And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料).The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger themanure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter. As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour ,the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house.Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn't look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn't offend the nose so much ,either.I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition ,but it was surprisingly edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup!24.Why did Dad clean Old Man McColgin's chicken house regularly? He didn't have food ,water ,a phone ,or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.Nicholas had no idea where he was.He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he hadwatched on TV .It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put.The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow.If he didn't ,his body temperature would get very low ,which could quickly kill him.Using his skis ,Nicholas built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself ,like a blanket ,to stay as warm as he could.By that evening ,Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last ,Nicholas did the only thing he could —he huddled(蜷缩)in his cave and slept. The next day ,Nicholas went out to look for help ,but he could't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave ,because without shelter ,he could die that night. On Tuesday ,Nicholas went out again to find help.He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in thesnow,Nicholas was saved.Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs.Wild.That's where he learned the tips that saved his life.In each episode(一期节目)of Man vs. Wild,Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas'amazing deeds,he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.27.What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?A.He got lost. B.He broke his skis. C.He hurt his eyes. D.He caught a cold.28.How did Nicholas keep himself warm?A.He found a shelter. B.He lighted some branches. C.He kept on skiing. Here are some discoveries from health experts. Many studies looking into the lives of centenarians(百岁老人) look at what they eat. Many people who live into their hundreds live in the Mediterranean [medtəreni:ən] (地中海), so their diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, gets a lot of attention. The diet has been linked to a healthier older age, lower risk for heart disease, and even protection against memory loss.Education is related to a longer life. A 2012 report from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics found that peo ple with a bachelor’s degree or higher live about nine years longer than people who don’t graduate high school. James Smith, a health economist at the RAND Corporation, is also a supporter of the argumentfor staying in school for better life expectancy. His findings show education should be an even bigger factor than race and income. Educated people are more likely to land better jobs, plan for their future, and make healthier lifestyle choices.Being a hard worker doesn’t necessarily mean job-stress will harm you. The Longevity [lɔndʒeviti] 长寿Study found that plenty of hard workers lived long lives. “Skeptics(怀疑者) may wonder if hard workers really are enjoying life.” the authors write, “We found that productive, hardworking people (even in old age) are not stressed or miserable, but tend to be happier, healthier, and more socially connected than their less productive peers.”Having a strong social group is associated with a longer life. We often turn to friends and family for support, and taking care of the people that matter to us may help us take better care of ourselves, some evidence shows. Some research even suggests that immune(免疫) function is improved when we are around our friends, and that they help with stress management.Research shows that sitting for long period of time put people at risk for shorter lifespans and other health risks. A 2011 study found that each hour people spent sitting down and watching TV after age 25 was linked to 22 minutes from their overall life expectancy.31. The second paragraph mainly tells us that_______.A. People attach great importance to a long lifeB. Diet matters a lot to a long lifeC. Fruits and vegetables benefit healthD. Life styles play a role in health32. According to James Smith, which makes the greatest difference to a long life?A. RaceB. IncomeC. EducationD. Diet33. From the fourth paragraph, we know_____.A. Hard workers suffer from greater stressB. Less productive workers tend to be happier and healthierC. Nobody doubts that hard workers really are enjoying lifeD. Hard workers are likely to enjoy a longer life34. According to the passage, in order to live a long life, we should_________.A. sit still frequently and have a good restB. find a job after middle school and work hardC. be social and make more friendsD. settle down in the Mediterranean35. The passage is mainly about ________.A. diet and healthB. some discoveries on healthC. the value of good educationD. the secret of a happy life第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。

Note that there is one word more than you need. The nursing assistant for your next trip to the hospital might be a robot. This is the implication of research recently published by Dr. Elena De Momi and colleagues in the open access journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI (Artificial Intelligence).Dr. De Momi, of the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), led an international team that trained a robot to imitate natural human actions. De Momi's work indicates that humans and robots can 1. ______ coordinate their actions during high-stakes events such as surgeries.Over time this should lead to improvements in safety during surgeries because unlike their human counterparts robots do not tire and can complete an endless series of 2._____ movements. The goal is not to remove human expertise from the operating room, but to 3.______ it with a robot's particular skills and benefits."As a roboticist, I am convinced that robotic (co)workers and collaborators will definitely change the work market, but they won't steal job opportunities. They will just allow us to decrease workload and achieve better performances in several tasks, from medicine to industrial 4.________," De Momi explains. To conduct their experiment De Momi's team photographed a human being 5.______ numerous reaching motions, in a way similar to handing instruments to a surgeon. These camera 6._________ were input into the neural network of the robotic arm, which is crucial to controlling movements. Next a human operator guided the robotic arm in imitating the reaching motions that the human subject had 7.__________ performed. Although there was not a perfect overlap between the robotic and human actions, they were broadly similar. Finally, several humans observed as the robotic arm made numerous motions. These observers 8.__________ whether the actions of the robotic arms were "biologically inspired," which would indicate that their neural networks had effectively learned to imitate human behavior. About 70% of the time this is exactly what the human observers 9.___________.These results are promising, although further research is necessary to 10.__________ or refine De Momi's conclusions. If robotic arms can indeed imitate human behavior, it would be necessary to build conditions in which humans and robots can cooperate effectively in high stress environments like operating rooms.III. But Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seems to have discovered a goldmine – his socks. He’s been seen wearing “statement socks” at many public events. For example, during a NATO meeting in Brussels in May, Trudeau wore one blue sock and one pink, both with the NATO symbol printed on them. And in June, he wore a pair of socks with the pattern of maple leaves – a national symbol of Canada – when he appeared on a TV show. The New York Times’ editor Vanessa Friedman praised Trudeau’s play on his socks as “clever”.“[Socks] are subtle enough not to be distracting, but visible enough that you can’t miss the point,” she wrote. “Rarely have a man’s ankles said so much.”But not all the playful socks that Trudeau wears send some kind of political message – some of them are just for fun.One example is a pair he wore during a meeting with Enda Kenny, then the prime minister of Ireland, in Montreal on May 4. During their meeting, Trudeau wore Star Wars socks – simply because that day happened to be International Star Wars Day. If this pair of socks sent out any message, according to Vogue magazine reporter Emily Farra, that message was “just that he has a quirky side and loves George Lucas films,” she wrote. However, some say that 45-year-old Trudeau’s unusual sock choices show a childish side of the primeBut Friedman doesn’t see it that way. “The socks have been a source of pride and applause on an international scale – a symbol both of Mr Trudeau’s ability to embrace multiculturalism and of his position as a next-generation leader not bound by old traditions,” she wrote. “[They have] opened up possibilities for the future.”1.Trudeau wore a pair of socks with the pattern of maple leaves to___________A.distracted audience’s attention from the TV showB.send a message that he is proud of his countryC.narrow the gap between politician and civiliansD.claim that he is the new-generation leader of the country2.The underlined word “ quirky” is closet in meaning to________A.abnormalB.seriousC.enthusiasticD.odd3.According to Friedman, Justin Trudeau__________A.has a promising future but still an experienced politicianed a clever way to explore and finally discovered a goldmineC.is open-minded and is ready to accept different culturesD.is a leader who has abandoned old traditions to build up his future4.The article is mainly about__________A.the strange hobby of a young politicianB. a young leader’s clever choice of socksC.how male politicians maintain public imageD.the gender difference in modern politicians(B)● CAFÉ DISPLAY● OUR JOURNEYS● 12 April-29 May 2008Young people explore how they have adapted to life in Oxford.“When I first came here,” says one young African woman, “I just wanted to cry all the time. ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHERS(C)Researchers in the field of psychology have found that one of the best ways to make an important decision, such as choosing a university to attend or a business to invest in, involves the utilization of a decision worksheet. Psychologists who study optimization ( 最优化) compare the actual decisions ma de by people to theoretical ideal decisions to see how similar they are. Proponents (支持者) of the wor ksheet procedure believe that it will yield optimal, that is, the best decisions. Although there are several variations on the exact format that worksheets can take, they are all similar in their essential aspects. Worksheets require defining the problem in a clear and concise way and then listing all possible solutio ns to the problem. Next, the pertinent (相关的) considerations that will be affected by each decision ar e listed, and the relative importance of each consideration or consequence is determined. Each considera tion is assigned a numerical value to reflect its relative importance. A decision is mathematically calcul ated by adding these values together. The alternative with the highest number of points emerges as thebest decision.Since most important problems are multifaceted (多层面的), there are several alternatives to choose from, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits of a pencil and paper decisio n-making procedure is that it permits people to deal with more variables than their minds can generally comprehend and remember. On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once.A worksheet can be especially useful when the decision involves a large number of variables with co mplex relationships. A realistic example for my college students is the question "What will I do after g raduation?" A graduate might seek a position that offers specialized training, pursue an advanced degre e, or travel abroad for a year.A decision-making worksheet begins with succinct (简洁的) statement of the problem that will als o help to narrow it. It is important to be clear about the distinction between long-range and immediate goals because long-range goals often involve a different decision than short-range ones. Focusing on lon g-range goals, a graduating student might revise the question above to "What will I do after graduation that will lead to a successful career?"1. Of the following steps is the one that occurs before the others in making a decision worksheet. A.listing the consequences of each solutionB.calculating a numerical summary of each solutionC.writing down all possible solutionsD.deciding which consequences are most important2. According to decision-worksheet theory, an optimal decision is defined as one that__________. A.has the fewest variables to considerB.uses the most decision worksheetsC.has the most points assigned to itD.is agreed to by the greatest number of people3. The author develops the discussion in paragraph 1 by means of__________.A.describing a processB.classifying different typesC.providing historical backgroundD.explaining a theory4. The passage mainly discusses __________.A.a tool to assist in making complex decisionsB.a comparison of actual decisions and ideal decisionsC.research on how people make decisionsD.differences between making long-range and short-range decisionsSection CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Your clients and colleagues don’t have time to engage fully with every e-mail they get. Some of them receive hundreds of m essages per day. That’s why they start with the ones they can deal with quickly. They may never get around to answering — or even reading — the rest.So how do you earn their attention? Try these tips:Stick to standard capitalization and punctuation. Conventions of good writing may seem like a waste of time for e-mail, especially when you’re tapping out messages on a handheld device. But it’s a matter of getting things right —the little things. Even if people in your group don’t capitalize or punctuate in their messages, stand out as someone who does. 1. __________________________________________And their abbreviated style can be confusing. It takes less time to write a clear message the first time around than it does to follow up to explain what you meant to say.Be brief — but not too brief. 2. _________________________________The more they have to scroll or swipe, the less receptive they’ll be to your message. They’ll probably just skim it and miss important details — or skip it altogether. So rarely compose more than a single screen of reading. Focus your content, and tighten your language. But as you’re trimming the fat from your message, keep the meat intact. When giving a project update, for example, supply enough background information to orient your readers. Consider your message from their perspective. They aren’t as immersed in your project as you are, and they probably have many other things going on. So remind them where things stood when you last sent an update, and describe what’s happened sinc e then.3. _________________________________Before hitting “Send,” check your subject line. If it’s generic or blank, your message will get lost in your recipient’s overstuffed inbox. Are you asking someone to take action? Highlight that in the subject line. Make your request easy to find — and fulfill.Copy people judiciously. Include only those who will immediately grasp why they’re on the thread; don’t automatically click on “Reply All.” Your correspondent may have been over inclusive with the “Copy” list, and if you repeat that mistake, you’ll continue to annoy the recipients who shouldn’t be there.4. _____________________________________________IV. Summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Tired of all the pushing in supermarkets? Fed up with waiting in endless lines to pay for what you have bought? Angry at wasting time in traffic jams only to find no parking spaces when you eventually arrive at the store? If this is you, then online shopping is the answer to your dreams of trouble-free shopping.Online shopping brings its own challenges. Here are a few things to bear in mind when browsing (浏览) various websites. The claim (声称) made by online sites is that shopping online is a safe and secure way to make purchases. The evidence challenges this. In any case, you only have to be the victim (受害者) of fraud(欺骗) once to experience all the problems that come with this form of stealing. Use only sites that have a trusted history and an excellent reputation(名声).Another problem is that the appearance of items in reality is often quite different from what you see on your computer screen. This might not be a problem if you are buying washing up powder but could be a major disappointment when that beautiful blue dress you ordered turns up in green. Also, product descriptions are sometimes simply untrue! Perhaps the wisest plan is to purchase items whose design and color are not essential to customer satisfaction. Some even argue that online shopping indirectly contributes to global warming. Yes, your car can stay parked but how are online goods delivered? Often by some large van pouring out carbon monoxide and adding to our already desperate traffic problems. You are also by now becoming increasingly irritated (使烦恼) by the fact that the delivery is late !第II卷(共40分)I. Of course, most people never change their names even if they feel(31)_____ about them. However, some people do take this course of(32)______--particularly artists! What makes an artist want to change their name? Sometimes it’s for purely(33)______reasons, such as the Nobel Prize winning poet from Chile, Neftali Reyes. He didn’t want his father to know he was writing poems, so he changed his name to Pablo Nenda when he was a young man. At other times the reason may appear(34)______; take the case of Portuguese poet Femando Pessoa, who wrote under 75 different names. The reason? “When I use a different name, I always write in a different way,”he explained. In most cases, however, people do it for social, historical, political, or cultural reasons. Here are some of the most common:The person’s name is just too long and difficult to remember. Let’s be honest, Madonna Louise Ciccone is not as easy to remember as just(35)______ “Madonna”. And short names are easier to remember. William Bradley became Brad Pitt and Edson Arantes do Nascimento became Pele.Sometimes names are changed for marketing purpose. For example, if a name sounds to foreign, it may bechanged to something that is more(36)______in a market. So in the film world. Ramon Estevez(37)______the name Martin Sheen. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. We’ve tried shopping, making money and spending it, but we’re still miserable. What’s missing from our lives?Money(41)______makes most of us happy. Poor people, (42)______,see their life satisfaction rise with income but for most of the population in a country as rich as ours, any jump-start to well-being from a pay rise quickly wears off. “I was window shopping in the south of France recently and I saw a woolly hat decorated with diamond, and I quite fancied it.” When we get to that stage we should realize that more money isn’t getting us more in terms of(43)______.But what about health? Surely the virtual (44)______of most fatal disease, rising life expectancy and falling death rates should be sheering us up? Not a bit of it. All that happens is that our expectations rise just as or even more quickly. (45)______, our health is better on almost every count, but this doesn’t translate into our feeling any healthier. We are more aware of our health, so we get more(46)______it. Medicine has become a victim of its own success: having massively reduced the chances of death in childbirth, for example, people are now shocked if a life is lost--and reach for a lawyer. Death was inevitable--now it’s (47)______.Like the answer to many great problems, however, the answer to the question of happiness may be quite plain: once countries and households are free of material need, the biggest(48)_____ to life satisfaction seems to be a healthy set of personal relationship. The relative happiness of late teenagers and those passing middle age may relate to their spending more time on friendships. The thirty somethings, (49)______on the two fronts of work and children, are the most frustrated. Those between full-time education and (50)______may be spending more time on the activities they think will make them happy--earning and spending--than on those that(51)______will: spending time with friends and family. The friend-shaped gap(52)______the American paradox--why the residents of the richest nation in the world are so unhappy--according to Professor Robert E. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, and C, D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A )We went to the B.T Blackstone Library, not far from Lake Michigan, once a week. You could easily miss the building if you didn’t know what you were looking for. But once you were inside, you could never mistake it for anything else. We passed through two sets of heavy brass doors to the lobby of the library. And if we turned right then, we could see an alcove with tables; this led, in turn, to a big reading room with a great and ancient globe that sat in front of the largest windows. At some time during every visit I found my way into that room to touch the globe. I liked to look at Africa, with the coded colors of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights. I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle, arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show.On Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section. I saw a title: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I could tell from looking at the shelf that she’d written a lot of books, but I didn’t know anything about her.I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home, and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in a week. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs:“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.“It’s so dreadful to be poor” sighed Med, looking down at her old dress.“I don’t think it’s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all” added little Amy, with an injured sniff.“We have got Father and Mother and each other.” said Beth contentedly from her corner. It was a thing I had decided on some other books to take home, because I didn’t look through the rest of the section that day. I read and read and read Little Women it was time to walk home, and expect for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating, I wouldn’t put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo. It seemed to me a shame that she wasn’t Black: then our similarity would be complete. She loved to read, she loved to make up plays, she hated acting ladylike, she had a dreadful temper. I had found a kindred spirit.56.What can be learned about the author’s father according to Paragraph 1?A.He was uncomfortable discussing politics with his children.B.He had strong feelings about the Civil Rights movement.C.He didn’t approve of most news covered on TV.D.He generally had a pessimistic world view.57.It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that the author is most likely to agree______.A.books seem duller when read in libraries than when read at home.B.interesting books are often very dull in their first few paragraphs.C.novels are usually more interesting than nonfiction works.D.book titles can sometimes be misleading.58.The author quotes some lines from Little Women as part of a larger attempt to______.A.convey the impact of an unexpected discovery.B.Describe a young reader’s sense of history.C.Illustrate the suddenness of a decision.D.Explain a child’s misunderstanding.59.The author lists several things about Jo primarily to______.A.challenge an interpretationB. highlight some differencesC. stress a comparisonD. develop a disapproving opinion(B)A http://cnnsf/Fantastic site from CNN. We mean both the Oscar telecast, which ran as long as Gone With the Wind(though with fewer important roles for African Americans), and the three-month death march of critics’ citations, guild(行业) awards and expert opinions on who’d win. In case you nodded off, Birdman took Best Picture and Director, and the acting prizes went to Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything. Julianne Moore for Still Alice, J.K. Simmons for Whiplash and Patricia Arquette for Boyhood--four folks whom most people know from the speeches they gave, not the movies they were in.This year, the only big hit among the eight Best Picture finals was American Sniper. The other seven were art-house films. You see, there is Hollywood, which makes movies the whole world watches, and there is off-Hollywood, which hatches the films that get Oscars. Somebody has to ask: Why does Hollywood hate what it does for a living? It can be as simple as “films” are great and “movies” are rubbish. On the Rotten Tomatoes website, which shows the reviews of dozens of critics. Birdman pulled a 93 rating(out of 100) and The Imitation Game an 89. But some popular hits also scored with the critics: 91 for Guardians of the Galaxy, 89 for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 88 for Gone Girl and a dramatic 96 for The Lego Movie. Audiences liked these four films too, paying more than 51 billion to see them in North American theaters(plus another 1.3 billion dollars abroad). So why weren’t at least a couple of these films nominated for Best Pictures? Maybe simply because they were popular. They got their awards as cash prizes, not Oscar statuettes. The Oscar winners have become a category of little films about big diseases. Another disconnect between Oscar voters and moviegoers: ages. The average age of the 6.7000 Academy members is about 60, and they see most of the nominated films on screeners at home. Basically, they want movies to be television: educating, intimate dramas. The stories they respond to are not of youngsters on grand quests--the action film--but of unsung heroes battling weakness and approaching death. The very first Oscar party, in 1929, had two Best Picture categories: one for “outstanding picture” (William Wellman’s spectacle Wings), the other for “unique and artistic picture”(E.W Mumau’s masterpiece Sunrise). Maybe the Academy, obsessed with indie(独立制片的) artistry, should return to the double award. Then Avatar could win along with The Hurt Locker, and Gravity with 12 Years a Slave, even the new Star Wars might have a shot.63.It can be inferred from the last sentence of Paragraph 1 that______.A.not many people saw the four films.B.the four films won the awards as expected.C.awards shouldn’t be given to the four people.D.the four actors and actresses made great speeches.64.Why does the author mention these films in Paragraph 2?A.To illustrate the great films that are worth watching.B.To explain why some films are given a higher score than others.C.To illustrate there are films welcomed by both viewers and critics.D.To highlight the importance of turning to critics’ reviews when choosing films.65.Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with?A.Less emphasis should be given to moviegoers’ opinions about films.B.Oscar voters are unsung heroes fighting against weakness.C.Being popular may prevent a film winning Oscar awards.D.It’s better to see a film in the cinema than at home.66.What suggestion does the author give about Oscar award.A.Having more independent film makers nominated for awards.B.Setting up an award for the films different from present winners.C.Improving the standard for outstanding films.D.Giving more chances to the greatest hits.Section CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.Getting dressed for the officeIt’s clear that business wear has changed in the last few years--for both men and women. Even traditional business such as law companies have altered their dress codes from “smart” to “smart-casual”. (67)______. What is less clear, however, is what “smart-casual” actually means. I hope to give you a few basic tips here. There are many factors involved: for example, the particular industry you work in, how much contact you have with the public and your position in the company. The seasons even have a part to play--what is acceptable in the summer might not be in the autumn or winter. So, does “smart-casual” mean you can come to work in tracksuit bottoms and sandals, or does it just mean that you don’t have to wear a tie? (68)______. Fashionable colors for suits for both men and women this season are still the traditional grey, dark blue and black. You see someone wearing grey and it indicates a conservative, professional image; dark blue says you’re trustworthy; and black always looks smart and classy. These colors don’t have to look boring, however. Try wearing a shirt or blouse with a splash of color. Pale blue, pink or lilac are better than loud colors like bright pink and dark red.(69)______. Men can go for a sports-type jacket, with a shirt or smart jumper. You can wear well-cut trousers made of wool, or a good pair of chinos. Women can wear trouser suits or skirt suits. You can also wear more fashionable trousers and a blouse, or a skirt and top. But be careful; avoid wearing baggy, loose clothes, very short skirts and lots of logos and patterns. If in doubt, go back to the suit. You need a similar attitude to jewellery, bags and other accessories; you should try to resist large earrings and huge, colorful bags. (70)______.Section DDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 90 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Dear Sir/Madam,I am writing with reference to the article entitled “Everything’s jut perfect, thanks!” which appeared in the June issue of your magazine. Following a discussion of the article in our English class, I have been chosen to express our disagreement with some of the views contained in the article.First of all, we find it difficult to believe that such a large number of people are satisfied with the education system and with their working conditions. This is certainly not the case here, where many people have complaintsabout the poor standards of education. In fact, lack of job satisfaction is known to be among the greatest causes of stress in this country.Secondly, it certainly is not true that most people are happy with public transport, either in our cities or in the the country. Furthermore, one of the most commonly heard complaints is that there are insufficient buses and trains to serve on ever-increasing population. It’s a well-known fact that our public transport system is seriously under-funded and our roads are heavily crowded. And, as far as city life is concerned, a significant percentage would move if they had the opportunity. Finally, we feel it is unrealistic of you to claim that most people have enough money to live on. Were this so, we would have none of the financial problems faced by most people and widespread poverty would not be an issue. To conclude, we found your article to be extremely inaccurate in its assessment of living conditions. Since your magazine claims to represent students from all over the world, we look forward to reading more objective reporting in future issues.Yours faithfully,Mark Wiseman第II卷I. Dennis, 14, entered and won a new Gibson guitar. Tad Kubler, the lead guitarist for the Hold Steady, who was involved in the contest, then invited Dennis to perform with the band as it closed its set.''Having your cellphone everywhere is important for everybody now,'' Dennis said. ''I never dreamed of playing Lollapalooza.'' The modern mobile phone -- equipped with camera, Internet access and more -- has proved to be a liability for some performers, like Akon and Beyonc? whose regrettable moments were captured by fans and then immortalized on YouTube and similar sites. All the wise heads agree: there are no quick or easy answers. There is work to be done, but workers aren’t ready to do it —they’re in the wrong places, or they have the wrong skills. Our problems are “structural,” and will take many years to solve. But don’t bother asking for evidence that justifies this bleak view. There isn’t any. On the contrary, all the facts suggest that high unemployment in America is the result of inadequate demand —full stop. Saying that there are no easy answers sounds wise, but it’s actually foolish: our unemployment crisis could be cured very quickly if we had the intellectual clarity and political will to act.In other words, structural unemployment is a fake problem, which mainly serves as an excuse for not pursuing real solutions. The fact is that Job openings have plunged in every major sector, while the number of workers forced into part-time employment in almost all industries has soared. Unemployment has surged in every major occupational category. Only three states, with a combined population not much larger than that of Brooklyn, have unemployment rates below 5 percent. So all the evidence contradicts the claim that we’re mainly suffering from structural unemployme nt. Why, then, has this claim become so popular?Part of the answer is that this is what always happens during periods of high unemployment —in part because pundits and analysts believe that declaring the problem deeply rooted, with no easy answers, makes them sound serious.I’ve been looking at what self-proclaimed experts were saying about unemployment during the Great Depression; it was almost identical to what Very Serious People are saying now. Unemployment cannot be brought down rapidly, declared on e 1935 analysis, because the work force is “unadaptable and untrained. It cannot respond to the opportunities which industry may offer.” A few years later, a large defense buildup finally provided a fiscal stimulus adequate to the economy’s needs —and sud denly industry was eager to employ those “unadaptable and untrained” workers. But now, as then, powerful forces are ideologically opposed to the whole idea of government action on a sufficient scale to jump-start the economy. And that, fundamentally, is why claims that we face huge structural problems have been proliferating: they offer a reason to do nothing about the mass unemployment that is crippling our economy and our society. So what you need to know is that there is no evidence whatsoever to back these claims. We aren’t suffering from a shortage of needed skills; we’re suffering from a lack of policy resolve. As I said, structural unemployment isn’t a real problem, it’s an excuse —a reason not to act on America’s problems at a time when action is desperately needed.63. What does the author think is the root cause of mass unemployment in America?A. Corporate mismanagementB. Workers’ slow adaptationC. Technological advanceD. Insufficient demand64. What does the author say helped bring down unemployment during the Great Depression?A. The wise heads’ benefit package.B. Nationwide training of workersC. The booming defense industryD. Through restructuring of industries.65. What has caused claims of huge structural problems to multiply?A. Very Serious People ‘s attempt to cripple the economyB. Powerful opposition to government’s stimulus efforts.C. Evidence gathered from many sectors of the industries.D. Economists’ failure to detect the problems in time.66. What is the aut hor’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To testify the experts’ analysis of America’s problems.B. To show the urgent need for the government to take action.C. To offer a feasible solution to the structural unemploymentD. To alert American workers to the urgency for adaptationSection CDirections: complete the following passage by using the sentenced given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.A. Another function of scannable chips in clothing could be the ability to find out more information about the product,B. High-tech clothes will be a bestseller of IT times.C. Through smart connected devices in our homes, our shopping needs will be anticipated and taken care of.E. But what if it could soon be our clothing itself that has internet connect ability?F. it isn't just a dream - internet-connected clothes are already being made but are yet to go mainstream.Wearable technology is nothing new - activity trackers and smart watches are now as ubiquitous as trainers and glasses. _______67________ In the not too distant future, it's highly likely that our clothes will be almost as smart as our phones.Given we’ve survived just fine for millennia with the clothes we have now , you might wondering what the point of connected clothing would be. Well, imagine if when you put a jacket in the washing machine, a chip in the jacket automatically puts the machine on the right laundry setting, making life just that little bit easier. ____________68_____________For instance, how it was designed, its sustainability and even a playlist made by the brand.Whilst none of these functions are things we need, the hope is that they'll enhance our clothing and the experience that goes with wearing it. _______69_______One company leading the way is clothing care label manufacturer Avery Dennison, who have teamed up with fashion label Rochambeau and Everything to create a bomber jacket with a personalized QR code. The code in the chip then gives the wearer a number of perks such as entry to exclusive clubs, special menus at certain restaurants and a ticket to Rochambeau's next runway show. But internet-connected clothing isn't the only way fashion is combining with technology - programmatic commerce, a concept developed by global ecommerce consultancy Salmon, is set to change the way we buy clothes._________70________ For example, before you've even realised you've run out of tights, your favorite onlineretailer has automatically re-ordered some new ones for you based on your repurchasing patterns and an estimation of the average life cycle of your tights. So with connected clothing and homes, it may soon be that when it comes to fashion, we barely have to think about anything at all.II. An honest assessment of personal interests and abilities such as creative skills, or skills acquired from work experience, should also be given careful thought. The second stage is to study the opportunities which are available for employment. To do this, graduates can study job and position information in newspapers, or they can pay a visit to a careers office, write to friends or relatives who may already be involved in a particular profession. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers.Good personal personal is essential in the search for a good career. Knighthood was taken quite seriously and had to be earned. At about the age of eight, a boy would begin training in preparation for knighthood. This young trainee, known as a page(男侍者), would train with mentors to learn about horses, armor, and weapons. Pages practiced fighting with a sword against a wooden stake and learned to skillfully use a bow and arrow. The lady of the castle taught a young page about manners and social graces, as well as how to sing, play instruments, and dance. A priest might give a page religious training and teach him to read and write.By the age of fourteen, the page would become a squire(护卫). A squire was responsible for dressing a knight for battles and tournaments and taking care of the knight's armor and weapons. He would even follow his master on the battlefield to protect him if the knight fell.A squire had to gain skill in using a lance, spear, or sword, so he would practice against a wooden dummy called a quintain(枪靶). The quintain and a shield were hung on a wooden pole, and when hit, the whole structure would spin. The squire would learn to ride up and hit the shield's center, but then quickly move out of the way without getting hit and knocked off his horse by the quintain. At about age twenty, a squire was finally prepared to be called a knight, which involved an extended ceremony. On the evening before becoming a knight, the squire confessed his sins to a priest, was given a symbolic bath, and then fasted in order to cleanse his soul. The squire would dress all in white and stay in a chapel all night praying and watching over hisweapons and armor. In the morning, the squire would dress in symbolically-colored clothing: red for his blood, white for purity, and brown for his return to the earth after death. At his induction ([in'dʌkʃən] 入会仪式), the knight swore a code of chivalry, which required him always to be brave, loyal, courteous, and to protect the defenseless. Knighthood was granted by the overlord with an accolade, during which the new knight was tapped on the shoulders or neck with the flat side of the sword. If this new knight ever broke his vows or acted dishonorably, he would be stripped of his knighthood in another ceremony, in which he was "buried." In the Middle Ages, a knight without honor was considered as good as dead.56.What were the responsibilities of a squire?A.Practicing fighting with a sword and using a bow and arrow skillfully.B.Looking after his own weapons and learning manners from the Lady of the castle.C.Confessing his sin and praying for his mentors.D.Dressing a knight for battles or competitions and protecting him.57.What does the underlined word “ chivalry” mean ?A.the noble spirits a knight possessesB.the tough task a knight has to finishC.the high goal a knight must achieveD.the military discipline a knight should obey58.If a knight were to betray the king, what do you think might happen?A. These procedures are safe and painless. By understanding the normal brain activity, doctors and scientists are better able to assess the brain’s behavior during times of injury, disease, and mental illness.CT or CAT scans: Computed tomography (CT) or computerized axial tomography (CAT) shows images of the brain by passing multiple X-ray beams through the brain tissue. CT or CAT scans show a cross-section of the brain. These scans can be used to find brain tumors.MRI scans: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnet to cause the atoms of the brain to shake. MRI sensors pick up the signals emitted ([i'mit] 发出) from the brain’s atoms and a computer interprets them as a picture. MRIs show more detail than CT or CAT scans can. They are especially useful in finding brain tumors that grow on the back of the brain, between the ears.PET scans:Positron emission tomography (PET) is different from other scans because it shows how the brain functions. Afte r a person’s bloodstream is injected with a small dose of glucose (['glu:kəus] 【生化】葡萄糖), which is what gives the brain energy, scanners around the head detect where the glucose moves. The PET scan shows which part of the brain use a lot of glucose, which are the more active parts. PET scans are helpful for diagnosing strokes, studying mental illness, and learning how the brain process language.A. CT / CA T and PETB. MRI and PETC. CT/CA T and MRID. CT and CA T62. If a person suffers from defect in speaking, which scan will a doctor be mostlikely to suggest?A. CT / CATB. MRIC. PETD. Any one of themCThe psychology of innovationWhy are so few companies truly innovative?Innovation is key to business survival, and companies put substantial resources into inspiring employees to develop new ideas. There are, nevertheless, people working in luxurious, state-of-the-art centers designed to stimulate innovation who find that their environment doesn’t make them feel at all creative. And there are those who don’t have a budget, or much space, but who innovate successfully. For Robert B. Cialdini, Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University, one reason that companies don’t succeed as often as they should is that innovation starts with recruitment. Research shows that the fit between an employee’s values and a company’s values makes a difference to what contribution they make and whether, two years after they join, they’re still at the company. One of the most famous photographs in the story of rock’n’roll emphasizes Cialdini’s views. The 1956 picture of singers Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis jamming at a piano in Sun Studios in Memphis tells a hidden story. Sun’s ‘million-dollar quartet’ could have been a quintet. Missing from the picture is Roy Orbison, a greater natural singer than Lewis, Perkins or Cash. Sam Phillips, who owned Sun, wanted to revolutionize popular music with songs that fused black and white music, and country and blues. Presley, Cash, Perkins and Lewis instinctively understood Phillips’s ambition and believed in it. Orbison wasn’t inspired by the goal, and only ever achieved one hit with the Sun label.Managing innovation is a delicate art. It’s easy for a company to be pulled in conflicting directions as the marketing, product development, and finance departments each get differentfeedback from different sets of people. And without a system which ensures collaborative exchanges within the company, it’s also easy for small ‘pockets of innovation’ to disappear. Innovation is a contact sport. You can’t brief people just by saying, ‘We’re going in this direction and I’m going to take you with me.’Cialdini believes that this ‘follow-the-leader syndrome’ is dangerous, not least because it encourages bosses to go it alone. ‘It’s been scientifically proven that three people will be better than one at solving problems, even if that one person is the smartest person in the field.’To prove his point, Cialdini cites an interview with molecular biologist James Watson. Watson, together with Francis Crick, discovered the structure of DNA, the genetic information carrier of all living organisms. ‘When asked how they had cracked the code ahead of an array of highly accomplished rival investigators, he said something that stunned me. He said he and Crick had succeeded because they were aware that they weren’t the most intelligent of the scientists pursuing the answer. The smartest scientist was called Rosalind Franklin who, Watson said, “was so intelligent she rarely sought advice”.’Writing, visualizing and prototyping can stimulate the flow of new ideas. Cialdini cites scores of research papers and historical events that prove that even something as simple as writing deepens every individual’s engagement in the project. It is, he says, the reason why all those competitions on breakfast cereal packets encouraged us to write in saying, in no more than 10 words: ‘I like Kellogg’s Corn Flakes because… .’ The very act of writing makes us more likely to believe it.Authority doesn’t have to inhibit innovation but it often does. Many theorist believe the ideal boss should lead from behind, taking pride in collective accomplishment and giving credit where it is due. Cialdini says: ‘Leaders should encourage everyone to contribute and simultaneously assure all concerned that every recommendation is important to making the right decision and will be given full attention.’ The frustrating thing about innovation is that there are many approaches, but no magic formula. However, a manager who wants to create a truly innovative culture can make their job a lot easier by recognizing these psychological realities.63. The example of the ‘million-dollar quartet’ underlines the writer’s point aboutA. recognizing talent.B. working as a team.C. having a shared objective.D. being an effective leader.64. (67) ______________________ But when self-esteem is low, you can either sulk and be sad or be afraid to try out new things or take risks and chances with your love-life, career, relationships and self-improvement.Self-esteem plays a key role in the maturity of a person, especially when trying to get away from a dangerous situation, going through a series of trials in life. Our normal responses to these circumstances and situations are governed by how we value ourselves and how our decisions are dictated by how we value ourselves and how our decisions are dictated by these conditions.Faced with tough decisions in life, the more self-esteem one has, the better. It is for that person to make sound decisions, even in the face of peer pressure or stress at work and at home. Let us try to look into some of the common and best practices which have been tried and tested to help boost self-esteem.Always compliment yourself daily, especially by trying to look for specific tasks you did well for that day and congratulate yourself for it. (68) ____________________ List down all things you are good at doing and achieving, be it a talent, skill, sport or building up otherpeople. You can add more focus to these good points and fuel our passion to do better and make you not only understand yourself more, but also give you the true meaning and measurement of self-worth and this is how you see yourself as important.Appreciation of one’s p hysical appearance and bearing can also be your source of self-esteem, be it the size and shape of your body, your overall physical structure or unique features. Your body can be your source of pride and will help you understand how you would like others to see you, or work on your physical appearance to boost self-morale and satisfaction.Sometimes when you tend to see things in a different light or perspective from others, don’t focus too much on making sure that what you think will cause things to change. (69) _____________________________When you have good self-esteem you will realize that what you did was right and was made under your own food judgment, sound principles and concepts based on your personal outlook and attitude towards life.Do not let negative feedback affect you. Of course, one cannot help but feel bad about negative comments or reactions, but you have to consider that these are tests against your character and personality. (70) ________________________________ So try to look at yourself and see, and if you feel less important or are not satisfied with how you see and look at things, then think about ways on how to boost your self-esteem. You’ll thank yourself for it.第II 卷I.SummaryDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.1. One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.2. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”3. “You don't owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.4. Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.5. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case.6. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words...“Paid in full with a glass of milk.(Signed)Dr. Howard KellyTears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently:”Thank You, God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands.”II.TranslationDirections:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1. 民众呼吁政府延长失业的救济。

The clips included sections that ended in interruption-while (43) ____out the interruptions themselves. More often than not, those hearing the interrupted phrases thought that the prime minister was (44)______her conversational turn. It seems her interviewer had come to a (45)_____ conclusion. Why? Conversation, it turns out, is a finely tuned machine, as Nick Enfield, a linguist at the University of Sydney, suggests in "How We Talk. Humans mostly follow a rule called" no (46)_____, no overlap(重叠)”, reacting to the end of a conversational tum by beginning their own in about 200 milliseconds -about the time it takes a sho-distaperumner to (47)______ to the starting gun. For each of them there are four choices marked A. B. C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have justread.(A)Mrs. Bridge said that she judged people by their shoes and by their manners at the table. If someone wore shoes with run-over heels, or shoes that had not been shined for a long time, or shoes with broken laces, you could be pretty sure this person would be careless in other things as well. And there was no better way to judge a persons background than by watching him or her at the table. The children learned it was impolite to talk while eating, or to chew with the mouth open, and as they grew older they learned the more subtle manners not to butter an entire slice of bread, not to take more than one biscuit at a time, unless, of course, the hostess should insist. They were taught to keep their elbows close to their sides while cutting meat, and to hold the utensils in the tips of their fingers. They resisted the temptation to sup up the gravy with a piece of bread, and they made sure to leave a little of everything-not enough to be called wasteful, but just a little to indicate the meal had been suit And ally, they learned that a lady or a gentleman does not fold up a napkin after eating in a public place. The girls absorbed these matters with greater facility than Douglas, who tended to ask the son for everything, sometimes observing that he thought it was all pretty silly. He seemed particularly unable to eat with his left hand lying in his lap; he wanted to leave it on the table, to prop himself up, us it were, and claimed be got a backache with one arm in his lap. Mrs, Bridge told him this was absurd, and when he wanted to know why he could not put his elbow on the table she replied, " Do you want to be different from everyone else?”Douglas was doubtful, but after a long silence, and under the weight of his mother’stranquil gaze, he at last concluded he didn’t.The American habit of switching implement, however, continued to give him trouble andmake him rebellious. With elaborate care he would put down the knife, reach high across hisplate and descend on the left side to pick up the fork, raising it high over the plate again as hereturned to the starting position."Now sop acting ridiculous, " she told him one day at lunch.Well, I sure bet the Egyptians don’t have to eat this way,” he muttered, giving “Egyptians” a vengeful emphasis.“I doubt if they do, she replied calmly, expertly cutting a tr iangle of pineapple from hersalad, "but you' re not an Egyptinn, So you eat the way Americans eat, and that’s final.”56. Which of the following was considered acceptable table manners by Mrs. BridgeA. Fold up a napkin after having a meal in a public placeB. Take more than one biscuits if the hostess insistsC. Put the elbow on the table while eatingD. Butter an entire slice of bread57. Douglas claimed that he got a backache with one arm in his lap, because______.A.he didn’t want to be different from othersB. he was worried that his back might ache soonC. no one answered his question about the table mannersD. he had to find an excuse for not obeying the rules58. What did Douglas mean by saying "I sure bet the Egyptians don’t have to eat this way"?A. He thought it ridiculous to have the strange old table mannersB. He didn’t think Americans should learn from the Egyptians.C. He thought Egyptians used to have strict rules about eatingD. He hoped that his mothers could give in to him if he insisted.59. what's the probable reason why Mrs Bridge put much emphasis on table manners?A. She thought it necessary to cultivate her children’s good eating habitsD. She found it embarrassing to obey her sons wishesBWe want to make the world a better, fairer place. The problem is not that the information exists but that it reaches the wrong people. Information on the Internet could bring great benefits to society, and to individuals, when huge datasets(数据集集) can yield information otherwise unavailable. But once the information is gathered, a precautionary principle has to apply. It is unreasonable to agree with John Perry Barlow, the Internet rights pioneer, when he wittily remarked that "relying on the government to protect your privacy is like asking a peeping Tom to install your window blinds"; but it does not help when it appears that everything the public sector does with the huge datasets it has will be overseen by the media.Governments need to keep our trust; but technology wears away privacy in two ways. The first is simply smartphones. Most Britons-70%-now carry around with them devices which record and report their location, their friends and their interests all the time. The second is the ease with which two or more datasets can be combined to bring out secrets that are apparent in neither set on its own Now nearly 90% of the US population can be uniquely identified simply by combining their gender, date of birth and postal code. All kinds of things can be reliably inferred from freely available data: four likes on Facebook are usually enough to reveal a person's standard of spouse selection.Underlying such problems is human psychology. No one forces anybody to reveal their preferences on Facebook. The latest spectacular breach (泄露) of privacy came when the exercise app Strava published a global map of the 3 trillion data points its users had uploaded, which turned out to reveal the location of secret US military bases around the world. But the chance to boast about where you have been and how fast you were moving is exactly what makes Strava popular. Psychology, as much as technology, made this a massive security breach The users gave enthusiastic consent(允许), but it was fantastically ill-informed. Then again how could anyone give informed consent when not even the firms that collect the data can know how it will be used? The protection of private data from unintentional disclosure(公开) is primarily a social or psychological problem. What’s needed is a chance of attitude among those who harvest and process the data. They need constantly to ask themselves -or to be asked by society- how this information could be used for harm, and how to prevent that from happening.63. The underlined word“overseen”in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to“______”A supervised B. disturbed C. overlooked D. underestimated64. The Strava incident is recalled to indicate____________.A. users should have stopped the app from publicly broadcasting their locationB. users should be reliably informed before giving consent for access to their dataC. users give away their personal data to satisfy their basic human desiresD. users have lost confidence in the government to protect their privacy65. According to the writer, the key to solving privacy problems is_____.A. for technicians to upgrade smartphone systems and instruct social media behaviorB. for data providers to give informed consent before using any appC for the government to ban the unapproved in formation exchange between datasetsD. for the data collectors to ensure the appropriate use of data66. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. Two datasets are better than oneB. It's the psychology, stupidC. Technology: a two-edged swordD. No privacy on the Internet, experts warnSection CDirections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. EachA new sort of convenience store opened in the basement of the headquarters of Amazon in Seattle in January. Customers walk in, scan their phones, pick what they want off the shelves and walk out again. At Amazon Go there are no checkouts and no cashiers. Instead, it is what the tech giant calls “just walk out" shopping, made possible by a new generation of machines that can sense which and what they are picking off the shelves. Within a minute or two of the shopper leaving the store, a receipt pops up on their phone for items they bought. This is the shape of things to come in food retailing(零售业). 67.________________. There is a downside to Amazon Go, even though consumers benefit from lower prices and don't waste time in queues. The store is only open to shoppers who can download an app on their smartphone, which rules out those who rely on welfare food stamps.Change is always disturbing but the likely result of the next wave of automation will be especially celebrated. 68. ___________________.They can do things or will eventually be able to do things that were once the exclusive preserve of humans. That, however, means higher growth but also the risk that the owners of the machines get richer and richer while those displaced get angrier and angrier.69.____________. A robot tax a tax that firms would pay if machines were taking the place of humans-would slow down the pace of automation by making the machines more expensive but this too has costs, especially for a country such as Britain, which has a problem with low investment, low productivity and a shrunken industrial base. The UK has 33 robot units per 10, 000 workers, compared with 93 in the US and 213 in Japan, which suggests the need for more automation not less. On the plus side, the UK has more small and medium-sized companies in artificial intelligence than Germany or France. 70.____________.The big issue is not whether the robots are coming, because they are. It is not even whether they will boost growth, because they will.IV. Summary Writing (10%)Directions: Read the following passage. When it's FreeThat old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away " may hold some truth. In fact, one study found that in 2012, almost half of the deaths in America caused by heart disease, stroke, and type2 diabetes(∏型糖尿病病) were linked to poor diet. But knowing you should eat healthfully and actually doing it are two different things, and making the right choice isn't any easier when a pound of grapes costs more than twice as much as a pound of pasta(意大利面) The Fresh Food Pharmacy aims to change that. A pilot program created by the Geisinger Health System, a hospital network in Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey, this pharmacy resembles a grocery store stocked with fresh produce, lean meats, canned beans, and more. Even better, it's all free.Under the program, patients with type 2 diabetes and qualifying income are prescribed a week’s worth of food for their entire household, and dietitians(营养师) show them how to transform it into healthy meals. After the first year, all 180 participants had improved in key health measurements, in particular their hemoglobin Alc levels(HbAlc), the gold standard for tracking blood sugar control. In 2012, the estimated costs associated with diabetes in the United States were S245 billion. Geisinger will spend only about $1,000 annually on each food-pharmacy patient. David Feinberg, Geisinger's president and CEO, calculates that "a decrease in HbAlc of one point saves us about $8,000 " With many of the patients dropping three points, the program could save $24,000 or more a year in health-care costs.Geisinger isn't the only organization experimenting with produce prescriptions. Nonprofits, food banks, hospitals, and even doctors’ offices around the country have implemented programsthat bring the "food is medicine " concept to life.V. Choose the best answer that best fits according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)For anyone who thinks of themselves as a leader—or an effective manager of their career—accepting a degree of fear when faced with high-stakes decisions may be necessary. Therese Huston, author of a new book about decision-making, urges those who suffer to enjoy it. Tell yourself this isn’t anxiety, this is excitement, she says. Research shows that facing these workplace difficulties with relish(享受)is better than trying to be calm. Forcing yourself to think about a high-pressure situation as an exciting challenge enables you to screen out the negative judgments of others and focus. If you’re not seeing threats everywhere, then you’ll make better decisions, says Ms Huston, a cognitive psychologist who advises companies on how to improve heir decision-making. In How Women Decide, which contains advice for everyone, she draws on research from Alison Wood Brooks of Harvard Business School, who found that trying to calm down can be counterproductive. Studying performance anxiety, Ms Wood Brooks discovered that reassessing stress as excitement can boost results. And the stress brought on by a dilemma needs to be tackled, for the sake of making good and balanced decisions.Ms Huston recommends exploring other options when facing a choice, rather than obsessing about a yes versus no—a binary choice with risks attached piles on the pressure. You should pause and introduce another alternative. Therefore, as to such questions as ‘Should I take this job or not?’, ‘or stay where I am but ask for a new role?’ Ms Huston maintains that decisions based on a simple two-way choice turned out to be more problematic half of the time.Considering more than two options resulted in a more positive verdict(评判)on the decision a year or so later. Ms Huston advises practising the art of generating more than one option in everyday choices when you are calm and relaxed. Make it a habit, she suggests, because when you are stressed, you usually want to move quickly from ‘What am I going to do?’ to ‘At least I’m doing something’.56. Ms Huston believes that ________________.A. accepting fear to some extent is necessary when leaders are making decisionsB. keeping cool is better than feeling anxious when making decisionsC. negative judgments are helpful when leaders are making decisionsD. reassessing stress as excitement can boost results57. Particularly emissions from the burning of fossil fuels such as oil and gas have led to an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Key indicators of climate change-including rising average temperatures, melting glaciers, and rising sea levels-are expected to have devastating consequences for humans and environments. Tackling the challenge posed by climate change will require a coordinated and global effort.Acknowledging that climate change is a common concern of humankind, delegations from 195 states successfully negotiated a new and binding international agreement to protect the global climate at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC)held in Paris in December 2015, The successful adoption of the Paris Agreement was also due to the hard work of a host of non-state actors, including NGOs and research institutions working to address the challenges of climate change. With the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol due to expire in 2012, governments agreed to begin negotiations on an emissions reductions treaty for the post-Kyoto era at the 2007 Conference of Parties(COP)in Bali. In line with the agreement reached by the parties to the UNFCCC at the 2011 COP in Durban to negotiate a new climate protection treaty, this process was concluded successfully with the adoption of Paris Agreement in late 2015.One of the key innovations of the Paris Agreement is the adoption of a clearly defined target to limit global warming. The signatory states have agreed to limit the rise in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. In order to achieve this, the agreement requires parties to prepare, communicate and maintain so-called“Nationally Determined Contributions”(NDCs)that they intend to achieve. These national commitments represent a further departure from the model of Kyoto Protocol. The Paris Agreement does not include any language on precisely what states should include in these commitments. While the emissions reduction targets specified for each country under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol were the outcome of multilateral negotiations, under the Paris Agreement states are invited to determine their national contributions as they see fit. The NDCs submitted so far under the Paris Agreement will not be sufficient to keep global warming below the two degree target. However, the agreement also requires that states review the implementation of their NDCs and update their pledges every five years. The first evaluation of theimplementation of the Paris Agreement is scheduled for 2023.63. Which of the following is not the result of greenhouse effect?A. Average temperature risesB. Glaciers meltC. Human beings burn fossil fuelsD. Sea levels rise64. In what aspect is Paris Agreement different from Kyoto Protocol?A. National contributions are not stated clearly in Paris AgreementB. Kyoto Protocol were the outcome of multilateral negotiationsC. Paris Agreement acknowledges and climate change is a common concern of humankindD. Specified targets each state should achieve are not included in Paris Agreement65. It can be concluded from the passage that ___________.A. Kyoto Protocol is still working nowB. With Paris Agreement, human beings needn’t worry about climate change anymoreC. Paris Agreement will probably not achieve the goal of keeping global warming below 2°CD. National commitments in Paris Agreement agree with the model of the Kyoto Protocol66. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. The Cause of Climate ChangeB. The Paris Agreement and Global Climate PolicyC. Kyoto Protocol Replaces the Paris AgreementD. The outcome of Paris AgreementSection CDirections : Complete the following passage by using the sentences listed below. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than youSex difference in sports interest: What does evolution say?Sports are enormously popular, and one striking pattern is that boys and men are typically much more involved than are girls and women. This sex difference has policy implications, and it raises fundamental questions about the mature of sex differences. A recent review article by Deaner, Balish, and Lombardo(2016), published in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences, analyzes the relevant theoretical work.First, the authors demonstrated that females’ under-representation in sport—both as participants and spectators—generally reflects their lesser sports interest, not merely fewer opportunities for involvement. Moreover, this sex difference occurs in all societies described thus far, from hunters and gatherers to large contemporary societies. ______(67)____________.Next, the authors explored adaptive, functional hypotheses(猜想)for sports. One hypothesis holds that individual compete in sports to gain status and that non-participants monitor sports performances so they can evaluate potential competitors and allies(同盟).______(68)_______. Another hypothesis is that sports serve as courtship displays that advertise participant quality to the opposite sex. This hypothesis effectively explain some aspects of female’s sports interest.____(69)____. Although it is often assumed that socialization practices entirely cause this sex difference, the evidence that socialization plays a role remains doubtful. In particular, no systematic historical comparison has ever shown a decrease in the sex difference. Moreover, several studies indicate that inborn hormones contribute to males’ greater sports interest. The points from this review are that the sex difference in sports interest is widespread, partly due to evolutionary pressures that differentially affected males and females, and unlikely to be fully overturned by socialization. ______(70)______, Most notably, Title IX is a U.S. law that prohibits sexual discrimination in educational opportunities , including sports and Title IX is generally implemented under the assumption that females’ sports interest is inherently eq ual to that of males. The present research indicates that this implementation may require revision.Section DDirections : Read the following passage , Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words . Use your own words as far as possible.Could goats become our new best friends? In a new paper in the journal Biology letters, researchers from QMUL’s School of Biological and Chemical Sciences found that goats respond to people by gazing at them when facing a problem they cannot solve alone, and their responses change depending on the person’s behaviour. To investigate, the team trained goats to remove a lid from a box to receive a reward. They made the reward inaccessible and recorded their reaction. In the test, the goats redirected their gaze frequently between the inaccessible reward and human experimenters. They also gazed towards a forward facing person earlier, more often and for longer compared to when the person was facing away. The results provide strong evidence for complex communication between humans and goats, which were domesticated primarily for agricultural production, and show similarities with animals bred to become pets or working animals, such as dogs and horses. The research indicates that the domestication of animals has a much broader impact on our knowledge about human-animal relationship than previously believed. For example, it’s thought that the capacity of dogs to be aware of information from humans is the result of changes to the brain from becoming a companion animal through domestication.“Goats were the first livestock(家畜)species to be domesticated, about 10,000 years ago,” said lead author Dr Alan McElligott from the School’s Department of Biological and Experimental Psychology.“From our research, we know that many domesticated animals, for agricultural production are smarter than their reputation suggests, and these results show how they can communicate and interact with their human handlers just as pets or working ani mals.”The researchers hope the study will lead to a better understanding of how skilled livestock are in their ability to solve problems and interact with humans. They also wish that an improvement in animal welfare would be reached ultimately. What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Mo st people would say that, while these self-destructive acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make se nse. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power t hat really gets you into trouble.Think back to the time you took your very first sip of beer. Dis gusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of b eer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily d rink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it ta stes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or c offee can become temptation (诱惑) that you need will-power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requi res a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than g ive in to them, can ever come to someday develop a “taste” fo r Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. Weforce ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and ev en illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool. These bad habits aren’t self-control failures---far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact sel f-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmf ul. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about w hen and where to apply it.12. What do most people think causes bad behavior?A.Being forced by others.B.Not having enough will power.C.Enjoying their first experiences.D.Following the examples of their friends.13. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.AMen of HonorA knight was a mounted warrior of medieval Europe who served a king or other feudal superior, usually in return for land. He would be sentenced to death.B. He would be robbed of his title.C. He would be forced to leave Court.D. A knight had gone through different stages of training to become a KNIGHT.C. A knight was militarily skillful but not necessarily literate.D. Knighthood started in the Medieval Ages and existed only in England.BReading Your MindModern technology allows scientists to look inside a living human brain to see what is happening. After a person’s bloodstre am is injected with a small dose of glucose (['glu:kəus] 【生化】葡萄糖), which is what gives the brain energy, scanners around the head detect where the glucose moves. James Watson suggests that he and Francis Crick won the race to discover theDNA code because theyA. were conscious of their own limitations.B. brought complementary skills to their partnership.C. were determined to outperform their brighter rivals.D. encouraged each other to realize their joint ambition.65. The writer mentions competitions on breakfast cereal packets as an example ofhow to______________________________________________________.A. inspire creative thinking.B. generate concise writing.C. promote loyalty to a group.D. strengthen commitment to an idea.66. In the last paragraph, the writer suggests that it is important for employees toA. be aware of their company’s goals.B. feel that their contributions are valued.C. have respect for their co-workers’ achievements.D. understand why certain management decisions are made.Section CDirections: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Many people go through life's usual phases of ups and downs, which are common and normal stages in life, but when your self-esteem is low, you may need to know how to boost your self-esteem, since it can lead to problems you may not have thought of.Self-esteem is the measurement or the value of how a person knows his worth and its effects are life-changing and dramatic, since it makes up a pers on’s attitude and outlook towards life. You can add more focus to these good points and fuel our passion to do better and make you not only understand yourself more, but also give you the true meaning and measurement of self-worth and this is how you see yourself as important.Appreciation of one’s physical appearance and bearing can also be your source of self-esteem, be it the size and shape of your body, your overall physical structure or unique features.
