's words without hesitation. At this time, Collins who is the Bennet family's prospector inheritor shows up in their daily life. With the help of the Darcy’s aunt, he gets a profession as a priest and satisfied with his situation. For this reason, he decides to marry a lady to compensate the losses the sisters have suffered for his inherit of their property. At first, he in favor of Jane, after taking the hind from Mrs. Bennet, he makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth, but he is refused. At last, he makes a proposal to Elizabeth’s friend Charlotte successfully. At the beginning of winter and his friends leave without saying goodbye, this makes Mrs. Bennet and Jane disappoints. Jane receives a letter from Miss. Bingley; which says in the letter that Darcy's sister and Mr. Bingley find each other are suitable. Jane is unhappy. But Elizabeth thinks that there must be some other reasons. Mrs. Bennet's brother Mr. Gardenia takes Jane to London to stretch her leg, but Jane all the time has no chance to see her beloved. Elizabeth is invested by her good friend to have a visit to her new house. Suddenly, Darcy makes a proposal of marriage to Elizabeth; his pose is still very arrogant so as to refuse by Elizabeth. Because she can not forgiveDarcy's arrogant to Wickham, because his prejudice breaks up Jane and Bingley. Darcy leaves in despair. In the summer, Gardenias and Elizabeth have a visit together, when they hear about Darcy is out of the house, by the way, their go to his park, while they meet with the Darcy who comes back in advance. Elizabeth finds that Darcy has changed. He is not pride anymore and does not look down on his family with low social status. What is most important, Darcy looks love her as usual. But this time, the smallest daughter Lydia elopes with Wickham. This is the shame of the family. Elizabeth goes back to do some help in hurry. In the end, Wickham gets a great deal of money and gets married with Lydia formally. The shame affair is covered .But Elizabeth does not count on Darcy to love her. From the Lydia, Elizabeth knows that it is Darcy who had been borrowed them money and in present the wedding. This makes Elizabeth to feel surprises in that she has already realized the truth between Darcy and Wickham. She begins to envisage her inter heart; she comes to realize that she still love Darcy deeply. Bingley and Darcy go back to the Netherfield Park. Bingley makes a proposal to Jane, who makes Darcy and Elizabeth go together. However, Darcy’s aunt does not agree with their love, while Elizabeth faces it bravely. This makes Darcy to realize that Elizabeth still love him.At the end,Elizabeth and Darcy, as well as Jane and Bingley live happily,While Mrs. Bennet is well to proud to marry three daughters.II. The Background of Pride and PrejudiceA. The Author of This NovelFrom my standpoint, a good grasp of the career of the author was a must to fully understanding a work. Jane Austin (1775-1817), the author of the novel Pride and Prejudice, was born in Steventon of Hampshire, where her father wasa rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family. Herfather and brothers once educated in Oxford. As a result, her family took possession of a big collection of books. She was well tutored at home underthe guidance of her brothers when she was very young. As3Jane Austin put it in Pride and Prejudice: \all the masters that were necessary.\Austen, 2021: 205) In addition to study, she could be seen in a variety of social intercourse. She kept observing and thinking in a world composed of familial and bourgeoisie background. Not only was she acclimatedto such style of life, she was also familiar with and fond of it as well. She considered it to be complete, animated and with the beauty of poem. Thereputed Charlotte Bront once remarked: “I would not li ke to stay in her small house with gentlemen and gentlewomen of her.”①(刘洪涛,2021:169) This seemed to have become a typical criticism. Jane Austin was not as narrow as that, in fact, she did enjoy the bourgeoisie life and never regarded it to be narrow. Conversely, she was longing to draw a picture of it literally and toair the feeling and understanding of her own, as a result of which sheachieved the masterpiece that Maugham considered to be perfect. Jane Austin's work was primarily concerned with the marriages and romance between man and woman, but the author herself who arranged marriages for the protagonists in novels never got married. Perhaps it was writing that she was enamored of. She started to write when she was young. She made the best of her time atbreakfast in writing from Miss. Sun and Love and Friendliness and gradually finished the first scripts and repeatedly revised. Sense and sensibility was finished in 1795, pride and prejudice in 1796 and Northanger Abbey in 1798.She was obscure at that and failed to find any press to publish her novels. In1809, Jane Austin’s family moved to Bath where she completed Mansfield Parkin 1812, Emma in 1814 and Persuasion in 1816. The works sense and sensibility and pride and prejudice during the early stage of writing came to be brought out since 1811 and Emma published in 1816 received a wide range of praise. Jane Austin became a famous writer afterwards. Much to our sorrow, when she had the opportunity to begin life anew, her health began deteriorating and died in July eight, 1817. Mansfield Park and Persuasion were published in the second year of her death. If Jane Austin lived a little longer, the reputation of her novels brought her could encourage her to produce more sterling works. In her times, with the advent of French Revolution and Industrialization, the development of capitalism hit a new hit. Conversely, she did not depict the great changes taking place in her times, but rather percepted and felt from the internal part of the bourgeoisie life, and on her close examination of the marriages, she tried to build ethic ties of honesty and harmony inside the changing class. Pride and prejudice is such kind of novel that is still popular nowadays. The literary criticism William Somerset Maugham even ranks it top ten of the most popular novels in the world. ①(牛庸懋蒋连杰,1986:123-124)B. The Social BackgroundNot only do we need to be well informed of a writer, more importantly, we should know the social background. Novels stem from life and go above life. To learn the social background can help us to understand better the genuine reason purposes of writers. Human entered into the period of paternity since Zeus created the huge scale of kinship. Through orthodox, order and various restrictions, paternal culture reduced women to inferior creature. Women's status was very low even in 18th and 19th centuries. Men snatched the control of economy, politics and ideology and they considered women as inferior animals and repulsed them overtly. ①(杨莉馨,从《傲慢与偏见》的结构谈简・奥斯丁的女性意识) The society with Jane Austin lived in witnessed a climax of the development4of capitalism, but the feudalism was still powerful, equality between men and women was still out of reach, especially in the distribution of inheritance, men enjoyed priority. The order of the division of the property went this: from male (a lineal consanguinity) to male (a collateralconsanguinity), and than to the female. ①(陈棠,理性的光芒---傲慢与偏见与简奥斯丁的婚姻道德观) So the ownership of the female property would see it destiny in the end. The novel Pride and Prejudice also mentioned: if one family did not have a male inheritor, their property would be only inherited by another male in the family; the only possibility for the female was to depend on this male inheritor. If the inheritor did not take them seriously, they would only wonder around the street. For this reason, finding a shelter for themselves without worrying about foot and clothes was of importance. It was in this type of social environment that brought up the truth that we have mentioned at the beginning of the passage. It was just for this piece of truth that provided the women hope and the object they were fighting for. At the same time, author advantaged of the marriage provided for the woman was that it could improve their economic and social status. After understanding the social background at time , definite the priority the female had in the property inherited and realized that the only way for the female as a social garniture was to get married , then it was easy to understand that Mrs. Bennet strongly desired to marry her daughters and the purpose of Elizabeth’s friend’s marriage as well as Mr. Darcy’s behavior to break up the affection between Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Bennet and Darcy’s aunt’s behavior t o opposite the affection between Darcy and Elizabeth. All of those became reasonable and logical.III. The Five Marriages in This NovelWhen knows the author and the society background, let’s look at the marriage in this novel. In Pride and Prejudice, there are five marriages. They are Bennets’ marriage, marriage of Jane and Bingley, marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy, marriage of Lydia and Wickham, marriage of Charlotte and Collins. We often say: “All happy families resemble one another; each unhappy family is its own way.” (托尔斯泰 2021:1) The persons are differences too. So every marriage has its own feature. When we begin to analyze these marriages, we can find out that the present social environment is not only factor that influences the marriages. As it is known to us, for the children, the family environment is more important than social environment. It maybe influences many aspects of children. But the main factor is the parents. Because parents are the first teachers for children, every word and behavior maybe affectstheir children. In this novel, we should analyze the Bennets’ marriage before we see other marriages.A. Bennet’s MarriageThere do not have the intuitional depiction about Bennet’s marriage. But what do children see and the dialogues between Bennets show us the unhappy marriage. Everyone knows that the foundation of the marriage is to understand each other. However Mr. Bennet is so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of the three and twenty years has been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. The husband and wife should have the equal levels which is another basic condition of the marriage. In this novel, Mrs. Bennet is a woman of mean5感谢您的阅读,祝您生活愉快。

英语作文傲慢与偏见

英语作文傲慢与偏见

英语作文傲慢与偏见Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by Jane Austen in the early 19th century. It tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a young woman from a lower-middle-class family who is determined to marry for love rather than for financial security. The novel explores themes of social class, marriage, and the role of women in society. One of the main themes of the novel is pride and prejudice. The title itself suggests that these two qualities are central to the story. Pride is a feeling of superiority or self-importance, while prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Both of these qualities are displayed by many of the characters in the novel, and they often lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. One of the most prominent examples of pride in the novel is Mr. Darcy. He is wealthy, intelligent, and handsome, and he knows it. He is often aloof andcondescending towards those he considers beneath him, including Elizabeth and her family. His pride is so strong that it blinds him to his own faults and makes it difficult for him to form meaningful relationships.Elizabeth, on the other hand, is guilty of prejudice. She forms an opinion of Mr. Darcy based on his initial behavior towards her and her family. She believes him to be arrogant and rude, and she is quick to judge him without really getting to know him. Her prejudice prevents her from seeing the good in Mr. Darcy and causes her to miss out on a potential love match.Throughout the novel, both Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth learn to overcome their pride and prejudice. Mr. Darcy realizes that his behavior towards others has been hurtful and that he needs to change if he wants to be happy. He apologizes to Elizabeth for his past behavior and works to earn her respect and affection. Elizabeth, in turn, learns to see past her initial prejudices and to appreciate Mr. Darcy for who he truly is.In conclusion, Pride and Prejudice is a novel that explores the themes of pride and prejudice and their impact on relationships. Through the characters of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Austen shows us the dangers of these qualities and the importance of overcoming them. The novel remains a classic today because its themes are still relevant and its characters are still relatable.。

The author thinks that Bingley and Jane have many similarities in their characters which lead them to a successful marriage although they all lack strength in their marriage. The author also points out that Bingley and Jane married for love not for the money status or good looks. So the combination of them is really a blessed and happy marriage.Key words:Marriage Love Interests happyContentJane Austen( 1775-1817 )who was born at Steventon on December 16 1775 was one of the greatest novelists in England. She was the youngest of seven children in her family. She received most of her education at home. Her family are allfond of reading books which influenced her very much. Her reading extended little beyond the literature of the eighteenth century and within that period she admired Dr. Johnson particularly. And later she was delighted with both the poetry and prose of Scott. Shedied on July 18 1817 and was buried in the cathedral in Winchester. She totally wrote six novels in her life. Among the six novels Pride and Prejudice has been valued as the most successful and popular masterpiece. In this novel Jane Austen mainly described the ordinary life of the Bennets . She told us four different marriages to show the readers that different people have different attitudes towards love. Andalso she expressed her own viewpoints on marriage that a combination based on love and similar interests is a happy and perfect marriage. In her opinion the money-oriented marriage and sex-oriented marriage are not successful although the people can live together. The theme is narrow but she showed us a beautiful tableau of the England people’s life of her own time. It seems that she had a talent to describe the ordinary life of people.“Read again and for the third time at least Miss Austens very finely written novel of Pride and Prejudice. That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements and feelings andcharacters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with.”1Because of the lack of her experiences and knowledge the characters in Pride and Prejudice are all of her own social class: The ladies and gentlemen of the landed gentry. And also in every conversation there was at least one lady.“The conversations of ladies with ladies or of ladies and gentlemen together are given but no instance occurs of a scene in which men only are present.”2Most parts of the story are the intricacies of courtships and marriages between the members of her class which are great attraction to many readers.Among all the marriages in this novel the combination of pleasant Bingley and mild Jane is the most blessed and happy one. The couple has similar interests and they insisted on pursuing their true love which lead them to a happy and perfect marriage.Mr. Bingley was a good looking and gentlemanlike person whose revenues were about 5000 pounds a year. As a young man who had good breeding he was cordial and simple with easily-led disposition. With this character he never appeared dissatisfied. He was easy to approach and constant in love although he was veryrich. However he lacked strength and independence in his marriage which was a grievous defect of him. In the novel Bingley was popular with almost everybody in everywhere. He had a pleasant countenance and easy unaffected manners. It is easy to find that he was agreeable both in appearance and character. The first appearance of Bingley was the time when he “returned Mr. Benner’s visit and sat about ten minutes with him in his library.”3But the exact time when the readers began to know him was some days later. At the first ball at Nether field he was shown to everybody and the readers began to make acquaintance of his personality through his behavior.“Mr. Bingley had soon made himself acquainted with all the principal people in the room he was lively and unreserved danced every dance was angry that the ball closed so early and talked of giving one himself at Nether field. Such amiable qualities must speak for themselves.”4Of course these personal strength won Jane’s admiration. She thought that he was just what a young man ought to be. In her eyes Mr. Bingley was a sensible good-humored lively young man. And she had never seen anyone who had so many advantages with perfect good breeding He was just her Mr.Right At that ball,“Bingley’s attentions to Jane had given rise to a general expectation of their marriage. He spoke of it as a certain event of which the time alone could been decided.”5Mr. Bingley also noticed Jane at that night. He fell in love with Jane at their first ball and their romance flourished quietly and steadily. His affection towards Jane was obviously sincere and unaffected. It was obvious that when Jane suffered a trifling cold he was worried about her. His anxiety and attention to her was evident. For example when Elizabeth said that she couldn’t leave her sister because Jane’s illness was worse “Bingley urged Mr. Jones’s being sent for immediately.”6 and “Bingley was quite uncomfortable.”7 The following sentences also are the evidences:“but diffuseness and warmth remained for Bingley’s salutation. He was full of joy and attention. The first half hour was spent in piling up the fire lest she should suffer from the change of room and she removed at his desire to the other side of the fire-place that she might be farther from the door. He then sat down by her and talked scarcely to anyone else.”8It is not difficult for the readers to find Bingley’s real concernand affection towards Jane from these details. He was cordial and constant in his love.As a pleasant and modest person Mr. Bingley was far from the man who was strong and determined. This is his merit but also his demerit. His cordial and simple character leads to his quiet romance with Jane. But his weak and easily-led character leads to his parting with Jane. So when their romance went smoothly he suddenly departed from Jane which nearly ends his happy love and marriage.Generally speaking his departure from Jane was caused by the relationship between him and Darcy. They were good friends although they were different in character.Between them there was a very steady and constant friendship. Bingley was endeared to Darcy by the easiness openness and ductility of his temper. It is no doubt for Darcy that Bingley had the firmest reliance. For Darcy he wanted to help his friend. In his opinion it is impossible for Jane to love Bingley. So he persuaded Bingley not to take Jane in marriage. This point can be found from his letter to Elizabeth:“Her Jane look and manners were open cheerful and engaging as ever but without any symptom of peculiar regard and I remained convinced from the evening’s scrutiny thatthough she received his attentions with pleasure she did not invite them by any participation of sentiment.”9For Bingley he had an easily-led temper. He was so modest and pliable that he had no opinion about his own marriage. No matter how obvious his attachment to Jane was he believed Darcy’s representation of Jane’s indifference was true. Because Mr.Bingley’s two sisters didn’t like Jane they thought Mr. Bingley should choose Georgiana Darcy’s sister as his wife. So they also disagree with Bingley about his marriage with Jane. Under the influences of his sisters and Mr. Darcy Bingley beganto doubt Jane’s affection to him. Finally he thought Jane didn’t love him so he left her without saying good-bye. Later when all the misunderstandings clarified he came back to Jane at Darcy’s assistance. Bingley’s indecisive character determines his happiness and results that his life was controlled by others.Jane was the first children in her family. She was a kind and mild girl who was the most beautiful one among her sisters. As an introverted girl she is constant in her love but lacks strength and self-confidence. She didn’t want others to know her love to Mr.Bingley so she pretended that she had nothing to do with him. Compared with other girls she was the mostmild kind modest and almost perfect girl in this novel.Sometimes she was a little innocent. In her eyes everybody is perfect. She never saw the ugly fact of life even she was deceived. Her character is vividly showed in many parts of the novel. “Compliments always take you Jane by surprise and me Elizabeth never”10 and“Oh You Jane are a great deal too apt you know to like people in general you never see a fault in anybody all the world are too good and agreeable in your eyes. I Elizabeth never heard you speak ill of a human being in my life.”11According to this readers can find that how kind and innocent Jane was. And also it is quite natural for Jane to fall in love with the pleasant and simple Bingley. She met him at the ball and after then she adored Bingley very much. But with her introverted and tranquil disposition Jane controlled her passion too much which nearly consumed her felicity. Although she loved Mr. Bingley after the ball she had no courage to express it. She cherished her feelings towards him but she chose to conceal it. She didn’t display her true feelings. On the contrary she controlled her passion to the best of her ability lest anyone find it. She only showed genteel pleasure and politeness although her heart was fluttering withromantic passion. In a sense her attitude towards love was passive.According to the above Darcy thought that though Jane was pleased with Bingley she didn’t love him. He thought Jane’s “countenance and air was such as might have given the most acute observer aconviction that however amiable her temper her heart was not likely to be easily touched.”12In his eyes Bingley was involved in an unavailable love. So after then he made great efforts to separate Bingley from Jane. After Bingley’s departure Jane suffered great distress. She was very depressed. But because of the defect of her character she pretended to be all right and said nothing about her sadness. Here readers can find that her weakness and obedience had been thoroughly exposed. In the novel Bingley and Jane never stopped pursuing their true love although there were so many obstacles between them. Fortunately with the help of Darcy and Elizabeth they finally got married and had a happy life. Bingley and Jane had many similarities in their characters which is the main reason to the success of their marriage. They possessed personal attractiveness and dignity social graces and a measure of good sense. They all had good breeding but lacked insightstrength and self-confidence. They didn’t show their insides easily to the publics because they cared the social criticism too much. For Jane she always concealed her true feeling swhich gave others a illusion that she didn’t love Bingley. For Bingley he yielded easily to criticism of Jane’s social position and easily accepted the suggestions of his sisters and Darcy which almost consumed the felicity between Jane and him. In manner of speaking the outside forces facilitated their marriage.According to the relationship between Bingley and Jane love and similar interests are the basic factors of a successful and happy marriage. With many similarities in character people can understand each other easily. Most important of all the couple with similar interests can live together with a happy life because there are understandings helps and supporting between them. They don’t care the defects of their partners and even they don’t see any faults in each other. Just as the old saying going “Birds of a feather flock together people of a mind fill into the same group.”Notes1.Walter Scott The Journal of Sir Walter Scott March 1826.2.

On Austen’s views on Marriage in Pride and Prejudice Abstract:Jane Austen, the greatest realistic writer in English literature, writes altogether six complete novels centering on love and marriage.Pride and Prejudice is regarded as her masterpiece. In this novel,Austen describes a narrow range of society:the middle class squires and fair young ladies in country surrounding from her own experiences.Through her description of four different marriages and analysis of the main characters’ personality in the s pecific period of time which put great influence on the result of marriages should be based on love and mutual understanding as well as certain economic condition. That is Jane Austen’s viewpoint on marriage, she believes that love is the most fundamental condition for a happy marriage, which should be base on a large mount of money or a considerable fortune. This view which constantly appears in her novels,is not determined by her morality but by the historical background while the author’s life experience and living surroundings are also necessary elements.Key Words: Jane Austen ; Pride and Prejudice ; love and marriage “Jane Austen (1775-1817) was born in Hampshire, a country priest family located in Hants, the village of Kingston, Sidemen in north England. She was a beautiful, talented middle class woman with extraordinary temperament and good cultivation. Her six novels-Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Manshifeierde Manor, Emma, Persuasion all describe more than marriage.”.(Wang Shouren, 2005)However, her marriage is like a blank paper in her 42 years real lifetime. Going through the finest time, but eventually without meeting a comfortable partner, she gives up her love. Going through the sweet and bitter feeling which helps her to write the great work pride and prejudice.Pride and Prejudice ,published in 1813,is considered as her masterpiece which is also regarded as one of the best novels in English literature. In this novel,Austen describes a narrow range of society,a wealthy and middle class circle in countryside which she knows from her own experiences. This novel actually tells about trial things, matters of love, marriage and family life between country squires and fair ladies in the 18th century. But Pride and Prejudice reveals more than these love stories. The dominant role in the novel is marriage, which is discussed in the famous opening line:it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession ofa good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelingsor views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truthis so well fixed in minds of the surrounding families. (Austen,2004)Jane Austen presents four different marriages in the novel to indicate that a happy marriage with firm foundation takes time to build and must be based on mutual feelings, understanding and respect;instant marriage based on superficial qualities will not last long and will lead to unhappiness. What factors could put great influence on a happy marriage ? And what are Jane Austen’own views on marriage ?In the following context ,I’ll introduce you Jane Austen’s views on marriage .1)Charlotte and Collins’ marriage (based on money or benefit)The first marriage presents in the novel is the marriage between Charlotte and Collins.Collins is a conceited and foolish young man,he would inherit the estate of Longbourn and the property of Mr. Bennet after his death, which would deprive the five daughters of Mr. Bennet of everything.Collins is pompous and narrow-minded who never possess his own conception of love,he intends to get married merely because it is the specific advice and recommendation of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. To begin with,he makes up his mind to marry one of the daughters of Mr. Bennet as a way of reconciliation with the Longbourn family. The beautiful Jane, undoubtedly is his first choice. But when he is informed that Jane is privately engaged,he easily decides that Elizabeth who is equally next to Jane in birth and beauty would be his second goal as an alternative.Collins makes two times of proposal to Elizabeth but she refused him in return.Having been refused by Elizabeth,he quickly marries Charlotte. In the novelAusten presents how soon Collins makes this decision:“in as short time as Mr. Collins’long speeches would allow, everything was settled between them to the satisfaction of both”.We can see here that his love to Charlotte is by no means sincere and arde nt.To Collins,a wife is his real concern,it doesn’t matter who she is! Charlotte seems to be a mediocre and vain young lady . She accepts Collins solely from the pure and disinterested desire of an establishment. Her plainness and eagerness to get married p revent her from discovering Collins’pomposity and foolishness.2)Lydia and Wickham’s marriage (based on vanity and carelessness)The combination of dissolute Wickham and empty-minded Lydia results in a sex-orientated marriage. Wickham first appears as a very charming fellow. But his character,on the contrary, was mean and wicked.Jane Austen describes him like this in the novel:A curious degree of sexual attraction often goes with a lively, unreliabledisposition, which may either be somewhat superficial but perfectly well-meaning,or driven by circumstance which it has not the strength to withstand, becomethat of a scoundrel.Lydia is a stout,well-grown girl of fifteen, also is the favorite one to her mother, whose affection has brought her into public at an early age.Lydia is also an empty-minded girl who never ceases seeking her own fun and sexual excitement. The only interest in her life is to flirt with red-coated official in a militia regiment in the neighborhood. Therefore, her elopement with Wickham is not very sudden. It really leaves us some rooms to contemplate Wickham’s real motivation.Lydia is not rich,it seems that it is not sensible for Wickham to elope with her.Nevertheless, further reading tells us that Wickham’s real motivation.First,he is a dissolute man who never ceases seeking sexual passion.Second,he avails himself of a chance to flee his creditors. His flight is rendered necessary by distress of circumstances rather than by his affection to Lydia.3)Jane and Bingley’s marriage (based on same intere sts and love) The marriage between Jane and Bingley is an exampleof good marriage.Jane, the eldest in the Bennet family, who is beautiful,good-tempered,sweet,amiable and modest. She always refuses to judge anyone badly.Bingley, much like Jane,is an amiable and good-mannered person. He is not concerned with class differences and Jane’s poor family connections which can not stop him from falling in love with Jane.Jane Austen expresses her opinion of this through Elizabeth in the novel: Elizabeth really believed all this Bingley expectations of felicity to be rationally founded, because they had for basis the excellent understanding, and super-excellent disposition of Jane, and a general similarity of feeling and taste between her and himself.Bingley is far from the man who is strong and determined which always makes their love stroy in danger,When their romance goes smoothly,he leaves Jane suddenly because Bingley is gullible to believe anyone, under the influence of Darcy,he begins to doubt Jame’s affection to him self,so he leaves her without saying goodbye.Having been informed of Bingley’s departure,Jane is in great distress, but she pretends to be all right and says nothing about her sadness.Jane is liable to keep a passive attitude towards anything. Finally when all misunderstanding is clarified,he comes back to Jane through Darcy and Elizabeth’s assistance.4)Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage (based on true love)The combination Darcy and Elizabeth, results in a successful marriage.Darcy appears to be a handsome man with arrogant manners while Elizabeth is a witty and sensible lady. She is always ready to change herself once she fines her mistakes. The first impression they leave to each other is not good,Elizabeth takes prejudice on Darcy because she thinks that Darcy is too proudand look down upon the middle-class girls, while Darcy shows his pride when he expresses his affections and proposes to Elizabeth.Darcy begins to love Elizabeth gradually by constantly getting along with her.He admires her for her intelligence and disposition,so Darcy tries to understand Elizabeth by every possible means. His first proposal to Elizabeth is the culmination of the novel.Darcy who suffers from his own long-suppressed feeling decides to propose to Elizabeth,it is not easy for him to accept her regardless of her humble family and inferior position, but his sincere affection for Elizabeth makes him conquer his own pride and propose to her.Unfortunately Elizabeth refuses him for hisarrogance.Darcy is embarrassed and ruffled but he does not lose control of himself. He acts as a real gentleman and asks Elizabeth to forgive him taking up so much of her time.Undoubtedly,Darcy’s love to Elizabeth is ardent and sincere, even Elizabeth herself is quite astonished at his court and sorry for the pain he has suffered. As Austen writes in her novel: that he should have been in love with her for so many months! So much in love as to wish to marry her in spite of all the objection which had prevented his friend’s marrying her sister, and must appear at lease with equal force in his own case, was almost incredible!Darcy makes his mind to change himself ,which proves that his love to Elizabeth is not merely an overnight’s impulse. After having been accused of arrogance and selfishness,Darcy changes greatly and w ins Elizabeth’s love in return. It is the real love that causes all these amazing changes.Jane Austen’s view of marriage: “Jane Austen is particularly preoccupied with the relationship between men and women inlove. Stories of love and marriage provide the major themes in all her novels, in which female characters are always playing an active part. In their pursuit of a marriage, they are usually categorized into three their types according to their different attitudes: 1.Those who would marry for material wealth and social position; 2.Those who would marry just for beauty and passion; 3.And those who would marry for true love with a consideration of the partner’s personal merit for true love with a consideration of the partner’s merit as well as his economi cal and social status. In another word, Jane Austen tries to say that it is wrong to marry just with money, but it is also wrong to marry without it.Therefor,I think Austen’s opinions on marriage have several influential factors. As follows:1)Women’s socia l statusThe position of women in the 19th century was very low.At that time, feminism was not paid attention to by common people.Practically, everyone believed that men were the dominant sex in the society.According to Ilannah More, “to a woman moral excellence is the grand object of education;and of moral excellence, domestic life is to woman the appropriate sphere.”2)Personal characters and valuesAs we know, the attitude towards marriage could make their marriage happy or not.In most cases, personality dec ides one’s attitude. In the successful marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy,Jane Austen is showing one of the best characteristics that a woman can have :an unconventional free will. She chooses to remain true love to her best by her heart and her own good sense.3)Pursuit of wealthProperty in a marriage is the subject matter of the wholenovel, and it plays an important role in marriage at that time. The four marriages in the novel are all involved with money(liu,1992),among which the successful marriage such as Elizabeth and Darcy’s and Bingley’s are partly based on property, while Charlotte and Collins’ marriage is mainly affected by money.Jane and Bingley’s marriage is once at risk. This is because both Jane and Bingley are countenance and easy to be affected by others or the circumstances.Bingley’s indecisive character determines that his happiness is controlled by others. We can see this point from Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth: her look and manners were open, cheerful and engaging as ever, but without any Symptom of peculiar regard, and I remained convinced from the evening, that thoughshe received his attentions with pleasure, she did not invite them by any participationof sentiment.Under the influence of Darcy,Bingley begins to doubt Jane’s affection to him, he leaves her without saying goodbye.Jane is always passive and tries to conceal her true feeling. They finally get married under the help of Darcy and Elizabeth.4)LoveIn Jane Austen’s novel, the theme of love and marriage makes her a different writer in romanticism(Nash,1989).In the novel, with regard to marriage unlike Charlotte,Elizabeth chooses to remain true love to her best heart and sense. She believes that marriage should be based on mutual understanding and feeling. Moreover, the relationship between Jane and Bingley is undoubtedly true love.Jane Austen suggests that love is an important factor to a successfulmarriage.Marriages that lack of true love are destined to have a bad result. In this novel,Lydia and Wickham’s marriage is unsuccessful.Jane Austen i mplies her theme through Jane’s words,“do anything rather than marry without affection.”ConclusionPride and Prejudice is a masterpiece in the world. From this work we know a lot about marriage and women’s life in the 19th century.Jane Austen expresses her own opinions on marriage and shows her deep sympathy on women. In her opinions , successful marriages should based on love, mutual understanding, respect, and certain amount of financial basis,Although she wrote this book in the 19th century, but her opinion can be applied to the modern society.Nowadays, people show various attitudes toward marriage, for example, some young ladies who are very attractive like to find a sugar-daddy while some young charming men want to marry rich women even though these women are much older than them. These people are confined to the range of person who pursue of wealth and material enjoyment.Marriage is one of the key points in our life,so I think we should make sensible judgment on marriage.Bibliography:[1] Nash,G. 1989. Woman’s views of Love in Pride andPrejudiceContentChapterⅠ IntroductionChapterⅡ Woman’s views of marriages in the novel1.Mrs. Bennet's views of love2.Jane Bennet’s views of love3.Elizabeth Bennet ’s views of love4.Lydia Bennet’s views of loveChapterⅢ. ConclusionAbstractPride and Prejudice, a classic, displayed many fascinating ideas. This novel is narrow but deep. On the analysis of woman’s views of marriage, this article demonstrates the true feeling of women and the multi-faceted human nature in this contemporary society, which plays a certain role in studying the social environment. Key word:Pride and Prejudice; views of love; character;environmentChapterⅠ. IntroductionJane Austen is an earliest and most important woman novelist in English Literature. Different from the style of Scott’s fictions. She kept her eyes steadily upon the people and incident about her, and writer about the small world she lived in. “She was the founder of the novel which deals with unimportant middle-class people and of which there are many fine examples in later English fiction.” English novel describe marriage and family in that society too much all log. But different from the common novels, it reflects the life of middle-class in capitalist society through the description of marriage problem. Jane Austen describes four couples’ marriage mainly in it. Their attitude towards marriage are completely different. Through the life of middle-class in the middle of 18th century, the four couples joys and sorrows affect me, especially the four women, Mrs.Bennet's moral marriage, Elizabeth’s perfect marriage, Jane Bennet’s happy marriage, Lydia’s sex-oriented marriage. Mrs. Bennet's main interest in life is to find suitable husbands for her five daughters, while the heroin Elizabeth is intelligent, lively and humor. She has strong human dignity. She refuses the proposal of Collins who is rich but she don’t love, refuses steadily rich young noble Darcy’s proposal because Elizabeth thinks Darcy is condescend and pride, she can’t bear. Jane is the eldest in the family. Beautiful, good-tempered, sweet, amiable, and modest, she is universally well liked. She refuses to judge anyone badly. Lidia is uncontrolled ,fearless. She enjoys searching of the officer in Meryton. Wickham is one of them. She can’t resit Wickham’s sweet words and run away with him. So, I’m interested in studying their four women of view on marriage.ChapterⅡWoman’s views of love in the novelWomen play a very important role in a marriage. Of course, Marriage is a very important part in everybody’s life, especially for woman. This article is analysis the four women in Bennets’ family.1.Mrs. Bennet's views of loveMrs.Bennet, a empty-mind ,noisy woman whose only goal in life is to see her daughters married. Because of her own breeding and often unbecoming behavior, Mrs. Bennet often repels the very suitors whom she tries to attract for her daughters. Ironically, her single-minded pursuit of this goal tends to backfire, as her lack of social graces alienates the very people (Darcy and Bingley) whom she tries desperately to attract. Austen uses her continually to highlight the necessity of marriage for young women. Mrs. Bennet also serves as a middle-class counterpoint to such upper-class snobs as Lady Catherine and Miss Bingley, demonstrating that foolishness can be found at every level of society. In the end, however, Mrs. Bennet proves such an unattractive figure, lacking redeeming characteristics of any kind, that some readers have accused Austen of unfairness in portraying her—as if Austen, like Mr. Bennet, took perverse pleasure in poking fun at a woman already scorned as a result of her ill breeding. But Mrs. Bennet is totally obedient and submissive in her marriage, and Mr. Bennet would rather laugh at her than help her, Austen shows her sympathy with women in their traditional marriages and low status in society.2.Jane Bennet’s views of loveJane Bennet, the eldest daughter. She is kind and beautiful, but too good-hearted. As to Jane, she never thinks ill for any body and she shows her warm sympathetic feelings in an easy manner. Her character is vividly showed in many parts of the novel. The writer used words as “mild”,”steady”, “rectitude”, and “delicacy”to describe her. Besides these, she wrote, “All loveliness and goodness as she is!” Her understanding excellent, her mind improved, and her manner captivating.”All her good qualities decide her love to Bingley is constant, but she lacks strength and self-confidence when he is separated from Bingly. She is loyal in love, on the other hand she has the shortcoming of lacking strength and self-confidence. The rumour has almost made her believe Bingly loves her no more. It is Elizabeth who assures her of his loving and his coming back. She should be brave for love.3. Elizabeth Bennet ’s views of loveElizabeth is the main character in this novel. She has own insight into everything. What’s more, Elizabeth is a intelligent and sensible girl, who is self-dignified and prone to hasty judgements. She is also brave and discreet in her love. Mrs Bennet wants to marry one of her daughter to Mr Collins, for the purpose from Jane to Elizabeth. She encourage to accept it. But Elizabeth is not attracted by his superior position, and she refuses firmly. She proudly refused his proposal four months ago, now she sadly and grate-fully expects his proposal. She finds Darcy deserves her loving. We can see her sensibility from this point. She says to her father. “I do,I do like him,” she replied, with tears in her eyes, “I love him, Indeed he has no improper pride. He is perfectly amiable. You do not know what he really is; then pray do not pain me by speaking of him in such term. ” Certainly she obtains her successful love.4. Lydia Bennet’s views of loveLydia is Elizabeth’s youngest sister, a stout, well-grown girl of fifteen. She is ignorant, idle and vain, Especially she is found of fun, flirtation and seducement. Her licentious words are as follows:“Have you seen any pleasant men? Have you had any flirting?”“Lord, how ashamed I should be of not being married before three and twenty!”The writer describes, “She wants only encouragement to attach herself to any body. Sometimes one officer, sometimes another has been her favorite, as their attention raised in her opinion. Her affection have been continually fluctuating, but never without an object, while there is an officer in Meryton, she will flirt with him;and while Meryton is with a walk of Longbourn. She will be going there forever.”Even when the regiment went to Brighton from Meryton, Lydia is very sad at this, she asks her parents to let her go there to be with the officers. So her licentiousness and ignorance lead to her elopement with Wickham.Chapter Ⅲ. ConclusionPride and prejudice is a masterpiece in the world. Form this article we know a lot about women’s views of love in the 19th century. Jane Austen expresses her own opinion on love and shows her deep sympathy on women. The viewpoint--- “Love is the basis of the happy marriage”which proves Lydia’s sadness and Elizabeth’s happiness. Although she wrote this book in the 19th century, but her opinion can be applied to the modern society. Nowadays, people show various attitudes toward love, especially, for some girls or young ladies, they will do anything for money and beautiful clothes, even they can marry the man who are much older than them. They just considerate wealth and material enjoyment. Different attitudes towards love and different concepts of love result in different love life. Moreover, these four women are live in same environment, they have different pursuit for love. So I think we should make a sensible choice on love, with following your happy heart.Name:戚倩倩Class:B12级英语5班Number:124104055019。

Written by Jane Austen, the novel explores the themes of love, marriage, class, and societal expectations. At the heart of the story are the two main characters, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, whose pride and prejudice initially prevent them from seeing the true nature of each other. As the story unfolds, both characters learn to overcome their flaws and prejudices, ultimately finding love and happiness. One of the central themes of Pride and Prejudice is the role of social classin the lives of the characters. The novel is set in the early 19th century, a time when social status and wealth heavily influenced one's prospects for marriage and social standing. The Bennet family, though respectable, is of a lower social class compared to Mr. Darcy and his wealthy, aristocratic circle. This class divide creates tension and obstacles for the characters, as they navigate theexpectations and limitations imposed by their respective social standings.Another important theme in the novel is the nature of love and marriage. Throughout the story, we see various examples of marriages based on convenience, financial security, and social status. These marriages often lack love and genuine connection, leading to unhappiness and dissatisfaction. Elizabeth Bennet, in particular, is determined to marry for love and refuses to settle for a marriageof convenience, despite the pressures from her family and society. Her refusal to conform to societal expectations and her insistence on marrying for love arecentral to the novel's exploration of love and marriage. The characters in Pride and Prejudice also grapple with the impact of prideand prejudice on their relationships and interactions with others. Mr. Darcy's initial pride and Elizabeth's prejudice against him serve as barriers to their potential happiness. It is only through self-reflection, personal growth, and overcoming their own shortcomings that they are able to move past these obstacles and find true love with each other. The novel serves as a reminder of thedestructive nature of pride and prejudice, and the importance of humility and open-mindedness in forming meaningful connections with others.Furthermore, the novel also sheds light on the limited options available to women in the 19th century. Women were expected to marry well in order to secure their financial future and social standing. Elizabeth Bennet, however, challenges these expectations by refusing to marry for anything other than love. Her independence and strong-willed nature make her a compelling and relatable character for modern readers, as she defies the societal norms of her time and seeks a marriage based on mutual respect and affection. In conclusion, Pride and Prejudice remains a beloved classic due to its timeless themes of love, marriage, social class, and personal growth. Through the characters of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, Jane Austen skillfully explores the complexities of human relationships and the societal constraints that shape them. The novel's enduring appeal lies in its universal themes and the enduring relevance of its characters, making it a timeless and cherished work of literature.。

For Socialist-feminists, material factors shape women's marital consciousness in determinate ways. The discussions of male class and female status in the end of the eighteenth century are helpful for understanding why marriage is the central topic in Austen's novels. In a sense, marriage is regarded as a market place to exchange upward class mobility and financial support for Austen's characters. In order to achieve the goal of marriage, females are good at transforming themselves into commodities by displaying their appearances and accomplishments to appeal to male gazers. They realize that marriage can provide opportunities of class mobility and financial support; money and class are thus closely connected in their decision of marital partners. keywords: Plot overview ;.Analysis of the major character ;Themes ;Motifs ;Pride and Prejudice ;marriage The feeling of 《Pride And Prejudice》Then mantreat great event in one's life with punishing, Demonstrate different attitudes to the love question of the marriage of young girl of the family origin of middle class of villages and towns, Thus reflected authors oneself's marriage view: It is wrong to get married for the property, money and position; Get married and does not consider that above-mentioned factors are unwise too . Many people simplyregard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters. The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the best classic book, according to a poll of Times readers. One in ten ranked the novel, published in 1813, as their favourite work to have been written more than 100 years ago. Jane Austen was born at Steventon on December 16, 1775, the youngest of seven children. She received her education—scanty enough, by modern standards—at home. She has a gift of telling a story in a way that has never been surpassed. She rules her places, times, characters, and marshals them with unerring precision. Her machinery is simple but complete; events group themselves so vividly and naturally in her mind that, in describing imaginary scenes, we seem not only to read them but to live them, to see the people coming and going—the gentlemen courteous and in top-boots,the ladies demure and piquant; we can almost hear them talking to one another. No retrospects; no abrupt flights, as in real life. In this paper, the characteristics of language using and writing styles in Pride and Prejudice were presented. People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economi c needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man. I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century. In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in oursociety. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything? Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the econo mic relationships both at her time and in modern time. In “pride and prejudice”, there is no twist polt as well heartquaking scene, reverse, as if the author only write it casually. But her lofty narrate technique is attracting many readers and essayists. The graceful dialog in the book plays an important role in the depiction of the characters.[参考资料] REFERENCE [1] Butler, Marilyn, Jane Austen and the War of Ideas, (Oxford: Clarendon ), 1975:216 [2] Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, eds. In this way, the couple can gettogether properly and legally. For the purpose of love withoutany other substances, people marry happily. However, I canrealize different views of marriage among the young people inthe book of Pride and Prejudice and by the way of reading it,I have deeper thought about marriage.key words: marriage social status wealth family background1.IntroductionPride and Prejudice, taking the daily life for the material, reflects the real English countryside life and ways of the world in the condition of conservation and obstruction. By using the technique of writing of satire and humor, the work tells different kinds of personalities and life attitudes. The writer shows different views of marriage in the book. For them, marriage is sometimes equal to a business in which people can get what they are eager for except love. It seems that marriage cannot bring true love but materials. This book arouses my curiosity and lets us wonder which form of marriage can make happiness and suit ourselves. Both in the west and in China, Pride and Prejudice has got great attention from the critics and many critics have commented it from sociohistorical aspect. Although some scholars analyzed Austen’s views on marriage, the marriage should aim to make a deep analysis in order that we can completely understand the original views on marriage and add something new into the literary criticism of the great work of Jane Austen. The young people have distinct attitudes towards marriage and choose their loved ones differently. People marry for different purposes, some for wealth, some for appearance, some for desire and some only for love. Exactly their attitudes towards a man to marry reflect their view of life. Throughwhat kind of marriage they choose, we can judge the personalities on the people. There are four couples getting married leaving me a great expression in this book but neither of them have same opinion for marriage. From their choice, we can easily see marriage means what for them. Love without romantics loses its own beautiful color as well.2.Historical BackgroundThe story happened at the end of 18th century and the start of 19th century and was called First Impression at beginning. At that time, the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century made women’s liberation possible, which provided a good condition for Jane Austen to create the book. There is no possibility for female to fight for their freedom and equality before and this was a rare chance for them to voice in the public.Besides, Economic Independence heightening made people start to care about humanity rather than the problem of food and clothing. More and more women have the right to accept education and realized that there is many unequal phenomenon in the society. The educated female began to turn to the liberation of women.Traditional beliefs of social and family roles of men and women began to change. As more female were educated and able to work outside, the roles of husband and wife may change. Female gradually became independent and could earn money as male, which made them proud and at same time, they wonder why female should accept unequal treatment now that they were as excellent as male. The pioneering women novelists such as Jane Austen broke out to a private world and entered into a public world. Female began to appear in the public and work on social contact just like male do. This made female more independent and realized that there is no need for female to attach to their husband. They can make a good living without the help of rich men and do the work by themselves. Therefore, more and more female came out to voice for their rights of freedom, equality and liberation. The appearance of Pride and Prejudice is exactly suitable for the society then and got a real hit when it was published. It really attracted people’s eyes and arouse them to rethink about humanity.3.1T he marriage of Jane and BingleyJane, the eldest daughter of , is beautiful, good-natured and elegant, which seems to be a great attraction for Bingley. Meanwhile, Bingley is in possession of a great fortune as well as handsome appearance and modest attitude. The combination of the two young people seems to be braw. However, their love is pure as we think? The answer is not of course. Although they fall in love with each other and get together, their marriage is set up on the appearance. There is no doubt that Jane is charming by her posture and behaviors, which draws the eyes of . After all, Jane lives in a family of developing a lady and her mother requires her to behave properly. His nice temperament sends forth from her body. Darcy, as a gentleman, has grown up in a wealthy family and become a young spark. Both of them possess so many common virtues: They are good-tempered and modest. Besides, their love both depends on appearance in some way. As long as they get older and the appearance changes a lot, the love can be everlasting? Everyone has a get-older day and when the day comes, the couple might be tired to each other and marriage may fall apart. They both have some weakness: Jane lacks strength and self-confidence and Bingley does not have his strong and determined disposition at all. It seems that the two youngers are similar to each other themselves. But it is lucky that Jane and Bingley can always receive considerate and beneficial advice from Elizabeth and Darcy. Thanks to Elizabeth’s kindness, Jane can pull through difficulties when Bingley left.Fortunately Bingley eventually came back and met with Jane, they two were together again.Nowadays our society has a phenomenon that young people are likely to choose those who look nice for their partners, which can be called “see the face of social”. There is no doubt that good look can feast others’ eyes. However, the true heart makes relationship stronger and deeper no matter how time flies. Just like a saying goes“A long journey proves the stamina of a horse and the passage of time tells the true from the false”! One’s heart can not be changed easily while their appearance changes in a short time as long as time goes. Therefore, you are supposed to judge whether your personality is suitable to the other if you need to have a partner in your life. Don’t care about their appearance because the heart will not change. Interesting souls meet with each other when their love comes and beautiful looks end up when timeflies. Like an old Chinese saying goes “appearance is easy to old while heart is hard to change”.The combination of Jane and Bingley is just like an enjoyable appreciation on their faces and falling love at first sight. We can’t say that this marriage is not timeless but this “love”based on appearance is terrifying. The result between Jane and Bingley remains a mystery to the reader and makes us wonder. Whether this marriage is suitable for young people at present in this society? Whether their marriage results from impulsion and sightless worship? Whether they would accompany a lifetime? Can the love based on appearance be long? This is a question deserved to be considered in current society.3.2T he marriage of Lydia and WickhamLydia is a rude girl with full of impulsion and passion. To be honest, she is frivolous to things and eager for social contact when she is a little girl of young age. She is likely to have contact with military officers in Meriton and proud of it. It is said that she is easily to be together with anyone if she is tantalized. Therefore her love to Wickham is just like a business of flesh and sexual passion. Her love comes with hotness like a windstorm. When she firstly meets with Wickham, she is attracted by his handsome appearance. However, Wickham is a man without good morality and he is so lexual and mean. This kind of man can be said “Satyr prodigal”and “speciosity”.Wickham has wanted to get together with and finally he failed. Therefore he turns to Lydia, the babyish and foolish girl. Their elopement is reallya shame for the family of . Luckily they get the help of and can liveby their own due to his kindness of a great fortune. The combination of Lydia and Wickham is just a marriage with lust and out of exploration to heterosexual feeling. Their elopement can be regarded as an immature behavior and it is amusing for all of us in their marriage. Their marriage is set up without any based on love, which can be said unpractical. The same point between the couple is that both of them like to squander without any control. Never considering the life of future, the postnuptial marriage is bound to be tough. Wickham gets what he wants—wealth under the help of Darcy and Lydia gets what she wants as well—satisfaction of erotic feeling from Wickham. The marriage is “best” for both of them. There are many other couples like them. The couples are just like kids themselves and they are not able to bring up a baby by themselves. It isa behavior without any responsibility and obligation. You can see manypeople get married at a young age and soon they divorce unfortunately, which makes the old generation feel curious and shocked. I wonder why it happens commonly. As a matter of fact, the young people are so young that they can not afford to set up a sense of responsibility to others, such as their parents, loved ones, workmates and strangers. Grown up in a white-headed family, the young generation tends to be self-centered and selfish, which is no benefit for them to live in a society of helping each other when they are adults. When you are likely to marry to someone, please consider what duties you shall have to do and what can you give to the other and don not ask for getting all the time. This is important in a marriage to balance. (Li Dapeng, 2015: 2)3.3T he marriage of Charlotte and CollinsCharlotte is a mundane woman without wealth or charming appearance. However she is full of “wisdom” and she thinks the marriage is happy or not depends on an opportunity you seize. Out of realistic consideration, she regards the marriage as a deal. When she meets with Collins at first, she does not like him at all. Charlotte praises that Collins is handsome and wise while she knows he is foolish in her eyes. Collins will come into a fortune of and he is a wealthy man soon, which makes Charlotte want to marry him.As a matter of fact, family background and social class are matched for marriage nowadays. Someone is forced to marry to a rich man but she does not love him at all. Some couples are broken up due to one’s being as poor as a church mouse. Can this kind of marriage make couples happy? I’m afraid not.For some poor girls, they are used to making a short and uptight living and eager to escape from present situation. Therefore, happiness means having a great deal of money and they would like to marry a rich man rather than a loved one instead. In the words of people now, “bread” and “love” are difficult to choose. In this society with full of materials and people are more likely to pay attention to exterior conditions. They are not certain whether they would get happiness or comfortability in the marriage but thisis the only chance for them to get away from poverty, which arouses others’sympathy and resonance. We can not easily say the girls’ choices are true or false, we can not accuse them of being greedy and vain. Because there is no qualification for us to judge others’behaviors and life if we have not experienced what they had experienced.Charlotte can get a sense of safety by getting the source of the economic and this sense is from Collins. Therefore, no matter how foolish and smarmy he is, she still thinks marriage is home to return. At the same time, Collins can get a warm family from her. The combination between the two is a best way for them.3.4T he marriage of Elizabeth and DarcyElizabeth and seemed to have some contradiction. Darcy was a young man with pride due to his glorious family background. With different growing environment, Elizabeth had prejudice to Darcy and said words with cold if necessary. However, exactly her extraordinariness, Darcy treated her with different eyes and gradually loved this girl. A Netherfield ball began. Elizabeth and Darcy talked about Wickham and she blamed that Wickham lost friendship of him. The two became embarrassed.Later, Bingley left the town and Jane was inconsolable. Elizabeth thought that was all Darcy’s false because of his instigation. At the same time, Darcy unburdened himself to Elizabeth and was refused by her.Luckily with the perseverance of Darcy and misunderstanding being untied, Elizabeth was moved by his courage and kindness to others. Therefore she loved the man deeply just like the man liked her.The love between Elizabeth and Darcy is so romantic and moving for all of readers, which is exactly our desire for love and marriage. The marriage of them seems to be unpractical but in fact is suitable for their personality. Elizabeth has a deep realization of marriage and love and therefore she refuses the proposal of Collins because she knows there is no affection base between her and Collins. Her view of marriage is based on love, only love. There is no need to treat marriage as a business in our lives and the view of Elizabeth is right for love choosing. All the things Elizabeth gets is deserved due to her pureness. Although she is not trapped in her mother’s desire of marrying a rich man, eventually she marries to a rich man who loves her deeply as well, which moved me a lot.Luckily Elizabeth finds a true love and gets a soulmate forever and in her marriage there is pure love!4.Views of the AuthorJane Austen is a progressive female writer and her original views on marriage expressed in her masterpiece Pride and Prejudice obviously have progressiveness. She saw that women had to obey men and depended on them to gain comfortable living conditions, which made her think it is unequal at all. In this sense, marriage was merely a decent way of survival for women. Women had few expectations of emotional feelings in theirmarriages. However she had a strong belief that marriage determined by economic and social status can not bring real happiness for women and only love can awake women’s life and happiness. In her work, she inspired female to pursue their love and keep energetic to marriage and do not give in to unequal family background just like Elizabeth who definitely got her love without any doubt and Elizabeth achieved her dream of marrying a man she really loved, which was exactly Jane Austen’s dream as well.5.ConclusionThere is a realistic problem in the novel what is different family background. No matter how time goes, people are more likely to match marriage with identification, social class, wealth or other corporeal things. In their eyes, they regard marriage as a business and are used to matching the marriage to other materials. As a matter of fact, marriage should be the loved ones get together forever in spite of other factors. No matter how rich, handsome, charming the other is, you shall stick to your own loved one in your heart and never give in to other people or society. In the novel, Elizabeth is so extraordinary due to her ignorance of Darcy’s wealth. She was not truckling like other girls who wanted to marry Darcy in order to get a great of possession. Exactly her pureness, love seemed to be gracious in her eyes, which attracted Darcy a lot.The true love is like this! No matter how poor you are, I’m with you just because I love you. However you shall pocket your pride and prejudice and treat me honestly. Just like a Chinese saying “Hold hands to me and grow old with you”. We are supposed to have the sweetest and best wishes to love. We shall meet with a great number of obstacles in the pursuit of love butkeeping an positive and persistent attitude. Stick to love and have a strong belief that true love will approach to you in the near future.6. Works sited:[1] Graff, Gerald. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at hertime and in modern time.In “pride and prejudice”, there is no twist polt as well heartquaking scene, reverse, as if the author only write it casually. But her lofty narrate technique is attracting many readers and essayists. The graceful dialog in the book plays an important role in the depiction of the characters.[参考资料]REFERENCE[1] Butler, Marilyn, Jane Austen and the War of Ideas, (Oxford: Clarendon ), 1975:216[2] Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, eds.
