But it was something I had to thing long and hard about before I understood it. But in recent years, scientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people. Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age.This view of bilingualism is remarkably different from the understanding of bilingualism through much of the 20th century. Researchers, educators and policy makers long considered a second language to be an interference, cognitively speaking, that hindered a child’s academic and intellectual development. They were not wrong about the interference: there is ample evidence that in a bilingual’s brain both language systems are active even when he is using only one language, thus creating situations in which one system obstructs the other. But this interference, researchers are finding out, isn’t so much a handicap as a blessing in disguise. It forces the brain to resolve internal conflict, giving the mind a workout that strengthens its cognitive muscles.Bilinguals, for instance, seem to be more adept than monolinguals at solving certain kinds of mental puzzles. In a 2004 study by the psychologists Ellen Bialystok and Michelle Martin-Rhee, bilingual and monolingual preschoolers wereasked to sort blue circles and red squares presented on a computer screen into two digital bins ? one marked with a blue square and the other marked with a red circle.In the first task, the children had to sort the shapes by color, placing blue circles in the bin marked with the blue square and red squares in the bin marked with the red circle. Both groups did this with comparable ease. Next, the children were asked to sort by shape, which was more challenging bec ause it required placing the images in a bin marked with a conflicting color. The bilinguals were quicker at performing this task.The collective evidence from a number of such studies suggests that the bilingual experience improves the brain’s so-called executive function ? a command system that directs the attention processes that we use for planning, solving problems and performing various other mentally demanding tasks. These processes include ignoring distractions to stay focused, switching attention willfully from one thing to another and holding information in mind ? like remembering a sequence of directions while driving.Why does the tussle between two simultaneously active language systems improve these aspects of cognition? Until recently, researchers thought the bilingual advantage stemmed primarily from an ability for inhibition that was honed by the exercise of suppressing one language system: this suppression, it was thought, would help train the bilingual mind to ignore distractions in othercontexts. But that explanation increasingly appears to be inadequate, since studies have shown that bilinguals perform better than monolinguals even at tasks that do not require inhibition, like threading a line through an ascending series of numbers scattered randomly on a page.The key difference between bilinguals and monolinguals may be more basic: a heightened ability to monitor the environment. “Bilinguals have to switch languages quite often ? you may talk to your father in one language and to your mother in another language,” says Albert Costa, a researcher at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Spain. “It requires keeping track of changes around you in the same way that we monitor our surroundings when driving.” In a study comparing German-Italian bilinguals with Italian monolinguals on monitoring tasks, Mr. Costa and his colleagues found that the bilingual subjects not only performed better, but they also did so with less activity in parts of the brain involved in monitoring, indicating that they were more efficient at it.The bilingual experience appears to influence the brain from infancy to old age (and there is reason to believe that it may also apply to those who learn a second language later in life).In a 2009 study led by Agnes Kovacs of the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy, 7-month-old babies exposed to two languages from birth were compared with peers raised with one language. In an initial set of trials, the infants were presented with an audio cue and then shown a puppet on one side ofa screen. Both infant groups learned to look at that side of the screen in anticipation of the puppet. But in a later set of trials, when the puppet began appearing on the opposite side of the screen, the babies exposed to a bilingual environment quickly learned to switch their anticipatory gaze in the new direction while the other babies did not.Bilingualism’s effects also extend into the twilight years. 新东方谢真真:2014年11月08日托福阅读真题智课网整理第一套题第一篇:版本一:生命组成元素elements有很多,主要有氢和氦,还说了一些惰性元素,虽然不同星球元素比例不同但是所须具备的元素都有。

生命必须存在于有atmosphere和liquid的星球,两个条件同时满足,因为atmosphere可以防止辐射,liquid可以让元素之间反应从而形成organic的分子版本二:生命组成元素,element有九十多种,life element包括25种;然后讲了一下heavy element和氢、氦占元素的百分比,古老星球的heavy element百分比很低;地球生物最重要的元素是碳,其他星球具有生命所需的元素,所以可能有生命存在,并且可以based on 碳或者硅或者其他元素;atmosphere和liquid必须存在,有利于元素相互反应,形成生命。

词汇题不太记得了,貌似有一个widespread among第二篇:版本一:美国十九世纪lumber开始是农民卖,后来产业化,还说了technology促进了发展,有方法可以让开采全面进行而不是在冬天停滞,另外有方法解决冬天结冰导致木材搬运不同的问题,还说有铁路建设,尽管有些地方很偏远,但是由于对木材的持续需求建了版本二:讲美国五大湖地区的lumber,在十九世纪开始产业化,技术的发展使木材可以搬运到全国各地,stream水运木材,有一个啥技术可以控制水运的方向,使运输更快速;还有一个是在dry冬天,freeze减少摩擦力,解决冬天木材很难运的问题,可以运很重的木材了;另外就是铁路运输。

其他的细节就不太记得了第三篇:版本一:megafauna为什么灭绝说了一个主要的原因是人类活动,有两人还制作了模型检验,另外一个人支持这个观点,也有什么证据,说有remains在人类活动的地方,后来反驳,说few remains在那个地方,然后前面制作数学模型的人就说这反而能支持他们的观点,但是又有一个人说新西兰也有一个地方的什么动物,灭绝也是因为人类活动,但却留下很多evidence版本二:magafauna灭绝的问题,科学家提出是人类kill的,解释了一下为什么climate不会是灭绝的原因:很久之前有一次climate变化但没导致m灭绝,这次climate变化也不会导致灭绝。

Title: 火对森林植物的影响
大致内容 火对森林的好处,能够加快recycle, 能够打开树冠让阳光进来,让磷等元素更好地被吸收。

通常火都不会烧得很大,因为每次火都烧掉不少可燃物,导致下次着火都没啥可烧的了。

但是由于人类的干涉(灭火政策),使得可燃物大量堆积,所以一着火就是比较严重的。

然后讲到黄石公园,说它有场大火,烧死了很多生物,但也出现了一些之前没有繁荣的植物等。

Passage 2 Title: 欧洲建筑发展
大致内容 首先是希腊和罗马对建筑的影响,然后是一个人重新设计了巴黎的建筑风格,有几个优点:街道宽了,减少交通堵塞,建了广场公园,改善环境和空气质量(有题,五选三)。

接着是一个人提出modern 城市设计的理念,摒弃了以前的观念,趋向于与machine 相似,更实用,把不同区域分离开。

因为成本低,逐渐被大众接受。

Passage 3 Title: Sit and Wait Lizards and Active Lizards
大致内容
讲两种蜥蜴,一种是sit and wait 的,另一种是active 的。

第一段说sit and wait 这种蜥蜴能捕捉快的动物类似beetles 作为食物,而active 的蜥蜴是靠smell 那些隐藏在地表下面的动物,active 的蜥蜴一直在动,它们一般会吃群居动物如白蚁等。

然后说这就是为什么active 蜥蜴吃的东西要比sit and wait 的蜥蜴多(有细节题)。

第二段说它们的猎食方式也和它们被猎食的天敌有密切的关系。

sit and wait 蜥蜴的天敌是active 型的,反之active 型的predator 是sit and wait 型的。

然后讲两种lizard biology 方面的区别,涉及新陈代谢,白细胞红细胞和心脏跳动。

说sit and wait 蜥蜴有a1新陈代谢,有爆发力但是不能维持长时间。

而active 蜥蜴有a2新陈代谢,能够维持长时间。

此外active 蜥蜴因为要sustainable, 所以心脏需要的血液多。
