13、Who touched the hearts of Chinese people in the past year? Luo Yang, 51, the father of China’s carrier jet, who devoted his whole life to the aircraft industry, is no doubt one such person.
Luo was the head of production for the new J-15 fighter. On November 25, he was joining in fighter jet landing exercises for the Liaoning as usual. Shortly after the successful landing of the J-15, Luo experienced a sudden heart attack. He was soon sent to the hospital but the doctors couldn’t save his life.
Luo was given an award for his special contribution(贡献)to the country by China Central Television on February 19. As general manager of the Shenyang Aircraft Corp, Luo didn’t use his power to improve the quality of his life. He gave up the chance to move into a new apartment. His suit was ten years old and his watch strap(带)was faded(褪色的).All he focused on was the aircraft industry.
Luo seldom had the time for a good chat with his wife and daughter. He always started work at 6 am and returned home around midnight when they were sleeping.
When devoted to his work, Luo always forgot about everything else. His final days were all spent on the J-15. At one point, he felt unwell, but he didn’t leave the carrier or see a doctor.
“I spent eight days on the carrier with Luo. He worked all day and night under huge pressure,” recalled Meng Jun, one of his colleagues(同事).
Luo’s death is a big loss to the country. His example, however, has inspired many people. “It’s a pity Luo Yang died when the aircraft carrier achieved success. It’s good to see more young people are entering this career now,” said Yang Yu, a commentator(评论员)for China Central Television.

14、Saying “thank you” is probably the first thing most of us learn to do in a foreign language. After all, we’re brought up to be kind and polite.
So, what exactly are you supposed to say when “thank you” is only the 20th most popular way to express gratitude (感激)? According to a recent report, 19 other ways of expressing gratitude finished ahead of “thank you” in a poll (投票) of
3,000 people.
Pollsters found almost half those asked preferred the more informal (非正式的) “cheers”, while ot hers liked to use such expressions as “ta”, “great” and “nice one”.
So, just what is the right form of words to express your thanks?
Luckily, the answer is in the language itself. “Cheers” is considered an informal way to say thank you. For example, when g oing for a drink with friends, a smile and a “cheers” by way of thanks is not only acceptable to the situation, it is also culturallyaccurate.
“Ta” was the second-most popular expression of thanks, and is also commonly used in informal situations, along with phrases such as “nice one”, and “wonderful”.
Interestingly, one word that didn’t make it into the top 20 was “thanks”. But “thanks” can be useful, as it is able to bridge the divide between “thank you” and the downright relaxed “cheers”.
Certain words can double as an expression of thanks as well as delight. For example, words like “awesome”, “brilliant” and “you star” can tell both your pleasure at someone’s action, as well as serving to express your thanks. If you are on the receiving end of a “new” thank you, you can reply with a simple “no problem”, or “sure”.
Of course, a simple wave, nod or smile may be all right. For example, if a car driver slows down to let you cross the road, simply raising your hand is enough to show that you are thankful for the driver’s consideration.
Sometimes, formality is necessary, and “thank you” is still the best choice in such situations. But students should not worry about when exactly to use certain expressions.
Many people in western countries are worried that good manners are in decline (衰退). People are tired of seeing their acts of kindness and service pass without any feedback. So don’t think that your “thank you” was useless or too formal. The chances are, if you said “thank you”, you made someone’s day.
1.(小题1)We can tell from the result of the poll that ______.

So, looking around, I grabbed a stack of(一摞) cards and a pencil and wrote, “if you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other..”

One was blank and one was cards from Kevin on which he had translated all hisyuckyfeeling into words for me. As I read one of Kevin’s notes, tears came to my eyes. 18、A turkey named Courage gave thanks to President Obama for saving his life on the day before Thanksgiving. Honouring a 62-year-old tradition, the President pardoned(赦免)the bird on Thanksgiving eve.
The tradition of a turkey pardon at Thanksgiving began with President Truman in 1947. Courage comes from Ellsworth, Iowa. The name Courage was chosen by voters (投票人)who took part in a survey posted on the White House website. The lucky turkey walked on the lawn of the Rose Garden and posed for the cameras at the presidential podium(讲台). The dinner that has become known as the First Thanksgiving was actually a harvest festival celebrated in December of
1621. That’s when English settlers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, gave thanks for the progress they had made after a hard winter in their new country. As America grew, Thanksgiving customs also spread and got bigger. George Washington declared that the first national Thanksgiving would be on November 26, 1789. In the decades to follow, however, people celebrated Thanksgiving locally, with no official date. President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November 1863 a national day of Thanksgiving. It stayed that way until 1939, when President Franklin D.Roosevelt moved it one week earlier. He wanted to lengthen the shopping period before Christmas to encourage gift-buyers and to help businesses. So Congress(议会)ruled that, after 1941, Thanksgiving would be an official federal holiday falling on the fourth Thursday of November.
This year we celebrated Thanksgiving on Thursday, November. Millions of Americans got together to give thanks with friends and family. The lucky turkey, Courage, was one of them. After his pardon, Courage would be sent to Disneyland Resort in California, where he would be the grand assemble of Disney’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Dear friends,
It’s my great honor to share with you my advice about how to learn English well. I have been learning English fo r several years, and I have many good ways to learn English well. First of all, I think it’s very important to take notes in class. We should listen to our teacher carefully and take notes carefully so as to review the knowledge points after class. Besides, we should listen to the tape and repeat aloud to improve our oral English level. In addition, watching English programs can also help us improve our English level quickly. What’s more, it’s also a good way to help us memorize English words by singing English songs. As long as we try our best to learn English, our English will improve rapidly.。
