The warm weather means school is out and I get to play outside all day. But summer also brings one of the most fun and exciting festivals - the Dragon Boat Festival!The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional holiday celebrated in many Asian countries like China, Taiwan, Singapore and more. It usually happens in late May or early June, when the weather starts getting really hot and humid. The festival originated a long, long time ago as a way to commemorate the life and death of an famous Chinese patriotic poet named Qu Yuan.There are many different traditions and activities during this festival that make it super exciting. One of the most iconic is the dragon boat races! These are boat races with teams rowing thesereally long boats that have a carved dragon head at the front. The boats are so cool and colorful with bright paintwork. During the races, the rowers have to paddle together perfectly in sync to the rhythmic beating of a drum. It's like a dance on the water!Watching the dragon boat races is always a highlight. Hundreds of teams compete, cheered on by huge crowds of spectators lining the rivers and lakes. The races are filled with energy, chanting and the rhythmic drumbeats. Everyone goes wild when their team sprints across the finish line first. After the main races, there are other fun side competitions like dragon boat dancing and champion rowers showing off daring stunts while standing on the rocking boats. I've even seen rowers doing handstands or dancing on the narrow boats!Another big tradition is making and eating zongzi, which are these delicious sticky rice dumplings wrapped up in bamboo or reed leaves. A long, long time ago in ancient China, there was a great poet and minister named Qu Yuan. He was very patriotic and loved his country deeply. However, the king at that time didn't listen to Qu Yuan's honest advice and sent him away from the capital city.Poor Qu Yuan felt so sad and upset that he walked to a river and drowned himself. When the local people heard what had happened, they raced out in their boats to try and save him. They beat drums and threw rice dumplings into the river so that the fish wouldn't eat Qu Yuan's body. Even though they couldn't save him, the people were so touched by his loyalty that they paid respects to him every year on that day.That's how the Dragon Boat Festival tradition began! Qu Yuan The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.
屈原龙舟节，也被称作端午节，庆祝于中国农历5月初5。

The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. This regatta commemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.

Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during the Warring States Period (475-221BC). He was upright, loyal and highly esteemed for his wise counsel that brought peace and prosperity to the state. However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified Qu, he was disgraced and dismissed from office. Realizing that the country was now in the hands of evil and corrupt officials, Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save him but were unable to even recover his body. Thereafter, the state declined and was eventually conquered by the State of Qin.

Zongzi The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth month. But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and told the mourners that a huge reptile in the river had stolen the rice. The spirit then advised them to wrap the rice in silk and bind it with five different-colored threads before tossing it into the river.
粽子为了纪念屈原，楚国人纷纷在5月初5这天将米饭团扔进江里，借此来慰藉屈原的灵魂。

During the Duanwu Festival, a glutinous rice pudding called zong zi is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu. Ingredients such as beans, lotus seeds, chestnuts, pork fat and the golden yolk of a salted duck egg are often added to the glutinous rice. The pudding is then wrapped with bamboo leaves, bound with a kind of raffia and boiled in salt water for hours.

The dragon-boat races The dragon-boat races symbolize the many attempts to rescue and recover Qu's body. A typical dragon boat ranges from 50-100 feet in length, with a beam of about feet, accommodating two paddlers seated side by side.

A wooden dragon head is attached at the bow, and a dragon tail at the stern.
A banner hoisted on a pole is also fastened at the stern and the hull is decorated with red, green and blue scales edged in gold. In the center of the boat is a canopied shrine behind which the drummers, gong beaters and cymbal players are seated to set the pace for the paddlers. There are also men positioned at the bow to set off firecrackers, toss rice into the water and pretend to be looking for Qu. All of the noise and pageantry creates an atmosphere of gaiety and excitement for the participants and spectators alike. The races are held among different clans, villages and organizations, and the winners are awarded medals, banners, jugs of wine and festive meals.
