初级剑桥商务英语翻译练习题(1)Translate the following passages into Chinese.Passage 1The weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day are by far the biggest shopping period of the year in the US. This year, even though there are many grounds for economic worry, Americans are buying like crazy. Some economists think they are crazy; others are thankful that they are keeping the US economy from slipping into second recession. The slogen of the day is Shop till you drop! Environmentalists looking on this orgy of consumption can only be appalled.【参考译文】从感恩节到圣诞节之间的几周,是US人一年中购物的最高潮。
(2)Translate the following passages into Chinese.Passage 1Every employee has five sources of power to draw from. Assess your potential power sources and use them to your advantage.1. Personal power is all about your charisma, your passion to achieve the strength of your convictions, your ability to communicate and inspire, and your leadership skills.2. Relationship power derives from the network of contacts and friends that you make, develop, and maintain at work; from coworkers who keep you up to date with the goings-on in their part of the organization, to executives who seek you out for special projects——and everyone in between.3. Position power is directly related to where you reside on your company’s organizational chart. Owners, presidents, and CEOs have plenty of position power, while receptionists, clerks, and laborers typically have little or none.4. Knowledge power is based on the special expertise and knowledge that you have of your job, your departments, or your organization.5. Task power is inherent in the jobs you are assigned at work. Some work is by nature more important to the health of the organization than others. For example, salespeople, whose job is to bring in money by selling its products or services, usually have high task power. You can leverage any source of power you have to build your base of power in another source.【参考译文】每个雇员都有五种可以利用的权力资源。

BEC商务英语初级阅读试题及答案分享1Trouble with TeamworkMary Owen examines the role and efficiency of teamsRecruiters say that candidates who can give examples ofwork they have done as members of a successful team are in asstrong a position as those who can point to significant individualachievement. Indeed, too much of the latter may suggest thatthe person concerned is not a 'team player' - one of the moreserious failings in the book of management. The importance of being a team player is a side effect of the increasing interaction acrossdepartments and functional divides. Instead of pushing reports, paperwork and decisions aroundthe organisation, 'teams provide a dynamic meeting place where ideas can be shared and expertisemore carefully targeted at important business issues,' says Steve Gardner, in his book KeyManagement Concepts. He adds, 'Globalisation has added a further dimension to teamwork.Multinational teams now study policy decisions in the light of their impact on the local market.' But is teamworking being overdone? 'Some managers are on as many as seven or eightdifferent teams', says Dr Cathy Bandy, a psychologist who recently ran a conference on thesubject. 'They take up so much time that managers can't get on with core tasks.' Forming teamsand having meetings has, she says, become an end in itself, almost regardless of purpose. There isalso the danger of an unhealthy desire to keep the team going after thework has been done. 'People feel the need to belong, and team membership can provide a kind of psychologicalsupport.' The idea behind teamworking is that, when the right group of people is brought together, a'force' develops which is greater than the sum of their individual talents. This is often true in sport, where good players can reach unexpected heights as members of an international team. However, few business situations have as clear a set of objectives, or as clear criteria of success orfailure, as winning a match.'In business, everyone needs to be clear about what the challenge is and whether a team isthe right way of approaching it', says Steve Gardner. 'Unfortunately, people focus instead on whothe members of the team should be and what roles they are to play' Dr Bandy agrees. 'There isalways a danger that teams can turn into committees,' she says. 'In a lot of situations, one or twoindividuals would be much more effective.'So what makes a successful team? There are some general qualities that have been identified.Steve Gardnerrecommends that in every team there should be someone who is good atresearching ideas and another who is good at shooting down impractical ones. There should bethose who can resolve the tensions that naturally occur in a team and others who are focused ongetting the job done. Also, providing a clear and achievable target at the outset is the best way ofensuring that the team will move on to greater things.13 What point does the writer make about teamworking at the beginning of the article?A It is the most successful form of management.B It has changed the recruitment procedure in companies.C Well-run teams still allow individuals to demonstrate theirtalents.D Being a team player is now considered an essential management skill.14 According to the article, teamwork developed within companies as a response toA modern office design.B changing work practices.C a reduction in administrative tasks.D the expansion of international business.15 In the third paragraph, Dr Bandy suggests thatA many employees do not enjoy working in teams.B some managers are not very effective team leaders.C some teams are created unnecessarily.D few teams are well organised.16 According to the writer, teamwork is more effective in the field of sport because the playersA know what they want to achieve.B are more competitive by nature.C have more individual talent.D can be driven by national pride.17 Steve Gardner and Dr Bandy agree that when a business team is created people do notpay enough attention toA the structure of the team.B alternatives to the team.C selecting the team members.D directing the team's activities.18 What is Steve Gardner's advice on operating a successful team?A Maintain a flexible approach to membership.B Allow personalities to develop within the team.C Select people who fit naturally into certain roles.D Make every effort to avoid conflict between members.参考答案及解析《Trouble with Teamwork》,团队合作的麻烦。

It makes possible the exchange of ideas between men possible as well as the transmission of ideas from father to son.Part Three. Questions 23 to 30.Interviews conducted by members of the ECE, (Economic Committee of Europe) with enterprises engaged in third-market cooperation have identified several areas in which problems occurred. Many of these problems are characteristic of the particular industrial sector in which the cooperation takes place and cannot be generalized to supply to other sectors. When vehicles and machinery made under cooperation arrangements are launched on new markets, substantial modifications may have to be made in basic features. Such changesmay be dictated by a lack of servicing facilities for the prescribed frequency of service for the standard model and an operating environment that is different form that prevailing in either of the partner's home markets. Since acceptance of the product in question by the client depends upon the manufacturer successfully satisfying his specifications, the partners must closely coordinatetheir ordering procedures in such a way that these changed specifications are communicated in time to the manufacturing plants. If the producing enterprise has a long lead time as a result of internal planning procedures, it may find it difficult to make the necessary changes in the standard model during the time available, to the detriment of its relations with clients in the third market. Clearly, this is an area in which effective managerial techniques can prevent such problems from arising.Rapid fluctuations in demand are characteristic of the market for many of the chemical products manufactured under east-west cooperation arrangement. In order to respond to such shifts in demand, the supplying enterprise must remain in close touch with the market, either directly or through its western partner, in order to adjust its production schedules to take these shifts into account. Otherwise it may find itself with large inventories of unsaleable products while its partner may be in the difficult position of hastening to find4nalternativemarket for the amounts no longer required by the target market. In the turnkey-plant sector, partner enterpriese often discover that they derive totally different results from using the same local subcontractors. According to several western plant contractors interviewed, while the eastern partner obtained complete satisfaction from local suppliers, the western partner found little cooperation, forthcoming long delivery delays, and other shortcomings. This difference usually arises in the case of developing countries in which the western firm has no experience and the eastern enterprise may have been active for many years. Obviously in such cases it is recommended that the western firm rely on its partner's established links with local suppliers instead of attempting to deal with them on its own.Consumer goods make under cooperation arrangements and supplied to third markets often pass through a period of poor buyer acceptance, which is due to inappropriate or insufficient packaging. Since many branded consumer goods are distinguished from one another at the point of sale mainly by their packages ,the key to the successful introduction of a new product in a third market is correct assessement of consumer preferences. This assessment can best be carried out in the market-place by using up-to-date techniques for measuring buyer response to package shape, colour and presentation. Which partner should be responsible for conducting such testing, and。

GOING FOR A JOB INTERVIEW COMPANY PROFILE APPEARANCE AND BODY LANGUAGE ARRIVING ON TIME正确答案:A: Personally I think the work in the travel industry as a tour representative is not all sun and sea.In fact it’s often a very hard job.Basically, it involves looking after people when they’re on holidays.I am responsible for sorting out any problems and I often have to deal with complaints. The work also involves entertaining the holidaymakers and their children. The obvious one of the perks is that I get to travel a lot and experience different cultures.I will really value that aspect of the work.I work harmoniously with my colleagues, which brings me fresh air and energy.Frankly speaking, I’d like to work with them and learn from them.B: Generally speaking, if I am going for a job interview, firstly I must arrive there on time as punctuality can give interviewer a good impression.Secondly, I will show my decent appearance with the formal dressing.I will wear a white shirt and a silk tie and have my hair neatly trimmed.Besides I will express myself gently with proper gesture. Finally I will sell myself with professional knowledge and let interviewers know I am a skillful and competitive candidate.Knowing some company history or profile ensures me an easy access to the everyday operation of the company.Every employer, as we all know,is more inclined to hire a good workman, a fast learner. So I will also talk a little about the company history or profile during an interview.涉及知识点:口语SECTION 2 MINI PRESENTATIONS (ABOUT 6 MIN)In this part of the test you are asked to give a short talk on a business topic. You have to choose one of the topics from the three below and then talk for about 1 minute. You have 1 minute to prepare your ideas.2.Discussion—about 5 minutes In this part of the test the examiner reads out a scenario and gives you some prompt material in the form of pictures or words. You have 2 minutes to look at the prompt cards,an example of which is below, and then about 2 minutes to questions related to the topic. For 2 or 3candidates Scenario I’m going to describe a situation. A company is planning to introduce a general training program for new staff.Talk together about the topics the company could include in the program and decide which 3 you think are the most important. Here are some ideas to help you.Prompt material GENERAL TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR NEW STAFF Topics for training Teamwork and competition Company history Company organization Company rules Customer service Product training Health and safety Computer skills Follow—on questions Do you think teamwork and competition is important for new staff?(Why?/Why not?) Do you want to know company history? Do you obey company rules? Do you think company organization is important?(Why?/Why not?) Do you think product training is also important?(Why?/Why not?)正确答案:A: Training is vital if manufacturers are to improve productivity, maximize machine utilization, and achieve optimum equipment performance.Effective training also impacts positively on the reduction of scrap and rework, and helps boost employee confidence.B: I consider computer skill one of the most important skills in this developed world, and everything is connected with the computer operation. So new staff should learn how to operate on the computer.A: Undoubtedly, working as a member of a team is one of the most important factors for a successful career. In modern society we must learn to communicate and cooperate with others.B: Certainly. That is why we often say the whole is better than the parts. And that is why we value team spirit so highly.Secondly as we know, customer is the God.Our customer service is the lifeline of our company and decides its future. Finally there is a saying in China—Health is the basis of everything. We also cannot miss the importance of health and safety.A: Yes, I couldn’t agree more.Although I know that there are no guarantees in life, yet job safety and security is really very basic to us.Personally I think true job security comes only from making meaningful contribution to the company. And also it is important for the company to set up a training program on company rules. We know that flexible rules are a direct result of an increasingly dynamic and fiercely competitive business climate where process agility and responsiveness to changing conditions are key.In other words, business processes “process “ rules and business rules “rule “ processes.B: Yes, you are quite right.Follow-on questions Yes, I think teamwork cannot only collect our selected ideas and power into one project but also make us work hard together. And competition is a source of motivation which drives us to unleash our potentiality.I do think it is necessary, since we are playing proper roles as members of the company. So knowing company history will deepen our understanding of that role.It is necessary to obey company rules as the company is like a machine.Everything can be well done on the base of orderly running of each part.Employees like the parts of the machine need to obey the rules to get it well organized.I think company organization is really important especially for the company management.Every department needs a head under whom we get our work divided and work effectively.Personally I think producttraining can polish our eyes for different products and their advantages and disadvantages. With this knowledge we can know how to sell the products to our customer and to tell different characteristics.涉及知识点:口语。

That, at least, is the conclusion of new research examining how satisfied secretaries are in different sized firms. "We have found that people who work for small or medium-sized companies work harder and are more committed," says David Smith, author of one of the latest studies in this field. "The smaller the environment, the bigger the part you play as an individual and the more people notice your absence. "However, smaller companies can be more flexible when it comes to working hours, and have better working conditions. But working for a smaller firm is no without its disadvantages. But that's a welcome relief!"Isn't it hard being self-employed? "The biggest danger when you become self-employed is saying "yes" to everything," Sally says.
