Composition for referenceNowadays, one of the most serious problems China is faced with is brain drain. While shortages of talent trouble many universities and state-owned enterprises, millions of talented people either emigrate to developed countries or work for foreign companies. At the same time, a big crowd of well-educated people who are determined to follow their footsteps take TOEFL or GRE as their passport to the West. However, people see this phenomenon in different perspectives. Some hold the opinion that China suffers a lot from brain drain. They argue, on the one hand, that brain drain considerably weakens our international competitiveness. On the other hand, they believe that the talent should serve their native country first. In contrast, others highlight the advantages of international exchange and cooperation. They claim that Chinese youths should go abroad to study and gain more experience. What’s more, the long-term benefits will outweigh losses we suffer now. Brain drain poses a challenge. China should go all out to attract talented people in order to better compete in the world. For one thing, decent living and working conditions should be offered to specialists. For another, we have to better develop our economy, which is sure bait for all kinds of talent.。

Economy of the IroquoisThe economy of the Iroquois originally focused on communal production and combined elements of both horticulture and hunter-gatherer systems. The tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy and other NorthernIroquoian-speaking peoples, including the Huron, lived in the region including what is now New YorkState and the Great Lakes area. The IroquoisConfederacy was composed of five different tribes— a sixth was added later — who had bandedtogether before European contact. While notIroquois, the Huron peoples fell into the samelinguistic group and shared an economy similar tothe Iroquois. The Iroquois peoples were predominantly agricultural, harvesting the "Three Sisters" commonly grown by Native American groups: maize, beans, and squash. They developed certain cultural customs related to their lifestyle. Among these developments were ideas concerning the nature and management of property. The Iroquois developed a system of economics very different from the now dominant Western variety. This system was characterized by such components as communal land ownership, division of labor by gender, and trade mostly based on gift economics. Contact with Europeans in the early 1600s had a profound impact on the economy of the Iroquois. At first, they became important trading partners, but the expansion of European settlement upset the balance of the Iroquois economy. By 1800 the Iroquois had been confined to reservations, and they had to adapt their traditional economic system. In the 20th century, some of the Iroquois groups took advantage of their independent status on the reservation and started Indian casinos. Other Iroquois have incorporated themselves directly into the outside economies off the reservation.。

I think it’ll befun to experience a new cultureThe reason for moving is ______?______Picture 2We want to live somewhere warm. We’retired of the snow! The reason for moving is ______?______Picture 3I’m going abroad to study. Nowadays. More and more people are on the move, and this has become a social trend. In China, there are a lot of young people from the countryside moving to work in the cities, especially in big cities in the eastern and southern parts of China. This has already caused some social problems. I give you some time to have a talk about the advantages and disadvantages of people moving within China.Step3: Discussion:1.Have you ever moved to a new flat or a new city? What was the experience like?2.Do you think moving house can change peopl e’s lives in a positive way? Whyor why not?3.Where would you like to move if you could choose a place to move to? Why?For reference1. Recently, my family has moved into a new flat. This is the firsttime my family has moved house since I was born. Everyone in my familyhas been excited. Our new home is much larger than the old one. It is onthe first floor and has a courtyard that is about twenty square metersin size. My grandma, who is in her seventies, is very happy because shedoes not need to climb five floors like she used to in our old house andcan plant some flowers in the courtyard. I also feel very happy becauseI have my own room now and do not share the room with my grandma as I usedto do. My parents allowed me to decorate my room as I wanted I had thewalls in my room painted light blue and stuck some plastic stars on theceiling. When the light is turned off, these stars seem to be shining. There is a park near my new home, so after supper, we sometimes go fora walk there.2. I think that moving house can change people’s lives in both apositive and a negative way. You will meet new people and make friendswith them. However, you may also miss your old friends.3. I would like to move if I have been living inthe same place for a long time because I want to see, learn and experience new things. The place I want togo to is Shenzhen. Shenzhen is a young city, which hasgrown form a small fishing village and is stilldeveloping quickly. With its fast development,Shenzhen needs young people, especially those who have a good education,to work in the many new companies and business there. Therefore, I thinkit is a suitable place for young people like me to live and work. It willbe easier for me to find a job there, and I will have more choices to dowhat I want to do.More questions for you to discuss and practice:1. If you could study or work in a foreign country, which country would you like to study or work in? Why do you want to go there?2. Which do you think is the most suitable place in China for young people to live and work? Why?3. Which country do you think is the most suitable one for people to live in? Why?4. Why do many people from the countryside move to the cities in China? What do you think of the social phenomenon?Resources:Americans in MotionSeveral new reports and briefs releasedby the U.S. Census Bureau provide a glimpseof where Americans are and where they aregoing. A report issued Oct. 30 says thatmore non-Hispanic whites, blacks, Asiansand Hispanics moved to the South between1995 and 2000, resulting in a net populationgain in that region, while the Northeastexperienced a net loss. But the report,Migration by Race and Hispanic Origin: 1995 to 2000, says the loss was not uniform within New England. For instance, New England witnessed a net gain of individuals identifying themselves as Asian or Hispanic, but saw a net loss of non-Hispanic whites and blacks. Nonetheless the population loss in the Northeast was more than made up for by new immigrants.Similarly, a population gain in the Midwest largely was attributable to Hispanic migration, which countered a net loss among non-Hispanic whites, blacks and Asians.According to the report, non-Hispanic whites were the least-mobile group with only 43 percent having changed residences, while Hispanics were the most mobile with 56 percent reporting a change. About 120 million (46 percent) of the nation's population 5 years of age and older resided ina locale other than the one in which they lived in 1995. Nearly 35 percentmoved to another residence in the same county or to another county within the same state.Step4: Homework:1.Summarize the reasons people have for moving.2.Prepare the Reading part.。

Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural(文化的)difference, not an economic (经济的)one.Knowing your own psychological(心理的)space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home.If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are,if you have two children or more, that you also will offer separate bedrooms for them.In America, for example, they train people to want to have their own rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very rare in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in a bed near them. The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other and the size of their house has nothing to do with it.Others have separate little corners where family members go to be alone.Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed a little because of economic pressures. It is almost impossible, however,to completely change your psychological space needs.1.The first sentence in Paragraph 1“Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space” means “____ ”.A.No two people need exactly the same amount of living spaceB.The world requires the same amount of living spaceC.Nobody needs a required amount of living spaceD.Living space requirements are not always the same2.Some families gather closer to each other at home than others because ____.A.it satisfies their psychological space needsB.they have limited living spaceC.they are brought up in a large familyD.the children in the family sleep in the same bed with their parents3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.People in various countries demand different psychological space.B.Americans are trained to live in large rooms at birth.C.Economic situation decides one's amount of space needs.D.Knowing your psychological space needs is important,as it affects your future.4.The best title for the passage is ____.A.American Way of LivingB.Space Needs in Different CountriesC.Psychological SpaceD.Psychological Space and Economic Pressure答案:D A A C。

SENTENCE EXPLANATIONS1. The national average is only about 12.7 percent, so it is not surprising that Florida is known as the oldest place in the USA. (P18)【
The national average is only about 12.7 percent是主句;从属连词so引导的是结果状语从句,其中it是形式主语,真正的主语是that引导的主语从句,介词短语in the USA作地点状语。

2. Most agree, however, that they like the climate in Florida, which, apart froma few hurricanes, is warmer than in other places. (P18)【
主句是Most agree ...。

Cities containthe very best side of a society:opportunities foreducation, employment and so on. They also contain thevery worst parts of a society:violent crime, racialdiscrimination and poverty. American cities are changing, just as American society. After Wor ld War Ⅱ, the population of most large American cities decreased; however, the population in many Sun Bolt cities increased. Los Angeles and Houston are cities where population increased. This population moving to and from the city reflects the changing values of American society.During this time, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, city people became wealthier. They had more children. They needed more space. They moved out their flats in thecity to buy their own houses. They bought houses in the suburbs, areas near a city where people live. These are areas without many offices or factories. During the 1950s the American “dream” was to have a house on the outskirts. Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in the 1950s are now adults. They, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. Some continue to move to cities in the Sun Belt. Cities are expanding and the population is increasing in such states as Texas, Florida and California.Others are moving to more established cities of the Northeast and Midwest, such as Boston, Baltimore and Chicago. Many young professionals, doctors and lawyers are moving back into the city.

Unit2 People on the move
Young adults give many different reasons for moving to cities.
Older Americans are on the move.2.
For decades, Florida has been attracting older residents. In fact, according to the national population survey conducted in 2000, Florida was home to the largest population of people aged 65 and older.
可使用的过渡词语包括for example, for instance, furthermore, first, second, third, on the other hand, however, but和also。
Florida is a popular choice for these people because of the climate and the state’s relatively flat landscape. However, as the number of older Americans moving there increases, more changes are made to cater to them. For example, ambulance response time has been decreased, and many houses have bathrooms designed for elderly homeowners, with things like walk-in bathtubs that reduce the risk of slips and falls.3.
