The White Stones
Before Reading
1 1 b 2 c Students may know or guess the answer to question three. It is not ‘c’ because they put dead people in the tomb. The best answer is ‘a’ (nobody knows). 2 Do not tell students the answers. They will find out as they read that the answers are: a b (probably Ruth does) c (someone is trying to kill archaeologists) d (they can fall on people and kill them)

1 1 A woman. She tells him that people on the island don’t like archaeologists. At the end of the story the police arrest her because she is stealing treasures from tombs. 2 She’s renting the new house. It is by the old house that Chris is renting near some megalithic stones. 3 He sees some writing. It says, ‘Go back to London, Ellison! We don’t want you on our island.’ 4 A red car. It is following him. 5 Some liquid. It is coming from a hole under his car. 6 He sees megalithic cups and knives. 7 The tall man with long black hair (and a red car), and the woman from the ferry. 2 Possible answer: 1 Where are you from? I’m from London. 2 What do you do? I’m an archaeologist. 3 Why are you on the island? I’m studying megalithic stones. 4 Where are you staying? In the old house near some megalithic stones. There’s a new house next to it. 5 Who is the tall man? I don’t know who he is but I think he’s trying to kill me. I first saw him when a tree fell in front of my car. The next day he followed me. He tried to make me drive very fast down a hill on a bad road. I went into the tomb at Clayonag and somebody closed the door behind me. Then he made a hole in my car to make it dangerous. I saw liquid coming from the hole, so I phoned a garage. I came home early today and he threw a big stone at my car windscreen. I stopped the car and got out. He ran after me but he ran away when the stone fell on Sarah. I think he wanted the stone to fall on me.
