There were deep cracks that appeared in the well walls. At least one well had some smelly gas coming out of it. Chickens and even pigs were too nervous to eat, and dogs refused to go inside buildings. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide, and fish jumped out of the water. At about 3:00 am on July 28 1976, bright lights were seen in the sky outside the city of Tangshan and loud noises were heard. But the city’s one million people were asleep as usual that night.河北省东北部的农村发生了一些奇怪的事情。

Unit4 Welcome to the unit & Reading提升能力练一、阅读理解A(2019安徽名校联盟高一上联考)The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet. The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk of non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病)and heart disease.Unfortunately, if people adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as it began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Nigeria and so on.And, a diet bad for human beings is also bad for the environment. As the world’s population grows more forests and tropical areas will become farmland for crops or grassland for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now.Mr. Tillman calls the link between diet. the environment and human health. “a dilemma”, a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.1. David Tillman believes that _________.A. diet. the environment and human health are closely connectedB. the Western diet is the only choice as nations industrializedC. people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart diseaseD. traditional diet is more balanced than the Western diet2. According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from ________.A. transportationB. developing countriesC. agricultureD. developed countries3. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases.B. Overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases.C. The examined information comes from developing countries.D. Industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet.4. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?A. Call on us to protect the environment.B. Warm us of the danger of the western diet.C. Remind us of the importance of health.D. Advise us to have a balanced diet.B(2019北京八一学校高一期中)It was the summer of 1936. The Olympic Games were being held in Berlin. A. beside B. behind C. beforeD. amongⅡ.阅读理解(每题5分,共60分)AIt is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists (存在) between all forms of life. No living thing can exist by itself; it is part of a system in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the nature order, this will in turn almost certainly bring about changes in some other part. The cutting down of forests reduces the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals leads to the widespread poisoning (中毒) of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean hurts life in the sea, while waste gases change the chemical balance of atmosphere and shut out some of the sun's necessary life-giving rays. And so we could go on, adding more examples, until in despair (绝望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control and keep within limits these harmful human activities. Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate need, but he is not so clever at looking far ahead, or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be. Man may well destroy himself in his attempt (企图) to be too ambitious (野心).21. The young men were unable to stay still and longed for a sport that was both exciting and interesting. After thinking over how to fill this blank, Naismith snatched some peach baskets, threw them a football and told them to go play. And so they did, nine to a side, wearing wool pants and turtlenecks (高领毛衣). Basketball was officially born, in a form that is hardly recognizable today. The game that celebrated its 100th anniversary Saturday has been quite popular. Those who have watched and played and coached (训练) basketball realize Springfield's importance in their sport's history. For it was the place where the game originated. For Larry Bird, the game of basketball was born in a small town called French Lick, Indian-a, where, walking to his grandmother's house from school every day, he passed a court full of older, stronger players. Mosttimes he was too cold and hungry to play. Most times he played anyway, until the game became his great interest and his lifeblood.Earvin Johnson had never heard of French Lick as a child. He was sure the game of basketball was invented in East Lansing, Michigan, where, after helping his father collect rubbish in the morning, he would seize an old plastic basketball and shake off the cold by shooting jumper after jumper. After a while, a warm feeling would come upon him, in spite of the snow.29.___________ was probably a teacher or a coach.A. Larry BirdB. Earvin JohnsonC. Earvin Johnson's fatherD. James Naismith30. They say it is not right for women to be paid less than men for the same work.People who are against the view (mainly men) have an answer to this. They say that men have more responsibilities (责任) than women: a married man is expected to earn money to support his family and to make important decisions, so it is right for men to be paid more. There are some people who hold even stronger views than this are against married women working at all When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children are given no attention to. If women are encouraged by equal pay to take fulltime jobs, they will be unable to do the things they are best at doing: making a comfortable home and bringing up children. They will have to give up their present position in society. This is exactly what the women want to give up. They want to escape from the limited place which society expects them to fill, and to havefreedom to choose between a career and home life, or a mixture of the two. Women have the right not only to equal pay but also to equal chances. These women have expressed their view strongly by using the famous saying, "All men are created equal. As there were two of us, we went by car as far as we could and then walked the rest of the way. When we arrived, we both sat down and I started to fish. In two hours I caught nothing. "Why don't you show me what to do and let me try?" asked my wife. "All right," I replied. She caught six big fat fish in half an hour. "I'll take them home and cook them for lunch. You can get the bus home," she said. I stayed by the river but caught only an old shoe. I arrived home feeling a little angry with myself. I am supposed to be the fisherman in the family! The scientists, F. Jeffrey Martin and William L. Kubic Jr. , are pro-posing a concept(概念), which they have named Green Freedom, for removing carbon dioxide from the air and turning it back into gasoline. The idea is simple. Air would be blown over a liquid solution (溶液) of potassium carbonate, which would absorb the carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide would then be put to chemical reactions that would turn it into fuel: gasoline or jet fuel. This process could change carbon dioxide from an unwanted, climate-changing pollutant into a vast resource for renewable fuels. The cycle—equal amounts of carbon dioxide produced and removed — would mean that cars, trucks and airplanes using the synthetic (合成的) fuels would no longer be contributing to global warming.Although they have not yet built a synthetic fuel factory, or even a small model, the scientists say it is all based on existing technology. "Everything in the concept has been built, is operating or has a close cousin that is operating," Dr. Martin said. The Los Alamos proposal does not go against any laws of physics, and other scientists who have independently suggested similar ideas. Dr. Martin said he and Dr. Kubic had worked out their concept in more detail than previous proposals. There is, however, a major fact that explains why no one has built a carbon-dioxide-to-gasoline factory: it requires a great deal of energy.According to their analysis(分析), their concept, which would cost about $ 5 billion to build, could produce gasoline at an operating cost of $ 1. 40 a gallon and would turn economically practical when the price at the pump hits $ 4.60 a gallon.Other scientists said the Los Alamos proposal perhaps looked promising but could not evaluate(评价) it fully because the details had not been published."It's definitely worth pursuing," said Martin L Hoffert, a professor of physics at New York University. "It's not that new an idea. It has a couple of pieces to it that are interesting. "58. What is the idea of the project being discussed in the passage?A. Recycling the carbon dioxide from cars back into gasoline.B. Create a new gasoline that gives off very little carbon dioxide.C. Using a special liquid solution to absorb carbon dioxide from cars.D. Build synthetic fuel factories to remove carbon dioxide from the air.59. What's the name given to the new concept?A. Synthetic Fuel.B. Green Freedom.C. Renewable Fuel.D. Carbon -dioxide -to -gasoline Factory.60. Which of the following is NOT one of the benefits of this new concept as suggested in the article?A. Reduction of global warming.B. Cheaper gasoline for cars.C. Longer life of cars.D. Less pollution of the atmosphere.DWhat science fiction once told of other worlds far away, is now a fact. Astronomers prove the existence of another solar system like ours with some planets in the constellation Andromeda(仙女座) .Geoffrey Marcy is a professor of astronomy and physics at San Francisco State University and says, “What we have found now, for the first time ever, is indeed a fully -grown system of planets around the star Upsilon Andromeda, in which there are three planets, one close in, one at a middle distance, and one farther out.” The star is slightly larger than our sun. The planets are huge, like our Jupiter (木星)Marcy’s partner in this research, Debra Fischer, describes the solar system, “Here’s the inner planet that goes around every 46 days, the middle planet that goes around every 242 days, and then the outer planet that goes around every three and a half to four years.”Astronomically, it’s not far away, 44 light years. The sun of that solar system, Upsilon Andromeda, is so near and bright that it can be seen by using no equipment during summer and fall. For twelve years astronomers searched the skies in the belief that if our sun has planets around it, surely others do, too. Geoffery Marcy says, “And then starting three and a half years ago, we began finding for the first time planets singly, one planet here around one star.”“When I look up at the stars now at night, I can imagine easily that every one of them has planets around them,” says Debra Fischer. It was the tremble in the star that led Marcy to discover the planets. “The star rocks around due to the gravity of the planet much like a dog owner gets pulled around by a little dog.”Can they support life? We don’t know, because present technology is not advanced enough to determine what the planets are made of. That, Marcy says, is astronomy’s next challenge.61. Which of the following can best show the relationship between Andromeda (A), Upsilon Andromeda system (U) and the three mentioned planets (P) ?A B C D62. What led to Marcy’s discovery of the planets?A. That he found a dog owner was pulled by his dog.B. The tremble of Upsilon AndromedaU A P A P U P U A A U P。
