确立信息中心:英语句子很注重信息的主次之分,往往把主要信息放在突出和重要的位置,而把次要信息作为辅助性的描写或叙述手段。

汉语的信息重心在许多情况下都不表现在外形上,而是体现在内在的逻辑关系中。

所以汉译英时,应该善于把汉语隐蔽性很强的主次关系挖掘出来,尔后译成英语的主次表达关系。

如不体现这种关系,译文可能平铺直叙,把信息中心淹没于散句之中,既违背了原文意思又不符合英语的习惯表达。

例如:{例1] 他们患得患失,生怕丢掉这些东西。

[分析]此句的两部分表面并列,但内含主次。

后半部分是主要信息,前半部分表示原因。

可译为:Swayed by consideration of loss and gain, they are most anxious to lose these possession.[例2] 春天来了,树也绿了。

Spring coming on, the trees turned green.[分析] 后一句明显是信息重心,“春天来了”只是伴随状态,因此译成了状语结构,译文比较符合英语的表达习惯。

[例3] 这些新政策将使人民的购买力提高,市场繁荣,金融活泼,决不会如一些人所说将使国家财政一团糟。

[分析]“决不会……”显然是次要信息,如果译为并列结构,将冲淡前面的中心部分,使句子太罗嗦。

可采取两种译法:(A)Far from making a mess of the country’s finances as some people argue, these new measures will increase the people’s purchasing power and lead to thriving commercial and financial conditions.(B) These new measures will, we believe, increas e the people’s purchasing power and lead to thriving commercial and financial conditions rather than make a mess of the country’s finances as some people argue.VII Exercise p571.Football in England 英国的足球运动2. Football is, I suppose, the most popular game in England: one has only to go one of the important matches to see this. 我认为,足球是英国最受欢迎的运动;这一点,只要去观看一场重要的足赛便可以看出来。

I suppose 是插入语,汉语中不用这种插入语,译为主句。

this是已知信息最好前移。

3. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting and cheering for one side or the other. 人们可以看到,无论贫富老少,他们都在球场,为这一方或那一方呐喊加油。

原文Rich and poor与young and old之间有and 作连词,表明其跟them有关。

而译文中“无论贫富老少”有被误解为是跟“人们”有关的危险,所以最好移到看到后面。

根据这是描写足球赛正在进行的情况,而不是一方面已经胜利的场面,shouting and cheering 译为“呐喊加油”而不译为“叫喊欢呼”。

Paragraph 24. One of the most surprising things about football in England to a stranger is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. 关于英国足球运动,使外国人最感惊讶的事情之一,就是对于足球运动,连一名很小的小男孩似乎也了如指掌。

a stranger本是“陌生人”,但这里是对一个国家而不是对同一个国家的某个地方而言,故可译为“外国人”。

本句最重要的新信息是the great knowledge,故译文设法将“了如指掌”置于最后。

the great knowledge译为习语“了如指掌”十分地道、到位,如译为“大量知识”有死译之嫌。

5. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams; he has photographs of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. 他说得出绝大多数重要球队球员的名字,保存着他们的照片,了解好多场比赛的结果。

第二个he照汉语习惯省译。

6. He will tell you , with a great air of authority, who he expects will win such and such a match, and his opinion is usually as valuable as that of men three or four times his age. 他还以权威的神气告诉你,他料到谁会赢得某场某场比赛,而且他的看法通常和年龄三四倍于他的大人的看法一样有价值。

第二个and译为“而且”,表示后面的分句内容更重要。

汉语中没有相当英语中替代词that 的词,重复名词“看法”以译之。

Paragraph 37. Most schools in England take football seriously __much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all-important, and games left for private arrangements. 在英国,足球得到多数学校的重视—比欧洲大陆几乎所有的学校都重视得多。

在欧洲大陆的学校里,功课最为重要,而体育活动全由个人安排。

Most schools in England take football seriously中football与in England是已知信息,将二者前移,为此用了表示被动意义的“得到……的重视”。

European 与England 是相对而言,指的是欧洲大陆。

引导的从句最好拆开为另一句。

定语从句译为并列分句:1)We will put off the outing until next week, when we won’t be so happy.我们把郊游推迟到下星期,到那时我们不会这么忙了。

2).Thinking that you know when in fact you don’t is a fatal mistake to which we are all prone.自认为知道而实际上并不知道,这是一个致命的弱点,我们都容易犯这种错误。

3)Nearly everyone knows the story of “the dog that worried the cat that caught the rat that ate the grain that lay in the house that Jack built.”几乎人人都知道这个故事:“杰克盖了房,房里堆了粮,耗子把粮食吃光,猫把耗子抓伤,狗有把猫逼上房。

”8. In England, it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts ina classroom; education also means character training; 在英国,人们认为教育不是在课堂上将知识塞进儿童的头脑就完事了,还意味着培养性格;为避免使用“被”字,it is believed that…译为主动句,需加上泛指主语“人们”。

not only a matter of…译为“……就完事了”比“不仅仅是……的事”顺畅。

9. and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games, 而培养性格的最佳方式之一就是体育活动,尤其是团队活动;10. Where the boy has to learn to work with others for his team, instead of working selfihly for himself alone. 在这种场合,孩子们必须学会跟别人配合,为本队效力,而不是自私自利只为自己。

Where 指in team games, 译为“在这种场合”。

for his team 与后面的for himself alone 对举,是信息中心之一,宜译为“为本队效力”而后置,不宜译为“为了本队”而前置。

11. Football is a good team game, it is a good exercise for the body, it needs skill and quick brain, it is popular and it is cheap: as a result, it is the schools’ favorite game in the winter. 足球是一项很好的团队体育活动,利于锻炼体格,还需要技巧和机智;广受欢迎而花费不大,因而成了学校最看好的冬季体育活动。

主语it多次重复,译文中不必重复。

原文中for the body 与skill and quick brain对称,前者讲“体”后者讲“智”译文必须体现这一点(试比较:“……是锻炼身体的良好方式,需要技巧和机智”)。

这里不是讲商品价格,cheap不宜译为“便宜”“学校”不是个人,favorite 译为“最看好的”,较为适宜。
