Unit 1: Cultural DifferencesText A: Understanding Cultural DifferencesPart ICulture Shock and Its EffectsCulture shock refers to the feeling of disorientation and confusion that individuals experience when living in a new cultural environment. It occurs when people are suddenly confronted with unfamiliar customs, traditions, languages, and behaviors that differ from those of their own culture. The effects of culture shock vary from person to person. Some individuals may feel anxious, lonely, or even depressed. Others may become frustrated or irritated by the differences they encounter. These symptoms can have a significant impact on individuals' mental and emotional well-being, making it crucial to develop strategies to cope with culture shock effectively.Part IIAdapting to a New CultureAdapting to a new culture requires an open mind and a willingness to learn and embrace new customs and traditions. It is essential to approach cultural differences with respect and curiosity, avoiding making hasty judgments or stereotypes.Language is often a significant barrier when adapting to a new culture. Learning the local language can greatly enhance communication andunderstanding, enabling individuals to connect with the local community and build meaningful relationships.Part IIIThe Importance of Cultural SensitivityDeveloping cultural sensitivity is vital in today's interconnected world. It involves being aware of and respectful towards cultural differences and understanding that there is no absolute right or wrong. By adopting a culturally sensitive mindset, individuals can navigate cross-cultural interactions more successfully and avoid misunderstandings or conflicts.Cultural sensitivity also plays a crucial role in global business and diplomatic relations. Being knowledgeable about cultural norms and practices can help individuals build trust and establish long-lasting partnerships.Part IVTips for Overcoming Culture Shock1. Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or support groups who have experience living in the same or a similar culture. They can offer guidance and advice on how to cope with culture shock.2. Embrace new experiences: Rather than shying away from new customs and traditions, actively participate and embrace them. This can help foster a sense of belonging and facilitate cultural integration.3. Be patient: Adapting to a new culture takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and others, and remember that adjusting to a new environment is a gradual process.Text B: Cultural Differences in EducationPart IThe Role of Education in Different CulturesEducation plays a central role in shaping individuals and societies. However, the goals and methods of education vary significantly across cultures. In some cultures, rote memorization and obedience to authority are emphasized, while others focus on critical thinking and creativity.Part IIViews on Teaching and LearningDifferent cultures hold diverse perspectives on teaching and learning. In some cultures, the teacher is viewed as the sole authority figure and imparts knowledge to passive students. In contrast, other cultures emphasize student participation and encourage critical thinking and independent learning.Part IIIClassroom DynamicsCultural differences also manifest in classroom dynamics. In some cultures, students are encouraged to speak up, ask questions, and engage in lively discussions. In contrast, other cultures value silence and respect for authority, where students listen attentively to the teacher without interrupting or challenging their views.Part IVEducation and Social MobilityThe role of education in social mobility varies across cultures. In some societies, education is seen as the primary means to improve one's social status and economic opportunities. In contrast, in more collectivist cultures, the emphasis may be on maintaining societal harmony rather than individual achievement.

例如:_____________________________________________〔她目不转睛地看着窗外〕,she told us that our friend Tom had died in the air crash.
Keeping her eyes fixed out of the window;Staring out of the win-low;With her eyes fixed out the window; Her eyes fixed out of the window等。

Unit 2 CulturePassage A Why Digital Culture Is Good for You?The news media, along with social and behavioral scientists, have recently sent out a multitude of warnings about the many dangers that await us out there in cyberspace. The truth of the matter is that the Web is no more inherently dangerous than anything else in the world. It is not some amorphous entity capable of inflicting harmful outcomes on all who enter. In fact, in and of itself, the Web is fairly harmless. It has no special power to overtake its users and alter their very existence. Like the old tale that the vampire cannot harm you unless you invite it to cross your threshold, the Internet cannot corrupt without being invited. And, with the exception of children and the weak-willed, it cannot create what does not already exist...(1) Like alcohol, the Web simply magnifies what is already there: Experts are concerned that the masking that goes on online poses a danger for everyone who is a part of the Digital Culture. Before we know it, the experts tell us, we will all use fake identities, become fragmented, and will no longer be sure of just who we are. Wrong. The only people who feel compelled to mask, and otherwise misrepresent themselves online are the same people who are mysterious and unfrank in "real life"...the Net just gives them one more tool to practice their deceit. As for the rest of us, getting taken in by these people is a low probability. We know who these folks are in the "real world". The Internet does not "cause" people to disguise as something they are not. As for the Digital Culture getting cheated by these dishonest folks, well, there are just as many "cues" online to decipher deception as there are in the "real world". The competent WebHead can recognize many red flags given off by the online behavior of others. Oftentimes the intentions of fellow users is crystal clear, especially over time. When someone is trying to deceive us online, inconsistencies, the essence that they are trying "too hard" or are just plain unbelievable, often come through loud and clear. Likewise, just like in the "real world", a host of other unacceptable tendencies can be readily recognized online. Narcissism (it's all about "meeeee"), those people who have nothing but negativity or unpleasant things to say about others, and those who feel compelled to undermine others and who think they must blow out the other guys' candles in order for theirown to shine can be spotted a cybermile away.(2) The Web can bring out the best in people: Gregarious, frank folks in "real life" usually carry these same traits over to their online life. Most are just as fun-loving online if not more so, as they are at a party, at work, or at the local bar. Though admittedly, some are not quite as much fun to be around without a stiff drink.Shy folks have a "safer" environment online than in the "real world" and can learn to express themselves more freely on the Net (you've never seen anyone stutter on e-mail, have you?) allowing them to gain confidence and communication skills that can eventually spill over into other aspects of their lives. Helpful people in "real life" are often just as willing to come to someone's assistance online asanywhere else.(3) People are judged differently on the Web: On the Internet people are judged by their personality, beliefs and online actions, NOT by their physical appearance. This is good. It not only gives ugly folks an aid, but causes Beautiful People to have to say something worth listening to in order to get attention.(4) People open up more: Many people are opening up a whole lot more these days since they are not required to use their real name and provide their real identity in the Internet.(5) We're connected: Members of the Digital Culture know full well that there is a wealth of important information and life-changing opportunities out there in cyberspace. The Web has opened doors for many of us that otherwise would never havebeen an option. Research possibilities and networking are just two such opportunities.(6) We Learn the Power of Words and to be Better Listeners: With no facial expressions, body language, or physical appearance to distract us, members of the Digital Culture have learned the power of words ... both their own, and others'. We know very well how a simple string of words can harm, hurt and offend, or how they can offer humor, help, support and encouragement. Most experienced members of the online culture have learned to become wordsmiths, carefully crafting the words they use to convey exactly what they mean so as not to be misunderstood. Many of us have also learned to become far better listeners thanks to the Internet. Not only do we choose ourwords more carefully but we (especially those who communicate via email as opposed to chat rooms) are forced to wait until the other person finishes before we can speak or respond.A为什么数字文化对你有好处?

T a s a in r n lt o 评分原则及标准一 2 1 00 年 1 a g -F n e s 月R n e i d r 会议 决定如: 1 )整体 内容和语言均 正确 得 1 ;2 分 )结构正确 ,但 整体意思不确 切、信息不全或用词 不 当得0 5 ;3 .
Unit 4 Creativity
Unit 4 CreativityThe Case for Creativity—Encouraging Children to ThinkCreativity is the key to a brighter future, say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this vital skill in children. If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a product that we now think of as practically essential: masking tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Manufacturing and Mining Company, better known as 3M. At work he developed a sticky-side substance strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to pursue the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew perfected the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake: Now 3M encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking and developing new ideas. It is a strategy that more and more companies are employing and one that experts around the country say we ought to be following with our children, both at home and at school. The feeling is that if we teach them to think creatively, they will be better able to function in tomorrow's society.Creativity's benefits reach beyond music and art. Successful students and adults are the ones who discover a number of ways to approach problems.Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a characteristic of high intelligence. Just because a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce original ideas that are good for something.Unfortunately, schools have not tended to promote creativity. With strong emphasis on test scores and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators sacrifice creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can't recognize ways to apply it to new situations. They may know their multiplication tables, for example, but they are unable to apply them to story problems. In some schools, however, educators are recognizing the problem and are developing new approaches to teaching which should encourage creativity in their students. Some teachers are combining the basics with activities where the students must use their imagination. For example, instead of simply asking WHEN Columbus discovered the New World, teachers might ask students to think about what would have happened if his trip had taken him to New York first instead of to the Caribbean area. With that question, students would have to use what they know about Columbus, what they know about NewYork, and what they know about the Caribbean. Teachers feel that even if the answers seem silly, it's OK, that sometimes being silly is an essential step toward creativity. In the classroom as well as at home, children must have the right to have crazy thoughts, experts say. Then it is up to parents and teachers to work with the children to develop those thoughts into workable ideas. The best strategy is to encourage children by asking them questions, meanwhile praising their ideas and new thoughts. Experts say that it is important to create an atmosphere in which there is no risk in being creative—a place where wild ideas are honored and valued, never scorned or dismissed. There are things that parents can do at home to encourage creativity. They can involve children in decision-making if the problem is appropriate, asking the child for suggestions. Parents can help their children to understand the consequences of various decisions. Parents should also encourage their children to talk out loud about things they are doing. Thinking and language skills are closely related. Talking out loud improves language skills and thinking skills.Having a sense of humor is also important in helping to develop creativity in a child. When parents show a sense of humor, children can see creativity in its purest form. By its nature, humor crosses conventional boundaries and breaks patterns. Creativity often does the same.It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their consequences. Even if it's choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money, but not automatically help them too much if they make the wrong decision. This may be confusing for the child, but that is all right. This is because one of the most important traits of creative people is a very strong motivation to make order out of confusion.

87.The substance does not dissolve in water _______________。

Part VI Translation
87.The substance does not dissolve in water _______________(不管是否加热)。
前半句所给的信息并不重要,考生凭四级词汇知识可以理解substance(物质)和dissolve(溶解)两个单词的意义。
从句知识:尤其让步状语从句,注意复习whether… or…, though, no matter how等表达的用法。
88.Not only ___________________(他向我收费过高),but he didn’t do a good repair job either.
还要考虑的是本句中“not only…but…”
结合后半句的一般过去时形式,我们不得不把助动词did提炼出来,按照倒装结构翻译成“Not only did he charge me too much”或者“Not only did he overcharge me”。
类似的知识点还要注意Never/Neither/Hardly/Scarcely等否定词在句首的倒装情况。
89. Your losses in trade this year are nothing ______________________(与我的相比)。
相比”考查词组知识,四级程度同学应当掌握“compared with”或者“in comparison with”, 但常有考生把“compare with”与“compare to”(把…
90. On average, it is said, visitors spend only _____________________(一半的钱) in a day in Leeds as in London.
显然本句在拿as…as…
根据比较结构中的倍数原则,倍数数字放在最开始,接下去有关于量的as much+n.+as, 因此本句要填入“half as much money”。
91. By contrast, American mothers were more likely__________________ (把孩子的成功归因于) natural talent.
总之,需要填入的部分拼贴在一起就是“to attribute their children’s success to”。
需要熟练掌握用法的还有lead to, result in, result from, be to blame for, be responsible for。
