• 如今随着中国的入世，英语作为一种国际 性的语言也铺天盖地的进入了中国的各个 地方，英语热随之兴起，面对着气势上咄 咄逼人的英语，母语陷入了前所未有的困 境，各种言论在媒体上打着口水战，让我 们无从抉择。事实上，我们该辩证地看待 这个问题。
英语在中国学子心中的地位
• 说到英语的地位，某大学一位教师总结说： “‘英语不好，就不是好的人才’似乎是一 个公认的结论！” 按照目前的人才培养和选 拔制度，不管你是搞中药、二十四史、古汉 语的，还是当技术员、工程师、教师甚至做 内勤，无论专业能力，也无论对提高工作业 绩的帮助有多大，只要晋职、评职称如此之 类，如果英语不好，一切都只能是空谈。” 在某记者的调查中，众多的大学生表示他们 的英语学习时间和所有专业课的学习时间平 分秋色。
地位只与实力有关
所以不要在那里说什么英语的不完善，复杂。 汉语的多么艺术，多么精练，这些都不是语言 争霸赛的本质，也无济于事，唯一作用就是自 我安慰和自我陶醉。 套用一句话，“发展才是硬道理” 。 只要诺贝尔奖得主80%集中在中国，那么 全世界的科学家想学习最高深的科技，他就必 须掌握汉语，否则难以深刻理解别人的思想。 也就无法进步。

众所周知，英语是当今世界上主要的国际通用语 之一。 据统计，当今世界以英语为母语的人口已达三亿 两千万以上，差不多每十个人中就有一个人讲英 语。此外，世界上多还有六亿人，即每五个中就 有一个在一定程度上懂英语。从使用范围来看， 英语也是也是当今世界上主要通用语。英特网上 四分之三的信息是用英语写的,世界上百分之七 十以上的邮件用英文书写，或用英文注明地址； 全世界的广播节目中，百分之六十以上用英语进 行;国际政治、经商、文化、贸易、交通运输等 领域，无不以英文为其交往工具。

有人说“只需要一些翻译就够了。” 我说这个看法太片面，太简单了。 翻译不可能精通所有行业，而且他精通 的行业还是不能和专业人士相比。 比如医学界，想要真正完美的翻译医学 文献，除非他既是翻译家，又是医学家。 而且你需要的东西多半不会有人翻译， 翻译们的着眼点是尽可能大众的东西，那些 专业的东西，虽然少，但是作用巨大，可是 翻译们报酬不多，没有人愿意做的。
