I believe that we Chinese have a comparative advantage in some sports like table tennis, badminton, diving, gymnastics, weightlifting and so forth. And I’d like to cite diving as an example to show my opinions and list some reasons why China is usually good at those sports.
Firstly, just like diving, a sport which mainly focuses on skills, techniques and speed rather than fierce body antagonism, it seems that we really did well in those kinds of sports in Olympics games, such as table tennis, gym and some sports I have mentioned before. In addition, compared to those western athletes who are tall and mighty, our inherent makeup, or so-called unique body structure which is relatively small, flexible and soft, may be preordain the huge difference. Thus, unlike those popular sports among westerners which require excellent physical qualities, such as basketball or athletics, we prefer sports like diving.
Secondly, most our athletes are hardworking and diligent, as an old Chinese proverb saying, “one minute on the stage takes ten-year practice”, they prepare a lot for the game. Apart from their own tough training, their coaches also play a significant role in the preparation. The coaches themselves are actually outstanding pioneer in the sports. They accumulated a lot of
experience as young athletes and gradually formed a complete and effective training system after retirement. Thus, the coaches really contribute a lot to our athletes, and because of standing on the shoulders of giants, they have better development of their own talents and qualities.
Thirdly, our national system of developing certain sports and selecting athletes is substantially different from that in those foreign countries. Let’s just make a simple comparison. The majority of sports activities in foreign countries are market-oriented which means that the government won’t guide the development of certain specific sports. The bigger market the sports occupied, the more people will take part in. The more people get involved, the greater their athletes can be selected. While our sports activities are government-oriented, so the government can dominate the system and make big decisions. Because of this, we choose sports like diving which has a relative low level of market orientation and it seems that we can get medals easily on such sports which is not popular in foreign countries. Then our government invests lots of money to develop that sports and we can select our athletes from a large number of talent reserves.。
