In the days of Napoleon the same wind which would have carried his transports across the Channel might have driven away the blockading (封锁) fleet. There was always the chance, and it is that chance which has excited and befooled (愚弄) the imaginations of many continental tyrants. Many are the tales that are told. We are assured that novel methods will be adopted, and when we see the originality of malice (怨恨), the ingenuity of aggression, which our enemy displays, we may certainly prepare ourselves for every kind of novel stratagem (战略) and every kind of brutal and treacherous (奸诈)maneuver (花招). I think that no idea is so outlandish (乖僻的) that itshould not be considered and viewed with a searching, but at the same time, I hope, with a steady eye.We must never forget the solid assurances of sea power and those which belong to air power if it can be locally exercised. I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace (威胁) of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. Thisis the resolve of His Majesty's government - every man of them. This is the will of parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good rades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous states have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious (可憎的) apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag (变弱) or fail.We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, weshall defend our island, whatever the cost might be, weshall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated (征服) and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the new world, with its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.16 Throughout Britain's history, there has been no guarantee that an invasion would not happen.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 Napoleon and his army once crossed the English Channel and conquered BritainA RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 The enemy will use every means conceivable to destroy Britain.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Churchill is confident that he will live longer than Hitler.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 The Royal Air Force will launch massive air strikes against the Germans.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 The British empire is so strong that it does not have to take Hitler's menace seriouslyA RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Although many countries have been overrun by the Germans, the British people will never give in.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned1 When Tracy McGrady is healthy, his play can be so beautiful that even his own teammates on the court cannot help but admire it - in the middle of a game2 "It's hard for me, because I'm a fan of basketball," Houston point guard (负责组织进攻的后卫) Rafer Alston told The Houston Chronicle (记事) newspaper after McGrady's 44-point performance against Utah on January 5. "When he's shooting the ball like that, a lot of times I'm standing there watching and, all of a sudden, the other team's getting the ball and going on a fast break (快攻), and I'm getting yelled at by the coach." Indeed, McGrady's body control, his energy, his shooting - watching these is like watching an artist at work, blending colors, constructing sentences, or playing music.3 Unfortunately, McGrady, 27, hasn't always been on the job. Already this season, he's missed seven games with back spasms (痉挛) After Yao Ming was injured on Dec. 23, it appeared Houston would be without both of its stars. McGrady, however, returned three days later and has beenplaying well ever since, scoring more than 30 points in each of the last six games, as of Tuesday. Houston can't seem to get on without him. When McGrady was injured, the Rockets won two and lost five4 "Listen, there are only four or five people on the entire pla that can do the things he can do with the basketball," forward Shane Battier said of McGrady. "From a fan's perspective - and we're fans even though we're players - it's really fun to watch him do that. From a player's perspective, his game (风格) can affect the entire team. No question We see him, and we get excited, and that pumps us up. He keeps making shots, and suddenly it seems to bee easier for everybody."5 But it won't, really. Houston has just begun a tough time. Four of the next seven games will be played away from Houston. Six of the games will be against teams with winning records. Opponents will double-team (双人看守) McGrady in an attempt to dull the impact of his art. Instead of watching, McGrady's teammates will need to create a little art of their own.23 Paragraph 2 .24 Paragraph 3 .25 Paragraph 4 .26 Paragraph 5 .A Necessity for the Teammates to Improve Their Own SkillsB Evaluation from Two Different PerspectivesC Spectacular Performance on the CourtD Players Houston Can't Do WithoutE Yao Ming's PerformanceF McGrady's Injury27 McGrady plays basketball so we28 Yao Ming missed several games29 There are very few people on the Earth30 Everyone will have to contributeA that his teammates cannot help admiring himB that he is often yelled at by the coachC who can play basketball so wellD because he had been injuredE if Houston hopes to winF since he returned。

Most physicians have a contract relationship with one or more hospitals in their community. They refer their patients as needed to the hospital, which usually charges according to the number of days a patient stays and the facilities--X-rays, operating rooms, tests -he or she uses. Some medical doctors are on salary. Salaried physicians may work as hospital staff members, or residents, who are often still in training. They may teach in medical schools, be hired by corporations to care for their workers or work for the federal government's Public Health Service.Physicians are among the best-paid professionals in the United States. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon for medical doctors to, earn incomes of more than $100,000 a year. Specialists, particularly surgeons, might earn several times that amount. Physicians list many reasons why they deserve to be so well rewarded for their work. One reason is the long and expensive preparation required to become a physician in the United States. Most would-be physicians first attend college for four years, which can cost nearly $20,000 a year at one of the best private institutions. Prospective physicians then attend medical school for four years. Tuition alone can exceed $10,000 a year. By the time they have obtained their medical degrees, many young physicians are deeply in debt. They still face three to five years of residency (住院医生实习期) in a hospital, the first year as an apprentice physician. The hours are long and the pay is relatively low.Setting up a medical practice is expensive, too. Sometimes several physicians will decide to establish a group practice, so they can share the expense of maintaining an office and buying equipment. These physicians also take care of each other's patients in emergencies.Physicians work long hours and must accept a great deal of responsibility. Many medical procedures, even quite routine ones, involve risk. It is understandable that physicians want to be well rewarded for making decisions which can mean the difference between life and death.16 Many physicians in the US are self-employed private physiciansA RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 No salaried physicians teach in medical schools in the US.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Of all employed physicians, those hired by corporations are best paid.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Becoming a physician in the US costs considerable time and money.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Physicians in the US are poorly rewarded for their work.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Anyone with a medical degree can set up a medical practice in the US.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 There are more men physicians than women physicians in the US.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned第3部分:概括大意与完成句子(第23~30题,每题1分,共8分)下面的短文后有2项测试任务:(1)第23~26题要求从所给的6个选项中为第2~5段每段1选择个最佳标题;(2)第27~30题要求从所给的6个选项中为每个句子确定1个最佳选项。

Image Martian Dust Particles NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander has taken its first-ever picture of a single particle of rusty Martian dust with one of its microscopes. The dust particles of dust were shown at a higher magnification than anything outside of Earth that has been imaged before. The rounded particle measured only about one micrometer, or one millionth of a meter, across.“Taking this image required the highest resolution microscope operated off Earth and a specially designed device to hold the Martian dust,” said Tom Pike, a Phoenix science team member from Imperial College London. “We always knew it was going to be techni cally very challenging to image particles this small.”The device that imaged the dust speck is called an atomic force microscope, which maps the shape of particles in three dimensions by scanning them with a sharp tip at the end of a spring. The atomic force microscope can detail the shapes of particles as small as about 100 nanometers. And this won’t be the last dust particle that Phoenix will image. “After this first success, we're now working on building up a portrait gallery of the dust on Mars,” Pike said.Dust exists everywhere on Mars, coating the surface and giving it its rusty red color. Dust particles also color the Martian sky pink and feed storms that regularly envelope the planet. The ultra-fine dust is the medium that actively links gases in the Martian atmosphere to processes in Martian soil, so it is critically important to understanding Mars’ environment, the researchers said. The $420-million Phoenix mission is analyzing the dust and subsurface ice layers of Mars’ arctic regions to look for signsof potential past habitability. The particle seen in the atomic force microscope image was part of a sample scooped by the robotic arm from the "Snow White" trench and delivered to Phoenix’s microscope station in early July.16.
