How long dose the Spring Festival last?
• About 15 days • The Spring Festival begins at the first day of lunar Junuary and lasts until the Lantern Festival.
“Dust” is homophonic with “chen”(陈) in Chinese, which means old and past. In this way, “sweeping the dust ”before Spring Festival means a thorough cleaning of houses to sweep away bad luck in the past year. This costom shows a good wish of putting away old things to welcome a new life.
• When do we begin to sweep the dust for the Spring Festival? • It begins at lunar December 23rd until the Eve of Spring festival. • Why do we do a thorough clean of our house for the Spring festival?
The origin of the Lunar New Year Festival can be traced back thousands of years, involving a series of colorful legends and traditions. One of the most famous legends is Nian, an extremely cruel and ferocious[fə‘rəʊʃəs] beast that the ancients believed would devour people on New Year’s Eve. To keep Nian away, red-paper couplets( 对 联 ) are pasted on doors, torches are lit, and firecrackers are set off throughout the night, because Nian is said to fear the color red, the light of fire, and loud noises.
