Reading comprehension is constituted by words and certain structure, with background in it. So it is important to know about the background. (Zeng, Z. 2010: 263)However, mostof the students have limited background knowledge. Especially the students in the rural district have not even watched an English movie or listened to an English song. They cannot acquire the culture of those countries, which speak English as the first language. When reading an English passage,the students always think in the Chinese pattern,they do not know how to think in another way. In other words, when students read, they may know every single word or structure of the sentence. But they don’t know what the sentence means because they have little background knowledge. Every English article must cover up with the social-cultural knowledge. Now, the following is going to analyze several common universal problems of English reading skills for middle school students.2.1.4.1 The Limited Skills of Dealing with Unfamiliar VocabulariesAs inexperienced students, they have no experience to handle the unfamiliar words, or even the familiar words with some other different uncommon meanings in different situations,or the same word matched with different prepositions.The reading needs to be finished in a limited time, but the students usually stumble on unfamiliar words. Many middle school students turn to a tool book forhelp once they come across a word they do not know or they know with another improper meaning, it will influence the continuity and the speed of the reading process. It needs logical analysis ability, which is developed in the process of practice. They have not read enough to get to a higher level. So as to improve their analysis ability, they should develop logical analysis ability in the whole process of learning, including learning other subjects and the daily life.2.1.4.3 The Loose Control of Reading SpeedOn account of unsatisfied experience of English reading, the middle school students have no idea of how to control the reading speed in a certain limited time. Sometimes they read too carefully to read aloud word by word with a pen underlining every word that they read. Sometimes they skim the passage without understanding the main idea of the passage, after they read the passage, they have no idea of that what the passage is talking about.They do not know in what kind of situation they should use intensive reading, and in what kind of situation they should use extensive reading. What is more, they do not know the strategies to intensive reading or extensive reading.
