Music speaks louder than words and it is a “language” that the whole world can understand. A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways.I have listened to music all my life. When I was twelve years old, the Beatles came to America and my whole world opened up. Maybe young people today cannot understand the influence of the Beatles when they exploded across America. Their influence changed the way we dressed, looked, acted and spoke... even our culture. The Beatles arrived in America from the UK just under three months after the assassination(暗杀) of President John Kennedy, which had put America into a great depression. And the freshness and lively spirit of the Beatles was exactly what the country needed to refresh itself.Music links the heart of the hearer with that of the composer. This means that it mixes the spirit of the composer with your spirit when you listen to it. And the music can take your spirit out of your body and transport you into another world. Music has a great way of touching people. Music can make you laugh, cry or shout. It's also a great source of inspiration.Try this one day and notice what happens: make yourself a cup of tea, sit on your sofa and play one of your favorite songs. Close your eyes, and soon you'll find yourself creating vivid mental images—matching the music that you are listening to.25. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.A. has been influenced by the BeatlesB. enjoys drinking tea in his spare timeC. admires President John Kennedy very muchD. likes to match his own feeling with that of the composerCClimbing the corporate ladder (晋升) during my 32 years at Southern Bell (now AT&T) never appealed much to me. But climbing telephone poles? Now that's a whole different story. In 1978, I became the first female lineman in Columbus, Georgia. I really enjoyed the work, and most of the men accepted me because I worked hard at it. I think that at first, they didn't think I could do it. But I got right in there and proved myself.I was a lineman for about three years. Then l went on to work at other outdoor jobs at the company before l retired in 1997.I decided to become a lineman because I wanted to work outdoors. I was a tomboy (假小子) as a child and even built my own tree house, so you could say I had a little experience. My husband, William, encouraged me to give the job a try. After work, I liked to drive around town and show him the wires I'd spliced (加固) that day.People were surprised to see a female lineman. They'd say, ‘Look, that's a woman up that pole.’ One day I heard a man say, ‘Oh, look, there's a telephone man-woman!’ Safety belts and hooks minimized the risk of falling, but concentration was essential. Sometimes I felt a little nervous, but the guys told me I was less likely to fall if I wasn't too confident. It helped that I was strong, because the cables and equipment are heavy. I'm not sure every woman could have done what I did. 1 took a lot of pride in it.29. Are the directionally challenged just bad learners? Not all of your navigational (导航的)skills are learned. Research shows that your sense of direction is innate. An innate ability is something you are born with. Your brain has special navigational neurons(神经)—head-direction cells, place cells, and grid cells (网格细胞)—and they help program your inside compass when you’re just a baby.In 2010, scientists carried out an experiment to study baby rats’ neural activity in their brains. Although the rats were newborns, the researchers discovered that their head-direction cells (which help them recognize the direction they’re facing) were fully grown and developed. The rats, it seemed, were born with a sense of direction. And they hadn’t e ven opened their eyes yet!Humans, of course, are not rats. But the hippocampus—the brain area we use for navigation—is similar in most mammals. If the rat’s compass develops this way, then it’s likely that a human’s compass does, too.If we’re born with a sense of direction, then why are some people so good at getting lost? The scientists found that the two other cells—place and grid cells—developed within the first month. Place cells are thought to help us form a map in our mind, while grid cells help us navigate new and unfamiliar places. The two cells work together, and that’s where the trouble might be.People who took part in a 2013 study played a video game that required them to travel quickly between different places. Monitoring their brains, the scientists found that grid cells helped the gamers recognize where they were—even without landmarks. According to researcher Michael Kahana, differences in how grid cells work may help explain why some people have a better sense of direction than others.32. What did the 2010 research find?A. Rats have a natural ability to recognize directions.B. Rats’ hippocampus is different from that of humans.C. Rats usually find their way without opening their eyes.D. Baby rats have as many head-direction cells as grown-ups.33. What do we know about our navigational neurons?A. Place cells let us know how to read a map.B. Grid cells help us reach the place we are going to.C. They help us use a compass when we lose our way.D. Place and grid cells grow later than head-direction cells.34. Why are some people so good at getting lost?A. They can’t remember landmarks.B. Their grid cells can’t work very well.C. They are unfamiliar with new places.D. Their ability to follow directions is poor.35. What is the text mainly about?A. Human navigational skills.B. The compass in rats’ body.C. Why grid cells are useful.D. How homing pigeons work.第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

I don’t know how I’m going to pay that bill,” Mangano says. But she had a special ability for seeing the obvious thing. She knew how hard it was to mop the floor. “I was tired of bending down, putting my hands in dirty water, wringing (拧) out a mop,” Mangano says. “So, There’s gotta be a better way.”How about a “self-wringing” mop? She designed a special tool you could twist in two directions at once, and still keep your hands clean and dry. She set out to sell it, first a few at flea markets. Then Mangano met with the media. But would couch potatoes (电视迷) buy a mop? The experts on shopping TV were less than certain. They gave it a try, and it failed. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to fatigue. Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband (腕带). The device, worn by drivers or pilots gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car journey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel (方向盘). A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound and the driver’s response.Tiredness is directly related to a driver’s response time. Usually, a watchful driver would use about 400 milliseconds to respond, but once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy. In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver’s response continues to slow down, the sounds become more frequent until a nonstop alarm warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible. The device has been delivered to the department’s laboratories f or testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months’ time, are successful, the makers will bring the product to market within about a year.【1】Driver Alert is a device that can .A.keep drivers asleepB.change drivers’ response accuracyC.reduce the possibility of accidentsD.protect drivers when accidents happen【2】What does the underlined word “fatigue” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Illness.B.Tiredness.C.Carelessness.D.Impoliteness.【3】How does Driver Alert work?A.By being used as a nonstop alarm all the time.B.By squeezing the steering wheel on the way,C.By reminding or warning drivers if necessary.D.By being worn on drivers’ hands every moment.【4】What do we know about Driver Alert?A.It must be fixed on the driver’s cars.B.It aims to prevent drivers from sleeping.C.It has gone through testing at laboratories.D.It isn’t available to drivers at the moment4.Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long-term scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes (染色体), called telomeres (端粒), says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.Telomeres are special DNA sequences (序列) which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person. In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children’s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres-in cells obtained by wiping the insides of their cheeks-at ages 5 and 10.Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says. The study confirms a small but growing number of studies suggesting that early childhood a adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.【1】The new study found that .A.hardship can change a child’s memoryB.violence can speed up a child’s agingC.violence leaves scars on a child’s mindD.hardship has an effect on a child’s mind【2】What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.Telomeres.B.Children.C.Chromosomes.D.DNA sequences.【3】What can be inferred from the text?A.Violence can cause quick cell death in children’s body.B.Telomeres can help prevent chromosomes from separating.C.Children who have shorter telomeres have heart attacks later.D.Being treated badly will make a child’s telomeres shorten faster.【4】What is the best title for the text?A.Violence and TelomeresB.The Function of TelomeresC.Violence Makes Children AgingD.DNA Influences Children’s Growth二、其他Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. 【1】 One main purpose is to let kids learn how to manage their own money. In a special school for the hearing-impaired (听觉受损的),he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words.Later on, Adrian’s parents d ecided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular school couldn’t take care of a special needs students. His parents were determined to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work everyday because they wanted to prove that, given the opportunity, he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace (节奏)was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn’t always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers,“Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop. ”In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, "Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile."People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,”they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here. ’’You say,“Yes,but how many miles away is it?”They don’t know. It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say,Sorry, I have no idea. But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don't know." People in Yucatan believe that “I don't know" is impolite. How Americans Began to Eat TomatoesPeople have strange ideas about food. For example, the tomato is a kind of very delicious vegetable. It is one of the useful plants that can be prepared in many ways.It has rich nutrition and vitamins. But in the 18th century,Americans never ate tomatoes. They grew them in their gardens because tomato plants are so pretty. But they thought the vegetable was poisonous(有毒的).They called tomatoes “poison apples”.President Thomas Jefferson, however, knew that tomatoes were good to eat.He was a learned man.He had been to Paris, where he learned to love the taste of tomatoes. He grew many kinds of tomatoes in his garden. The President taught his cook a way for a cream of tomato soup. This beautiful pink soup was served at the President’s party. The guests thought the soup tasted really good. They never thought their President would serve his honored guests poison apples.Jefferson never spoke to his honored(忠实的)guests about the fact.1.After you read the passage, which of the following do you think is true?A.Americans never ate tomatoes after they began to plant them.B.Americans didn’t eat tomatoes in the 18th century.C.Even now Americans don’t eat tomatoes.D.In the 18th century Americans ate a lot of tomatoes.2.The passage tells us that Jefferson was a president who learned to love the taste of tomatoes .A.while he was in ParisB.when he was a little boyC.because his parents told him soD.from books3.According to the text, cooked the beautiful pink soup at the President’s party.A.the President himselfB.a French cookC.the President’s cookD.the President’s w ifeBIn summer, millions of people will head for the beach. And while the ocean can be a great place to swim and play,it may also be useful in another way. Some scientists think that waves could help make electricity.“Have you ever been on a surfboard or b oat and felt yourself being lifted up by a wave?Or have you jumped in the water and felt the energy as waves crashed over you?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.“There is certainly a lot of energy in wa ves.”Scientists are working on using that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean.“The winds start out by making little ripples(波纹)in the water, but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,” Taylor said.“Waves are one of nature’s ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.”When waves e towards the shore, people can set up dams or other barricades to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine(涡轮).The turbine can then power an electrical generator(发电机).The United States and a few other countries have started doing research on wave energy, and it is already being used in Scotland. The resource is huge.We will never run out of wave power.Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil and coal.Oceans cover three quarters of the earth’s surface. That would make wave power seem perfect for creating energy around the world. There are some drawbacks, however.Jamie Taylor said that wave power still cost too much money. He said that its effects on animals in the sea were still unknown.Plus, wave power would get in the way of fishing and boat traffic. With more research, however,“Many of these problems might be overe,” Taylorsaid.“Demand for energy to power our TVs and puters, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is growing quickly throughout the world.Finding more energy sources is very important, for traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may run out some day.”In the future, when you turn on a light switch,an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!4.Which of the following is NOT true?A.Wave power doesn’t cost too much money.B.Wave energy is so clean that it doesn’t create the same amo unt of pollution as other energy sources.C.Wave power affects fishing and boat traffic.D.Wave power may affect marine animals.。

Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co —operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transportingimportant minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.“We didn’t take any notice of it.” Simard says sadly. “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.28.
