APicking a destination may be the hardest part of getting ready to study abroad. It’s hard to pick just one to be your home. We are here to help you narrow it down, with a complete guide to the top four studying abroad destinations.Number 4: AustraliaAustralia is a country where strong programs seem a bit obvious based on the location itself. Anything dealing with the environment is a natural choice of study, because Australia has such a unique climate across the country. You’ll need a student visa to study in Australia. Most universities will send you an official form along with more information about the visa process once you’ve met these requirements. Number 3: ChinaSome fields like business or economics stand out just because of the nature of the country itself as an economic superpower. Other areas like cultural studies might give you more options to pursue programs that would help you get a better feel of what life is like in less developed areas. You’ll need a visa for any program you decide to do in China. You’ll also need to make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned departure date. Be sure to pay attention to different entry and exit requirements too if you plan to do any side traveling to places like Hong Kong.Number 2: FranceAside from studying the French language, France is a great place for students, who are interested in art, literature, music, history, architecture, or a combination of any of the above. If you’re planning to be in France for more than 90 days, you’ll need a visa. This process can take a long time (think two months or more), so be sure to start early.Number 1: The United KingdomThe UK is home to some of the oldest, most respected universities on the planet. You’re almost guaranteed to find an incredible program for any subject you could possibly think of. You’ll need one of two types of visas depending on how long you plan to study there and what you’ll be doing.1. According to Number 4, we can know that __________.A. the weather in Australia is almost the same all year roundB. the location of Australia influences its programs greatlyC. most universities in Australia can provide visas for foreign studentsD. the development of science in Australia is the rapidest in the world2. If a foreigner is about to study in China, he should __________.A. bring a student visa with himB. volunteer to work in less developed areasC. ensure that his passport can be valid at least for the following six monthsD. apply for a different visa to travel in Hong Kong3. Who may be mostly interested in the article?A. Students who plan to study abroad.B. Teachers who plan to teach in universities.C. Travelers who plan to visit other countries.D. Students who plan to work outside.BSuperman Returns, X-Men, The Fantastic Four and Iron Man have been on the list of superhero movies since the dawn of the 21st century. The success of them has gone beyond all expectations, with six of the top 12 highest box office grosses (票房收入) being held by superhero movies. There are many theories as to why these films have become and remained so popular over the last decade. Some experts consider most movies to be forms of escapism (逃避现实). They are traditionally meant to be a combination of education and entertainment, and superhero films tend heavily toward the latter element. Watching a superhero movie is a great chance to relax and not think about stress or difficult things in your life.Historically, during times of war, films have become a hotbed of patriotism (爱国主义). Superheroes are charged with bringing peace, fighting violently if necessary, and trying to maintain a normal life. Some audience members may relate to that concept, either on a personal level or in relation to their ideas about war and any current world situations. Moreover, most superheroes serve as a hope-inspiring figure, an image of someone who can save us all from dark and difficult times. Superhero movies promote the ideas of peace, safety and freedom.Aside from the global and psychological reasons, superhero movies are just a lot of fun. Since the success of Spiderman, the Hollywood film industry has begun throwing huge amounts of money at the films, to great effect. Most of the big-earning superhero films of the 21st century are written, acted, and technically produced by the best minds in the film business. In 2008, The Dark Knight was released, making backnearly its entire production budget of $185 million dollars in the first weekend.Superhero movies are many things to many people. To comic book lovers, they are the realization of their favorite worlds. To those feeling the strain of economic, personal, or national problems, they are a welcome escape for a few hours. Grab your popcorn and your chocolate and look for a good seat in the middle of the row, because it looks like superhero films will continue to have a wild ride.4. The author lists some superhero movies in Paragraph 1 in order to show that ________.A. superhero movies are shot in the 21st centuryB. superhero movies express the idea of escapismC. superhero movies make more profit than other moviesD. superhero movies get popular over the last decade5. People like superhero movies during times of war because __________.A. people can be saved from dark and difficult timesB. people can gain positive energy from superhero moviesC. people can learn how to fight against other countriesD. people can know more about the current world situations6. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A. Watching superhero films is a way of entertainment.B. Comic book lovers don’t dare to face the reality.C. Superhero films are a new form of education.D. People who love their country watch superhero films most.7. What’s the best title for the passage?A. How much profit do superhero movies bring?B. What makes superhero movies successful?C. Why are superhero movies so popular?D. Which superhero movies are the most famous?CI spent my first four weeks in Granada at the Centre for Modern Languages. This institution is part of the UGR, but has many students enrolling for a month or two at a time to learn Spanish. One of my most useful activities there was my weekly language exchange with Lucia, a Ph.D. student from Cordoba. She and I walked around the city for an hour or so, and I spoke in Spanish while she practiced her English. These language exchanges were not only fun, but also helped develop Spanish skills. While in Spain, I took two kinds of trips, and I would recommend each for different reasons. At the endof February, I participated in a group activity called Morocco Exchange. The four days we spent travelling around Morocco was the best time in my life. We started from Tangier, spent a few hours in Asilah and a day in Rabat, with a final stop in Chefchaouen. We did a few touristy things, such as visiting some magnificent Roman ruins in Chellah. But we also had the opportunity to communicate with real Moroccan students, who answered our questions frankly and with good humor.About a month later, I had the other kind of trip. Spain celebrated Semana Santa (the week before Easter) with a week-long vacation, and I planned a trip to Valencia, alone. It was challenging and a little lonely at times, but a really fantastic experience. I liked the freedom to do what I wanted, and I also had the opportunity to meet some incredible people at the hotel. It can be extremely satisfying to do things by yourself, like exploring an entire city by bicycle. But one must take care, especially as a female, and be a little more vigilant (警惕的) when travelling alone.8. We infer the writer went to the Centre for Modern Languages to _________.A. work part-timeB. do sight-seeingC. work as a teacherD. improve her Spanish9. How did the writer probably find her time with Lucia?A. Boring.B. Beneficial.C. Relaxing.D. Uncomfortable.10. What do the two kinds of trips mentioned in the passage refer to?A. Group travelling and travelling alone.B. Group travelling and travelling in the country.C. Travelling with classmates and travelling alone.D. Travelling in a hurry and travelling in a relaxing way.11. We infer when the writer was travelling in Valencia, ____________.A. she felt completely safeB. she didn’t quite enjoy herselfC. she found the trip was very easyD. she could take charge of her plansDEnough may never be enough. As human beings, it seems that once we attain what we think will make us whole, we grow bored quickly and need something new in order to feel satisfied. We are addicted to what we don’t have. You’d better sit down at this very moment and make a list of all the reasons why you’re fortunate and while you’re writing the list, you would want nothing more. You could get together with a group of peoplewhom you care about and discuss ideas. You would feel comfortable with what you have and who you are at that moment or some hours later. The talking heads always tell you that you need to be rich and famous on your television, so your desire for more becomes unquenchable (难抑制的). You forget that you are enough. You find yourself making comparisons between your life and the life of people you assume who have figured it out, and all of your accomplishments are never enough to satisfy you.The issue with this “never enough” mentality is that we all have it to some degree. We fail to realize that even the people who have figured it out are on some level still as lost and broken as everyone else. Everyone is constantly looking for validation (确认) in the form of likes and comments to give meaning to our sense of self. We honestly believe that as long as we buy into the illusion (错觉) when we are happy, everything is going to be great, we won’t have to face reality.Reality is that we want all the material, social media fame, and worthless validation in order to feel accepted by others. The reason why all of those things bring only temporary satisfaction is that they aren’t the answer. We all keep looking for other people to accept us in order to feel whole. But in fact, it is when we accept ourselves that we can feel really satisfied. We are in a universal competition for acceptance that no one wants a part of, but so few have the courage to stop competing. What will ever be enough?12. After writing down the reasons why you’re fortunate, you may think ___________.A. you are lucky enoughB. you need something newC. you will grow bored quicklyD. you should discuss ideas with others13. According to Paragraph 2, the people who have “figured it out” refer to those _______.A. who don’t dare to face the realityB. who intend to compare with othersC. who have achieved some kind of successD. who are unlikely to be accepted by others14. People can only get long term satisfaction if __________.A. they can achieve great successB. they believe in their own abilitiesC. they can accept themselves joyfullyD. they stop commenting on others’ behavior15. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To warn people not to set long-term goals.B. To ask people to appreciate what they have.C. To teach people how to hold a positive attitude.D. To inform people of the importance of comparison.

APut your car keys away and forget about your travel pass --- it’s time to do a bit of walking.National Walking Month is organized every May by Living Streets, an organization that campaigns for the rights and the needs of pedestrians, so the organization is previously known as the Pedestrians’ Association. The association’s aim is to make streets safe, attractive and enjoyable spaces for people to live, work, shop and play. By putting people (rather than vehicles) first, Living Streets wants to create streets and spaces where people feel happier, healthier and more sociable. The annual campaign gives participants a great opportunity to experience the many virtues of walking. These include the physical health benefits of becoming fitter; the environmental advantages of not using vehicles; the delight of local discoveries --- seeing more of your local areas on foot; the enjoyment of walking with other people, whether family, friends or work colleagues and finally the stress relief that comes from walking --- walking can clear your head.Walk to School Week, 18 to 22 May, is part of the month’s activities and its aim is to encourage parents to send children to school on foot, rather than take them in the car or let them use public transport. The movement was started in 1995 with only five participating schools and now two decades later, more than one million children take part.Similarly, there is Walk to Work Week, 11 to 15 May, where grown-ups are encouraged to walk. In the morning, getting off the bus a stop early or parking a few streets away is a good way to add more steps to the daily total. And during the working day, after having lunch at the desks or in the canteen, take a walk and get some fresh air. Walk home with your workmates and chat away about everything under the sun but work!1.What’s the purpose of Living Streets?A. To let people keep away from vehicles.B. To build safer walkways for pedestrians.C. To help people enjoy walking in the street and enjoy life.D. To make people aware of environmental pollution.2.Paragraph 3 is intended to show that walking is __________.A. so interestingB. very relaxingC. perfectly safeD. highly beneficial3.What can we learn from Walk to School Week?A. It is organized by the government.B. It is held before Walk to Work Week.C. It has developed rapidly over the last 20 years.D. It encourages students to walk to school alone.4.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?A. An introduction to Walk to Work Week.B. A nationwide health movement.C. The influence of working day.D. National Walking Month’s history.BWhy should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history. Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history. The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past. I am convinced that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes "the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to learn from history." Perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this. The second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We can not evenunderstand why we are and where we are without history, much less (更不必说) try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.I teach my children history, for one more reason. I purchased a set of historical audio (录音机) tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over. It was my hope that he would become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself. I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr. if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he accomplished. I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.5 . Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps ( 处于沮丧中), as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart. How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store?I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy (礼貌) to speak to others that are around you.I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.9. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that ____________.A. it makes people more confidentB. it can pick up people' s spiritsC. it can help rid the cruelty in the worldD. it can help people get on well with others10. What is the author' s attitude towards the present world?A. Positive.B. Critical.C. Satisfied.D. Indifferent.DAmazon. com has received a patent(专利) right to send its products to customers by drone planes. The company is the largest US-based online seller of products by mail and other services. Now, the company has received a patent for its planned drone delivery system. In March, federal officials allowed Amazon to test its drone delivery plan. But even with a patent and the ability of drones to make deliveries, it does not appear the company will put its new delivery system in place any time soon. The US Patent Office published the document, which describes Amazon’s plans to use GPS to deliver products to homes and to wherever people are. The drone will use a customer’s mobile device --- usually a smartphone ---to avoid hitting people or buildings and to find a secure area to land. The company wants to deliver products within 30 minutes after people order them on its website. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is worried about the safety. Although it allowed Amazon to test the system, the agency said the operators must be able to see the planes. That greatly limits the delivery area.Loretta Alkalay is a professor at the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in New York. Although Amazon is not yet offering drone delivery, Professor Alkalay says it will not be long before it does. She says there are worries that the drones will hit buildings or people, or that the products and drones will be stolen or damaged by people on purpose. But she says that is because many people believe the drones would only deliver the products to the front door of a house. “However, it is possible that homes will one day have special area on their roofs designed to receive product deliveries,” she adds.13.What is special about the new delivery system?A. It can deliver heavy products by plane.B. It uses planes without human operators.C. It can delivery many products at a time.D. It is much safer than other delivery ways.14. (共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)AParents, our first teachers, play a highly significant role in our lives. However, doesn’t it seem that many of us become to have conflicts with them when we start high school? We're less likely to listen to them and take their suggestions——we even rebel against them. Why? It may be the so-called “generation gap”. A generation gap appears when we begin to feel our parents are ignoring us, don’t understand us, and we feel we can no longer share our feelings with them. The key reason is our desire for independence. In senior high school, we start to want to take responsibility for our own lives and make our own decisions. But parents resist this. They still want to control us and try to force us to do things they think we should do. Debate and discussion often come to nothing. Gradually, we talk with them less, and keep our feelings locked up inside.Zhang Xiaoyun, 16, of Ningbo, Zhejiang, has talked less and less with her mother since she started senior high school. “She believes studies should be my priority, not my inner world,” Zhang said. “Each day, she asks me the same old questions like, ‘How was your last exam?’ or ‘Have you made any progress in physics?’” To Zhang, these questions are annoying and so she always tries to ignore them and answers perfunctorily. “Sometimes, when I get upset, I quarrel with her. After, she comes to apologize and comfort me. But I know, she doesn’t completely understand me,” Zhang said. Now, a home that was once full of laughter has fallen into gloom and silence. The generation gap can be harmful. Because of the lack of communication, our parentsno longer know what we are thinking about. There are quarrels, even over trivial things. When that happens, we may not be able to concentrate on our studies. Some of us even become afraid to go home after school——a very serious situation for the whole family.1. Which of the following is not included in the passage?A. The causes of generation gap.B. The effects of generation gap.C. One example of generation gap.D. Ways of narrowing generation gap.2. Which of the following is one reason for the generation gap according to the passage?A. Modern society changing very fast.B. Parents having unrealistic hopes of their children.C. Parents and kids not understanding and respecting each other.D. Young people liking to escape from the control of their parents.3. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to the underlined word“perfunctorily”?A. attentivelyB. indifferently(冷淡地)C. flatteringly(奉承地)D. seriously4. In the view of the author, ________.A. parents should allow their children more freedomB. parents and children should not stay togetherC. the younger generation should value the older generationD. academic records are more important than one’s inner worldBDo you still get free plastic bags from the supermarkets? Things have changed.China has banned free plastic bags at shops and supermarkets, and people have to pay for using bags. The rule started on June. It came because our country tried to make litter less. Making super-thin plastic bags has also been banned. The Chinese once used about 3,000,000,000 plastic shopping bags a day, and they have1caused pollution of the environment. The bags have become a main cause of plastic pollution because they are easy to break and people throw them away here and there. So the Chinese people are encouraged to bring their own bags for shopping. What kind of shopping bag is the best to bring? Some students in Anhui have a good idea. They make their own shopping bags. They use old clothes to make cloth bags, and send them to their parents as presents. They also ask their parents and friends to use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. They think it is their duty to protect the environment.5. Researchers in psychology think that there are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors. The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually want to be active. People think that red, for example, is exciting. Sociable people, those who like to be with others, like red. The cool colors are green, blue and violet. These colors, unlike warm colors, are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.Red may be exciting, but one researcher says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colors than in a room with cool colors. He suggests that a warm color, such as red or orange in a good color for a living room or restaurant. People who are relaxing or eating do not want time to pass quickly. Cool colors are better for officers or factories if the people who are working there want time to pass quickly.Researchers do not know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool. A“The concept of fate” comes up a lot in conversation with Julia Roberts.” I don't want to toy with the gods, ” she'll say. This is understandable since by any accounting she has been phenomenally lucky: a career that has lasted more than 25 years and includes a best-actress Oscar and a marriage that has sailed past the decade mark. But these days, she's trying to live a life more ordinary, admittedly a difficult proposition for someone who found super-stardom at 22 with 1990's Pretty Woman and to date has brought in $2.6 billion in box office receipts. She loves the family she created with cinematographer husband Danny Moder, whom she married in 2002. She seems content right where she is dressed in a sweater and jeans, newly blond hair pulled back, her delicately lined face free of makeup, with her children , 9-year-old twins Hazel and Finn and 6-year-old Henry, climbing into her lap to collect hugs. Almost all of her acting work is shot around their schedule, even her most recent: an adaptation of The Normal Heart, a play about the early fight against AIDS, airing on HBO this month.“Her family is a major part of what she does,” adds Bradley Cooper, her co-star in 2010's Valentine's Day , during which, he recalls, a dressing room was turned into a playroom for the 1½-year-old twins. “Her children are always around.”Recently sorrow caught up to Roberts when her half-sister Nancy Motes died at 37 from a possible drug overdose in early February. “You don't want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world. But as with any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family.”1. What is probably the best title of the passage?A. Biography of Julia Roberts.B. How to Deal with Your Family.C. Julia Roberts’ Lovely Children.D. Julia Roberts and Her Family Life.2. How many children does Julia Roberts have?A. OneB. TwoC. ThreeD. Four3. The New York Times constructed the building as its general office building in 1904, and staged a massive New Year's Eve firework display to celebrate. But when the city outlawed the fireworks, The Times' chief electrician, Walter Palmer, came up with the idea to drop a lighted ball from the top of the tower instead. The New York Times owned the building for less than 10 years, and it fell into disrepair as Midtown grew ragged. According to a 1961 "Talk of the Town" piece, "There was a time when alcohol-illegal-selling was going full popularity in one of the basements...when the F.B.I. –this was during the Second World War –was holding automatic gun practice in a basement and using a 7th floor office to trap German spies."In 1995, Lehman Brothers bought the building, but instead of renting office space, it turned the 25-story tower into a billboard and made a 300 percent profit in two years.Filings from 2012 show that the billboards covering the building generate over $23 million annually, which represents 85 percent of the building's total revenue. The building itself has an estimated value between $378 million and $495 million.Walgreens rents the first three floors, with some storage space above that. The upper floors are used for New Year's Eve. But in between, there's not much else.5. Why did the New York Times build the building?A. To take it as its general office buildingB. To present the New Year’s Eve fireplay.C. To throw a lighted ball from above.D. To make advertising by billboard.6. For what was the building used during World War II?A. For public use.B. The building's entire income.D. All the building's expenses.CToday’s youngsters use smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices(设备) more than ever before. And the amount of time they spend on these devices is only likely to increase in the future. But are all these changes good?We sometimes call children who are able to use mobile devices and technology easily digital natives. They can text, email, get Wi-Fi, and download. Some experts say that long periods of time spent chatting to friends online, playing video games and listening to mp3s, for example, may possibly change how their brains work. Then there is the question of privacy. All this online activity creates a digital footprint. Every time we share a photo or a post on social media, and every time we search for something on the Internet, information about our activity is stored somewhere. Our inability to control what happens to our children's digital footprint - and their personal privacy - has big possibilities. It might become normal for companies to ask their employees for their social media qualifications. We are also becoming more aware that companies and governments may be able to 'listen in' on our communications. So it is important to make our children aware of the possible results of oversharing.Another area where the digital world may have a big effect is in education. One worry is that kids who spend a lot of time online at home are sometimes unable to socialise properly with other children when they are at school. Other experts point out that, when it comes to children and technology, the children are the experts, not the teachers. They say that we should stop seeing online as 'bad' and offline as 'good' - and there is evidence of innovative (革新的)work in some schools. So, do we really need to rescue our children from the dangers of the digital world?9. According to the second paragraph, what is the possible effect of digital childhood?A. Children can grow up quickly.B. Children can read texts fluently.C. Children’s way of thinking may be changed.D. Children may become mentally disabled.10. All the following may happen to our digital footprints EXCEPT________A. When surfing the Internet, our digital footprints are saved.B. Some business societies may take advantage of the information.C. Government may look into our communication through the Internet.D. Digital pictures may be printed by our computer automatically.11. Why are many teachers doubtful about digital technology?A. Because some students can not do well in studies.B. Because some teachers haven’t changed for years.C. Because some students addicted to digital technology can not socialize well.D. Because some teachers addicted to tradition technology cannot teach well.12. Which of the following can sumarize the main idea of the text?A. Do we need to rescue our kids from the digital world?B. Should children learn to use digital technology?C.
