Unit 4The Incredible Shrinking EuropeExercises1. Answers to the questions on the text:1) What was the dream that the Europhiles were familiar with?Their dream was to make E.U. a newly emboldened world power stepping up to calm trouble spots, using aid and persuasion where it could, but prepared to send in troops when it had to.2) Why does the passage say that Europe is a remarkably good place to live? Because Europe is more stable, safe, green and culturally diverse than most parts of the world and a quality life can be guaranteed in E.U. states.3) Does the good life at home make Europe strong abroad ? Why?No, a good life at home doesn’t mean a strong Europe abroad. Because the E.U. may have all the soft-power credentials in the world, but on the grand stage it has lacked the weight and influence of others on some big issues.4) What do Critics think of the selection of Herman Van Rompuy and Catherine Ashton as Europe's President and Foreign Minister? They consider the selection as symbolic of a lack of vision and it means the grouping will have to reconcile itself to five years of underperformance.5) What can be listed as E.U.’s achievements in the years around 1980s according to the passage?By extending an area of peace and liberal government to the east, the E.U. has done much to calm a part of the world that not long ago was the cockpit for murderous rivalries.6) In what way can Europe realize its own dreams and those of others according to the passage? It has to act as a true single bloc and win others to its side.7) Why does the German government face enormous domestic challenges in admitting its forces in Afghanistan are there to fight, not to be humanitarian workers in uniform ?Because one of modern Europe's most cherished convictions is that the force of arms rarely settles political disputes for long and European public opinion in the 20th century seems unwilling to commit to the war in Afghanistan for the long haul.8) What roles did Germany play in Europe in the 20th century? For the last half of the 20th century, Germany was at the heart of the European experiment. But since the end of the Cold War, it has stepped back from the E.U. and begun strengthening ties with Russia.9 What are the advantages for E.U. to be chosen as the White House’s partner? The advantages are that Europe is rich and democratic, and its values are closer to those of the U.S. than those of anywhere else.2. What are the options for Japanese companies who intended to go global?
Part of the reason is regulatory hangover from the post-war period. The Japanese firms have been so busy with the domestic crisis that they have forgotten to remain connected with the rest of the world.
There are several options for Japanese firms: to achieve global scale through domestic and foreign acquisitions, to move into high-value specialist products, to adopt a regional strategy focusing on Asian market, to form a global alliance with a foreign firm.
The links between policies are even significant in terms
of the world’s financial and capital markets, as witnessed everyday when the reverberations on any one stock market are felt across the globe. At the

Chapter4 The Incredible Shrinking Europe It was supposed to be the moment Europe grew muscles.

The dream didn’t last a month.

Some most frequently asked questions in job interviews:
What did you like or dislike about your previous job?
I enjoyed the people I worked with. It was a friendly and fun atmosphere and I actually enjoyed going into work each morning. I felt the leadership team was great as well. They knew all of their employees on their employees„ first name basis and tried to make those personal connections. One of the reasons I am leaving is that I felt I was not challenged enough at the job. After being there for so many years, I felt I was not able to reach my full potential because of the lack of challenge. I feel my skill can be better utilized elsewhere, where my capabilities are more recognized and there is the opportunity for growth.

Step One

First, read Material One under teacher’s instructions. Then teacher gives hints or tips for reading. Finally, teacher checks the answers and gives explanations.
To make them even more accessible, the Incoterms-for the first time-will be translated into 20 languages, in addition to the official English. Incoterms 2000 also tries to instill clarity by defining the meaning and usage of such terms as "shipper" and "customs clearance," a feature that was absent from earlier versions. Another improvement is that the authors used the same expressions that appeared in the 1980 United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods.
Step Two

Students read Material Two themselves firstly. Then teacher checks the answers without giving explanations.

Clarification and accessibility, Reynolds says, are the hallmarks of this year's revision. "There is a greater consistency in language ... For example, we tried to use the same words rather than similar ones ... while taking into account linguistic differences in British and American English that could affect the meaning," he notes. The writing style is simpler and more straightforward than in previous versions. These improvements are designed to make the terms more easily understood worldwide.
They specify at which point the risk of loss and/or damage passes from seller to buyer as well as which party pays for specific activities. A buyer and seller who conduct their purchase and sale under one of the Incoterms, therefore, will have a mutual understanding of their rights, costs, and obligations regardless of differences in language and local business practices. Because the business of international trade is ever changing, the ICC updates and amends the Incoterms whenever necessary.
That harmonizes the two most important standards for international contracts and establishes a clear relationship between the Incoterms and U.N. approved practices.
The Incoterms were created in 1936 by the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Today, they continue to facilitate international trade by providing voluntary rules for interpreting the rights and obligations of buyers and sellers under international sales contracts. The Incoterms represent 13 different international trade scenarios. Each term specifies whether the buyer or the seller is responsible for arranging such necessities as export licenses, customs clearance, insurance, inspections, and other obligations.
