(Brain training rules)our brain is like muscles. the more you use and exercise it, the stronger it becomes. but, if you want to get maximum results, you should do more than just practice. what you need is deliberate practice. deliberate practice is the kind of practice that stretches the boundaries of your capabilities. while in normal practice you just do the same activity again and again, in deliberate practice you push yourself to the limit. it’s not easy, but deliberate practice makes the difference between an expert and everyone else.the principle of deliberate practice can be applied in whatever field you want to excel in, but here i will focus on mind development. below are 8 ways to challenge and exercise your mind. choose some of them you haven’t done and take your mind to the next level:1. read challenging articlesyou can measure the difficulty level of an article by using google docs. here is how to do it:create a new documentpaste the content of the article to the new documentopen the tools -word count menu item. it will show you three metrics: flesch reading ease, flesch-kindcaid grade level, and automated readability index. the higher it is, the more difficult the article is.of course, it’s not necessary to measure the difficulty level of every article you read. simply take some samples from a blog or web site and you will have good idea about the difficulty level of the articles there.2. read challenging booksclassic books are good candidates since they are usually more difficult to read than new books. you could start with my list of classic books. you can also read the pulitzer-winning books.3. read academic journalsone form of challenging reading we often overlook is academic journals. there are a lot of free journal articles you can read from open science directory. some of the journal articles in google scholar are also free. go there, pick a topic of your interest and read a journal article.4. play mind gameschoose a free mind game to play and you can have fun while exercising your mind. i started playing sudoku last week and it was more difficult than i expected. but over time my mind got used to it and i can now solve the puzzles faster.5. aim to produce certain number of ideas everydaythe ideas can be in whatever fields you are working on. in my case, i try to write certain number of words everyday. q10 - which i first learned from dale - is an excellent tool you can use if you are a writer. one of its features is global target with which you can set the target number of words you want to write.6. brainstorm using thinking toolsthere are many thinking tools you can use. the book thinkertoys has many of them in one book and the web site exploratree has a collection of tools you can use.7. do ultradian sprintdoing ultradian sprint is a good way to train your focus and concentration. one trait of a well-trained brain is the ability to concentrate for long time and ultradian sprint can help you increase your ability to concentrate.8. set a projectis there a project that has been in the back of your mind for some time? perhaps you postpone it because you think it’s too difficult. well, that’s a good candidate for deliberate practice. often we are afraid of failure, but a mantra to quick progress is to make mistakes and make them quick. this way you will have a short feedback loop that will help you adjust your performance faster.as i wrote in the beginning of this article, a key of deliberate practice is to push your current limit of ability. these challenges will stretch your boundary when you first do them, but after some time, you will get comfortable with it and it will no longer be deliberate practice. here are some things you can do to keep making them deliberate practice:1. for reading, try reading something in an unfamiliar field or read more challenging materials in the same field.2. for playing mind games, increase the level of difficulty or try a new game you are not familiar with.3. for producing certain number of ideas everyday, increase the target number or the quality of the ideas.4. for doing ultradian sprint, increase the duration of the session.5. for thinking challenge, try more difficult challenges.6. for setting project, increase the scope of the project or do similar projects with stricter deadline.do you have tips or thoughts on mind exercise? i would love to hear them.。

In a university commencement address several years ago, Brian Dyson, CEO of Coca Cola Enterprises, spoke of the relation of work to one’s other commitm ents:Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life. How?Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.Don’t set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as they would be your life, for without them, life is meaningless.Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live ALL the days of your life.Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us to each together.Don’t be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going.Don’t forget, a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.Don’t be a fraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.Don’t use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery and Today is a gift: that’s why we call it ‘The Present’.

5Simple Ways to Increase Your Intelligence五招使你更聪明作者:John Wesley翻译:周玉亮Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if you never use your brain,or abuse it with harmful chemicals, your ability to think and learn will deteriorate. Here are5simple ways anyone can squeeze a bit more productivity out of the old gray matter.1.Minimize Television Watching第一招:减少电视时间This is a hard sell.People love vegetating in front of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity OR allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise.Don’t you feel drained after a couple hours of TV?Your eyes are sore and tired from being focused on the light box for so long. You don’t even have the energy to read a book. When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.2.Exercise第二招:进行体育锻炼I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time ing your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy.Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate more easily.3.Read Challenging Books第三招:阅读经典作品Many people like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus.Reading a classic novel can change your view of theworld and will make you think in more precise, elegant English.Don’t be afraid to look upa word if you don’t know it,and don’t be afraid of dense passages.Take your time,re-readwhen necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style.Once you get used to reading challenging books,I think you’ll find that you aren’t tempted to go back to page-turners.The challenge of learning new ideas is far more exciting than any tacky suspense-thriller.4.Early to Bed,Early to Rise第四招:坚持早睡早起Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than sleep deprivation. You’ll be most rejuvenated if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than8hours.If you stay up late and compensate by sleeping late, you’ll wake up lethargic and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most tranquil and productive.Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes your mental acuity all day.If you have the opportunity,take10-20minute naps when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness.Anything longer will make you lethargic, but a short nap will refresh you.5.Take Time to Reflect第五招:适时独处沉思Often our lives get so hectic that we become overwhelmed without even realizing it.It becomes difficult to concentrate because nagging thoughts keep interrupting.Spending some time alone in reflection gives you a chance organize your thoughts and prioritizeyour responsibilities.Afterwards, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s important and what isn’t.The unimportant stuff won’t bother you anymore and your mind will feel less encumbered.I’m not saying you need to sit on the floor cross-legged and chant‘ommm’.Anything that allows a bit of prolonged solitude will do.One of my personal favorites is taking a solitary walk.Someone famous said,“All the best ideas occur while walking.”I think he was on to something.Experiment to find the activity that works best for you.ConclusionI hope you aren’t disappointed that none of the techniques I’ve proposed are revolutionary. But simple, unexciting answers are often the most valid. The challenge is having the willto adhere to them.If you succeed in following these5tips,you’ll be rewarded with increased mental acuity and retention of knowledge。

It is the novel and complex that will challenge the brain, stimulate learning, and promote synaptic density, decreasing the likelihood that neurodegenerative disease will manifest. Withpractice of an activity or skill, your synaptic density increases, and what was once novel and complex can easily become rote and passive. Therefore, continually learning new things will ensureyour brain is always expanding and staying sharp!

Instead, a raft of recent studies, aided by brain-imaging technology, all point to a much different conclusion: Our grey matter can keep on regenerating throughout life, producing new active cells all the time. "Your brain is a living and constantly developing dense forest with billions of neurons and synapses, " says Alvaro Fernandez, founder and CEO of market research firm SharpBrains.
The emerging science of neuroplasticity, which studies how our brains change and adapt, is revealing that, as with muscles, it's a case of "use it or lose it, " he adds. "Once new neurons appear in your brain, where they stay and how long they survive depends on how you use them."
Fernandez is co-author of a book called The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness that boils down the current explosion of new research in this area to specific advice on what to do now to guard against Alzheimer's and other forms of cognitive impairment later on.
1. Never stop learning. The latest research shows conclusively that, the better educated a person is, the less likely she is to suffer from age-related decline. "Highly educated people are likely to have mentally stimulating jobs, " Fernandez notes, and that fosters the birth of new neurons. If you get into the habit of learning new skills throughout your career -- which also happens to make you more marketable and promotable -- your brain will thank you later.
If you can, volunteer for overseas gigs, too. Not only do these make your resume stand out from the crowd, but "exploring and adjusting to new locations forces you to pay more attention to your environment" than staying home, Fernandez notes. Navigating an unfamiliar culture, even for a short time, is like calisthenics for your brain.
5 Ways To Protect Your Brain, And Boost Your Career
Not so long ago, conventional wisdom among neuroscientists held that the human brain was doomed to deteriorate with the passage of time, and there wasn't much anyone could do about it.
3. Seek out tough "stretch" assignments. "The goal is to be exposed to novelty and increasing levels of challenge, so the task never becomes too easy or routine, " Fernandez writes, adding that this means "expending effort and getting out of your comfort zone." Variety is as important as challenge, several new studies show: "Excessive specialization is not the best strategy for maintaining long-term brain health. A bond trader may thus want to try an artistic activity, to stimulate brain cells that he or she rarely uses otherwise."
4. Manage stress. "Excessive stress, no matter whether induced by external events or by your own thoughts, actually kills neurons and prevents the formation of new ones, " Fernandez notes. Obviously, you don't want that. The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness goes into detail on how physical exercise, meditation, and even having a good laugh help to protect your brain from the ravages of too much pressure, while heading off job burnout too. Taking a real vacation once in a while is also a proven stress fighter.
2. Immerse yourself in another culture. In particular, learn another language. As U.S. business (especially marketing) becomes ever more bilingual, Spanish would be smart -- but, for the ultimate brain workout, pick Russian, Mandarin, or Arabic, whose different alphabets make them that much more challenging.
