The young Theresa Brasier threw herself into village life. Friends recall a tall, fashion-conscious young woman who from an early age spoke of her ambition to be the first woman prime minister.Like Margaret Thatcher, she went to Oxford University to study. In 1976, in her third year, she met her husband Philip May. The story went that they were introduced at a Conservative Association disco and got married four years later. Her university friend Pat Frankland, speaking in 2011 on a BBC Radio 4, said:“I cannot remember a time when she did not have political ambitions. ”There are no tales of drunken student celebration, but Pat Frankland and other friends say May was not the serious figure she would later come to be seen as, saying she had a sense of fun and a full social life. After graduating with a degree in geography, May went to work in the Bank of England. But it was already clear that she saw her future in politics. Like Margaret Thatcher, it took a bit of time for her to find hers. The business inspiration came from something he saw on TV. “I was watching a documentary about electronic recycling, and I realised there was a lot of potential in extracting metals from mother boards — gold, silver, copper, and platinum,” he says. “It was a booming industry in Europe and the US, but no one in the Middle East was doing it.” It was at that moment that the idea for Recyclobekia was born.Recyclobekia’s first order soon followed when a buyer in Hong Kong ordered 10 tonnes of hard disks. Despite partnering with companies to buy their waste, the amount they provided was much lower than Recyclobekia expected, and in six months it had only managed to gather six tonnes.Mr. Hemdan realised he needed to quickly improve his professional knowledge of the industry. So he flew to Hong Kong to study the work of recycling firms. The trip made Mr. Hemdan realise that he had to make a difference. At the time it was simply collecting the old electronic items and sending them off to its buyer in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong firm would then break them apart, separate the materials, and sell them on to other companies which melted down and extracted the individual metals.Mr. Hemdan realised Recyclobekia could get a better price, for waste that had already been broken up and separated. So he ended the Hong Kong deal, and instead signed up with a German extraction company. This also reduced Recyclobekia’s shipping costs.Today, the Egyptian businessman sells $2.4m of electronic waste per year.8. Which of the following is the best title?A. Turning Rubbish into GoldB. Rising from the MistakesC. Recycling Domestic WasteD. Seeking Business Potentials9. We can infer that ________.A. Mostafa Hemdan has already expanded his business across the Middle EastB. Recyclobekia was seriously punished for its ending the Hong Kong dealC. Recyclobekia is now one of the most famous companies in the Middle EastD. Recyclobekia is one of the first businesses in Egypt to recycle electronic waste10. What did Mr. Hemdan decide to do after he returned from Hong Kong?A. He decided to reduce the shipping costs.B. He decided to change his business model.C. He decided to update his professional skills.D. He decided to improve the product designs.11. Recyclobekia now makes more profits by ________.A. selling electronic productsB. extracting the rare metalsC. sorting out electronic wasteD. shipping electronic wasteDVinegar is great. It makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even clean your windows with it. And now, according to scientists, it may even help the planet’s population survive climate change. Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan proved that. They found growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate (醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar. After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmersin dry countries keep their crops alive. “In the experiment, we targeted the staple foods of the world—rice, wheat and maize…and proved successful” Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine.Kim has already been in touch with people around the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from farmers to companies and amateur gardeners. “Now we are trying to cooperate with them to make a method to apply this system, and make the process as simple as possible,” he said. Hopefully this means the end of hunger caused by bad weather in the future.12. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 1 refer to?A. Vinegar may help creatures survive bad weather.B. Vinegar is found in plants by Japanese scientists.C. Vinegar is very useful for cooking a good meal.D. Vinegar is mainly used by people to clean houses.13. Scientists in Japan find from their studies that ________.A. the Arabidopsis could survive in dry weather because of the shapeB. soil condition could be changed by pouring vinegar continuallyC. the acetate can be used by farmers to replace the soilD. the plants treated with acetate could survive dry conditions14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. It’s too difficult for farmers to accept the method.B. How to decrease the cost is the main issue.C. The method is promising especially in agriculture.D. Keeping plants alive means a lot for scientists.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Japanese Scientists Find a PlantB. Vinegar Could End HungerC.

A lovely bear—popular in the US and UK一that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”.A slimmed-down version of London’s Independent newspaper was stated last week under the name “i”.In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use. Most “i” products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name. But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Wh y not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPad , it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he says.“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability.” adds Thorne.Clearly the letter “i” also agrees w ith the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade. But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.28. People use iPlayer to ___________.A. listen to musicB. make a callC. watch TV programs onlineD. read newspapers29. We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is designe d for _________.A. old readersB. young readersC. fashionable womenD. engineers30. The underlined word “ambiguous” means “ ____________.”A. popularB. uniqueC. clearD. uncertain31. The writer suggests that ____________.A. “i” products are often of high qualityB. iTeddy is a live bearC. the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the productsD. the popularity of “i” products may not last longDYou are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast-moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks. There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress. Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute(降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous actions. For nowadays there are stuntwomen, too!32. Stuntmen earn their living by__________ .A. playing their dirty tricksB. jumping out of high windowsC. selling their special skillsD. jumping from fast-moving trains33. When a stuntman falls from a high building, ______________ .A. he needs little protectionB. he will be covered with a mattressC. his life is endangeredD. his safety is generally all right34. Which of the following is the main factor of a successful performance?A. Strength.B. Exactness.C. Speed.D. Carefulness.35. What can be inferred from the author’s example of the Norwegian stuntman?A. The percentage of serious accidents is high.B. Sometimes an accident can occur to a stuntman.C. Parachutes must be of good quality.D. The cliff is too high.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water. For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had afishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water— two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw (生的). Then the line broke. ―So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks (鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface.
