You can not see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in our direction. So moon light is only second hand sunlight.

When one thinks of the expansion of the American West, the event most likely to come to mind is the California Gold Rush of 1849.However,there remained wide land between the Pacific Coast and,say,St.Louis,Missouri.Why mentions.St.Louis? You might be asking.Because the young United States started exploring the vast land mass to the west from that very point and almost fifty years before those gold nuggets started hitting the pan in California.

While some scientists overlook the existence of a sixth sense for danger, a new research from Washington University in St. Louis has identified a brain area that clearly acts as an early warning system and helps us adjust our behavior to avoid dangerous situations.
"Our brains are better at picking up not obvious warning signs than we previously thought," said Joshua Brown, PhD, a research associate in psychology in the Feb. 18 issue of the journal Science.
The findings offer exact scientific evidence for a new way to form a concept of the complex control processes taking place in and around the ACC, a brain area located near the top of the frontal lobes(耳垂) and along the walls that divide the left and right hemispheres(大脑半球).

Americans have developed an olive oil habit. Out to dinner recently, I saw a man dipping his white bread in olive oil and then pouring it all over his salad, saying, "Wow, this is so good for me!"
But is olive oil the healthiest fat? No, it's not. You might ask, doesn't it lower cholesterol(胆固醇)? Well, only when you substitute olive oil in equivalent amounts for butter or oils that are higher in saturated(饱和的) fat. Olive oil doesn't lower cholesterol; it just doesn't raise it as much.
You may be better off with canola(菜籽油) oil. The 1999 Lyon Diet Heart Study found that a Mediterranean diet significantly reduced heart attacks and premature deaths. Many people attributed this to eating a lot of olive oil. But it was increased consumption of canola oil that accounted for these improvements.

In so many ways, cyberspace(网络空间) mirrors the real world.People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips.Others buy and sell products.Still others look for friendship,or even love.
Some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed.Others end in tears.
Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen.Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace.Rather,a person’s thoughts or at least the thoughts they type are what really counts. So even the shyest person can become a chat room star.

Zhu Rongji, China’s premier between 1998 and 2003, is back in the center of public attention, talking once more with the media and the Chinese people.
This time, however, the words of the highly regarded speaker are in written form.
Zhu Rongji’s Answers to Journalists’ Questions, published by People’s Press, has been getting good reviews and 27,000 copies flew off the shelves in the first two days.
“Whatever lies ahead, be it a field of landmines(地雷阵)or unfathomable abyss(万丈深渊), I will exert all my efforts and contribute all my best to the country,” the former premier said in the book, which is a collection of comments from domestic and international press conferences.

Motorists over the age of 75 face compulsory tests of their eyesight and ability to drive under proposals being considered by ministers.

It is understood that the proposals will be part of a review of the law governing the medical fitness of drivers that will be announced publicly by the summer. The Driver and Vehicle Lic ensing Agency is dealing with a rising number of motorists who are concerned that they have conditions---from failing ey esight to epilepsy(癫痫)---that could affect their driving.
In 2006, the DVLA dealt with 600,000 motorists whose physical ability to drive needed to be recertified(重新认证), a 20 per cent rise on the previous year. With an ageing population, the biggest challenge is dealing with the rising number of elderly motorists.By 2021, there will be an estimated three million drivers over the age of 70 on Britain’s roads.
Drivers must renew their licenses at the age of 70 and every three years thereafter. The applicant is legally required to tell the DVLA of any conditions that could weaken their ability behind the wheel.
Ministers have ruled out a compulsory maximum age for driving but will instead rely on tightening up the checks on motorists over the age of 75.The most likely option would be tests to ensure motorists were fit to drive. They would include an eyesight test and a cognitive(认知) test that would prove a driver’s a bility to react to road signs, driving conditions, pedestrians and vehicles. However, checks are likely to be tightened at all ages. The strictest controls are expected to be imposed(强制) on motorists of any age who have had a heart attack
or stroke. They cou ld have to produce a doctor’s approval to be allowed to drive again.Anyone making a false declaration would be guilty of a criminal offence.68.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The new motoring law will come into effect by the summer.
B.Drivers over the age of 75 must renew their licenses every three years.C.Doctors will decide whether one can get their driving licenses.
D.Drivers at all ages will be expected to provide their medical condition.69.What is the biggest challenge to the traffic safety in Britain according to the writer?
A.Ageing population.B.Increasing number of cars.
C.Increasing number of elderly motorists. D.Driving conditions.70.The underlined word “overhaul” in Paragr aph 2 means _______.A.change B.problem C.concern D.challenge
71.Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the passage?
A.There will be more and more aged drivers in Britain.
B.Anyone can get a driving license as long as he/she is in good health.
C.Health tends to become worse as one gets old.
D.It will be guilty to make a false declaration.

Bad teeth can be painful — and worse. They can even be deadly. Infections (感染)of the gums (牙龈)and the teeth can cause bacteria (细菌)to go into the blood system. Those bacteria can increase the chance of a heart attack and worsen the effects of other diseases. And adults are not the only ones at risk.
For example, in 2007, doctors in the Washington area said a boy died when a tooth infection spread to his brain. They said it might have been prevented had he received the dental care (牙齿保健)he needed. He was twelve years old.
Experts at the National Institutes of Health say good dental care starts at birth. Breast milk, they say, is the best food for the healthy development of teeth. Breast
