It was named after Mt. Xiling. Ther e ar e 3 cities along Xiling Gorge, which ar e Badong, Zigui and Yic hang. The Thr ee Gorges Dam comes right in front of Xiling Gorge.FeaturesXiling Gor ge is the last of the Thr ee Gor ges as one sails down from this str etch of the Yangtze, and it mar ks the end of the narrow, twisting and turning c orridor that has been so tr eac herous in the past. Thanks to the Gezhou Dam Water Conservancy Proj ect, the water now has been c almed to some extent. In spite of the risks (Xiling Gor ge was dubbed as a "death passage"). Ships wer e compelled to pass thr ough its waters r egularly, as there was little alternative. It was also for this r eason, among many other s, that the Thr ee Gor ges Dam pr oj ect was justified. It has turned what was onc e a "dealth passage", wher e many ships went aground, and some even completely destroyed, into a gent waterway whose surfac e today mor e f ittingly be compar ed to the plac id waters of a lake.Beyond the Xiling Gor ge, the Yangtze broadens out into a flat, gentle waterway that is easy to navigate. Along Xiling Gor ge sit many historic al sites, including the Huangling Temple whic h was fir st built during the Thr ee Kingdoms Period over 1,800 year s ago, Quyuan Anc estr al Hall, an old temple to honor the memory of Quyuan, a gr eat patriotic poet in ancient time, and the for mer r esidenc e of Wangzhaojun.Profile of the Three-Gorges Tribe Scenic SpotThe Three-Gorges Tribe Scenic Spot consists of the Village on the Water, the Brook-Side Village, the Mountain Village. The area has been officially designated as a “Prot ect ed Center of the Popular Culture and Art of the Three G orges.”The Three-Gorges Tribe is locat ed on Xiling Gorge in the city of Yichang, between the Three-Gorges Dam and the Gezhouba Dam, in a region of mountains and streams where the scenery has the beauty of landscape paintings. Young women dance and sing as old sailboats moor placidly below stilt houses hidden in the bamboo grove. Maidens wash clothes by the brook side with their whirling batons, fishermen cast their nets in the mist y distance… Ent ering the region feels like coming from afar into a dreamland garden.Three Gorges-Dengying Gorge (the Shadowgraph Gorge12 km west to Nanjin Guan, there is the Dengying Gorge (the Shadowgraph Gorge), which is also called “Mingyue Gorge (the BrightMoon Gorge)”. It’s a short but extraordinary gorge. The walls of t he gorge are smooth and clean, just like having been polished carefully by Nature’s engineering. Being mirrored by the sky, the walls look like a lifelike traditional Chinese landscape painting. If you get here at night, the landscape in the moon light will show you a dreamland beyond words description. That’s the origin of another name, “the Bright Moon Gorge”. The Dengying Gorge, which means “the Shadowgraph Gorge”, got its name from the figure of the mountains. In the south bank, four peculiar stones loo k like four characters in the famous Chinese legend “Record of a journey to the west”. In sunset, when we look at them from the gorge, they are vivid like telling the story by the shadowgraph. So, the gorge here is also called “the Shadowgraph Gorge”.Lantern Shadow Gorge (Dengying Xia ) is located ten kilometers (six mile) west of Nanjin Pass in Yichang City of Hubei Province. It is straight and narrow although not very long. Passing through it, you may believe that you are entering your own gate to parad ise.The limestone on the mountains standing on two sides of the gorge has specially developed to form a masterpiece of nature. Steep cliffs and towering peaks extend continuously on the banks. Plenty of trees, stones in various shapes and cliffside springs scatter here and there on the mountains. The gorge features some unusual sights on the south side. On the peak of Baiya Mountain located on the southern bank of the Yangtze, stand four strange rocks. The four rocks are just in the shapes of the four well-known figures - Monk Xuanzang (San Zang) and his three disciples, Monkey King (Sun Wukong), Pig Zhu Bajie and Friar Sand (Sha Wujing) - in Journey to the West. Maybe you know something of Journey to the West? It is one of the four Chinese classical works, describing an interesting story. Xuanzang, a respectful monk in the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), went on a pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures to India with his three disciples. During the long journey, they defeated many sprites and monsters and overcome many difficulties. They were highly praised by Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty when they came back to Chang'an (the then capital which is known as Xian today) All the four of them are favored by Chinese people very much. The four rocks in the Lantern Shadow Gorge just vividly show the figures of them which are familiar to every Chinese - the decent Monk Xuanzang, the smart Monkey King, the clumsy Pig Zhu Bajie and the surefooted Friar Sand.Cruising on the Yangtze River, you will have a chance to admire these four lifelike stones when passing this section. If passing it at the sunset, the four are just like characters in the Dengying Play (Shadow Puppet Show). They appear dark shadows in the dusk just like the shadows of leather-made puppets being projected on to a screen. Hence the nam e, Dengying Gorge.t has another name - Mingyue Xia (Bright Moon Gorge). The cliff is regarded as a masterpiece by nature with a smooth surface in solid color. When you pass through the gorge on a clear night, you will marvel at the wonderful scene - bright moonlight casts upon the glazed cliff and the elegant ridge is clearly reflected in the waterTen kilometers (six mile) to the east of Lantern Shadow Gorge is the Nanjin Pass, the eastend of Xiling Gorge and also the Yangtze Three Gorges. Additionally, not far west of Lantern Shadow Gorge you can visit the Immortal Bridge, which is the best place to view the enchanting scenery of Xiling Gorge。
