The Operaen opened in 2008, designed to provide
a home for the Norwegian National Opera (Den Norske) and the national ballet company and described by the architects as ‘the largest single culture-political initiative in contemporary Norway’.

Oslo, Norway
It is a striking building, sited on the waterfront with the joint aims of providing a venue for Norway’s leading opera and dance companies and of rejuvenating the harbor area in the centre of the city. The main structure slopes down into the water like a ski-slope-an image which is strengthened by the building being clad in white marble-with the horizontal and sloping and offering views across the Oslo Fjord. The overall height of the building is, however, deceiving as just under half of the accommodation lies below sea level.

The main space- Hovedscene- is designed for opera with a horseshoe-type plan and a high ceiling, providing good natural acoustics. The auditorium seats around 1350 in the stalls and in three balconies, stacked almost vertically in order to ensure that the furthest seat is no more than 33m from the stage. Each seat back has its own individual screen enabling subtitles to be made available in eight languages. The interior is simple in treatment using Baltic oak to provide a wall between the public areas and the performance spaces and also for the balcony fronts where is has been hand-carved by Norwegian boat builders to celebrate their craftsmanship.
