Everyone knows that death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two stages — clinical or temporary death and biological death. Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have stopped functioning, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be saved. Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital ce lls and tissues. Death is then unchangeable and final.Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling the organism, combined with narcotic (麻醉) sleep. By slowing down the body’s metabolism (新陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death. To show how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began taking blood out from an artery (动脉). The monkey’s blood pressure decrea sed and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in. For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous (自发的) breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin (青霉素) injection, Keta seized the syringe (注射器)and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.1.For a person who suffers from the clinical death _________.A. he is still very much aliveB. he cannot avoid final deathC. his most important organs are damaged foreverD. he still has the possibility of getting back to life2.Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to _________.A. cool the organismB. delay the coming of biological deathC. slow down the body’s metabolismD. bring vital cells and tissues back to active life3.The text mainly talks about _________.A. clinical death and biological deathB.an experiment on a monkeyC. the meaning of deathD. the process before death4.From the underlined sentence in the last paragraph we can know that _________.A. Keta was impoliteB. Keta was healthyC. Keta was illD. Keta was crazy【文章大意】本文主要叙述了为了延缓生理死亡的到来,科学家尽量延长临床死亡的时间。

2019版高考英语一轮巩固达标练Unit3Traveljournal(含解析)新人教版必修1

3 Travel journal李仕才***阅读理解Nowadays more and more people are talking about genetically modified foods ( GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modified organisms (有机体), which have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposed to chemicals to create a nonspecific but stable change. For many people, the hightech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical, health and safety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, the idea seems against nature. In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more than half the cotton grown in the U. S. last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The genetic genie is out of the bottle. However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foods must be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods to choose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fastgrowing and underfed populations, the matter is simpler and much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks? The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world's population reached 6 billion. The UN states that nearly 800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women of childbearing age don' t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defeats. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness. How can biotech help? Genetic engineering is widely used to produce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologists have developed genetically modified rice and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops.Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortages are caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.1.The passage mainly talks about________.A. the world's food problemB. the development in biotechC. the genetically modified foodsD. the way to solve food shortages2.According to the passage, GM foods________.A. will replace naturally grown foodsB. are far better than naturally grown foodsC. may help to solve the problem of poor nutritionD. can cause serious trouble in developing countries3.The underlined sentence “The genetic genie is out of the bottle.” in Paragraph 2 probablymeans that________.A.GM foods are available everywhereB. the technology in producing GM foods is advancedC. genetic technology may have uncontrollable powersD. genetic technology has come out of laboratories into markets4.What's the writer's attitude towards GM foods?A. Enthusiastic.B. Cautious.C. Disapproving.D. Unbelievable.【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了转基因食品及其对人类生活的影响。

According to the ancient Greeks, there are three basic tools of persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos.Ethos is a speaker's way of convincing the audience that he is trustworthy, honest and reliable. One common way a speaker can develop ethos is by explaining how much experience or education he has in the field. After all, you're more likely to listen to advice about how to take care of your teeth from a dentist than a fireman・Pathos is a speaker^ way of connecting with an audience's emotions・ For example, a politician who is trying to convince an audience to vote for him might say that he alone can save the country from a terrible wa匚These words are intended to fill the audience with fear, thus making them want to vote for him. Similarly, an animal charity might show an audience pictures of injured dogs and cats to make the viewers feel pity, so they will be more likely to donate money.Logos is the use of facts, statistics or other evidence to support your argument. An audience will believe you if you have convincing data to back up your claims. Presenting this evidence is much more persuasive than simply saying "believe me5\Although ethos, pathos and logos all have their strengths, they are often most effective when used together. According to a historian, uniforms were introduced into the United States around 1979 to deal with the problems of violence among students.Statistical reports state that only 15% of primary schools and around 10% of secondary schools in the United States have strictly carried out the uniform policy. In recent times it has become the most debated topic among parents and educators, with many critics stating the fact that wearing uniforms has no effect on the thought process of a student nor does it considerably reduce inequality among the masses.Students are instructed to follow certain rules:for boys, pants, shirts with turtlenecks, sweaters and jackets are acceptable, while in some schools, shorts are strictly forbidden;similarly, for girls, long skirts, blouses, pants and flat-heeled shoes are acceptable.School uniforms in other countries such as Thailand,Indonesia,India and Pakistan were introduced during the British colonial period. In these countries, girls in senior schools usually wear broad trousers and boys wear pants and shirts. In preschool though, girls wear skirts and blouses and boys wear short pants and shirts. In other parts like New Zealand and Australia where the British colonial rule was in effect, the uniform system was followed in the public school system. The dress sense closely resembled that of the English students. The purpose of a school uniform is to promote team spirit, discipline and increase equality among all students.Though uniforms have intended to wipe out the discrimination in the weaker section, critics have a different story to say.According to them, uniforms have no such great effect on students. This standardized dress has not helped students remove any barriers and is adding costs to the parents. In many countries, though students' wearing uniforms has produced some positive results,in the United States, the implementation(实施)requires a lot of efforts before we can achieve full success.1.What does the underlined word “masses” in the second paragraph refer t o?A.Schools. B.Parents.C.Students. Unit 3 The Million Pound Bank Note李仕才***阅读理解。

You’re in your office when you learn there’s someone with a gun wandering outside. You can hear gunshots and screams. What do you do?That’s the challenge for users of a new virtual (虚拟)reality program called SurviVR, designed to train employees how to deal with an active shooter situation in the workplace. The program works with HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset released earlier this year.An active shooter situation is when an armed person or people actively shoot in a small, populated area with the intention to kill. There were 20 such situations in the United States last year and 20 the year before, according to FBI statistics, resulting in a total of 231 deaths. This year saw the deadliest active shooter situation in US history, with 49 people killed in a nightclub in Orlando. In the training situation, users have four choices. They can lock themselves in the office. They can hide, perhaps in the office closet. They can run for an exit. Or they can use something in the office—a computer or a cup a pair of scissors-as a weapon to fight the shooter. This is an improvement on standard active shooter training. Gallo says, which typically teachers people to lock themselves in place and hide. The "lock down" method is often ineffective, he says, and has resulted in many deaths in recent years. In the training’s basic level, no one gets killed. But as the trainings become more advanced, players who make a wrong choice be shot. There’s no blood; the screen s imply turns black slowly. If this sounds terrifying, that’s the point, says Gallo. There are plenty of training programs to teach employees how to deal with workplace violence, sometimes involving role play with toy guns. But these trainings are basically games. Gallo says, with employees relaxed and even enjoying themselves. To teach people what they really need to know for an active shooter situation, they need to be scared."SurviVR will take the fear and turn it into confidence." Gallo says.1. What’s the author’s purpose of describing a dangerous scene in Para. 1?A. To attract the readers’ attention on the new virtual reality program.B. To show the challenge that the readers are required to face.C. To warn the readers of the possible dangers in the working place.D. To inform the readers of the correct response in such a situation2. What is the suggested response in the standard active shooter training?A. Fighting the shooterB. Running for the exitC. Using a computer as a weaponD. Locking down3. What does Gallo think of the training programs involving role play with toy guns?A. SearingB. ViolentC. IneffectiveD. Helpful4. What would be the best title?A. A New Virtual Reality Program on Active Shooter TrainingB. What Should You Do When Meeting Gunshots in the Workplace?C. How to Deal with an Active Shooter Situation?D. 2019年【高考】英语一轮巩固达标练题 Unit 3 Travel journal(含解析)新人教版必修1

Travel journal李仕才***阅读理解In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition of each new skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents an d the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they teach, their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.1.Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ______.A. should be avoidedB.is universal among parentsC. sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD. will make him lose interest in learning new things2.In the process of children’s learning new skills, parents ______.A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB. should not expect too much of themC. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD. should create as many learning opportunities as possible3.The second paragraph mainly tells us that ______.A. parents should be strict with their childrenB. parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC. parental restrictions vary, and are not always intended for the benefit of the children aloneD. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation4.In moral matters, parents should _______.A. observe the rules themselvesB.be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC. forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD. consistently ensure the security of their children【文章大意】在孩子的成长过程中,父母的教育与期望值要有一个“度”,不能揠苗助长;同时,父母也要以身作则,为孩子树立一个榜样。

2019高考英语(人教)一轮预热自练巩固题必修3U1及答案***阅读理解。

In many countries, though students' wearing uniforms has produced some positive results,in the United States, the implementation(实施)requires a lot of efforts before we can achieve full success.1.What does the underlined word “masses” in the second paragraph refer to?A.Schools. B.Parents.C.Students. D.Teachers.2.What can we know about the uniform system in Australia according to Paragraph 3?A.The uniform system in the public school follows Britain.B.The Australian students dress more casually.C.The uniform system is the same as that in New Zealand.D.Most Australian students wear school uniforms.3.What's the intention of school uniforms at first?A.To encourage students to be more diligent.B.To improve students' academic achievement.C.To prevent students fighting with each other.D.To promote the equality among students.4.What's the attitude of the critics towards school uniforms?A.Supportive. B.Neutral.C.Negative. D.Factual.【解题导语】本文是一篇议论文,通过介绍美国目前校服的普及情况,讨论了校服的作用,最后指出在某些国家,如美国,校服制度的实施还需要努力。
