Why did Nicolle drop out of school completely?Mini-talk twoToday, I’m going to tell you something about the history of the Statue of Liberty, one of the most famous statues in America. To many people the statue is known as Lady Liberty. She stands on a small island in New York Harbor near the great city. In her right hand she holds a torch with a golden flame high above her head. Her left arm hold a tablet with the date July 4th, 1776. That is the date the United States declared its independence. On her head is a crown of 7 points that represents the 7 continents and the 7 seas. Around her feet is a broken chain that7represents oppression. The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States from the people of France. Its official name was Liberty enlightening the World. Frédéric Bartholdi built the statue in several parts. These were shipped to New York and then put together on a base. The statue was dedicated in a ceremony on October 28, 1886. The statue itself stands about 46 meters tall. The distance from the ground to the top of the golden torch is about 23 meters. The statue can be seen from far away. For the many millions of immigrants who came to America on ships the Statue of Liberty was the first thing they saw. This year’s observance centers on the relationship between mental health and chronic physical conditions, like diabetes and cancer. The World Health Organization says more than 450 million people suffer from poor mental health. The most common disorders are depression and psychosis. Mental health experts also include other disorders like drug and alcohol abuse that affect millions of people. …is with the world Federation for mental health. That organization, based in the United States, held the first world mental health day in 1992. Mrs. Burger says that mental health problems are9most severe in poor countries that lack the resources to deal with them. She says in a report: “it’s an enormous issue.”The WHO is highlighting mental health as a neglected issue. In developing countries a huge number of people, up to 85%, don’t have access to any form of mental health treatment. There are huge staffing needs. There are no services. Experts say about half of all mental health problems first appear before the age of 15. The countries with the highest percentages of young people are in the developing world. That means they are also the countries with the poorest levels of mental health resources. The WHO says that many low and middle income countries have only one child psychiatrist for every 1-4 million people. Worldwide, depression is the leading mental health problem and a leading cause of disability. In 2009, WHO estimated that more than 154 million people suffered from depression. But …from the mental health federation says other kinds of diseases often get more attention. She says people are more10focused on communicable diseases and not paying enough attention to the amount of disability there is from mental health conditions and these are the real disabilities where people are not able to work to their full capacity, c an’t earn an income. And there is a big impact on families as well. Mrs. Burger says her organization and the WHO are pushing to have governments include mental health care in their development goals. She says this could greatly improve the ability of treatment and services worldwide.11。

All but one were established hundreds of years ago, when England had colonies in the area. The oldest schools are Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania. The newest is Cornell, which was founded in eighteen sixty-five.The term Ivy League can also be used to describe a sports grouping of the eight schools. The schools are alsocalled the Ivies. Many language experts believe that the term first appeared in the media. In the nineteen-thirties, a sports reporter called the schools in the grouping, the "Ivy League." The group also had an unofficial name -- "The Ancient Eight." Now both names are used. However, the National Collegiate Athletic Association officially uses the term Ivy League. Why the reporter used the term is not completely clear. Some people say the term is linked to the ivy plant. And ivy does cover some of the grounds and buildings at the schools. Other people say the term dates back to when only four of the schools were part of the sports group. The number four was written in roman numerals, the letters "I" and "V." However, most historians say that explanation is incorrect. The term Ivy League is sometimes said in a disapproving way. Some people think the eight schools and their students value themselves too highly. Admission to the schools is very competitive. As little as seven percent of students who seek admission are accepted. The educational offerings of Ivy League schools are considered among the best and most demanding in the world. All eight schools are also private and extremely costly. A four year degree from Harvard, for example, can cost more than two hundred thousand dollars. Admission to an Ivy League school can sometimes be easier among people who are rich, powerful or are related to former students of the school.Q10.Which school in the Ivy League was not founded hundreds of years ago?Q11. What can we learn about the real origin of the term Ivy League?Q12.What is the overall acceptance for Ivy League schools?Mini-talk TwoThe Kennedy Center presents music, dance, plays and other performances. The full name is the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The idea began with legislation signed by President Dwight Eisenhower in nineteen fifty-eight to create a National Cultural Center. The building opened in nineteen seventy-one as a memorial to John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the thirty-fifth president. He and his wife, Jacqueline, strongly supported the arts.Architect Edward Durrell Stone designed a simple white building that overlooks the Potomac River. The Kennedy Center has several performing areas. The Concert Hall is the largest. The National Symphony Orchestra performs there. So do popular entertainers. The Washington Opera, ballets and musical comedies are performed in the Opera House. Plays and some opera and dance productions take place in the Eisenhower Theater. Smaller theaters in the Kennedy Center present music groups and plays. The Family Theater presents performances for young people. Each year more than four hundred performances are offered free of charge by local, national and international artists.Over the years, some of the world's top artists have performed at the Kennedy Center. Many special events also take place there. These have included a month-long celebration of the traditional and modern arts of China. They have also included an exploration of the culture oftwenty-two Arab nations. The Kennedy Center also serves as an educational headquarters. It supports and teaches people about the performing arts in America. It creates programs for teachers and students of all ages. It supports competitions and training programs for students. And it pays young performing artists to create new works.13.Who signed the legislation to create a national cultural center?14.which area is the largest performance space in the Kennedy center?15.what does the Kennedy center teach people about?Section C:Until 1973, most telephone calls were made either at home, at a business or in a vehicle. But on April 3rd of that year, Martin Cooper of the Motorola Company made history. While walking down the street in New York City, he made the first mobile telephone call.Mr. Cooper had helped invent the DynaTAC 8000X. It was a mobile telephone often called "the brick." It wasmuch larger and heavier than the mobile phones we use today. After that first call, it took ten years before the phone was ready to be sold to the public. The first ones were very expensive. They cost almost 4,000 dollars each. But even with that size and cost, many people stood in line to buy them. The first mobile telephones used a system, or network, called 1G. It was the "first generation" of technology. This allowed one person to call and talk to another person, but that was all. By the early 1990s, the second generation, or 2G network, came into use. It allowed talking and sending text messages. By that time, cell phones were much smaller and cost much less.In 2001, the first 3G systems were being used. This new network permitted people using cell phones to make calls, send text messages and use the Internet. Userscould even keep photographs and music on their phones, and send them to their friends.Within the past two years, the 4G network has come into use. It permits cell phones to work much faster and with much more information. Modern cell phones can even act as small televisions. They can show movies and live sporting events. As the networks have gotten more complex, the telephones have gotten smaller, lighter and less costly. Many electronics stores in the United States even give away the newest cell phones. But customers must agree to pay to use the network that sends their calls from one place to another. It is interesting to imagine what the 5G and 6G network cell phones of the future will be able to do.。

2024年北京学位英语考试真题答案
2024年北京学位英语考试真题答案全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇12024 Beijing English Proficiency Test AnswersHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grader at Sunshine Elementary School in Beijing. I just took the big English test last week and I wanted to share my answers with you. My mom says I'm not supposed to share test answers, but she also says honesty is the best policy. So I'm being honest by telling you these are my answers! I'm a pretty good English student, so maybe they will help you out.The first section was listening comprehension. There was a dialog between two kids arguing about what game to play at recess. I said the boy wanted to play basketball and the girl wanted to play jump rope. Then there was a story about a puppy who got lost and had to find his way home. I said the puppy's name was Buddy and he ended up at a firehouse before his owners came to get him.Next was the reading section. The first passage was about the Great Wall of China. I wrote that it was built a really long timeago to protect China from invaders. It's super long and winds across deserts and mountains. The second passage discussed different kinds of fruits. I wrote that apples and oranges are popular fruits that grow on trees. Bananas technically aren't trees, they're plants. And strawberries and blueberries are smaller fruits that grow on bushes close to the ground. On to the writing section! The first prompt asked me to describe my favorite day of the year. I wrote about Chinese New Year because that's when I get lots of yummy food and red envelopes with money. I described the fun traditions like hanging up red lanterns, watching the dragon dance, and setting off firecrackers. For the second prompt, I had to give directions from my house to the nearest park. I wrote about leaving my apartment building, turning right, going straight for three blocks, turning left at the bakery that always smells so good, and then the park is on the next block with the big playground.Whew, that was a lot of writing! The grammar section wasn't too bad. There were some fill-in-the-blank sentences testing different verb tenses. Like "Jerry _____ his dog for a walk every morning" and I put "takes." Or "Last night I _____ a yummy dinner" and I put "ate." There were also some questionsidentifying parts of speech. I had to say if a word was being used as a noun, verb, adjective, etc. Finally, the vocabulary part asked me to identify definitions or synonyms for words. I remember one asking what "diligent" means and I said it's someone who works really hard and doesn't goof off. Another asked for a synonym for "enormous" and I put "huge."So there you have it, my complete answers to the big English test! Hopefully it's useful for you guys to study. If not, no biggie. I'm just an elementary kid doing my best. Let me know if you have any other questions!篇22024 Beijing English Test - A Kid's PerspectiveWow, what a day! I just took the big Beijing English test for 2024 and my brain is spinning. I've been studying so hard for months, drilling vocab words with my mom and doing practice tests every week. I really wanted to do well because getting a good score can help me get into a great middle school. The reading section was pretty tough. There were passages about things like the history of the Great Wall and traditionalChinese medicine. Some of the vocabulary was super advanced for a 6th grader like me. I had to really focus and use all my skills like looking for context clues and breaking down words into roots. For the questions about the main ideas, I tried to sum up each paragraph in my head first before choosing an answer. The listening part was no joke either! The recordings went pretty fast with different accents - American, British, Australian. I topped off my horse-shaped pencil and wrote down key details as they spoke. Listening for numbers, Names, places and transition words helped a ton. Those conversation dialogues between two speakers were the hardest to follow. By the end my page looked like a crazy web of notes! After lunch, we had to write two essays - one was an opinion piece and the other was a story. For the opinion essay about whether kids should get allowances, I planned it out with a graphic organizer first. I made sure to have a clear thesis statement, three body paragraphs with examples, and a solid conclusion summing it all up. The story was a fun one - I wrote a narrative about the day an alien landed in my backyard! I tried to add lots of descriptive details and some dialogue to make it more interesting. The very last section was speaking, which made me super nervous. We had to record ourselves on computers responding to prompts and questions. I spoke slowly and enunciated clearly, using some vocabulary words I had practiced. For the impromtu questions, I took a breath to organize my thoughts before responding. I just tried to relax and imagine I was talking to a friend.Phew, I'm exhausted after that marathon test! I gave it my best effort though. No matter what my score ends up being, I'm proud of myself for working so hard to improve my English skills this year. Studying a language is no easy task, but becoming bilingual has lots of amazing benefits. Who knows, maybe I'll grow up to be an English teacher myself someday! I'll just have to wait patiently for those results to come out...篇32024 Beijing Graduate English Exam Answers!Hey guys! It's me again, your favorite elementary school kid who loves talking about big fancy tests. This year I got my hands on the answers for the 2024 Beijing Graduate English Exam. How cool is that?!The reading section was pretty wild. There was this long passage about the history of cheese making. Apparently, a long long time ago, this nomad guy's horse kick over a bag of milk and it curdled in the hot sun. The nomad tried it and was like "Hmmm not bad!" and that's how cheese was invented! Crazy right? The main point was that a lot of important discoveries happen by accident. Then there were some other readings about environmental science topics. One was how cutting down forests is bad for the environment because trees absorb carbon dioxide. Another one talked about how plastic pollution in the oceans is really dangerous for fish, birds, and other marine life. I feel bad for all those animals getting stuck in plastic can holders and balloons. We really need to recycle more and use less plastic!Okay, let's move on to the writing section prompts. One of them asked you to describe your favorite piece of artwork and why it's meaningful to you. I would have written about this finger painting I made in kindergarten of a sunflower. I gave it to my mom for Mother's Day and she cried happy tears and put it on the fridge. It's still there to this day!Another writing prompt was to discuss two ways that climate change is impacting your local community and what could bedone about it. For where I live, I'd probably say it's making the summers hotter and causing more extreme weather like blizzards in winter. To help, we could plant more trees, use less electricity, and get solar panels on our roof.As for the listening section, some of it was just conversations between people making plans and giving directions and stuff. But then there were also lectures from professors talking about biology, history, environmental science, you name it! The environmental one was about different types of renewable energy like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power. We learned about those in school too when we watched the fun video about the rapping renewable energy kids. "We're the renewable gang, and we're here to say, renewable energy is the way to save the day!"The speaking tasks covered all sorts of topics too. One was to describe your favorite holiday tradition and why it's meaningful. For me, I'd talk about how every Christmas morning my family goes on a walk around the neighborhood to look at all the Christmas light displays before opening presents.Another speaking prompt asked you to explain a process like How To Bake Bread or How Composting Works step-by-step. I could definitely do that for How To Make Slime since I'mbasically a slime expert after making fifty billion versions of it. Mix the glue, borax, water, food coloring, maybe add some glitter and pom poms too. Easy peasy slime squeezy!Phew, that's a lot of test content to recap! Let's be real, these English tests can be kind of a snoozefest. But thinking back now, there were actually some interesting topics about science, history, and world cultures mixed in there. And hey, anything that doesn't involve solving crazy math problems is a win in my book!If you studied hard and knew all your vocab words, idioms, and grammar rules, hopefully you rocked this test. Maybe I'll even see some of you walking across that graduation stage in your cap and gown one day. Just don't trip! That would be so embarrassing in front of everyone. Speaking of embarrassing stories...篇42024年北京学位英语考试真题答案Part 1: Listening Comprehension (听力理解)Who is Peter's favorite singer?Answer: Peter's favorite singer is Taylor Swift. What did Sarah do last weekend?Answer: Last weekend, Sarah went to the park with her family. How many people are there in Jack's family?Answer: There are four people in Jack's family. What color is Lisa's new bike?Answer: Lisa's new bike is purple.Where is the school library?Answer: The school library is on the second floor.Part 2: Reading Comprehension (阅读理解)Passage 1What is the story about?Answer: The story is about a cat named Whiskers. Why did Whiskers get lost?Answer: Whiskers got lost because he wandered too far from home. How did the little girl find Whiskers?Answer: The little girl found Whiskers in a tree.Where did Whiskers live before he got lost?Answer: Whiskers lived with a kind old lady before he got lost. How did the little girl help Whiskers?Answer: The little girl took Whiskers home and gave him food and water.Passage 2What is the article about?Answer: The article is about recycling. Why is recycling important?Answer: Recycling is important because it helps protect the environment. What can we recycle?Answer: We can recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal. How can we recycle at home?Answer: We can separate our trash into different bins for recycling. What happens to recycled materials?Answer: Recycled materials are made into new products.Part 3: Writing (写作)Title: My Dream VacationHello everyone! At the end, she made a huge strawberry shortcake to share with her family. I love strawberries too so I could really relate to Emma's story. Then there was an article about different sports that are popular around the world. It mentioned soccer, basketball, tennis, and a few others I'd never heard of before like curling and cricket. My favorite sport is definitely ping pong though! Have you ever played it before? The last reading passage talked about the life cycle of butterflies. It was really interesting learning about how they start as tiny eggs, then become caterpillars, then form chrysalises before finally emerging as beautiful butterflies. Nature is so amazing!Writing Section:For the writing part, I had to write a short story about my most exciting day ever. Here's what I wrote:"My Most Exciting DayOne sunny Saturday, I woke up extra early because my parents had a huge surprise for me - we were going to the brand new water park that just opened up! I could barely contain my excitement as we drove there. When we arrived, my jaw dropped. There were massive swirling water slides taller than skyscrapers, huge pools with artificial waves you could surf on, and mistsquirting fountains everywhere. I didn't know where to start! After slathering on tons of sunscreen, I first raced to the biggest waterslide. I carefully climbed up the infinite stairs, got into my rainbow tube, and whooshed down at lightning speed. The twists and turns made my stomach flip as I shrieked with delight.Next, my parents and I moved to the wave pool. We had a blast bobbing up and down and diving through the massive artificial waves. I even bravely attempted to boogie board a few times! The day seemed to fly by in a whirlwind of splashes, laughter, and nonstop fun. By the time the park closed, my skin was all pruney but I had the biggest smile ever. I can't wait to go back again soon!"I really hope I did a good job capturing all the fun and excitement of my awesome waterpark adventure! Writing stories is one of my favorite things to do.Listening Section:The listening part was pretty tricky. There were conversations about making plans to go to the movies, ordering food at a restaurant, and giving directions. I had to listen very carefully and take notes on the important details. Then there was a longer segment about a brother and sister who were putting on a magic show for their parents. The sister kept making fun of her brother for messing up all the tricks! Even though it was kind of mean, it was also pretty funny. At the end, there was an excerpt from an audiobook about koalas and their habitats. I learned that koalas are only found naturally in certain forests in Australia. They are so cute and fuzzy!Speaking Section:For the speaking part, the test assistant asked me all sorts of different questions. They wanted me to describe my family, talk about my favorite subject in school, and explain the rules of a game I like to play. I gave examples and tried to use lots of vocabulary words. Then the assistant told me to look at a few pictures and put them in a logical sequence to tell a story. The pictures showed a boy planting seeds, pulling weeds, watering the sprouts, andfinally harvesting ripe veggies. I looove gardening so that part was easy for me!At the very end, the assistant gave me a random topic and I had to give a short speech about it. My topic was "If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?"Here's what I said: "If I could have any superpower, I would want the ability to fly. Being able to soar through the clouds would be the most freeing and amazing feeling ever! I could jet off on adventures to explore every corner of the world. I would get to experience incredible bird's eye views that hardly anyone gets to witness. Just imagine the thrill of gliding effortlessly above cities, oceans, forests, and more. I could even fly up into outer space if I wanted! Having the power to fly would make me feel totally invincible and unstoppable. The sky would be the limit - actually scratch that, there would be no limits at all!"Phew, that was everything on the huge English test! Even though some parts were super tricky, I felt pretty good about most of my answers. I gave it my best effort and that's what counts. Fingers crossed I did well!Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for reading, and study hard for your English tests too!篇6The 2024 Beijing Academic English TestHi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm a 5th grader at Beijing Elementary School. This year, I had to take the big Academic English Test that all the older kids have to do. I was pretty nervous about it, but my teacher Ms. Wang helped get me ready. She said it was super important to do well on this test if I wanted to get into a good middle school. No pressure, right?!The test had four sections - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I'll tell you all about each part and what the questions were like. Maybe it will help you when it's your turn to take it!ListeningThis part was kind of fun! We got some headphones and had to listen to recordings of people talking in English. The voices were pretty clear, which was nice. There were conversations between two people that we had to answer questions about. Like what were they talking about? Or how did one person feel about something the other person said? Paying really close attention to all the details was key.We also had to listen to lectures and take notes on the important points. The lectures were about science topics like photosynthesis or the water cycle. I studied up on my science words in English before the test, which really paid off! Then there were some recordings that just gave instructions, like directions to get somewhere. We had to listen carefully and maybe draw a map or put the steps in order. The listening questions were multiple choice, which I liked. As long as I clearly understood the main points of each conversation or lecture, I could usually identify the right answer.ReadingOkay, I'll be honest - the reading section stressed me out a little. We had to read fairly long passages of different types, like stories, articles, and infographics. The passages were on all kinds of subjects too - biology, history, literature. Whew! After reading each passage, we had to answer questions testing our comprehension. The questions got pretty detailed, like analyzing the author's perspective or defining tricky vocabulary words based on context clues. For the literature passages, we might have to identify themes or make inferences about a character's motivations andfeelings. For the infographics and articles, we needed to be able to interpret data from graphs, charts and visuals. Two key things helped me a ton with the reading - first, doing practice readings at home and learning strategies like skimming for gist and scanning for details. Second, studying prefixes, root words, and other vocabulary building blocks in English. That made it easier to decode and figure out the harder words.WritingI actually felt pretty confident about the writing section because we practiced a lot of sample prompts in class. For the test, we had two writing tasks. The first one was just a short response to a question, like "What activities do you most enjoy and why?" For that, we just had to write a paragraph or two with clear examples and details to support our main idea. The longer task was an entire essay, probably around300-400 words. We got a couple of prompts to choose from, like "Who has inspired you the most and how have they impacted your life?" or "What discovery or innovation has been most important and why?"For the essay, we had to develop a clear thesis or main argument, provide specific reasons and examples, and have an organized structure with an intro, body, and conclusion. Using transition words, varying our sentences, and trying to write with accuracy and few errors was important too.My teacher's advice was to first plan out our key points and examples. Then get that framework down for the intro and each body paragraph. After that, we could go back and add more details, explanations and concluding thoughts. Having a solid plan made the writing part much less intimidating!SpeakingPhew, we made it to the last section! The speaking part involved recording ourselves responding to questions and prompts. For some questions, we just had to speak for 45-60 seconds about a basic topic like our daily routines, favorite books or sports, future hopes and dreams - that kind of thing. We could prepare a bit beforehand and then just record our response. There were also some role-play tasks where we had to pretend to be in a certain situation - like calling a restaurant to make a reservation, or discussing weekend plans with a friend. We'd get brief details about the scenario and then have to have a natural back-and-forth conversation following that situation. The hardest speaking prompts were when we had to give a longer speech about an opinion topic, like "What qualities make someone a good leader?" We only had a minute to gather our thoughts, and then had to speak for 1-2 minutes developing our perspective with clear reasons and examples. My teacher stressed staying focused, using transition words to connect our ideas, and trying to accurately and clearly explain our thoughts. Speaking slowly and clearly, without too many pause words like "umm" and "like" was important too. It took some practice, but I got more comfortable giving longer responses by the time the test came around.Whew, that's the full scoop on my experience with the big Beijing Academic English Test! It definitely challenged me in new ways across all the different sections. But doing lots of practice materials, learning strategies from my teacher, and just staying focused and confident helped a ton.I just got my results back and was relieved to see that I did pretty well overall! My listening and speaking scores were highest, and I passed the other sections too. With these scores, Ishould hopefully get into the great middle school program I was hoping for. Wish me luck!To any other students getting ready to take this test - study hard, but don't stress too much. Listen to your teachers, do your practice work, and just try your best. You've got this! Let me know if any of you have other questions about the test. I'm happy to share more tips!。

Both the talks and the questions will be read to you only once. After eachquestion, there will be a pause. During the pause, you must choose the best answerfrom the four choices given by marking the corresponding letter with a single baracross the square brackets on your machine-scoring Answer Sheet.Mini-talk OneThere is something hard to resist about cherries. The small red fruit is a popular seasonal food around the world.Cherries are thought to be native to western Asia. It is a member of the same family of plants as the rose. It is closely related to the plum. Like cherry trees, plum trees also flower in early spring. There are two major kinds of cherries harvested in the world: sweet and sour. Sour cherries are not eaten fresh because they contain little sugar. Instead, they are processed to make prepared foods like jellies and pies and to make alcoholic drinks. The United States is a major producer of sour cherries. Among the states, Michigan is the top producer.Sweet cherries contain much more sugar than their sour relatives and are usually eaten fresh. Washington state is the biggest American producer, followed by California and Oregon.Fresh cherries do not store well. They must reach market as soon as possible. So they cost more than many other kinds of fresh fruit.Cherry trees are also valued for their springtime blossoms.Cherry blossoms are popular in many parts of Asia and Europe, especially in Japan. But Washington, D.C., has some of the most famous cherry trees in the world. Japan gave the United States 3,500 cherry trees in nineteen twelve as a gift of friendship.Years later Japan gave another gift of three thousand eight hundred trees. In the early nineteen eighties, the United States provided Japan with cuttings to help replace Japanese trees lost in a flood.Question10: What plant family does the cherry belong to ?Question 11: Which state is the biggest sweet cherry producer in the US ?Question 12: How many cherry trees did Japan give the United States in 1912 ?Mini-talk TwoMany older Americans spend their final years in a nursing home or assisted living center. These places provide services that help older adults with activities they can no longer do on their own. However, most people say they would like to remain in their own homes. Now, there are nonprofit groups that help them do that. June Simms has more.Philip Smith is ninety-one years old and lives with his wife in an old house in Seattle, Washington. And he wants to keep it that way.He always says: "As far as I'm concerned, I would not like to leave this place. Living in a group situation is something I couldn't tolerate. I'd kill myself before I had to do that."Mr. Smith says now he and his wife can take good care of themselves in their two-level house. But he and his wife know they will soon need help with simple housework. Such as change a light bulb that hangs at the top of the stairs. In the past, an older American would ask one of their children or a neighborhood teenager to change the light bulb. But here, those young helpers have grown up and gone.Mr. and Mrs. Smith have three children but they all live in other sates. So they are considering joining a "virtual village." This is a local group of volunteers and service providers that help older adult. They might help these adults with anything from transportation to small home repairs and dog walking. The virtual village idea was first developed about ten years ago in Boston, Massachusetts. The idea has spread to an unofficial network of villages around the country. One hundred fifty are currently in development.Question 13: Why does Mr. Smith refuse to live in a nursing home?Question 14: Why can’t Mr. and Mrs. Smith ask their children to help them now?Question 15: According to the talk, what is the idea of a virtual village?Section C (1 point each)Directions: In this section you will hear a short lecture. Listen to the recording and complete the notes about the lecture. You will hear the recording twice. After the recording you areasked to write down your answers on the Answer Sheet. You now have 25 seconds toread the notes below.Today we will discuss the differences between public and private schools in American higher education.A big difference involves money. Public colleges and universities charge for an education just like private schools. But state schools cost less because they get money from the states that started them to educate local citizens. As a result, out-of-state and international students usually pay more than state residents, at least the first year. The state with the most residents, almost forty million, is California. Its systems of two-year and four-year colleges and universities are among the largest in the world. But the example we are going to focus on today is to the north of California, in a much smaller state on the West Coast: Oregon. The University of Oregon, located in Eugene, is one of the campuses in the Oregon University System. The cost for undergraduates this year is six thousand dollars for state residents. Housing isan additional eight thousand. Nonresidents pay the same for housing -- but almost twenty thousand dollars for tuition and fees.Let's see how these numbers compare to a private college in Oregon.Lewis and Clark College in Portland has four thousand students, compared to twenty thousand at the University of Oregon. Housing costs eight hundred dollars more than at the state school. But the big difference is tuition. The published price at Lewis and Clark is almost thirty-four thousand dollars.Yet Lewis and Clark is one of the few American colleges to offer financial aid for international students. Each year it awards financial aid to twenty students from other countries. And it says the average award last year was nineteen thousand dollars. That would make Lewis and Clark cheaper for international students than the University of Oregon. But, of course, prices alone do not say anything about the quality of a school or the value of an education. This is the end of Listening Comprehension.。
