Of course it is not the Oxford English Dictionary’s fault but we want to use another term instead of “couch potato” because potatoes are naturally healthy.”Th e OED says that “couch potato” began as American slang, meaning “a person who spends his or her leisure time sitting around, especially watching television or video tapes.”The Potato Council says its campaign is backed by dieticians (饮食学家) who say the vegetable is low in fat and high in vitamin C.Supporting the campaign, famous cook Antony Worrall Thompson said the vegetable was one of Britain’s favorite foods.“Not only are they healthy, they are also convenient and yummy (美味). Life without potato is like a sandwich without a filling,” he said.John Simpson, chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, said the dictionary first included the term “couch potato” in 1993 and said “dictionaries just reflect the words that society us es.”Simpson said words were never taken out of the full-length dictionary, which includes some 650,000 words in 20 volumes. But little-used words can be removed from the smaller dictionaries to make way for newer ones.“If society stops using words then they get taken out of the smaller dictionaries,” he added. The first known recorded use of the expression “couch potato” was in an article in Los Angeles Times, in 1979, Simpson said.Nigel Evans, a member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley in Lancashire, has made a motion in support of the campaign, highlighting the nutritional value of the British potato.60.British potato farmers wanted to _________.A.advertise their producesB.call for a higher price for their potatoesC.remove the expression “couch potato” from the dictionaryD.let people know how important the potato is in people’s lives61.The farmers think that _________.A.potatoes have had a bad imageB.Potatoes are good for people by natureC.potatoes sometimes do harm to peopleD.it’s the dictionary’s fault to use the expression “couch potato”62.John Simpson thinks that _________.A.the expression can be taken out of every kind of dictionaryB.dictionaries do not necessarily reflect the words the society usesC.little-used words can remain in the smaller dictionariesD.it is impossible for them to take the expression out of the dictionary63.What is wrong with the expression “couch potato” according to the farmers in this passage? It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say that when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to make special provisions to supply the missing vitamins. An example of the dangers of a restricted diet may be seen in the disease known as"beri-beri", which used to make large numbers of Eastern people who lived mainly on rice suffer. In the early years of last century, a Dutch scientist named Eijkman was trying to discover the cause of beri-beri. At first he thought it was transmitted by a germ (病菌) . He was working in a Japanese hospital, where the patients were fed on polished rice which had had the outer coverings removed from the grain, it was thought this would be easier for weak and sick people to digest.Eijkman thought his germ theory was proved when he noticed the chickens in the hospital yard, which were fed on remains from the patients' plates, were also showing signs of the disease. He then tried to separate the germ, which he thought was causing the disease, but his experiments were interrupted by a hospital official, who ordered that the rice without coverings, even though left over by the patients, was too good for chickens. It should be recooked for the patients, and the chickens should be fed on cheap, rough rice with the outer coverings still on the grain.Eijkman noticed that the chickens began to recover on the new diet. He began to consider the possibility that eating unmilled rice (糙米) somehow prevented or cured beri-beri--even that a lack of some ingredient (成分) in the coverings may be the cause of the disease. Indeed this was the case. The element needed to prevent beri-beri was shortly afterwards separated from rice coverings and is now known as vitamin B. The milled rice, though more expensive, was in fact causing the disease the hospital was trying to cure. Nowadays, this terrible disease is much less common thanks to our knowledge of vitamins.68.What does the underlined word restricted mean?A. balancedB. limitedC. diverseD. complex69.According to the passage, a good mixed diet .A. is suitable for losing weightB. should be only fruits and vegetablesC. normally contains enough vitaminsD. is often difficult to arrange70.What do we know about the disease beri-beri?A. It killed large numbers of people.B. It resulted from lack of vitamins.C. It was transmitted by milled rice.D. It was caused by diseased chickens.71 .What can be the best title of the passage?A. A Good Mixed DietB. The Importance of Unmilled RiceC. The Dangers of Beri-beriD. The Importance of VitaminsEAn idea came to me, and I turned off the lights in the studio. In the darkness, I took off my shirt and took up the cello (大提琴); it was the first time in my life I'd felt the instrument against my bare chest.I'd never thought about that; music scholars always talk about the resonating properties (共振)of various instruments, but surely the performer's own body must have some effect on the sound. As I dug into the notes I imagined that my own chest and lungs were extensions of the sound box; I seemed to be able to change the sound by the way I sat, and by varying the muscular tightness in my upper body. After improvising for a while, I started playing, still in the darkness.I heard the music through my skin. For the first time I didn't think about how it would sound to anyone else, and slowly, joyfully, gratefully, I started to hear again. The notes sang out, first like a trickle:, then like a fountain of cool water bubbling up from a hole in the middle of a desert. After an hour or so I looked up, and in the darkness saw the outline of the cat sitting on the floor in front of me, cleaning her paws and purring loudly, I had an audience again, humble as it was.So that's what I do now with my cello. At least once a clay I find time to tune it, close my eyes and listen. It's probably not going to lead to the kind of comeback I'd be thirsty for—years of playing badly have left scars on my technique—but I might eventually try giving a concert if I feel up to it.Occasionally I feel a stab of longing, and I wish I could give just one more concert on a great stage before my lights blink off, but that longing passes more quickly now.I take comfort in the fact that, unlike the way I felt before, I can enjoy playing for myself now.I feel relaxed and expansive when I play, as if I could stretch out my arms and reach from one end of the apartment to the other.A feeling of completeness and dignity surrounds me and lifts me up.72.The writer put the cello against his bare chest to ______.A.test music scholars' ideas about the resonating propertiesB.experience the effect of his body on the musical soundC.reduce his muscular tightness in his upper bodyD.check the function of the sound box73.In Paragraph 2 , the writer intends to ______.A.explain his feelings of playing before a catB.identify specific pieces of music he playedC.express his feelings of playing against his bodyD.describe the sound when he played against his body74.From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer was ______.A.optimistic B.discouraged C.nervous D.enthusiastic75.The passage is mainly about _____.A.a musician playing the cello for an audienceB.a musician's feelings when playing the celloC.a musician finding joy in playing music in a new wayD.a musician's desire to return to his former profession第四部分写作(共两节,满分35分)第一节:任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文章后的表格中填入恰当的单词。

2015届高三第一次高考模拟考试英语试题Ⅰ语言知识及应用(共两节,满分45分)第一节完形填空(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)There are two factors which determine an individual‘s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ 1 , some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a 2 he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to 3 . So the second factor is what happens to the individual —the sort of environ ment in which he is reared. If an individual is 4 environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is 5 .The importance of environment in determining an individual‘s intelligence can be 6 by the case history of Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at 7 ,and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in 8 foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated communit y with poor 9 opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to c ollege. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every 10 to be stimulated intellec tually. AI’ve often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have.My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland. I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs. The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wi nd blew so hard that we couldn’t leave the tiny hut. To stay warm, we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut. We tried to call for help but the radio did not work. Day after day, we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever (幽居病) and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside. Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup. By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope. From then on, the world looks different to me, as does my life. It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point.Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time. In fact, it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.1. The writer went to Iceland to ______.A. enjoy the natural beautiful floating icebergsB. take photos about the region for a bookC. collect materials for psychological researchD. challenge the high mountains there2. During the trip in Iceland, those travelers faced difficulties EXCEPT that ______.A. they got lost in the mountainB. they were short of food and fuelC. they couldn’t see the surroundings clearlyD. they failed to get in touch with the rescue team3. From Paragraph 3, we learn that the travelers ______.A. were in despair before they were rescuedB. stayed in the hut for three days altogetherC. got sick because of going for ski outsideD. got rescued immediately the weather turned fine4. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. The writer is a travel agent who loves difficult challenges.B. In Iceland the weather is always extreme and it snows a lot.C. The travellers were so depressed that they needed psychotherapy.D. Awful journeys may become life-changing events that inspire people.BWell, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to thumb rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to be refused when you call a friend and ask for a ride. But with Twitter, you just look for other people heading the same way.It may sound risky, so many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter just like me, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern.“I think the digital connection of young people is really key, because younger generations grew up sharing things on line, sharing files, photos, music, etc, so they’ve been very used to sharing,” said Juliet Schor, a sociology professor at Boston College. The sharing economy got big during the recession (经济衰退), allowing people to access more goods, services using technology and even to share costs. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom, like what my friend Ea rl says, “The symbol of freedom isn’t the car any more because there’s technology out there connecting you to a car.”According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license compared to six in ten today. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license but an iPhone.“Driving, for young people, does mean they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit i n the passage side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus.” Schor continued. To me, another plus is that ridesharing represents something, something much bigger than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter.5. The American teens like the author, prefer to possess an iPhone as a birthday gift because _______.A. it is most fashionable and coolB. they are bored with driving carsC. they are fond of being connectedD. it is much cheaper than a car6. We can learn from the text that _______.A. Twitter is a website for teens to make friends and achieve goalsB. ridesharing can be seen as a sign that people still count on each otherC. driving cars for teens means a plus and connecting with technologyD. having a car and cost-sharing symbolize more freedom for the author’s mother7. Professor Juliet would agree that _______.A. young people will sit waiting to be contacted by reading a passageB. sharing economy is bound to be responsible for the recessionC. young people tend to share a car with strangers by means of TwitterD. being connected via technology comes first for young people8. The best title for the passage is probably _______.A. Twitter, an Awesome WebsiteB. Cars or iPhoneC. Teens Use Twitter to Thumb RidesD. Cool Teens on the GoCImagine having an idea, drawing it on paper, bringing it to a store and seeing it turned into a physical object. This is now possible with the help of 3D printers.Such machines were once used just by universities and big companies. But now, stores with 3D printing services are appearing around the United States.Bryan Jaycox and his wife opened The Build Shop LLC in Los Angeles two years ago.The store is filled with tools like a laser cutter, an industrial sewing machine and 3D printers.Bryan Jaycox requires $ 15 an hour to print an object. He also charges a fee depending on the size of the object and up to $ 50 an hour for design and labor services. The Jaycoxs also offer 3D printing classes for anyone who is interested. One of the students in a recent class was Ki Chong Tran.He plans to open a 3D printing business in Cambodia."The demand has been amazing. It's been much more than I would have imagined," said Ki Chong Tran."I think 3D printing is going to be huge. It's going to make a huge impact on society as a whole," he added.Mr Jaycox predicts that within five years, 3D printing technology could become more consumer friendly. But Ki Chong Tran says even current technology can make a difference in a developing country like Cambodia."With 3D printing you can give them tools, and you put it in their hands so they are responsible more for their own development. They learn skills beyond just learning English and becoming a tour guide or something like that or working at a bank. You can actually create things that give value to the world," said Ki Chong Tran.He says it's not just Cambodia but anywhere where there is a 3D printer, it can turn a good idea into reality.9.We learn from Paragraph l that 3D printing_________.A. is now available to ordinary peopleB.first appeared in the United StatesC.can turn your every dream into realityD.is now only used by universities10.Bryan Jaycox opened The Build Shop LLC to__________.A.sell 3D printers and different kinds of toolsB.produce all types of printing machinesC.offer 3D printing classes and servicesD.design different types of 3D printers11.In Mr Jaycox's opinion, within five years 3D printing will_________.A.make it easier to do businessB.be accessible to all consumersC.change the way of social contactD.bring about more profits to the sellers12.How will 3D printing technology benefit developing countries according to the text?A.It helps the people work efficiently at a bank.B.It will promote the learning of EnglishC.It will accelerate the development of tourism.D.It offers them a new way of development.DAs thousands of communities in the USA —especially in the South —became booming gateways for immigrant families from Central and South America during the 1990s and the early years of the new century, public schools struggled with the unfamiliar task of serving the large numbers of English learners arriving in their classrooms.Education programs needed to be built from scratch. “We had no teaching resources suitable for English learners here before. We had to develop them all ourselves,” a Texas principal said. Throughout the country, districts had to train their own teachers to teach English to non-native speakers or recruit (招聘)teachers from elsewhere. School staff members had to figure out how to communicate with parents who spoke no English. But even as immigration has slowed or stopped in many places, and instructional programs for English-learners have matured, serving immigrant families and their children remains a work in progress in many public schools, especially those in communities that are skeptical, or sometimes unwelcoming, to the newcomers. One of the biggest challenges educators face, is communicating effectively with parents who don’t speak English — an issue that, in part, has contributed to recent complaints of discrimination by Latino students in some cities.“The parents’ role is very important for the success of these students, but it's also one of the most difficult things we’ve had to tackle(处理),” said Jim D. Rollins, the president of the Springdale school district, where the 19,000-student school system has gone from having no English-learners 15 years ago to more than 7,500 now. “You have to make it a priority and work on it, work on it, and work on it.”Aside from the practical challenges, such as finding bilingual (会说两种语言的) staff members, guiding districts through such dramatic changes requires school leaders to bridge difficult political and cultural divides. For school leaders in the South, especially in the last few years, this difficult job has been made harder still by the negative attitudes of some locals towards immigrants.13. According to the passage, what is the problem that public schools are facing?A. Handling more cases from the immigrant Mexican communities.B. Offering services to immigrant families in the southern states.C. Offering enough communicative lessons to immigrant parents.D. Providing education for non-native English learners.14. The underlined part “built from scratch” (in Paragraph 2) probably means “________”.A. completely newB. painful to makeC. based on past experienceD. constructed gradually15. What do we know about the immigrant parents?A. Many of them cannot speak English.B. Most of them think education is not important.C. Some of them feel skeptical about the local community.D. Few of them have attended American schools.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
高中英语真题:高级中学2015届高三第一次模拟考试试题.doc
高中英语真题:高级中学2015届高三第一次模拟考试试题.doc一、阅读理解(共4题)1.Samuel Osmond is a 19-year-old law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even reali ze that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I gr ew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel.Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.”However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies.21. What is special about Samuel Osmond?A. He has a gift for writing music.B. He can write down the note he hears.C. He is a top student at the law school.D. He can play the musical piece he hears.22. What can we learn from Paragraph 2 ?A.Samuel chose law against the wish of his parents.B. Samuel planned to be a lawyer rather than a musician.C. Samuel thinks of himself as a man of great musical ability.D. Samuel studies law and music on the advice of his teachers.23. Everyone around Samuel was surprised because he _________.A. received a good early education in musicB. played the guitar and the piano perfectlyC. could play the piano without reading musicD. could play the guitar better than his father24. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A. The Qualities of a MusicianB. The Story of a Musical TalentC. The Importance of Early EducationD. The Relationship between Memory and Music.2.I fell in love with England because it was quaint (古雅)—all those little houses, looking terribly old-fashioned but nice, like dolls’ houses. I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved London. I’ve slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it’s an ugly town now.Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners. The fair play is going, unfortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners—people shut doors heavily in your face and politeness is disappearing.I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. You’re forced to live indoors. In Paris I go out much more, to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub, and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafes are not terribly nice.As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb on taxis because I will not take public transport after 10 p. m. I used to use it , but now I’m afraid. The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and that’s typically French. In Middlesex I had a neighbor who is 82 now. His family only lived two miles away, but I took him to France for Christmas once because he was always alone.25. The writer doesn’t like London because she ______.A. is not used to the life there nowB. has lived there for seventeen yearsC. prefers to live in an old-fashioned houseD. has to be polite to everyone she meets there26. Where do people usually meet their friends in England?A. In a cafe.B. In a restaurant.C. In a nightclub.D. In a pub.27. The underl ined part “it” (in Para. 4) refers to______.A. a taxiB. the moneyC. a bombD. public transport28. The writer took her neighbors to France for Christmas because he ______.A. felt lonely in EnglandB. had never been to FranceC. was from a typical French familyD. didn't like the British idea of family3. Like many new graduates, I left university full of hope for the future but with no real idea of what I wanted to do. My degree, with honors, in English literature had not really prepared me for anything practical. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow, but I had no idea how to do that. That’s when I learned about the Lighthouse Project.I started my journey as a Lighthouse Project volunteer by reading as much as I could about the experiences of previous volunteers. I knew it would be a lot of hard work, and that I would be away from my family and friends for a very long time. In short, I did not take my decision to apply for the Lighthouse Project lightly. Neither did my family.Eventually, however, I won the support of my family, and I sent in all the paperwork needed for the application. After countless interviews and presentations, I managed to stand out among the candidates and survive the test alone. Several months later, I finally received a call asking me to report for the duty. I would be going to a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had no idea. But I was about to find out. After completing my training, I was sent to the village that wassmall and desperately in need of proper accommodation. Though the local villagers were poor, they offered their homes, hearts, and food as if I were their own family. I was asked to lead a small team of local people in building a new schoolhouse. For the next year or so, I taught in that same schoolhouse. But I sometimes think I learned more from my students than they did from me.Sometime during that period, I realized that all those things that had seemed so strange or unusual to me no longer did, though I did not get anywhere with the local language, and I returned to the United States a different man. The Lighthouse Project had changed my life forever.29. According to the Paragraph 2, it is most likely that the authorA. discussed his decision with his family.B. asked previous volunteers about voluntary workC. attended special training to perform difficult tasksD. felt sad about having to leave his family and friends30. In his application for the volunteer job, the authorA. participated in many discussionsB. went through some interviews and presentationsC. wrote quite a few papers on voluntary workD. faced strong competition from other candidates31. On arrival at the village, the author wasA. asked to lead a farming teamB. sent to teach in a schoolhouseC. received warmly by local villagersD. arranged to live in a separate house.4.Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere wall away from your college.King’s Art CentreA day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. Thisweekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists. You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn fr om the masters’ or get more creative with paint – free of charge. The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.The Botanic GardenThe Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University. The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals. The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.Byron’s PoolMany stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did man age to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now k nown as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past GrantChester in the south Cambridge shire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf – over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.32. As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for ____.A. attending the masters’ classB. working with local artistsC. learning life drawingD. seeing an exhibition33. “Torch Aloe” and “Venus Flytrap” are ____.A. common insectsB. impressive plantsC. rarely-seen snakesD. wildlife-enthusiasts34. We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed ____.A. to fear pet bearsB. to like walkingC. to be a heavy drinkerD. to finish university in 180535. In the passage Byron’s Pool is described as a lake ____.A. surrounded by fieldsB. owned by Lord ByronC. located in Grant ChesterD. discovered by Virginia Woolf二、阅读填空(共2题)1.All over the world people enjoy sports. paperclip, made of steel wire bent into a looped()shape,is an instrument used to hold sheets of paper toget her. This common device is a wonder of simplicity and function. But where did this simple, cheap, and practical invention co me from?In the late 19th century, the most common way to hold papers together was by using a pin.Although the pin was an ine xpensive tool and was easily removable,it would 1eave holes in the ter,as steelvwire became more common, invent ors began to notice its elastic()feature.With this feature,it could be stretched and twisted into various clip-like objects. In the years just before 1900,quite a few paperclip designs appeared. The name most frequently associated with the paperclip invention is Johan Vaaler,a Norwegian inventor. However,Vaaler’s clips were not the same as the paperclips curr entlyin use.Specifically, they did not have the inside loop we see today. The familiar looped design was invented by Gem Manuf acturing Ltd.in England. This clip is therefore sometimes known as the Gem clip.Because of Vaaler, the paperclip played an important historical role in Norway.During World War II,Norway was occu pied by the Nazis.Norwegians were prohibited from wearing any symbol of their national unity(),such as buttons wi th the initials of their king. Thus,in protest, they started wearing paperclips to show their unity. The reason for doing this was simple:Paperclips were a Norwegian invention whose original function was to bind together. After the war,a giant papercli p statue was put up in Oslo to honour Vaaler—even though his design was never actually produced.25.According to the first paragraphthe paperclip is________.A.made of paperB.for holding clothes togetherC.shaped like a pinD.inexpensive and useful26.One way the paperclip is better than the pin is that_________A.it is cheaperB.it is simplerC.it doesn’t damage the paperD.it can be removed more easily27.Which of the following best shows what the Gem clip looks like?28.The last paragraph is mainly about_________.A.how widely used Vaaler’s clip isB.how V aalers clip became a national symbolC.how the Nazis ruled the Norwegian peopleD.why Norwegians had the initials of their king on their buttonsCI was born on the last day of February.I’ve always felt sorry for February, squeezed between the big months of January( named for the Roman god Janus, keeper of gateways)and March(after Mars, the god of war). The first Roman calendar,it is said, had 10 months and no February.Beginning at the vernal equinox()with March,i t ended with December. In an agricultural society, winter was of little importance, and thus went undivided.January and February were added about 700 B.C.by the second king of Rome,Numa Pompilius. He made all the months 29 or 31 days, but shortened February, the last month of the year,by giving it only 28.Next,it was the church’s turn.In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII announced a new calendar in Europe. Many changes were ma de,but the Pope passed up yet another chance to give February equality with the other months. It’s messy, even dangerous, changing how we measure time, but Pope Gregory was hardly the last one to try.The League o f Nations received over 150 new calendar designs, and the United Nations has considered more proposals since. Each propos al involves something that supposedly modernizes the calendar. But I have a simpler proposal that won’t lead to chaos, and will correct the historical injustices against Februarymove the last day of January and the last day of March into February to make it a normal month with 30 days, and a respecta ble 31 on leap years().This would not add or subtract a single day from the calendar year. It’s a great idea. And unlike J ulius and Augustus,I won’t even demand a month named in my honor.29.The first Roman calendar had only 10 months because_________.A.February hated to be squeezed between the big monthsB.the god of war always fought with January and FebruaryC.the Romans did not like the cold winter weatherD.it was Considered unnecessary to divide winter30.Which of the following is closest to Numa Pompilius’calendar?31.The writer sounds_____in the passage.A.sadB.humorousC.happyD. angryDOne important thing during the pre-Christmas rush at our house was the arrival of my daughter’s kindergarten report car d.She got high praise for her reading, vocabulary and overall enthusiasm. On the other hand,We learnt that she has work to do on her numbers and computer skills, though the detailed handwritten report her teachers prepared is absent of any words tha t might be interpreted as negative()in describing her efforts.A number System indicates how she’s measuring up in e ach area without any mention of passing or failing. The debate over whether formal grades should be given to kids has long existed. At one level, the advantages and disadva ntages are obvious.A grade system provides a straightforward standard by which to measure how your child is progressing a t school--and how he or she is getting on compared to other children. But as writer Sue Ferguson notes,Grades can deceive. ()The aim should be”to measure learning, not simply what a student can remember on a test.”The two aren’t the same-and if you doubt that as an adult, ask yourself whether you could sit down without any preparation and still pass those high-s chool-level examinations. If you’re old enough,You’ve lived through this debate before. At one time,it was considered unfair to put children in dire ct competition with one another if it could be avoided. The intention behind that may have been good, but it ignored the fact t hat competition, and the will to come out on top,are essential components of the human condition.32.Which of the following seems to be weak on the daughter’s kindergarten report card?A.Reading.B.V ocabulary.C.Enthusiasm.D.Numbers.33.what did the teachers try to do when preparing the report card?A.Avoid using negative words.B.Describe the facts as they really were.e numbers instead of words.D.Avoid showing weak areas.34.What does the writer suggest by the underlined part in Paragraph 2?A.Most adults can pass high-school-level examinations without preparation.B.There’s no doubt that most high-school-level examinations measure learning.C.As an adult, you should not doubt your ability to pass high-school-level examinations.D.It’s difficult for most adults to pass high-school-level examinations without preparation.35.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?A.Schools should not give formal grades to kids.B.Schools should give formal grades to kids.C.Giving formal grades to kids has no disadvantages at a11.D.It’s unfair to put children in direct competition with one another.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
