In the 1950s, a female swimming athlete set a goal for herself. She decided to swim across the English Channel before she retired. If she could make it, she would be the first person in the world who did it.On that day, she jumped into the sea without any hesitation and swam towards the opposite bank.In the journey, she faced heavy fog, heavy rain and heavy waves. Though she was very tired, she carried on swimming. But in the end, she gave up. And what she didn’t know at the moment she gave up was that the opposite bank was only I mile away.Later people asked her about the reason. And she said: “The reason why I gave up is that I could not see the destination which I was so close to.”Too many success stories have been lecturing us about courage and persistence. But they never told us where to find courage and persistence. You can have courage only when you know where your goal is. You can manage to persist only when you know where your goal is, and prepare yourself well mentally.Courage and persistence never fall from the sky. They come from weighing between input and output.A life without goals is like a ship without a compass. It goes nowhere. There is no courage or persistence in a life without goals.

A(2018年山东省青岛市)Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened(威胁) by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that influences sea animals comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions(爆炸) , ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.Decibels (分贝) measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety five would have the same effect(效果).Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit(限度)of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales(鲸鱼).A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales' ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed. Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. It’s time for them to take action to help ocean animals.( )1. Which of the following is not caused by human beings?A. The noise of industrial underwater explosions.B. The noise of ocean drilling.C. The sound of underwater earthquakesD. The noise of ship engines.( )2. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?A. The same noise measures differently on land and in the ocean.B. Different places may have different types of noises.C. The noises can cause humans to lose hearing.D. There are different kinds of natural sounds in the ocean.( )3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Powerful underwater explosions aren’t harmful to whales’ ears.B. Many researchers are against the noise limit of 120 decibels.C. Noises cannot cause whales’ death.D. The noise limit of 120 decibels would hardly influence the industrial research.( )4. According to the passage, we can infer that scientists will probably .A. work hard to cut down natural sounds.B. stop industrial and scientific research in oceans.C. try their best to make no noise.D. protect ocean animals from harmful noises.B (2018·四川自贡)June 7th is a big day for students in China if they want to pass Gaokao and enter a university. Anothergroup read about the scientists' personal struggles, like Einstein's running away from Nazi Germany. The third group read about the scientists' intellectual struggles,as they tried different experiments—and failed. As it turned out,the students who had read about scientists' struggles, whether personal or intellectual, had higher grades than students who had read about achievements. Those who weren't getting good grades to begin with gained the most. Those in the control group not only didn't see a grade increase, they had lower grades than the grading before the study began.“We think that struggle stories showe d scientists' weaknesses,” the researchers write,“which creates a sense of connection between the students and scientists. But then we remember. We have to look at the AmericanCollege Test(ACT) exercises one more time. Half asleep,we run downstairs to get the ACT book, and start studying. After this we finally get to turn off the lights and drift away to sleep. And then six hours later,we do it all over again. In my health class,my teacher told us that teenagers need at least eight to nine hours of sleep each night. The sad truth is,with so much to do every day, high school students cannot keep to this sleep schedule(安排).Let me ask you all a question: Doesn't it seem more humane(人道的) to give a teenager perhaps two hours of homework each night? This would allow us to have the eight to nine hours of much needed sleep. Or does it seem better to pile students with five hours of work a night? It leaves us very little time to relax, therefore reducing the time that we can sleep. In my opinion, the present structure(结构) of the junior year of high school doesn't work well. 2019年中考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案:小岛经历各位读友大家好,此文档由网络收集而来,欢迎您下载,谢谢I spent a lot of time making a large shelf for my cave. I found a big tree and chopped it down. This took three days. Then, I chopped off the branches. This took another two days. After that, I chopped the wood away from one side, and then from the other side. This took more than one month. Altogether it took forty-two days. In England, two men with a good saw could have made six of these shelves from that tree in half a day.I also spent a lot of time looking after my corn and rice crops. I had to protect them from wild animals and birds, so I made a fence around them. I shot some ofthe birds and hung them up near the corn. After that, all the other birds stayed away.I used one of the old swords I had taken from the ship to cut down the corn when it was ready. I was very proud of my corn and rice and worked hard to increase my crops. A few years later, I would have enough corn to make bread. I had to find a way to grind the corn into flour, but the rocks on the island were not hard enough. I finally discovered that a very hard piece of wood would do. I used some cloth to separate the meal from the husks. Not having anoven, I made some square pots with lids and covered them with hot ashes. This baked the dough, and I had bread! I made my cave bigger again to hold the corn and flour so that I could make bread whenever I needed to.I sometimes wondered how I could get to the land which was visible from the other side of the island. I went to the ship’s boat that was blown onto the beach in the shipwreck. However, I could not get it to the water. It was too heavy. I tried many different ways of doing it, but none of them were successful.

抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When (时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。

The mountains are not very high. In China you would probably call them hills rather than mountains as they are less than 1, 000 meters high, but there is something wild about these mountains you get a feeling of space and freedom. You can walk for miles without meeting another person.Northumberland is full of history. There are seven castles, some of them were ruined and the others still there as they were centuries ago. You can find graves going back to prehistoric(史前的,times and strange carvings on rocks which nobody understands. The coast line is dramatic too, with beautiful sandy beaches. These beaches are rarely crowded because the weather is unpredictable and the North Sea is very cold! People don’t go for seaside holidays to Northumberland because of the cold sea and weather, so even in high season there aren’t many tourists. There is an island called Holy Island off the coast of Northunberland, you can get to the island by car or on foot when the tide is out. There is also one castle I particularly like. It is a 14th century castle which stands on a cliff right by the sea. The castle is almost completely ruined, but it looks dramatic and romantic because you can still see the gate and two of its owners. On a summer’s day you can lie on the beach nearby and let your mind wander as you look at this dream-like castle. On a winter’s d ay you can walk to the castle and watch the waves crash into the cliff, wondering how this castle has stood so long against the forces of nature.I once said to a friend of mine that I thought this castle by the sea was the most beautiful place in the world. She laughed and said there must be many more dramatic places in the world. In one way, I’m sure she’s right, but for me, it’s not just about what a place looks like, it’s about what it says to you.63.In China people probably call them mountains which are________ 1,000 meters high.A.less thanB.nearlyC.more thanD.almost70. How are the seven castles in Northumberland?A. They are modern and fantastic.B. They are all complete and magnificentC. Some hasn’t changed at all for centuries.D. Some are full of strange carvings.71. Not many people visit the beautiful beach because of ________.A.the soft sandsB.the cold sea and weatherC.the warm seaD.the island nearby72. It looks very dramatic and romantic with two towers but no gate.C. The author can let his mind wander as he looks at this dream-like castle.D. The festival spread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted. Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact,Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial(孝顺的) devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of “Taste Liquid(液体的) Medicine for Mother” tells us the filial virtue(美德) of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mother love is a repeated subject in Chinese ancient poems, like “Song of the Parting Son” by Meng Jiao,a poet of the Tang dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion. On special days, people often use roses or forget-me-notes to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily.Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.( )1. When did Mothers Day spread to China?A. It's a chance for me to get away from real life. There's nothing better than being lost in a story unless,of course, someone decides to break down the moment.Whether at a cinema or a huge theatre, someone usually decides to treat the place like their own home! There is an accepted way of behaving at the cinema which some people don't seem to understand. To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to go past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surround-sound effects, someone begins to enjoy their drinks and popcorn and thus makes a lot of noises. And what I can't stand most is people who decide to chat to their friends, sometimes not even about the film.I'm not alone in this situation. Simon Mayo,a film critic at the BBC,experienced a “new low” during a film. He says,“ The woman in front of me got a mirror out, then her boyfriend got a phone out and used the light on it to allow her to do her make-up!”Simon has helped to create a list of rules on how moviegoers should behave at the cinema. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it's a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday. The exact origin(起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest (神父) on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed_up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a Mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn't open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas. One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers (做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, that is why that day became known as Boxing Day.Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating (捐赠) their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need. At the moment we're staying near Uluru—that's the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometers long and 384 meters high. The colors of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a center of Aboriginal culture. The Australians have many British relatives. That's why they're like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.Although it's December, it's summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback(澳洲内陆) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand. The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me.
