The cruelty of success is that it often leads those who seek such success to participate in their own destruction.

"Don't quit your day job!" is advice frequently given by understandably pessimistic family members and friends to a budding artist who is trying hard to succeed.

Love and logic: The story of fallacy爱情与逻辑:谬误的故事I had my first date with Polly after I made the trade with my roommate Rob. That year every guy on campus had a leather jacket, and Rob couldn't stand the idea of being the only football player who didn't, so he made a pact that he'd give me his girl in exchange for my jacket. He wasn't the brightest guy. Polly wasn't too shrewd, either.

But she was pretty, well-off, didn't dye her hair strange colors or wear too much makeup. She had the right background to be the girlfriend of a dogged, brilliant lawyer. If I could show the elite law firms I applied to that I had a radiant, well-spoken counterpart by my side, I just might edge past the competition.

1Have you ever known anyone famous? If so, you may have found that they are remarkably similar to the rest of us. You may have even heard them to people saying there is anything different about them. "I'm really just a normal guy," an actor who has recently rocketed into the spotlight. There is, of course, usually a brief period while they are popular when they actually start to believe they are as great as their fans suggest. They start to wear clothes and talk as if everyone should hear what they have to say. This period, however, does not often last long. They fall back to reality as fast as they had risen above it all. What will it feel like to soar to such and look down like an eagle from up high on everyone else? And what will it feel like to have flown so high only to from your dream and realize you are only human? Some only see the in losing something they had gained. They often make attempts to regain what they lost. Often these efforts result in even greater pain. Some become financially and emotionally. The only real winners are those who are happy to be back on the ground with the rest of us.2Have you ever heard of Jon Stewart? He is currently one of the most popular comics on television. His pessimistic view of the politics and governmentlaughter, thought and even anger. He has a clever wit that often runs into with some government policies. His whole show is to making fun of the nonsense that occurs in politics. But, what makes his show so is his ability to tell his jokes with intelligence."It's not just comedy," said one media expert. "His comments have a lot of over a very large audience in America. He has a lot of political power." Recently Stewart was a guest on a news show about politics. The host journalist a heated debate when he about Stewart's responsibility to the American public. Stewart argued that while the content of the script for his show may be political in nature, his primary is to entertain. The host journalist, however, emphasized the political influence of his performance. The argument ended up anger from both parties. The incident how sensitive some people can be to what others find funny. It also showed how important comedians have become to politics.3What happens in America when someone becomes disabled and cannot do the kind of work they did in the past? If someone has been injured on the job, they are supposed to the medical worker, who would certify that there was a problem. Then, they may receive from the company. If the company provides a(n) , the person may receive money monthly to make up for lostwages. The person who has been disabled may also take the company to court if safety was at the workplace. This usually results in of a payment to settle the dispute. In addition, all workplaces are required to pay money to the government for a program to take care of people disabled on the job. One in this program requires workplaces where more injuries to pay more money. For this reason companies that require heavy physical labor take safety very seriously. Most people disability insurance. They think it is that a person should get paid without working. In fact, this benefit is usually not enough to cover the rent and other bills of those who receive it. Most of the disabled still want to work, but from the injury and training for other types of employment takes time.4Mr. Li runs a small trade company in Sichuan province. He used to be worried about the sales of his goods, but now he simply logs on to the Internet and the information about his company to almost anywhere. He now has so many resources at his than before. He has even started to in foreign countries and make money almost anywhere. The revolution has certainly changed the way we look at the world. And, most importantly, it allows people to get equal to the information. People in less developed areas of the world are taking of the benefits as well. Oneperson says, "I used to have a small farm, but now I am doing international business." This is just one of the many benefits of the information . There are, however, some challenges we will have to face. For example, there is a great deal of concern over in the Information Age. Mr. Li this point. Hopefully, we can solve this problem in the near future.5How do you spend your time when you're alone? Do you turn up your music as loud as you can and listen to your own entertainment? Do you buy yourself the biggest steak you could find and sit down to a good meal? It has been my observation that these activities can be the best type of for a troubled mind. It is crucial for humans to find some in life. They must find some time to let the universe go spinning on without others' . The portion of this world that to one person is increasingly becoming smaller. And whatever we do have we must with others. Therefore, our ability to maintain a healthy balance between social and personal pursuits is being challenged. Inspiration in solitude is a major not only for poets and philosophers but for ordinary people as well. A healthy adult needs "alone-time"; time to on what is truly important to them. When you are alone, you can out your soul until it fills up the whole room, and use yourfreedom, moving at your own pace. However, it's important to stay . Don't forget that in order to be a healthy part of others' lives, you must yourself be healthy.6In the past several years, many news stories about corporate greed have come to surface. The illegal practices of some executives have impacted our economy. What makes this worse is that these executives seem to have the of some political leaders. Some of the executives even lawmakers. Recently a member of Congress from California was caught demanding gifts from interest groups in for supporting new laws. A few top leaders in the government are under for illegal activities. This doesn't even the surface of the problem. A few years back a company made many purposeful errors to fool investors. Many believe that one reason the problem became so big was that our nation's top leaders the company. By the time the truth was , many innocent people had lost their entire savings. There seems to be more and more companies that the public's trust for their own interests. This calls for laws and strict regulations to put the illegal practice to an end.7I have read The History and Geography of Human Genes by Luca Cavalli-Sforza but still have some questions. Even though these findings seemingly prove that races are essentially equal on a genetic level, there are differences unexplained. It was Darwin who first the theory of natural selection. His notion was that certain characteristics that help that species are selected over generations by that species. The species does not consciously make the choice for gene . Instead, by surviving longer and being more fruitful, members of that species with the preferred genes gradually become the breed. We may, as a species, all have our existence in one location, but this was long long ago. Factors such as climate and other survival necessities have created needs for . I believe these factors have contributed to races evolving with different . This explains the such as Asians receiving better science and math scores. It also light on why there are so many excellent athletes from Africa. I understand that this is a particularly statement. This is especially true in an age when races are mixing and the peoples of this planet are attempting to learn to live together.8To look at me, you would never guess I am in my late sixties. Most people that. I just smile and say, "A lady never her age." There are good reasonswhy a lady doesn't. Older women get ignored in our society. We are and left to grow old without the company of others. I understood from a very young age our society against the old. Our society is against women. And, our society makes based on the color of a person's skin. I am an old black woman. I have to use my every advantage in order to a vital part of my community. I have managed to stay fit, to my looks while my wisdom increases. Often younger men my abilities. However, I should tell you that I am very skilled in the art of politics. I was for many years the mayor of a large urban center in the Southern United States. After that I was selected by my district to them in Congress. I advise other women over sixty not to give up! Old as we are, we have experience and know more about life. Let's not let our knowledge and experience go to waste.9The Disney Legends program was established in 1987 to and honor the many individuals whose imagination, talents and dreams have the Disney magic. The awards are given annually during a(n) at the Walt Disney Studios. The Legends are chosen by a selection committee chosen by Roy E. Disney. Since its inception (开始), the program has honored many animators, songwriters, actors and business leaders as having made a significant on the Disney legacy. In 1997, the Legends program was established in Europe with a ceremony held at Disneyland Paris, commemorating the 5th of the park and honoring those who established many of the Disney European businesses. During the ceremony, a 14-foot bronze enlargement of the Disney Legends award was unveiled as an enduring of their contributions. On October 16, 1998, the new Disney Legends Plaza was at the Walt Disney Studios to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. The Plaza a second edition of the bronze sculpture first placed in Disneyland Paris, with bronze plaques the individual Legends lining the columns of the Plaza. Each year, new Legends will join this celebrated group so that we may always remember the gifts of those people who know the secret of making dreams come true.10As a boss, I have dealt with all types of employees. The ones that are the least are those who are not adaptive. They may have high IQ points, but they just don't understand how to their theories to reality. I recently read a book by Daniel Goleman, which that the true measure of intelligence was not IQ,but rather EQ or Emotional Intelligence. This made a lot of to me. I have never been at the top of my class, but I have always been and worked well with other people. I have always taken good communication skills my number one priority. I think only testing how well a person solves complicated academic problems fails to take into other abilities, which can be just as and even more so to a person's accomplishments. In fact, many of the "idea people" have a real hard time getting their point across. They simply don't have the skills to how valuable their idea might be. Sure, the world would be lost without these "idea people", but I'd rather hire someone with EQ. The higher a person's EQ is, the better they will be able to the great ideas they have. The real trick is finding someone who combines both.。

The offensive had lasted three days, but we had not gained much ground. The division commander instructed our battalion to get around to the rear of the enemy at night and launch a surprise attack. To do this we have to cross a marshland, and many of us were afraid we might get bogged down in the mud. Our battalion commander decided to take a gamble. Luckily enough, thanks to the severely cold weather which had made the marshland freeze over, we arrived our destination before dawn and began attacking the enemy from the rear. This had turned the tide of the battle. The enemy, caught off guard, soon surrendered.

Unit 11) "So you want to be a rock and roll star?" asked the musician, Bib Dylan. You have decided to seek fame's spotlight. And you will not be persuaded otherwise. What is it that lures you? Is it the worshiping fans? Or is it simply to be recognized for being truly fantastic at something? This is all quite understandable. I should warn you, though. Itis difficult to sustain the public's favor. These people will grow bored so easily. Even if you should succeed, you might not be happy, once you win in your conquest of fame, complaints will follow. For example, people will say that yourwork fails to show a lack of continuity in its appeal. You see, their enthusiasm will soon dissolve. I should also tell you that there will be plenty of people who will want to exploit you during your brief stay at the top. Friends? Sure, as long as you have money you'll have friends who will suck everything you have out of you. And don't forget to watch youragent closely. You might need a good lawyer and an accountant, but they too will want their piece of the pie —making money out of you.2) I see you understand the cruelty of the situation. However, your chase for fame can't be discouraged by my pessimistic outlook. Go ahead then. Don't ket me stop you. But when you fail of fall right back where you started and you're miserable, don't accuse me of not having warned you. I've done all that I can for you.“所以,你要成为一个摇滚明星?”

It is crucial for humans to find some in life. They must find some time to let the universe go spinning on without others' . The portion of this world that to one person is increasingly becoming smaller. And whatever we do have we must with others. Therefore; our ability to maintain a healthy balance between social and personal pursuits is being challenged. Inspiration in solitude is a major not only for poets and philosophers but for ordinary people as well. A healthy adult needs "alone-time"; time to on what is truly important to them. When you are alone; you can out your soul until it fills up the whole room; and use your freedom; moving at your own pace. However; it's important to stay .

Unit 5Section A Choose to be alone on purposeHere we are, all by ourselves, all 22 million of us by recent count, alone in our rooms, some of us liking it that way and some of us not. Some of us divorced, some widowed, some never yet committed.Loneliness may be a sort of national disease here, and it's more embarrassing for us to admit than any other sin. On the other hand, to be alone on purpose, having rejected company rather than been cast out by it, is one characteristic of an American hero. The solitary hunter or explorer needs no one as they venture out among the deer and wolves to tame the great wild areas. Thoreau, alone in his cabin on the pond, his back deliberately turned to the town. Now, that's character for you. Inspiration in solitude is a major commodity for poets and philosophers. They're all for it. They all speak highly of themselves for seeking it out, at least for an hour or even two before they hurry home for tea.Consider Dorothy Wordsworth, for instance, helping her brother William put on his coat, finding his notebook and pencil for him, and waving as he sets forth into the early spring sunlight to look at flowers all by himself. “How graceful, how benign, is soli tude,” he wrote. No doubt about it, solitude is improved by being voluntary.Look at Milton's daughters arranging his cushions and blankets before they silently creep away, so he can create poetry. Then, rather than trouble to put it in his own handwriting, he calls the girls to come back and write it down while he dictates. You may have noticed that most of these artistic types went outdoors to be alone. The indoors was full of loved ones keeping the kettle warm till they came home. The American high priest of solitude was Thoreau. We admire him, not for his self-reliance, but because he was all by himself out there at Walden Pond, and he wanted to be. All alone in the woods.Actually, he lived a mile, or 20 minutes' walk, from his nearest neighbor; half a mile from the railroad; three hundred yards from a busy road. He had company in and out of the hut all day, asking him how he could possibly be so noble. Apparently themain point of his nobility was that he had neither wife nor servants, used his own axe to chop his own wood, and washed his own cups and saucers. I don't know who did his laundry; he doesn't say, but he certainly doesn't mention doing his own, either. Listen to him: “I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.”Thoreau had his own self-importance for company. Perhaps there's a message here. The larger the ego, the less the need for other egos around. The more modest and humble we feel, the more we suffer from solitude, feeling ourselves inadequate company. If you live with other people, their temporary absence can be refreshing. Solitude will end on Thursday. If today I use a singular personal pronoun to refer to myself, next week I will use the plural form. While the others are absent you can stretch out your soul until it fills up the whole room, and use your freedom, coming and going as you please without apology, staying up late to read, soaking in the bath, eating a whole pint of ice cream at one sitting, moving at your own pace. Those absent will be back. Their waterproof winter coats are in the closet and the dog keeps watching for them at the window. But when you live alone, the temporary absence of your friends and acquaintances leaves a vacuum; they may never come back. The condition of loneliness rises and falls, but the need to talk goes on forever. It's more basic than needing to listen. Oh, we all have friends we can tell important things to, people we can call to say we lost our job or fell on a slippery floor and broke our arm. It's the daily succession of small complaints and observations and opinions that backs up and chokes us. We can't really call a friend to say we got a parcel from our sister, or it's getting dark earlier now, or we don't trust that new Supreme Court justice.Scientific surveys show that we who live alone talk at length to ourselves and our pets and the television. We ask the cat whether we should wear the blue suit or the yellow dress. We ask the parrot if we should prepare steak, or noodles for dinner. We argue with ourselves over who is the greater sportsman: that figure skater or this skier. There's nothing wrong with this. It's good for us, and a lot less embarrassing than the woman in front of us in line at the market who's telling the cashier that her niece Melissa may be coming to visit on Saturday, and Melissa is very fond of hot chocolate, which is why she bought the powdered hot chocolate mix, though she never drinks it herself. It's important to stay rational. It's important to stop waiting and settle down and make ourselves comfortable, at least temporarily, and find some grace and pleasure in our condition, not like a self-centered British poet but like a patient princess sealed up in a tower, waiting for the happy ending to our fairy tale. After all, here we are. It may not be where we expected to be, but for the time being we might as well call it home. Anyway, there is no place like home.

What is the most valuable contribution employees make to their companies, knowledge or judgment?I say judgment.Knowledge, no matter how broad, is useless until it is applied.<P1>And application takes judgment, which involves something of a sixth sense—a high performance of the mind. This raises interesting questions about the best training for today's business people. As Daniel Goleman suggests in his new book, <em>Emotional Intelligence</em>, the latest scientific findings seem to <P2>indicate that intelligent but inflexible people don't have the right stuff in an age when the adaptive bility is the key to survival. In a recent cover story, <em>Time</em> magazine sorted through the current thinking on intelligence and reported, "New brain research suggests that emotions, not IQ, may be the true measure of human intelligence."The basic significance of the emotional intelligence that <em>Time</em> called "EQ" was suggested by management expert Karen Boylston: "Customers are telling businesses, 'I don't care if every member of your staff graduated from Harvard. I will take my business and go where I am understood and treated with respect.'"<P3>If the evolutionary pressures of the marketplace are making EQ, not IQ, the hot ticket for business success, it seems likely that individuals will want to know how to cultivate it.I have a modest proposal: Embrace a highly personal practice aimed at improving these four adaptive skills.<em>Raising consciousness</em>.<P4>I think of this as thinking differently on purpose.<P5>It's about noticing what you are feeling and thinking and escaping the conditioned confines of your past.<P6>Raise your consciousness by catching yourself in the act of thinking as often as possible. Routinely take note of your emotions and ask if you're facing facts or avoiding them.<em>Using imagery</em>.This is what you see Olympic ski racers doing before entering the starting gate. With their eyes closed and bodies swaying, they run the course in their minds first, which improves their performance. You can do the same by setting aside time each day to dream with passion about what you want to achieve.<em>Considering and reconsidering events to choose the most creative response to them</em>. <P7>When a Greek philosopher said 2,000 years ago that it isn't events that matter but our opinion of them, this is what he was talking about.Every time something important happens, assign as many interpretations to it as possible, even crazy ones. Then go with the interpretation most supportive of your dreams.<em>Integrating the perspectives of others</em>.Brain research shows that our view of the world is limited by our genes and the experiences we've had.<P8>Learning to <1>incorporate</1> the useful perspectives of others is nothing less than a form of enlarging your senses. The next time someone interprets something differently from you—say, a controversial political event—pause to reflect on the role of life experience and consider it a gift of perception.<P9>The force of habit—literally the established wiring of your brain—will pull you away from practicing these skills.Keep at it, however, because they are based on what we're learning about the mechanism of the mind.Within the first six months of life the human brain doubles in capacity. It doubles again by age four and then grows rapidly until we reach sexual maturity. The body has about a hundred billion nerve cells, and every experience <2>triggers</2> a brain response that literally shapes our senses. The mind, we now know, is not confined to the brain but is distributed throughout the body's universe of cells.Yes, we do think with our hearts, brains, muscles, blood and bones.During a single crucial three-week period during our teenage years, chemical activity in the brain is cut in half.<P10>That done, we are "biologically wired" with what one of the nation's leading brain researchers calls our own "world view".He says it is impossible for any two people to see the world exactly alike. So unique is the personal experience that people would understand the world differently. However, it is not only possible to change your world view, he says, it's actually easier than overcoming a drug habit.<P11>But you need a discipline for doing it.Hence, the method recommended here.<P12>No, it's not a curriculum in the sense that an MBA is.But the latest research seems to imply that without the software of emotional maturity and self-knowledge, the hardware of academic training alone is worth less and less.

The only real winners are those who are happy to be back on the ground with the rest of us.

3What happens in America when someone becomes disabled and cannot do the kind of work they did in the past?
