Because of different cultural values between China and America, this family got into a lot of trouble. By analyzing this movie, we can easily find the differences of cultural values in many aspects such as literature, habit, education and so on.Key words:cultural values, tradition, differenceIntroduction: After watching this movie, I realize that no matter how long does a person lives in a foreign country, the traditional culture of his own country will never perish from his heart. Because of the different cultures between China and America, something “ridiculous”happened to this Chinese family. As far as I’m concerned, there are mainly 4differences shown in the movie: different education method, different treatment, different laws and different understanding of responsibility.1.Different Parent Education1.1Different attitude towards the fighting between kidsAt the beginning of the movie, Xu Datong’s son Denis and John Quinlan’s son Paul have some little fights when they play video games together. Paul tells his mother that Denis hits him. Although Denis tells his mother that Paul has hit him too, Jane still thinks that it is wrong to hit people no matter who does it first.This is a typical Chinese thinking. Chinese people regard harmony as fundamentality in interpersonal relationship. Even somebody wronged us, we should tolerate and express our idea in a polite and moderate way rather than quarrel or fight with others. But American think in a different way. In American culture, people think that everyone is equal. If someone treats them badly, they will consider it to be infringement against their right. They will return blow by blow.So Xu Datong asks his son to apologize to Paul even though John says it is ok. After Denis’s refusal to apologize, Xu hits Denis on his head. Xu does this for two reasons. Firstly, he also thinks that it is improper to hit other people, and it is also wrong to refuse to apology. In Chinese culture, a father usually treats children strictly. When children don’t listen to them, the simplest and most effective way is punishment. Xu believes that hitting Denis is for his son’s sake to make him a good person. Secondly, he does this to show respect to John. Chinese people care a lot about “face problem”. But American couldn’t understand this.They only care about the truth. They don’t think those could be reasons for beating children.1.2Different educational conceptAfter Xu criticized Denis, Xu’s father said:”You may admonish your children in the presence of others, but your wife, only in privacy.” This traditional Chinese saying shows a Chinese value. It means that you may admonish your children in the presence of others to make your children have a sense of shame.Then kids won’t make the same mistake again. But if your wife makes some mistake, you should tell her in privacy to show her respect. On the contrary, American believe that a child should be treated like an adult because children also have self-esteem just like adults.After Xu’s family goes back to home, Xu apologizes to his son and tells him that he hits Denis because he loves his son. And then the next day, Denis beats Paul again and tells Paul it is because he loves Paul. Apparently, this explanation can’t satisfy Paul’s mother and their teacher. Our Chinese has an old saying, “打是情，骂是爱”。
But Americans couldn’t understand. How can it be a good thing to hit someone? This is ridiculous. From the movie, we can see a total difference between the Chinese parent education and the American parent education.2.Chinese Medicine & Western MedicineGua Sha is a traditional Chinese treatment, which has more than 2000 years of history. According to traditional Chinese medical theory, scraping the skin can stimulate one’s immune system and then help remove disorder. When Denis has a stomachache, his grandfather Gua Sha him to make him feel better. But Western medicine couldn’t understand Chinese medicine, because after dissecting body, they couldn’t find any “Jing”, “Mai”or acupuncture point. They can’t explain Chinese medicine with science but Chinese medicine do works. That’s why doctors are astonished when they see the scratching on Denis’s back. So they think Xu must have abused his son. On the hearing, no matter how hard does Xu try to explain Gua Sha to the chairman, he just couldn’t make it clear. Nobody can understand what ua Sha is. Then things just get worse and worse. It is all because of the difference of Chinese medicine and Western medicine.3.Different lawsIn this movie, Xu Datong’s family suffers a lot because of the America laws.In America, parents can’t leave children alone in the home. If they do, they break the law. But China doesn’t have such laws. I think this kind of law is very important. As we all know, many accidents happen to children in China every year.Many parents leave their children alone in the house. Without any guardianship, some children fell down from a high building or were electrocuted. Those tragedies should have been avoid if China has such laws.In America, children cannot be neglected or abused by their parents. If found, parents have to be sent to court. And usually before the court, there would be a hearing. But during the process, parents cannot meet their children in anycases. And the children will be taken care of by Children Welfare Agency. But in China, the society doesn’t pay much attention to children abuse. And the laws are not so strict on family abuse and neglect. In the movie, Xu thinks that it is ridiculous to prove his love to his son. He thinks it is the responsibility for a father to love his child but now he has to prove it. And he even has to live apart with his wife to get his son back. He couldn’t even meet his son on Christmas Day. It seems cruel to this family but it shows that Americans take family abuse very seriously.4.Different Understanding of ResponsibilityOn the hearing, one nurse accuses that Xu doesn’t care about the life of his son, because Xu said “save the wife, not the child”. In America, people believe that every child has the right to come to this world. So that’s why abortion has been a contradictory subject in America for a long time. But in China, just like XU said in the movie, it is the common sense.-留得青山在，哪怕没柴烧。
