老婆婆的故事从前,我出生的那幢房子里,住着位老婆婆。

这袜子跟她的生命一样,越来越细。
临死那天,总算织完了脚趾那几针。
从早到晚,老婆婆最开心的头等大事就是给我讲故事,没牙的瘪嘴咕咕哝哝,而我呢,坐在一根长长的木柴上,双手紧紧攥住她的格子围裙。
她记性真叫绝,一百多年前的事情都一清二楚。
只管絮絮叨叨,诉说自己的经历与感想,常常把她年轻时就已死去的人的事也胡乱搅到一起,结果让人家把她当成了伊丽莎白女王时代的人,或者《祈祷书》里的约翰·罗杰斯①。
我脑瓜的角角落落大约塞满了她上千个故事。
有些妙不可言,有些马虎凑合,还有些味如嚼蜡。
所有故事我都想自己讲上一遍,若能跟老婆婆一样,有个人肯听我讲讲该多好。

她故事的基本情节极少合情合理,却充满普普通通的家常琐事。
悠悠岁月,日积月累,胡编乱造也俨然可以乱真。
好比魔鬼(这比喻恰如其分,是老婆婆自己说的)乔装打扮,虽面目狰狞,生着偶蹄,却也人模人样。
这些故事通常说的是她家乡康涅狄格的一座小山村,那村子的形象已被她活生生印在我脑子里。
那一带长久以来是片蛮荒危险的边地,人们的房子都造得牢固坚实好保护自己。
不少房子保存完好,直至今天。
一连两个夏天我都乘车去过这座如今的小镇,喜出望外地发现一座座建筑似曾相识,好像一连串梦境化为现实。
同样可以乱真的事还有一件,老婆婆楞说这村里的男女老少(有段时间,但到底是二十五年、五十年,还是一百年,说不准)会同时昏睡过去,一睡一点钟。
每逢这神秘的时辰一到,牧师先生布道词才写了一半就打起鼾来,虽说已是星期六晚上,该为第二天做准备的事儿也丢下不管了。
