The levitating(悬浮的) lightbulbThis special lightbulb was invented by US artist and scientist Simon Morris. He got the idea of making a lightbulb float from hoverboards(悬浮滑板), which he used to dream of having as a kid.But the floating is not the most amazing part. The rejection force between the opposite ends of the magnets(磁铁), which were put in the bottom of the bulb and in the wooden base, does the j ob. What’s new here is a technology called induction (电磁感应). It allows the lightbulb to get power from the base even they are not in contact.Shoes that tie themselvesThey’re not what you think—shoelaces that tie themselves in theway we tie them. 课时提升作业三十六选修8Unit 1 A land of diversity(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解A(2017·湖北七校联考) Nearly 19 percent of teachers of color(有色人种教师) left their jobs after the 2014-2015 school year. Some left for personal reasons like taking care of their families. But 50 percent said they left because they were dissatisfied with their employment situation, such as poor working conditions, student discipline problems and large class sizes. Thus, taking immediate measures to improve it is our top priority. For years, researchers have proved the benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools, especially as our public school system has turned to one that is made up mostly of minority students. Teachers of color, who are more likely than their white counterparts to choose to work in racially diverse schools, offer particular benefits to their students. Graduation rates increase among minority students whenthey are taught by racially similar educators, research shows. They can also serve as positive role models, and their presence reduces the chance of racial discrimination at school. The Shanker Institute report suggests that the rate of minority teacher hiring is not the whole problem. The problem is what happens after these teachers enter the classroom. These teachers often work in high-poverty rural schools. They are more likely to have less-desirable working conditions.Diversity is a key component to equality and opportunity. Where the re’s a diverse teaching workforce, all kids thrive. So solutions must be found at once to turn this trend around. Firstly, schools should develop mentorship programs that support minority teachers once they are in the classroom. Secondly, more money should be spent in improving working conditions in these schools. Of course, school headmasters should also be evaluated on their ability to retain teachers of color.【文章大意】作者认为学校要留住有色人种教师, 关键是要提高他们的工作条件。

课时提升作业三十七选修8Unit 2Cloning(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解ACloning has the potential to change society. For some, it’s a welcome development designed to make our lives easier. For others, it represents a threat to the health and balance of society, especially from a moral perspective. Looking at these cloning pros and cons, it’s important to consider the scientific, financial, and social aspects of cloning processes. From a scientific perspective, cloning can be considered major progress. Scientists aren’t limited by population. It’s also possible to clone pieces of living things. However, cloning changes the natural order of life and death. Why should scientists have to treat an animal well in the lab if they can just make more? As a result, scientists may become lazy or careless with the living things they work on.Cloning is a major business. Medical research groups have invested millions of dollars in making cloning possible. As a result, they can make big profits from selling cloning services to hospitals and the public. However, the wealth they achieve doesn’t mean that cloning itself is a profitable trial. For example, while a company may clone an organ, its price may be too high to afford. As a result, only rich people and governments could use cloning products. As a whole, cloning for society can be debated for hours. On one hand, you have religious groups, who say that cloning is wrong. On the other hand, you have many people who are looking forward to making clones of themselves so that the clone can serve as a worker and leave the original person to enjoy a life of relaxation and wealth.【文章大意】人们对克隆问题意见不统一, 有人赞成, 也有人反对。

课时提升作业一必修1Unit 1Friendship(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AWe have most friends at the age of 26 after having spent thefirst quarter of our lives building up our friendship circle, a new research has claimed. The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks at 26 years and 7 months, at which we typically have five close friends. Women are most popular at 25 years and 10 months, with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months. The research, by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends when at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25 to 34-year-olds make 22 friends via Facebook, compared to 18 to 24-year-olds who make 12, and 35 to 44-year-olds who make just 4.Forever Friends’ relationship coach Sam Owen says, “It is no coincidence that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. 课时提升作业六必修2Unit 1Cultural relics(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AA group of scientists in the Netherlands recently used high-tech methods to examine a secret hidden inside an ancient Chinese statue. It was sent to the Drents Museum in the northeastern Netherlands as part of an exhibit. But while working on the statue, researchers took the chance to study the body of a Buddhist monk inside it.The statue was shipped to a medical center for CT scans, which are tests that produce X-ray pictures. Scientists used the technology to find out the statue’s hidden secrets. The body of the monk was sitting on top of a roll of cloth marked with Chinese characters. The cloth showed that the monk was named Liuquan and lived around the year 1100.“On the outside, it looked like a large statue of Buddha, ” said Vincent van Vilsteren from the Drents Museum. “What flabbergasted me was that, on the inside, it was the mummy (干尸) of a Buddhist monk. Later we learned that for the first 200 years, the mummy was probably placed in a Buddhist temple. Only in the 14th century did they do all the work to move it into a nice statue. ”Researchers at the Drents Museum still have a lot of questions aboutthe mummy. It is believed to be the only Chinese Buddhist mummy that has been studied outside Asia. Scientists hope that DNA testing on the mummy will help them learn more about it. Further research may dig up more information about the monk in the months to come.【文章大意】本文是记叙文, 介绍了一尊内藏佛僧干尸的古佛像。

课时提升作业 四必修1 Unit 4 Earthquakes(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解 A Zhang Heng(78~139), a native of Nanyang in central China’s Henan Province, was a mathematician, astronomer and geographer of the Eastern Han Dynasty(25~220).Zhang’s greatest contributions were in the field of astronomy. In 123 he corrected the calendar to bring it into line with the seasons. In 132 he invented the first seismoscope. It was in the shape of a cylinder with eight dragon heads around the top, each with a ball in its mouth. Around the bottom were eight frogs, each directly under a dragon’s head. When an earthquake occurred, ball fell out of a dragon’s mouth into a frog’s mouth, making a noise.Zhang Heng was a supporter of the Hun, the ancient theory, which stated that the earth is inside an egg. He wrote, “The sky is like a hen’s egg and the Earth is like the yolk of the egg, lying alone at the center. The sky is large and the Earth is small. ”He also drew a detailed map of the heaven. His chart showed 124 constellations (星群) consisting of a total of 2, 500 stars, 320 of which were bright stars with names. “This is not including those observed by sailors, ” he wrote, “Of the small stars, there are eleven thousand five hundred and twenty. ”However, Zhang Heng was not satisfied with his paper map of the sky. When his charts were completed, he hired craftsmen to build what may have been the world’s oldest three-dimensional models of the heaven. The first globes were made out of bamboo strips, but eventually he had a globe made out of bronze, which was almost five meters in circumference. This in itself would have been a remarkable accomplishment. But Zhang Heng took it one step further. He used the power of water to make his globe complete one rotation every year, showing how the positions of the stars changed from one season to the next.【文章大意】本文介绍了东汉科学家张衡的几项科学发明——发明最早的地动仪、绘制星空图和发明漏水浑天仪。
