Some parts of Earth absorb more heat than others. The air over these areas becomes warmer than the air around them. The warm air rises, and the cool air around it moves in to take its place.This moving air is called wind. Wind begins to form anywhere that air becomes heated and starts to move. Sometimes the wind moves slowly, and other times it moves fast and gains power and strength. Winds can become so strong and powerful that they can move things in their path. Tornadoes and hurricanes are examples of strong winds. They are wind energy at its fiercest.Wind power is used to move sailboats and windmills.Thousands of years ago, the ancient Egyptians used wind power. They put a sail ontheir boats. The sail caught the wind and helped move the boats along the Nile River. This technology may have been the start of the use of wind power by humans. Today, wind power is still used. Windmills can be found around the world. Like the ancient Egyptians, people still use wind to push against sails and to make sailboats move across water.Another invention that used wind power was the windmill. It is believed that the windmill was invented in Asia more than 2,000 years ago.People used the windmill to pump water or to grind grain. A central post in the mill was used to turn a stone that ground the grain. A modern model of it is shown in the picture directly above.Later on came the four-bladed mill wheel. This large wheel was placed horizontally on a structure called a postmill. The blades had to face directly into the wind at all times in order to turn.A keeper had to turn the postmill manually so that the blades faced the wind.A typical modern windmill has flat blades on a wheel. The wind pushes the blades and makes the wheel turn. The turning wheel produces energy.That energy is used to produce electricity. Modern windmills that produce electricity are more properly called wind turbines or wind generators.Wind energy is plentiful, widely distributed around the world, and clean.
