Each day we are confronted with many decisions both small and large. We weigh the various factors in front of us and try to make good decisions based upon the information we have at hand. Yet, sometimes, even with adequately reliable information, the decisions we make are still against good judgment. What circumstances can cause people to make bad decisions? Do smart people make wrong decisions as well? That’s what you are expected to explore and talk about in this unit. By the end of this unit, you are expected to write a narrative essay in respect to

大学英语精读第四册作文参考答案汇总

大学英语精读第四册作文参考答案汇总大学英语精读第三版(上海外语教育出版社董亚芬主编)第四册Book4Unit1~Unit10 作文参考答案Unit 1Kid 1:The pay is too low. We workers will get five dollars each. And both of you will collect hundreds. That isn't fair.Kid 2: Five dollars per hour. Otherwise, we'll quit.Boss 1: Geez, that's too much. What do you take us for?Boss 2: Millionaires, huh?Kid 2: Millionaire or no millionaire, we don't care. What we care about is you ought to pay us reasonably.Boss 1: You know, besides your wages, we have to pay for the gasoline and buy gifts for our neighbors who have helped us a lot as you must have seen. That'll be a lot of money.Kid 3: We don't intend to put you in an awkward position. But we do deserve more. Boss 1: How about, say, one dollar and a half per hour?Kid 3: Three dollars.Boss 2: (shakes his head) No. Kids (almost in chorus) Two dollars, no less. Bosses (nod to each other) Done!Unit 2The modern world gets most of its energy needs from coal, oil and natural gas. These sources have one thing in common: once they have been taken from the depths of the earth, they can never be replaced. Naturally, their reserves tend to be on the decrease. However, as economies develop, the world demand for energy is growing enormously day by day. It is quite obvious, therefore, that we are threatened with the approach of energy crisis. What, then, can we do to prevent energy crisis? The answer lies partly in practicing conservation of resources. Large amounts of energy are being wasted in all sections of the modern society so that the present major energy sources will be used up much sooner than expected. If we heighten our awareness of the urgent need to conserve energy, however, we will be able to make the sources last a lot longer. Of course, conservation is not the perfect solution to the energy problem. Eventually, sources like coal and oil will be exhausted. But there are many other energy sources that can be used in place of them, such as nuclear power, wind energy and solar energy. Scientists are now doing their best to develop new sources of energy, which is our hope for the future. We are convinced that so long as both solutions are applied, energy crisis can be prevented.Unit 3Why Should We Attach Importance to Both Theory and Practice? It is generally accepted that theory is based on practice. Galileo, for example, based his studies of natural laws on experimentation and observation. It was by observationthat he proved the theory that the sun is the center of the solar system. Likewise, Comrade Deng Xiaoping's theory concerning the building of socialism with distinctive Chinese features has been established on the basis of revolutionary practice in China today. Beyond doubt, there can be no scientific theory without practice. It is also certain that theory, in turn, serves practice. For instance, astronomers apply theories about the heavenly bodies to foretell eclipses and suchlike. Another case in point is, again, Comrade Deng Xiaoping's theory, which guides the Chinese people on their way to building a prosperous and powerful socialist society. Practice without theory as its guide is like a ship sailing into a port without a pilot. The consequences can be disastrous. In view of the above, we can safely conclude that it is highly important to combine theory with practice in our work. We must never ignore one in favor of the other.Unit 4How to Win the War against TerrorismFew can doubt the harm terrorism produces. News of death and suffering caused by terrorist attacks on innocent people going about their everyday lives is far too common. What can bring one human to behave with such cruelty towards another? Some terrorists may claim that the injustice their group has suffered is so great that any means are justified. They may argue that those stronger than them have used force against their people and that terror is the only weapon left to the weak. Yet such arguments only lead to the ruin of more innocent lives. Two wrongs do not make a right. What can be done to solve the problem? One tactic must be better protection through increased security, making attacks easier to uncover and prevent. Another is to attack the root cause of terrorism, the sources of injustice that fuel its support. Neither task is easy.Unit 5May 8, 1998Dear Sir,I am writing in response to your advertisement in today's Guangming Daily. I wish very much to be considered for the position referred to. I feel that I am competent to perform the duties outlined in your advertisement, for my education and experience are both in line with the requirements of the job you offer. I am twenty-five years of age, and a graduate of Fudan University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Since my graduation in 1996, I have held a job as a salesman in a trade company, where my performance is highly appreciated. Now I would like to move on to a position that requires more individual responsibility. Your advertisement indicates to me that the job opening in your company is exactly what I am looking for. It is the kind of challenge I'd like to meet. If you feel that I might be qualified for the post, I should welcome an interview any time at your convenience. Enclosed you will find my résumé and a recent photo of myself.Yours faithfully,Zhang HuapingUnit6How to Improve Your Reading ComprehensionAs our studying is mostly done through reading, it is self-evident that we should endeavour to improve our reading comprehension. The best way you can become a good reader is through practice. You cannot read a few paragraphs just once in a while and become a fluent reader. You need to read constantly. It is advisable to carry something to read with you wherever you go. Whenever you have the chance, take it out and read a paragraph or two. Once you have made reading a habit, your reading is bound to benefit. To improve your reading comprehension, you also need to develop certain reading skills. For example, a poor reader tends to move his eyes from word to word whereas an efficient reader will move his eyes from thought group to thought group. To pick up speed and fluency, therefore, you should learn to read in thought groups. Mastering such reading techniques is the key to effective reading.Unit 7Sam went to the cinema the other night, but he didn't enjoy it. Entering the cinema, Sam thought of taking off his coat. But the cinema turned out to be very cold and he had to keep his coat on. As there wasn't much space between the rows, his legs began to ache shortly after he took his seat. Worse still, he found it difficult to breathe easily. Looking about, he saw a lot of people were smoking. At last the film started. To his annoyance, the person in front was wearing such a big hat that he could hardly see the screen. To top it all, people all around him made a lot of noise, some telling jokes, others laughing loudly, not to mention a child crying out with pleasure. Needless to say, Sam missed most of the dialogue. He couldn't bear to sit out the rest of the film and went out of the cinema into the cold night in a fury.Unit 8Effects of Technological Advance on HumankindTechnology has brought immense benefits to humankind. Take a look around and you'll find examples too numerous to list. Electric appliances like microwave ovens have rendered our home life much easier and more enjoyable. Also, if you wish to travel to another city or country, the airplane will take you there within a matter of hours. What's more important, the use of advanced technology has made possible enormous increases in our food production capacity, enabling the world's fast-growing population to maintain at least an acceptable standard of living. On the other hand, however, technology has created problems that may threaten human existence. A major hazard is pollution. Indisputably, we have little chance to survive while the land, water and atmosphere are seriously polluted. Furthermore, technology can expose mankind to such threats as a nuclear war. Confronted with the two sets of consequences, we must keep a clear head. Personally, it is important to realize that without technological advance there can be no further progress for human civilization. At the same time, because of the associated hazards, the use of technology must be subjected to careful planning and firm social control.Unit 9As early as I was a high school student I decided to dedicate myself to medical science. This important decision in my life had a great deal to do with my uncle's sudden death. It was like this: One day when I came home from school I was shocked to hear my aunt crying with deep grief. Upon inquiry I learned that my uncle, who had been ill with hypertension for years, died of cerebral haemorrhage that very afternoon. While mourning my uncle's passing I recalled that hypertension was also the root cause of my grandfather's death and my father was afflicted with the same illness. Obviously it is mostly a hereditary disease, able to be passed on through the genes of a parent to a child. So there is a chance I may suffer from it too. As time went on, I uncovered more about hypertension. For one thing, at present it is impossible to effect a permanent cure of the disease. For another, it causes thousands upon thousands of deaths every year. It became clear to me that we got to find ways to make the incurable disease curable and save millions of lives. A likely victim of the disease, I made up my mind that one day I would join hands with the scientists in trying to solve this knotty medical problem.Unit10True Happiness and Hard WorkSome people think that health is essential to happiness. Others believe wealth makes them happy. Still others of a strong intellectual turn of mind look upon wisdom as the source of happiness. In a way, they all have a point. However, health, wealth and wisdom are not gifts dropped from the heaven, but rewards of your own efforts. For instance, you have to work very hard in order to earn your share of money. Indeed, it is work that helps make us healthy, wealthy and wise. True happiness, to my mind, comes first and last from hard work. We derive great satisfaction from our work also because work constitutes a contribution to the modernization effort. As masters of our country, we feel duty bound to do our bit for socialist construction and take pride in the fact that our joint efforts are bringing prosperity to our motherland. And then again, we are eager to become more knowledgeable about and efficient in our lines of work. Work, more than anything else, provides us with the much-desired opportunity to learn and improve ourselves.更多精彩请点击/?id=2465。

You've fine tuned your cover letter. You've completed the application. You've lined up your references. Finally, you've been invited to an interview for a job! Interviewing for jobs can be a daunting (yet exhilarating) prospect. Like anything, you will get better with practice. However, the more practice you have in job interviews usually means you're also racking up the rejections, and no one likes to experience too much rejection. Now that you've landed an interview, what's the best way to impress the hiring official, be invited back for a second interview, and get offered the job? You need to be prepared, and, surprisingly, it's incredibly important to know what not to say during an interview. One slip could mean the difference between a job offer and a rejection. With that in mind, here are the things you should never say during a job interview. How much does the job pay?As a general rule, wages and salaries are not usually discussed during a first interview. Asking about this makes you seem like you only care about money. Even if you are invited to a second or third interview, let the employer bring up the topic of money. Be prepared to tell them how much you're expecting. Give a range of what you'd accept rather than a specific amount. Estimating too high or too low might automatically knock you out of the running. It's important to do your research, though. How much do other employers pay? What's the going rate for the position? What does your company do?If you don't know what the company makes or does, why are you interviewing for them? Do your research. With the unbelievable amount of information available on the Internet and at the local library, there's absolutely no excuse for ignorance. You should walk into the interview knowing a lot about the company.I didn't get along with my old boss because . . .Criticizing a previous employer implies that you may do the same to them when you leave. Instead, explain how you overcame a difference of opinion and how you managed difficult situations. Don't dwell on negative issues, and make your answer short.I don't have any questions for you.Of course you do. Saying you don't have any questions indicates you aren't very interested in the job or don't know much about the company. Do your research and walk into the interview with questions. Try to think of questions that the interviewer won't answer as part of the introduction. For example, ask about expansion plans or future development within the company.I've been going through a rough patch at home . . .Interviewers will probably ask you to share something about yourself. Remember to keep your response pertinent to the job and position. Talk about your education, previous employment, goals, and ambitions. If you mention hobbies or personal interests, keep it short. Do not discuss personal problems. In five years, I want to live on a tropical island. When asked about your future, employers want to know how your goals will benefit their company. Saying anything else will tell them that you aren't ambitious or interested in the job at hand. What do you want to achieve in this job or in this industry?41. Unfortunately, we often focus on the popular dramatizations of the story to the exclusion of the message that lies at its heart. The story is now a staple of the Western Christmas tradition, but many people don't fully understand why. A Christmas Carol is a very simple and straightforward presentation of the dangers associated with power and greed. However, the story has a more fundamental (if somewhat clichéd by today's standards) message: seize the day and take advantage of all that life has to offer. The reader is left with the notion that, within all of us, there exist qualities that can be improved to unknowable benefit, and it is our responsibility to make necessary improvements in order to realize those benefits. We see, in Ebenezer Scrooge, an individual almost entirely consumed by greed with little or no worries for the rest of humanity. He is, obviously, an extreme case with whom it is difficult to identify. His days are spent in concentration over his money and how best to underuse it, and his life has been wasted on this cause. He squanders his days while those around him, such as his nephew and Bob Cratchit, attempt to live their lives and make them worthwhile. When Marley visits Scrooge in his bedroom, he explains what will soon happen and why and says, "It is required of every man, that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellowmen, and travel far and wide." Marley never did this and is condemned to walk forever in chains after death. Scrooge, also, has never done this, and his visits with the three ghosts are meant to awaken that inside of him which has been dead all his life. Scrooge's journeys with the three ghosts are also meant to make the reader reexamine his or her own life.Scrooge, as well as the reader, also learns that in a self-absorbed existence based on the exclusion of others, we succumb to ignorance. Ignorance of others and the world around us breeds contempt for that which we do not understand and creates an inescapable trap into which we inevitably fall. Scrooge did not understand this and ultimately fell victim to his own vices. We, as both readers and human beings, are todraw from Scrooge's experiences his final lessons from the ghosts and not become victim to the sametraps which befell him.41. Though uniforms have long been a staple of private schools, they are still a rarity in public schools. This is not merely a debate over the aesthetics of fashion. Rather, this debate lies at the very heart of the politics of fashion. What students choose to wear (and what their parents allow them to wear) to school consistently rouses strong feelings and animated discussion. Much has already been said in defense of and against school uniforms, and I won't belabor the individual points further. There are many valid points on both sides of the argument. Instead, I intend to explain why I personally stand in opposition to school uniforms and highlight the reasons why uniforms would serve very little purpose in our specific school district. For the most part, students in our district are well behaved and don't approach any semblance of extreme behavior or expression. Administrators seem to be more worried about a potential escalation of student expression that so far has shown no indication of materializing. Principals and other district administrators are chasing shadows—they're looking to solve a problem that doesn't exist. Our district has no history of student activism, and there are only a few examples of flagrant violations of the existing dresscode. In short, there is absolutely no precedent to believe that students will choose to begin acting out against authority through fashion statements.School uniforms seem to be an inappropriate response to a nonexistent problem. It is an unnecessary exertion of power by administrators who don't know how to properly exercise authority. Let's take a moment to consider a hypothetical school district that is overwhelmed by student discipline problems. Would the institution of school uniforms be an appropriate response in that case? I would argue in the negative. Uniforms, by themselves, would in no way prevent students from expressing themselves or their views. Improper and unpopular behavior will not be stifled by a school uniform. It may actually make the situation worse, as resentment over the mandatory clothing would likely be great.School uniforms obviously interfere with students' right to self-expression—a right that should be protected in the public school system. In addition, mandating that all students wear identical (and unattractive) outfits enforces the message that conformity is the preferred method to prevent or resolve conflict. This is certainly not an appropriate message for our schools to be sending to children.41. There have always been and will always be people who lie, cheat, or steal to get what they want. Dishonesty has many faces. Some of them are obvious, and some are more clandestine. Producing counterfeit products—products that are not the genuine article—is one of the more widespread forms of dishonesty. The practice affects almost every industry in every country of the world.Official currency is not immune to this problem. Indeed, counterfeit banknotes have been a problem for nearly as long as people have used money. Many governments (who print and regulate national currencies) have fought back by creating banknotes that are incredibly difficult to copy. High-tech security features are embedded within the money to identify the note as legal and genuine. Modern banknotes are not merely slips of paper; they are essentially sophisticated pieces of technology! In most countries of the world, the printing and issue of banknotes is handled exclusively by the government or a government-owned bank. In the United Kingdom, however, there are seven retail banks, in addition to the central Bank of England, that are authorized to print their own banknotes. These seven banks are located in, and print currency unique to, Scotland and Northern Ireland.Founded in 1694, the Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom, and it primarily serves England and Wales. For nearly 300 years, the Bank of England has been issuing banknotes, and for nearly 300 years, counterfeit notes have been a problem. In response to this ongoing threat, the following security features have been developed.∙Banknotes are printed on special paper that is highly durable and has a unique feel.∙Raised lettering is used throughout the notes, particularly on the words Bank of England.∙ A metallic thread weaves through every note. It looks like a broken line across the note, but if you hold it up to the light, it appears as a continuous dark line.∙There is a watermark of the Queen that is visible when held up to the light.∙Every note has a 3D hologram design that alternates between the value of the note and an image of Britannia.∙If the note is placed under an ultra-violet light, the number (5, 10, 20, or 50. will appear as bright red and green.∙Microlettering beneath the Queen's portrait is only visible with a magnifying glass. The Bank of England prints notes in denominations of £5, £10, £20, and £50. The above security features are common to all four values. £20 and £50 banknotes have additional features that make them even more difficult to counterfeit.。

新世纪大学英语综合教程4第四册Unit1---Man and Nature

Part 4: (para. 8-9)
The solution to man–nature lies in rational and wise organization of both production itself and care for Mother Nature by all humanity. And the failure to live in harmony with nature and obey its laws would cause fatal disaster.
Part 2: (Para. 3-4)
As society develops, man tends to become less dependent on nature directly, while indirectly his dependence grows because the industrial transformation of the earth makes it increasingly difficult to obtain irreplaceable natural resources for the needs of production.
True or False
Read the second part of the text and make your judgement about whether the following sentences are true or false according to paras. 3-4.

Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general.
However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet inCopenhagenin December to negotiate a new international climate treaty.

Roger Pielke Jr., a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention.” But the report, he said, “will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed (有瑕疵的).”
The report, to be released Friday, analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良) and heat-related health problems.
But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.
Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.
In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report.
