Passage 2It was unfortunate that, after so trouble-free an arrival, he should stumble(磕绊) in the dark as he was rising and severely twist his ankle on a piece of rock. After the first shock the pain became bearable, and he gathered up his parachute(降落伞) before limping into the trees to hide it as best as he could. The hard ground and the deep darkness made it almost impossible to do this efficiently. The pine needles lay several inches deep, so he simply piled them on top of the parachute, cutting the short twigs that he could feel around his legs, and spreading them on top of the needles. He was not sure if it would stay buried, but he could do nothing else about it.After limping for some distance from his parachute he began to make his way downhill through the trees. He had to find out where he was, and then decide what to do next. But walking downhill on a rapidly swelling ankle soon proved to be almost beyond his power. He dragged his legs with increasing difficulty, walking in long side-way movements across the slope, which meant taking more steps but less painful ones. By the time he cleared the trees and reached the valley, day was breaking. Mist hung in soft sheets across the fields. Small cottages and farm houses grouped around a village church, the spire(尖顶) on its top pointing high into the cold winter air to greet the morning.“I can’t go much further,” John Harding thought. “Someone is bound to find me. What can I do? I must get a rest before I go on. They’ll look for me high up there in the mountains where the plane crashed. I bet they’re out looking for it already. They’re sure to find the chute in the end. So they’ll know I wasn’t killed and must be somewhere. They’ll think I’m hiding up there in the trees and rocks and look for me there. I’ll go down to the village. If I’m lucky my foot will be good enough by the evening and I can manage to get to the border.”He could hear the faint echoes of voices far above him on the mountainside, startling him after great silence. Looking up, he saw lights like pinpoints moving across the face of the mountain in the gray light. The road was deserted, and he struggled along, still almost invisible in the first light, easing his aching foot wherever he could, avoiding stones and rough places, and limping quietly and painfully towards the village. He reached the church at last. A great need for peace almost drew him inside, but he knew that would not do , Instead, he limped along its walls towards a very old building a short distance from the church. It seemed to have stood there forever, as if it had grown out of the hillside. It had the same air of timelessness as the church. John Harding pushed open the heavy wooden door and slipped inside.56. In spite of his bad ankle Harding was able toA. walk in a direction that was less steep.B. bear the pain without changing direction.C. bury his parachute perfectly in a safe place.D. check the surroundings and locate where he was.57. Why was his attention drawn to the mountain again?A. He was surprised to notice some torches moving around.B. He was astonished to hear some voices far away.C. He could see the searcher’s faces in spite of the poor light.D. He could feel a shower of small rocks falling from above.58. Which of the following do you think John Harding was?A. An escaped prisoner trying to hide away.B. A criminal on the run from the police.C. An airman landing in an enemy country area.D. A spy in search of an important person.59. Harding’s plan wasA. to cross the border as soon as possible.B. to rest in the church as long as he could.C. to have his injured foot treated.D. to stay in the village for the day.60. We can tell from the story thatA. Harding had a cool head in emergency.B. Harding was strongly against war.C. the plane crash took place at dawn.D. it was unwise to bury the chute。

北京市学位英语专题成人自考2004年4月 试题及答案

2004年4月北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试试题(A)Part 1 Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:A youngster's social development has a profound effect on his academic progress. Kids who have trouble getting along with their classmates can end up behind academically as well and have a higher chance of dropping out(退学). In the early grades especially, experts say, youngsters should be encouraged to work in groups rather than individually so that teachers can spot children who may be having problems making friends. "When children work on a project", says Lillian Kate, an educational professor at the University &Illinois, "they learn to work together, to disagree, to think, to take turns and lighten tensions These skills can't be learned through lecture. We all know people who have wonderful technical skills but don't have any social skills. Relationships should be the first R".At a certain age, children are also learning to judge themselves in relation to others. For most children, school marks the first time that their goals are not set by an internal clock but by the outside world. Just as the 1-year-old struggles to walk, the 6-year-old is struggling to meet adult expectations. "Young kids don't know how to distinguish between effort and ability”, says Tynette Hills, professor of early-childhood education for the state of New Jersey, "(76) if they try hard to do something and fail, they may conclude that they will never be able to accomplish a particular task". "The effects of obvious methods of comparison such as posting grades can be serious", says Hills, "a child who has had his confidence really damaged needs a rescue operation".1. The author seems to think that a kid’s poor relationship with his classmates would .A. have negative effects on his studyB. develop his individualism but limit his intelligenceC. eventually lead to his leaving schoolD. have nothing to do with his achievements in a course2. In the first paragraph, the word “spot” means___.A. teachB. helpC. findD. treat3. For most children, school makes them understand ___.A. that it is society rather than individual that decides one’s futureB. that they can meet the social needsC. that one’s effort and one’s ability can be two quite different mattersD. that social needs and individual needs have nothing in common4. Which of the following is most unlikely for the author to do?A. To talk to the students who have mental problems.B. To help students develop a feeling of self-respect.C. To keep a student from playing alone.D. To announce a student’s scores in public.5. Which of the following is the major concern of the passage about a student’s needs?A. Individualism and cooperation.B. Academic success and independent thinking.C. Socialization and feeling of competence.D. Intelligence and respect.Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:If the Europeans thought a drought--a long period of dry weather-was something that happened only in Africa, they know better now. After four years of below-normal rainfall (in some cases only 10 percent of the annual average), vast areas of France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Britain and Ireland are dry and barren(贫瘠).(77) Water is so low in the canals of northern France that waterway traffic is forbidden except on weekends. Oyster(牡蛎)grows in Brittany report a 30 percent drop in production because of the loss of fresh water in local rivers necessary for oyster breeding. In southeastern England, the rolling green hills of Kent have turned so brown that officials have been weighing plans to pipe in water from Wales. In Portugal, farmers in the southern Alentejo region have held prayer meeting for rain--so far, in vain.(78) Governments in drought-spread countries are taking severe measures. Authorities in hard-hit areas of France have banned washing cars and watering lawns. In Britain, water will soon be metered, like gas and electricity. “The English have always taken water for granted,” says Graham Warren, a spokesman of Britain’s National Rivers Authority. “Now they’re putting a price on it.” Even a sudden end to the drought would not end the misery in some areas. It will take several years of unusually heavy winter rain, the experts say, just to bring existing water reserves up to their normal levels.6. What does the author mean by saying “they know better now?”A. They know more about the causes of the drought.B. They have a better understanding of the drought in Africa.C. They have realized that the drought in Europe is the most serious one.D. They have realized that droughts hit not only Africa but also Europe.7. The drought in Europe has brought about all the following problems except ___.A. below-normal rainfallB. difficult navigationC. a sharp drop in oyster harvestD. bone-dry hills8. The British government intends to ___.A. forbid the car-washing serviceB. increase the price of the water usedC. end the misery caused by the droughtD. charge fees for the use of the water9. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Germany is the only country free from the droughtB. Water reserves are at their lowest level in years due to droughtC. The drought is more serious in Britain than in FranceD. Europe will not have heavy rain until several years later.10. Which of the following is the most appropriate title for the passage?A. Europe In MiseryB. Drought Attacks EuropeC. Be Economical With WaterD. Europe, A Would-be AfricaPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:How can we get rid of garbage(垃圾)? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the time it can save the land to hold garbage. For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped(倾倒)it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil(化石)fuels. As we use up our fossil-fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.(79) Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the cities garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil.(80) Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.11. What two problems can man solve by burning garbage?A. The shortage of energy and air pollution.B. The shortage of energy and the land to hold garbage.C. Air pollution and the shortage of fossil fuel.D. Air pollution and the shortage of land to hold garbage.12. Which of the following is NOT the result of burning garbage?A. The garbage burned is turned into fossil fuels.B. The heat produced is used to boil water.C. The steam produced is used to make electricityD. The steam produced is used to heat buildings.13. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. About 2 million metric tons of garbage is burned in France each year.B. In a modern society, more and more garbage is produced each year.C. Using garbage is a good way to solve the problem of energy shortage.D. It will be too expensive to use garbage as an energy source.14. What is the author’s attitude?A. DelightedB. SadC. AgreeingD. Disagreeing15. The best title for the passage may be ___.A. 南京师范大学04年4月英语二资料7-自考串讲笔记

南京师范大学04年4月英语二资料71What is color? Why do some objects look red, others green, others blue?Color is caused by reflected light rays. We see color because objects reflect light. Something that is red reflects mostly red light. (It reflects a little green of blue light, too, but we do not see it.)In the same way,a green object reflects mostly green light. White objects reflect all colors of light Black objects do not reflect any light. What happens to the colors of light that are not reflected? They are absorbed by the object. The darker the color, the less light is reflected and the more light is absorbed. Light that is absorbed is turned into heat. For this reason,dark-colored clothes are warmer in the sunlight than light-colored clothes.2The sum spent on books and magazines seems small. Most families take at least one daily newspaper and a Sunday paper. They may take several weekly magazines, usually including the Radio Times (《无线电节目报》)。
