所有的阅读文章,无论文章背景是什么,结构无非会分为以下几种,《新托福考试官方指南》上把托福文章结构类型大致分为四类:classification(分类),comparison/contrast(比较),cause/effect(因果),problem/solution(问题与解决方法)。

The final event in the Olympics is the marathon. It is also usually the most exciting. As the leader comes into the stadium to run the last few meters of the 42- -kilometre race, the crowd rises to its feet to shout and cheer. The name of the race comes from a battle in Ancient Greece. According to the story, a soldier ran from the scene of the battle, Marathon, to Athens, to bring the news of a Greek victory against the Persians. He died just after arriving. The marathon has been an Olympic event since the modern games started in 1896. At first the distance was 40 kilometers — the distance between Marathon and Athens. In 1908, however, at the London Olympics, it was changed. The King of England wanted the runners to leave from his castle in Windsor and arrive in a new stadium in central London. The distance was 26 miles —about 42 kilometers. In fact, the 1908 marathon ended dramatically When the leader, an Italian, entered the stadium he turned the wrong way and fell onto the ground. Officials picked him up and helped him to the finishing line, just as the second runner, an American, entered the stadium. The Americans protested (抗议) and in the end the American runner was declared (宣布) the winner. Since then, there have been many more exciting marathons. In fact, you don’t have to wait for the Olympic Games to run or watch a marathon, as there are marathons in over sixty countries and hundreds of cities around the world today. One of the most famous marathons is in New York, and is watched by two million people around the streets and across the bridges of the city’s five boroughts (纽约市的行政区), and past New York’s famous landmarks. But perhaps one of the most beautiful and extraordinary (最特别的) marathons ever is the Great Wall Marathon, which most competitors find is the toughest course to run.The marathon is the final Olympic event because it is thought to be the hardest. But experts believe that most people — even people who are not particularly good at sport — can run a marathon, if they train for it.Please answer the following questions.1. What is the origin of the marathon?2. Why is the marathon the last Olympic event?TOPIC READING1. Legend says a Greek soldier ran from Marathon to Athens to tell the news of a Greek victory against the Persians.2. Because it is thought to be the hardest event.。

When asked why she has the picture, Merkel says, “She was a strong woman”. Many say the same of Merkel. The most powerful woman in the world, according to US Forbes (福布斯) magazine, was in China last week. She came to discuss trade and environmental issues with China’s top leaders.Germany’s first woman leader is known as a brave and down-to-earth statesman (政治家). Even since her time at school, she had the habit of getting everything in order. Every day before doing her homework she would clean the desk and think about what to do next. “I prefer a long time for full preparations to make my decision. But once I decide, I will stand up for what I believe,” Merkel said.Perhaps it was good habits that helped her do well in her studies. At 32, she got a doctorate (博士学位) in physics and then she worked as a researcher. However, the life of a scholar (学者) couldn’t put her off a love of politics. While working in labs, Merkel took time off to read political books and at last join a political party. “Her calmness helped her stand out in the party. She could always find a way out while others felt hopeless,” said one of her old friends. In her first big political job as Minister for the Environment in 1994, her scientific background proved very useful. In 2005 she became Germany’s youngest chancellor since World War II.Now half way through her four-year term, the 53-year-old woman has made a name for herself both in Germany and abroad. At the EU summit (峰会) in 2005 when France quarreled with Britain over the EU budget (预算), some people believed the EU was close to breaking down. But Merkel didn’t give up. She shuttled (穿梭) between the heads of the two powers and got them to compromise (妥协).“Strength comes from composure (镇定) and courage. Many people say I am a strong woman. But I would rather say I have perseverance (恒心) ,” said Merkel.Merkel’s love of the ‘beautiful game’There are many sides to the Hamburg-born woman. For example, did you know she is a football fan? Last year a leading German sports magazine interviewed her. Her answers left no one in doubt about her passion (热情) and knowledge of the game. She could even explain the offside (越位) rule! She also said she likes to have company when watching football. During EURO 96, when she was Minister for the Environment, she went into a pub to watch games on TV.高中英语话题阅读(二)Do you prefer the British or American accent?MANY English learners have difficulty deciding what kind of English accent they want to have.

1More and more students prefer to use e—dictionaries nowadays due to their convenience and smartness。
But as far as I am concerned, I’l l choose a paper dictionary rather than an electronic one。
A paper dictionary has many advantages although it’s considered heavy to carry and time-consuming. First of all, the information listed in a paper dictionary is more sufficient and accurate。
The usage of a certain word is often explained in detail with several examples or even vivid pictures so that the user may have a better command of the word。
On the contrary, most e— dictionaries fail to tell the users how to use a word correctly and properly。
Secondly, a paper dictionary can be used for a long time once it’s bought, for it doesn't depend on electricity to work. There are few things that are more annoying than finding that the batteries have run out when you reach for a dictionary. Last but not least, there can be a lot of mistakes in an e- dictionary while a paper one has been revised several times before its eventual publication. E-dictionaries also tend to use abbreviations a lot, which may cause those who have just started to learn the foreign language much confusion. To sum up, I prefer using a paper dictionary to using a fashionable, electronic one. 2Using electronic dictionaries has been a growing trend among students。
