When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on
a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes are in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising---and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.
( ) 49. Which of the following is true about the writer?
A. He lives in the city now.
B. He is in good health.
C. He prefers driving a car.
D. He is very old now.
( ) 50. In the passage, the writer tries to _______.
A. show an interest in the outside world.
B. describe his life in the countryside.
C. express his opinions about ways of life.
D. persuade the reader to live in the city.
( ) 51. How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By comparing
B. By inferring
C. By telling stories
D. By showing worries

Molly employs (雇佣) around eighty people in her factory and warehouse, and ten others in her two new fashion stores, but her newest employee is the most important one for her. After years of worrying about her business more than her family, she has decided to make Sally Pamonte new general manager in her company. Molly will still be involved in decision- making, and she’s going to stay in touch with the people who work for her, but Sally is going to look after day-to-day running of the business so that Molly can spend more time with the kids.
The new arrangement (安排) is going to start on Monday, and both of them are already excited about it. Sally says, “I’m very nervous, actually, but I’m sure Molly will help me a lot in the early days, even though I hope she feels she can trust me not to make too many mistakes.”
Molly, on the other hand, seems quite relaxed about the whole thing. ”I know that Sally’s going to be a very nice manager.” she says, “She’s only been here a couple of days and she’s already shown me how to work out a few problems we were having. The best thing though is that I fee l a hundred times happier than I’ve been in years.

Too much TV-watching can harm children’s ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children.
One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms
scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs.
A second study ,looking at nearly 1000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among
26-year –olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don’t say that TV is the cause and don't rule out that already poorly motivated young people may watch lots of TV.
Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages5 and 15. Those with college degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2.5 hours for those who had no education beyond high school.
In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest.
While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to accumulating findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms.
( ) 57. According to the California study, the low-scoring group might _________.
A. have watched a lot of TV
B. not be interested in math
C. be unable to go to college
D. have had computers in their bedrooms
( ) 58. What is the researchers' understanding of the New Zealand study results?
A. Poorly motivated 26-year-olds watch more TV.
B. Habits of TV watching reduce learning interest.
C. TV watching leads to lower education levels of the 15-year-olds.
D. The connection between TV and education levels is difficult to explain
( ) 59. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. More time should be spent on computers.
B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV.
C. TV sets shouldn't be allowed in children's bedrooms,
D. Further studies on high-achieving students should be done
( ) 60. What would be the best title for this text?
A. Computers or Television
B. Effects of Television on Children
C. Studies on TV and College Education
D. Television and Children's Learning Habits

Do's And Don'ts Of Donating
Giving up your unused or unwanted stuff is a great way to make space in your home for the items that you do enjoy on a regular basis. 1 Here are 4 do's and don'ts of donating your belongings.
Do Prep Your Clothes
You've thoroughly cleaned out your closets and drawers, and have a mountain of clothing waiting to be donated. Before you bag up these pieces, examine each one to ensure that they’re in good condition. Make sure all buttons are fastened, and that you can't see any dirty spots. 2
Don’t Donate Damaged Items
The number one rule of donating your stuff is to make sure that it' s in good, useable condition. Don’t donate clothes or furniture with rips(裂口)or stains, chipped dishes, or books that are missing pages. 3 Find a local company that will recycle these items instead.
Do Donate More Than Just Clothes
4 Stuffed animals, framed pictures, unused candles, small power tools, sports equipment, ornaments, baskets, blenders, dishes, glassware, utensils, silverware, pots and pans, curtains, blankets, toasters, mixers, pillows, towels, bed sheets, bikes, and exercise equipment are pretty popular donations.
5 With a little common sense it's easy to figure out items that are ideal for donation. But unfortunately some people will throw away the contents of their home without a second thought. As a gentle reminder, it’s never a good idea to donate car parts, flammable products, construction materials, weapons, or explosives.
A.Nobody wants to take over your damaged belongings.
B.Food donations are always in need.
C.Don’t Even Think of Donating These Items
D.Not sure where to start?

Nowadays in school life,a lot of students develop a fear of tests. It’s not because tests are
something to be afraid of. Most stud ents are afraid of tests mainly because they don’t have enough
self-confidence and they don’t always think they are well prepared. If you follow the tips below, it’s
not difficult to overcome(克服)your fear of tests.
People who know that they are not well-prepared are usually those who fear test most. However
most students don’t know when they are truly prepared for a test. As long as(只要)you know that
you have studied well and long enough, you have reason to believe that you are well-prepared.
Be confident about yourself. Confidence before a test can bring about two things: either you fail
the test and feel as if your confidence was unfounded(毫无根据)or you could actually do well in the
test because of your confidence. Some students find that they experience the first result. However,
this is only because those students might not have followed the first tip mentioned above. As long as
you have studied well, you will be more confident of your chance to succeed in a test. If you feel as
if you have not studied hard enough, then you will not be as confident as you should be.
Ask your teacher in advance(提前)about the material that is going to be covered in the test .
In this way, you will know what you should prepare for and you can get confidence in the test. But
you have to be brave enough to ask. Most students do not ask unless their teacher gives the
information first, so make sure that you ask.
You should know that tests are only telling if you have got the knowledge, not how good or bad
your IQ is. So, even if you do badly in one test, you should know that there are other tests to come.
As long as you think that there is another tomorrow, you can overcome your fear of a test .However,
make sure that you are going to prepare well for the other tests.
Fear can be a problem in the process of achieving success. However, with the right attitude(态
